I wanted to try modifying the SystemUI.apk file. Unfortunately it didn't work, navbar and statusbar disappeared, so I restored the backup file I made. Well, that didn't work either, with navbar and statusbar gone. Maybe it has something to do with me copying the backupfile instead of moving it, modifying the metadata (file creation date etc) somehow, I don't know.
Some guide recommended using root explorer to set all permissions. Done, and now I have no UI whatsoever. When booting, I get the "SystemUI has stopped" message. Blank screen, only the power menu pops up when I hold the power button.
Is it possible to restore the SystemUI from somewhere? I have the 12.75 firmware, because it seems newer ones aren't compatible with Xposed. That firmware isn't available for download, but I wouldn't want to lose my apps' data anyway in a factory reset.

Hi guys!
I'm running Doc_Kalpik's V7.5 and I had a bad run in while trying to manually install MiniSquadron which I paid for yet have been getting download unsuccessful errors no matter what I do! But that's another story...
After I installed it, I got a force close...then I got force closes everywhere else so I decided to reboot. And I discover that once I get to the boot animation portion, I get several vibrations (the same as the force close vibration pattern) at this point and eventually the screen turns black while still doing the vibration thing..I press the home button and the backlight keys just light up nothing else. So I go into recovery to attempt to fix.
I decided to reflash the ROM via CWM so I disabled my lagfix first, then did a reboot into recovery. From there I chose to backup and restore and after all that I still run into the same problem at the boot animation.
I try to manually backup via CWM and then factory reset then restore via CWM and there I run into an error saying that no .android_secure blah was not found so it skips the restore of that. I again run into the same probem at boot.
I try to do an advance restore to just restore my data. Still the same error, and the same problem at boot.
I am only able to boot with no issues after a factory reset with no restore meaning all data is lost...So I was wondering is there any way to just restore some parts from the nandroid backup like messages and such...I would assume that the problem is with my apps that had been on sd...which were actually none at all except the manual installation of MiniSquadron I guess. I don't care for the data of the other apps, I just need my messages. I did have a titanium backup but it isn't very recent since I did not expect this problem to occur.
Any help is much appreciated!
I dont have specific information on restoration of messages because I have not yet looked into it - but I was able to recover a few files from a nandroid backup using unyaffs which extracts the content of the nandroid img files. Maybe you can extract the sms file ( /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db) from data.img and push it using adb shell.
In future, I'd suggest SMS backup app from the market - it backs up and restores into your gmail account.
Ohhh! I'll check out the img files later when I get home. I was afraid of looking into them expecting hard to discern, indescript file names I don't know how to make use of. But that file you pointed out seems obvious enough. I hope it's somehow usable without the full backup. Perhaps a simple move with Root Explorer app would work too? I'm not all too familiar with using adb commands...
Yes I have that app but I don't use it often for backup and restore jobs since I tried several times in the past to restore from backup and always seem to be missing more recent messages.
Thanks for the advice though! I'll report success/failure soon.
I don't seem to have anything inside my com.providers.telephony folder when I extracted data.img...Any ideas?
nvm! Found it in dbdata.img... will update this if this works.
Yes - a simple move with Root Explorer should work too.
It doesn't seem to work... No messages show up even after several retries with reboots I tried opening up the file within root explorer since it has sqlite viewer and it gives me an error..I forgot exactly what but it doesn't let me look within the database unlike if I try doing the same with the original mmssms.db file currently on my phone. I tried sqlite viewer on pc and when I attempt to open the file nothing shows up. Any work around to this? Is it possible for even this file to be corrupt in the backup...that's kinda devastating news..any way to repair this?
Hi everyone,
My home button and the "swipe from the top" has disappeared since my last restart. I really have no idea what's happened and now I am using the apps called "Button Savior" to return the home screen.Maybe thid was because I have deleted some system files from system/data/data/com.android. providers.settings. I have restarted several times and it didn't work for my device. Now its really inconvenient to use the Kindle Fire HD. My current software version is 7.1.13. Could you guys help me to solve this problem? Thank you very much in advance.
maybe pull the rom in the development section and see if you can get the deleted files from it?
the only time my framework dissapeared was when i was trying to install the play store. i got it back by renaming a couple google framework apk's in the system folder and restarting...
Hi adiliyo,
How can I pull the Rom in the development section? As I have deleted many system files, I think I am in a much bigger trouble than yours.

