I have tried almost all available Google Camera mods but none work perfectly like Camera NX or the default Google Camera.
The stock Moto Camera is not great either.
The HDRs on the GCam Mods never seem get it right.
Kindly advise.
Hopefully linking apks on drive is ok, but this is the one I use. HDR+ works well, and the auto feature activates appropriately (some versions would automatically enable HDR+ when needed). Only issue I've found is there's a fair bit of noise in some darker shots. Video seems to work fine but slow motion just records at normal rate.
If you want to quickly access GCAM searching for "double tap power button" in settings allows you to enable the feature. For some reason Moto hid the option so it doesn't appear unless you search.

does the camera work with other apps or can you only use the system app?
I'm particularly interested in
DMD Panorama
Lapse It
Fotor
can they be used?
I don't know about any of those specifically, but the android Camera API certainly works. Most 3rd party camera apps probably won't recognize the hardware zoom buttons (they seem to work as volume up/down by default), but the special purpose camera app I'm working on seems to be functioning well so far.
ah so zoom is special to the hardware on the device
zooming should still work fine if the app supports pinch zooming.
so does anyone use these apps on the Samsung successfully with zoom?
The "paper camera" app that comes with the camera (AT&T version, anyway) can operate the zoom using an onscreen slider, so zoom physically works in the Camera API, but unless the individual app specifically decides to intercept the hardware volume up/down keys and map them to zoom, then it will need some other way to control zoom (like the onscreen slider in paper camera). How many apps do that (other than the native samsung app), I have no idea.

Try using search to help you answer questions.
I'd like to collect cool stuff we can do on Lollipop which lately came to most variants.
If you have a suggestion I'll consider taking it into this first post and give you proper credit
1. Extended Notifications on Lockscreen
Go to Settings > Sounds and notifications > While locked: and then select either "Show all content" or "Hide sensitive content" to have extended notifications on the lockscreen
2. Seeing approximation of when you're battery will be empty
Lollipop visually plots a graph with a prediction on when your battery will be empty
3. Using Ampere from the store, to see charging currents
Only works on L. There were tools that made this possible on pre-L but it was buggy and not available on newer sammy devices. Google Play
Things that are not new or not working but woth to check from time to time:
a. Search through your settings
In case you didn't notice, your settings screen has a search button now
b. Camera API allowing for RAW shots and "real" camera apps that can pre-proccess the raw image data!
https://github.com/PkmX/lcamera - Not compatible, but it seems to be the first developer to built a RAW camera app. Maybe we have a custom rom in the future that supports the camera api?
The camera API improvement was the first thing I was hoping for after the Lollipop update, but it seems that Samsung is not supporting the new camera API.
I have installed Camera FV-5 and it should make full use of the new camera API (with RAW support) but it still states that the device does not support RAW capture. Also an improved control of shutter speed is not available, so it seems Samsung did not support this.
(SM-N910F, 5.0.1)
I am still on 4.4.4 and I have the search button in settings.

Sad, I guess then it will be impossible to have a custom rom with camera api if we don't have the camera driver source from sammy?

I hear ya, I feel your pain @foo
Ha! Why do I have the feeling you don't take me serious?
But really, a lot of people are complaining, that they are getting blurry fotos because of subject movement in combination with too slow shutter speeds, e.g. kids playing indoors. With KitKat and below there was no possibility to control the shutter speed properly, but with Lollipop Google introduced a new API that allows to control the shutter speed and solve such situations in trade with higher ISO noise.
But Samsung left the door closed
Camera recording modes are separate now (slow and fast motion), under ''mode'' button. Time lapse goes 30x faster compared to 8x it was with kitkat. In kikat I set video to FHD 60fps, but needed to set it everytime I opened the camera. Now it seems it remembers.

Oh forgot to mention es-file explorer and I suppose any other file explorers too, who are properly rewritten for LP are now supporting writing to SD card again :good:
Thread closed, as its similar to another Thread. OP, @underlines read my PM.
Working Gcam mod 5.1.018 avaiable from the below thread
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/
Please find below the apk link

Haven't tried portrait mod, although option is there.
Updated app 11/03/2018: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/MGC_5.1.018_v2e_tolyan009_v1.3.5.apk
Notes:
Features are same as stock Camera + google camera features available in older versions.
Portrait mode and hdr+ requires proper camera2api implemented.

This app has old style portrait mode that requires moving phone upwards after shot, it's nothing fancy since this was avielable since like 2.5

enable the new portrait mode from b-s-g mod settings. It will switch lens blur
Portrait mode does not work. Only displays the icon on the screen.
How do you get this APP worked?
I'm on LineageOS 14.1, already added "persist.camera.HAL3.enabled=1" with a magisk module, and 'getprop | grep camera' shows it's enabled, but the APP you provided still keeps force stopping. neither can Camera2 Probe from playstore detects any information about Camera2 API.
Could you please give some advice on my issue? Thank.
BTW, I see GCAM 5.1 is for 8.0+, so are you on LineageOS 15.1?
Update: Seems something's wrong with my ROM... It works now, but can you use HDR+? Which profile did you select?
Update 2: Camera is broken if I add "persist.camera.HAL3.enabled=1", even AIDA64 can't detect the camera, so forget about Camera2 API...
I see no HDR option, does that mean HDR is just automatically on or that it hasnt' been added in yet?
Keep up the good work!

