Ummm. You can't just install the DRM patch without a modified kernel. You have to build a kernel + dtbo + do some modifications to the kernel and ramdisk to get the Camera fuction back. That is how I did in XZ1, XZ1 Compact and XZ premium. Remember XZ2 use a and b slots.
But but.. I think it is possible to apply the DRM patch + a modified kernel without using TWRP or any custom recovery.

Hi is there a twrp version for the xperia xz 2 been released yet? Or a way to root it? I have managed to unlock the bootloader on my device with no camera errors just needing root access now.. Magisk won't install from my handset because I can't find my phones original boot image file..

You "unlocked" it with the developer settings or did you unlocked it via the Sony website?
Both. After you get your unlock code from Sony developers when giving your ime number download adb tools and sdk manager and type in the relevant command prompts into platform-tools folder. Any idea how to easily root this device?

So you don't need a drm patch?
The source of the device got released, at the moment they are building the twrp tool.
I think root is the next step after that.

I didn't need no patch I just followed those steps and it's completely risk free. There maybe a way to dual boot from adb and install magisk then your rooted but I'm happy to wait

I think if a twrp dual recovery bootloader from adb drivers is created for device h8216 then it will solve the rooting issue. My phones bootloader is unlocked so that's all I require to install magisk and root it. Nothing else seems to work

Hi there,
I think we should make a simple thread to sum up everything we know about root, since the main talking thread is long, here are the main informations:
Xperia Z5:
- No locked bootloader root yet
- AndroPlusKernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/kernel-andropluskernel-v1-t3246100
- TWRP here http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/twrp-2-8-7-0-z5-rootable-kernel-t3240032
- CWM booting but not usable: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/recovery-clockworkmod-recovery-sony-t3249782
- Unlocked BL dirty rooting available and working as intended: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/dirty-root-solution-unlocked-bl-t3233274
- Dumped original firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/general/ftf-files-sony-xperia-z5z5-dual-t3214397
- Xposed works but you need to let it bootloop a few times
Xperia Z5 Compact:
- No locked bootloader root yet
- Zombie Kernel testing release here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-compact/orig-development/kernel-zombie-t3224735
- Unlock bootloader root available (http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-compact/development/dirty-root-solution-unlocked-bl-t3230524)
- Prerooted firmware available for unlocked BL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-...-rooted-32-0-5-32-firmware-one-click-t3231520
- Xposed doesn't work with prerooted firmware
Currently we need to:
- Compile Zombie Kernel for Z5
- Improve TWRP support
- Create prerooted-firmware
- Most obviously and most hardly, find exploit for Locked BL root
Ok I'm not an Xperia pro, just got my first one few days ago, but still a android and linux geek, so if there is mistakes in my post, or update I haven't seen, notify me

Huge thanks, But I can't get it working...
I open BL, I fastboot flashed the kernel, then I fastboot booted on the recovery (Which doesn't show a black screen as expected but a real non-fully-working twrp for me) and I tried to install Supersu but I write an error then...
EDIT: Kinda glitchy to do, but works.
If anyone has Xposed working, please make a tutorial
Okay so this is my first Xperia device and my second android device (used to have a Nexus 5 so rooting was simple). Can anyone ELI5 the root situation?
I understand that the TA partition contains DRM keys to make X-Reality etc work and that unlocking the bootloader will wipe this TA partition and the features will stop working. My main confusion comes from - if other lollipop devices have rooting methods for locked bootloaders, why don't these methods work on the Z5? Sorry if this is extremely obvious and I'm an idiot.
Most android devices have either already unlocked BL or you have to. For example, Nexus 5 needed to unlock the BL, as well as the OnePlus One, but those devices don't contain DRM so you don't loose anything when unlocking

I'm still confused here. I don't see clear instructions for root process, probably because this is my first Xperia device. Neither do I know if using this modded stock kernel and doing this adb thing few posts back will break the DRM thingy and camera features or not.