if you can't get the individual files, maybe reflashing that rom will fix your problems
This happened to me, and some other folks. Look for a thread asking about how to view/run settings.
Anyway, some fixes mentioned were to turn off notifications for Gmail - hard to do if you can't get to settings, though.
What worked for me was to try and side-load an application - copy an APK file to the 'downloads' folder on your KFHD via a connected computer using the windows file explorer, or ADB - and then install the APK. In my case by clicking on it using a file manager. The KFHD told me that I would have to enable foreign application installs to finish the install of the side-loaded APK, and took me to that portion of settings that dealt with that. In that section was the 'Reset to Factory Defaults' button.
I pressed the reset button, and got everything back. Earlier applications (google play store) that I hadn't un-installed in an attempt to fix the problem were still there. Super User was intact. I downloaded & installed everything again, and all is working as it should be.
Until Amazon comes clean with this walking ad-server, details on how to modify it without introducing issues are going to be sketchy . It's just our lot in life, if you'll pardon. I appreciate having super user access, and all the Google apps I love to use, but what's really required is the ability to modify the boot loader. Until that's available, it's going to be try until it fails, and then scramble to recover.
Nice HW, but limited by Amazon's vision of the customers.

It works!!!! all the missing parts have come back. the Go launcher EX has saved in Cloud.
solution
download an app called my android, open the app go to my apps and find the settings app then go to device and then go to factory reset. its the only way I found to access settings when drop down didn't work. after resetting to factory my buttons all came back after doing the tooltip for startup
What worked for me on my AF tablet was to uninstall all 4 Google APK files, then uninstall the Launcher Hijack. The tablet swipe down and home button both came back for me. I then re-installed the Google APKs, but didn't re-install Launcher Hijack. Tablet works fine, functions are normal, just have to put up with seeing the default Amazon screen first before tapping the Nova Launcher icon to get to my custom screen, a minor inconvenience, and I didn't have to do a factory reset.
Hi,
I'm running Slim ICS 4.2, with semaphore kernel.
I tried installing the 4.2 JB camera, and the photosphere didn't work. Before trying to flash the file, I did a nand backup.
Since the camera didn't work, I just restored my backup.
But now for some reason gtalk disappeared from my phone. The icon is on the home screen, but when I click it, a warning appears saying "App isn't installed".
In the app drawer, the app doesn't appear, neither in the "Apps" menu in the settings.
I've tried several things now, the most extreme of which was factory reset + wipe cache + wipe dalvik cache + format /system + reinstall slim ics 4.2. Even with a fresh install, Talk wouldn't appear anywhere.
There is a "Talk.apk" in /system/app (and I didn't put it there manually). Tried installing it and it obviously doesn't let me (with the default android apk installer, I don't know if there are others out there).
Another thing I've noticed was that the chrome icon I had on the home screen changed to a little android figure (could be from semaphore). Other than that, everything seems pretty much normal.
I use gtalk a lot, so I really need this working. I don't know what else to do.
Just found out a couple more things:
- Apparently the weird icon on Chrome also happened on my girlfriend's ICS tablet, so that has nothing to do with the problem.
- Found this link: h**p://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Barebones (I can't post links, so you have to copy/paste)
When I do ls on /system/apps, there is a "Talk.apk" there. However, when I tried removing it, it returned "No such file or directory". (screenshot attached)
Also, when I do "pm list packages", the talk package isn't there (com.google.android.talk)
After that I tried deleting "Talk.apk" through OI File Manager (the default file manager of slim) and it just fails.
I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to have a mobile data or flashlight toggle in the quicksettings on stock marshmallow. I did see good lock does have a data toggle, but it won't install on my phone either? Package installs, then says reboot and after reboot it isn't installed anywhere that I can tell.
So far, the best I've found for Marshmallow (stock) is this:
http://vforum.vn/diendan/showthread...-loi-mat-Data-Mobile-toggle-tren-Android-6-0-
But it disappears on reboot. You have to rerun the app after reboot. But since I reboot rarely, it's not so bad. Works on my Canadian Note 4.

if you edit others.xml system/csc with Notepad = https://notepad-plus-plus.org/ and add these lines...
not sure if the enable camera is working since I have xposed anyways and fixes. but you can not rearrange the order or it will disappear, the flashlight toggle,
this is the order I use, just rearrange it to the order you want...
then you will need to wipe data for this to work, since it has to be there on first boot of installation... my personnel roms don't work no more since MM, so I edit all the files I want put them in its place and wipe data. tada all good, then make a backup of ur first stock rom, when u want to start clean just restore ur backup, or just wipe data.

I am on Paranoid Android ROM. I can't change the number of columns of quick settings tiles. I already invesitigated and found that I have to change the quick_settings_num_columns value in the res/values/integers.xml, I decompiled, moded and recompiled the SystemUI.apk, but when I flash it or change it directly using Root Explorer (with the correct permissions) and reboot, the status bar is gone and my background too. If I try to restore the original I get the message System UI has stopped. I don't know what to do, if someone can help me I would appreciate it.
Dirty flash the system to restore. Paranoid doesn't support this kind of customization