Portrait mod requires camera2api enabled. Almost of the moto doesn't have it enabled by default except those with OS 7.1+.
Try with latest custom rom.
Check this thread as well. https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/themes/gcam-moto-z-play-t3711826/amp/
Its showing app doesn't compatible with your device ..I am using AOSP ext 7.1.2
Works on stock 7.0 for photos. Had to lower to 720p for video. Would be nice to get 1080p working for video.
As mentioned by others; can't find HDR(+).
Installed the latest APK on my Moto X that is running stock 7.0.0. I can get portrait mode to work by switching the camera from back to front to back.
I read a few threads about the modded camera app and dont see how to enable Camera2API. Any suggestions?
EDIT: Is there an option to have Pics saved directly to the SD card? I dont see it under "settings"
EDIT2: Looks like I need to edit build.prop and enable "persist.camera.HAL3.enabled=1".
EDIT3: After editing the build.prop, the Camera app stopped working. It just showed a black screen.
Non of them support HDR.. I'm sticking with Moto Camera.
Not work on Moto X Play
Not work on Moto X Play why??????
I found a fix on a youtube channel for portrait mode for front camera after a lot of googling. The key is to set a manual iso (idk why) while using front camera. The link to that is here
https://drive.google.com/file/d/16BT6C02pgvO3usJxCe8C0u_sVi9CbMOI/view?usp=sharing
Instruction -
Enable camera2api.
Download app, instalL.
Open settings and then do the settings u like.(i use pixel 2 and pixel 2017 zsl+ ) and other obvious settings( like turning on portrait mode etc.)
After that set the MANUAL FIXED BLACK LEVEL ONSET to 63.50 and enable.
Now everytime you use the front camera you have to turn that left slider (which i think is of iso) to 100 or any other value from auto, then hdr+ and portrait mode in front camera will also work.
This is not my work , i am only sharing it.
Credits to people who made this (arnovag2 ,TCHNO VKKI youtube channel guy etc.)
This is my first post and i dont really know what to add in your posts ,(also not liking typing this much) but i thought everyone should know this fix.
Hit thanks if this helped you.(actually idk what thanks is for LOL)
Cheers!

I checked it ... it doesn't work in miui globle stable rom 9.2.5 in redmi4....i also tried many apks but no one is running correctly if front cam works back cam doesn't even some of didn't even opening and keeps closing all the time...(my phone is rooted and camera2 api is enabled)
the app on works in custom roms like rr rom, pixel experience rom...
It works, thanks! Tested on redmi 4x with MIUI9.2. Just don't go with the ISO too high. ISO3200 and above force crash camera app.
Front & Back portrait working nicely. But video recording getting some continues sound.
Hi all,
I apologize if this had been answered but, is there any way to make the Gcam port recognized as the main camera app?
The reason I ask is because I want to map it to the gesture shortcuts and it will only let me map the Mi camera.
Thanks
Hi, just try disabling the mi camera - your other camera should be recognized as stock then.
I've done the same with the mi fotos app (since I prefere google photos) - I disabled the app, now I can use google fotos from Mi camera.
Edit: it could result in unexpected behaviour (e.g. bootloop or whatever) so on your own risk ^^
I really don't want to do that but I would wait with google camera. The MI camera is pretty sick (at least on the MI9) and the gcam kinda sucks and is lacking tons of important features. Consider your options here ^^

Such as?
If go to settings > Manage Apps > Three dots in top corner > Default Apps
You can then set a default for Camera. When i click on my Camera option I can pick either Stock cam or Gcam. Can only pick by Icon though, I have a diff icon for Gcam
I havnt tried this for mapping purposes but hopefully works
Undecided which I prefer so far of the two cameras

Don't take it personally. The google camera mod has been amazing (for my previous Redmi devices) but it's really hard recommending it at this point.
It just keeps crashing on my device and I can't record @60fps. The MIUI camera really caught up
Back to the task at hand: you can set the google camera as your default camera but the shortcut will still open the MI camera (same analogy like the photo galleries). Try disabling the MI camera app (you can try it via adb - just check out the link I've posted!) but be careful! It can result in unexpected behaviour - such as bootlooping or constant crashing reports etc.
Good luck ^^ feel free to tell us how it went.

The stock camera is better overall. The one area where gcam does excel is night shot. Other than that, the contrast is overblown on gcam (dark colors look darker than they should, and the bright ones look brighter than they should, which results in exaggerated detail)
And for video, 4k60 is really good on the stock camera, and isn't available on gcam.