There is nothing clear enough for beginner yet. Sooner or later there will be a TWRP fully working and it will be easy.
Try the dirty method, but don't do things that you are not sure that will work. Ask us if needed
I don't want to lose features because of unlocked bootloader. I guess I'm going to survive without root til there's TWRP and pretty much flash n go root
You will maybe never be able to root without loosing feature. Xperia devices work like this for ages..
The only way you could would be that we find a flaw in Android, which could either arrive soon, or never...

Google "Verified Boot Android" .. there is almost 100% probability that locked bootloader root will never be achieved, because of this security feature. Verified Boot was introduced in KitKat, but almost nobody used it in so strict mode implementation... Until now, no single firmware using Verified Boot was ever rooted without either custom kernel (must unlock bootloader) or leaked engineering bootloader (try ask Sony engineers for it).
This is an unrooted 100% Stock J320AUCU3BQI5 firmware.
Working on all exynos j3 models!! (You first need root and to flash with flashfire)
AG models will probably need to enable oem unlock in dev options.
Download
As I said no root, but you can always downgrade back to mm if you need root.
Btw the eng_ root kernel won't boot the system, but it will let you mount as RW and you can edit things thru adb... someone figure out root on this thing!
Thanks to @Iurop for testing AG
@DamienMc thanks for assist me and help me. My J320AG now works with Nougat 7.1.1 without any problem.

Hi lurop thanks for your reply! but i have another question to flash nougat file do i have to root or i dont have to
Hi, yes you have to root the phone following the method posted above. Then install flashfire and use it to flash the rom.
Have you do something similar already?
If you do not wish to root and your device is the A or AZ model you can update with Odin.
I fixed and uploaded the full firmware @Iurop provided. You can find that here
Finally got time to mess around with root...and unfortunately we do need a new eng_boot.
But fortunately, like I mentioned, we can still use our old eng_root boot to acquire a root shell.
Btw noticed this Rom does not update stock recovery. I'll package up a fix for it tomorrow, if anyone actually cares

Thanks @DamienMc
I wonder if I could port this to the J320FN?
stock recovery patch
I'll update the rom one day, but this patch is the easiest way to update things...
To apply you must use your pc, use Odin to flash the included eng_root kernel. When it boots the logo will remain onscreen, after two minutes or so you can click the recovery.bat and let it do its thing.

Isn't eng_boot.tar just a boot.img? Could we extract build.prop from the Nougat ROM and the boot.img from the firmware to update the Root_J320A.zip in your root thread?
@DJJosephJumper
That method will work, we just can't boot while rooted with the stock boot. We need a permissive boot. if you edit that root like you mentioned, it'll only boot to the logo with a working shell. Su commands work there, so it will with with permissive.
Eng_root will do the same, boot to logo only with a rooted shell
I did not find a subforum dedicated to P9 lite mini version so I will post this guide here , as I know that many users that have this phone wish to have it rooted but don't know how.
I apologise to mods in advance if this is wrong place to post this.
Before I start, I will tell you that I am not a programmer and that I just followed a guide to the letter that @txmt5 told me about. So all credits go to him.
Lets start:
0. Make sure that your phone has USB DEBUGGING enabled.
1. a) You will need unlocked bootloader. There is simple official solution to get unlock code by huawei. Just go to their website , UNLOCK tab and follow instructions.
b) Once you get unlock code just use this simple tool by @Mandrigan. BE WARNED : use only unlock bootloader option as other options may brick your phone.
There is also an option to use cmd but I found this one easier to follow and it worked anyway.
Once you unlock your bootloader your phone will give you a warning about it before every boot. This is normal for every device just that some keep silent about it
2. Just install magisk app by @topjohnwu from here. As you do not have costum recovery (as far as I know it is still not developed for our device) you will not be able to root it as usual but it will require additional steps.
3. Get an original unpatched version for your frimware from here. It is really important that you find a right one. It will use the same code that is written in your "update info" in settings so it is easy to find.
4. From the update.zip file you hopefully downloaded in step before you will need to extract BOOT.img file.
To do this use huawei update extractor app by @worstenbrood. I personally use version 0.9.9.5 and extracted only BOOT.img .
It may look like it hangs on full green bar once you extract it. If it hangs for more than 5 minutes it is safe to cancel it and take the BOOT.img file it created. This happened to me and it worked anyways.
5. Put the BOOT.img file from previous step on your device and use magisk on it. It will create patched_boot.img that you will transfer back to your PC
6. Download adb fastboot tools (put patched_boot.img from previous step inside that folder) and HiSuite (just for huawei drivers)
7. Connect your phone to your PC and go to fastboot tools folder (from previous step) and shift+right click anywhere in that folder and take open CMD window here option.
The commands are as follows :
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
after it reboots input
Code:
adb fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img
Your device should be rooted now
You will have root permission but you will not be able to use any other fancy magisk repo app as you do not have TWRP or other custom recovery. And there is really high chance that you will have to repeat this whole thing after every update (it is just my guess) .
I really hope that this guide will help someone
P.S. I wish to thank all people that I tagged and let them know that it was not my wish to spam them but to give them proper credit.

I am really glad that you find my guide helpful.
When you go to magisk->install you will need to patch boot file.
Since wedo not have custom recovery you need to provide a path (impossible)
to BOOT.img file so magisk can patch it.
So you just put boot.img you downloaded to phome or sd card and provide path to it

I was on cmd. Also i have e-mailed Huawei support to give it to me. Do you get the unlock code option on their site? I swear 4 days ago i got it and now it is gone... If you would like, you could add me on discord or such to tell you more details.

I'm on Mi A2 pie stable ..as expected xiomi not enabled camera2api still...if anyone has found any method for enabling camera 2 api on pie stable rom please help me...
It would be nice if someone can upload boot.img from latest pie, so we can patch it with magisk to gain root. After that we can edit build.prop to enable camera2 api.

The beta image is the same as the stock image. The beta patched boot.img has already been uploaded. Check the forums.
I read today this on searching in google to enable camera2api without root in mia2..
I'm in feb update (india).
I downloaded these patch boot file & trying to go in fastboot mode..
But when i connect my phone to laptop (windows 7), there is connecting sound i heard ..
I enabled already oem unlocking option & usb debugging in phone through tapping 7 times & all ..
But when after inserting commands in adb & entered , it's saying waiting for device..
& Nothing is shown in screen in mi a2 , other than fastboot bunny..
Can anyone help me what's going on wrong here ?

With pixel camera, quality is superb. As for stock its a little better after the march update. Yes, it formated data but you have a tutorial for botloader unlock and rot without losing data.

Where is the tutorial ?
I'm not unlocking bootloader..
Just temporary rooting phone & unrooting on restart.
& Where to find these pixel camera ?
& March update already rolled back because of many bugs like always ..

Well if you are just rooting, you wont lose data, you just need patched boot image to flash with cmd. You have tutorial in link I sent you, just skip the part with unlocking bootloader, and folow tutorial. You have all of needed tutorial here on xda, just dig a little.
Yeah i'm doing the same...
Just booting the patched image..
What about pixel camera ?
Do you have link for downloading that apk ?

Interesting wording. If you mean that you can now toggle OEM unlocking on, then unlocking the bootloader with fastboot is the same no matter what device you have.

Sorry for that lol But what I meant was just any root method using magisk because I used the latest 20.2 and it failed for me. And TWRP if any . Just a point in the right direction basically ?

Like @p70shooter said. There is no other way to root besides magisk, and there is no TWRP as of yet. If rooting with 20.2 didn't work, then try 20.1. You can find it here :good: https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases

Don't know. I just use stable, like they recommend. I know people do use Canary just fine but can't help you there

This what I'm getting when I keep trying to patch it. And it is the correct stock image with my build number.
Edit : I'm just going to have to do this after work . I thought I had time but I'm just rushing probably just missing everything.
Thanks for the help guys

Just a little FYI for you my friend. Have you downloaded the factory image coinciding with your current build? If not, then do so, then extract the factory image, then extract the image.zip, then pull the boot.img from there, place it on your phones internal storage, then try to patch it with magisk. I just did it myself with the 20.2 stable version and it worked fine :good:
