The situation:
1. Mi Max 2 is unblocked.
2. Has TWRP 3.2.1-0.
3. Has been rooted before  (used in MacroDroid 3.22.0 for starting GPS and TomTom Go and checked with Root Check 4.3.7.0), but root disappeared after an update. Now running Android 7.1.1 (Nougat).
4. Rooting again always fails.
a. with Mi Max 2 Rooter`via my PC with W10Pro.
b. with Magisk-v16.0 with TWRP.
c. with lazyflasher-no-verity-opt-encrypt and SuperSU-v2.82-201705271822 with TWRP.
They al run OK, with only the message after:
Checking patch status:
--- Already patched, attempting to find stock backup :victory:
--- Stock backup restored :victory:
After Wis cache / dalvik and Herstart (takes a while) the Mi Max 2 is still NOT rooted :crying::crying::crying: (checked with Root Check 4.3.7.0).
What am I doing wrong, please help. SciFi.
There are a few thoughts I have:
1 - in your root management tool, did you give your root required apps permission to root?
2 - have you tried a "fresh" install of your ROM from fastboot (if using official ROM) with full wipe?
3 - in TWRP, can you find the su app (likely in /system/bin or /system/xbin)?
@mollex
Here is what i did for a successful Magisk root
1) Clean flashed the Global stable 9.5.4.0 via Fastboot method and set up as normal ( i tried this procedure on Global Dev rom, you will fail the safety net check )
2) Once set up, boot to Stock Recovery and wiped twice to ensure it is clean
3) flashed TWRP 3.2.1.0
4) flash MAGISK V14 via TWRP, again, V14 only i tried to flash v16 directly it throwed a lot of error messages , once magsik v14 is flashed boot into system and install the latest magisk manager .apk
5) install the latest Magisk Manager then it will ask you to install the latest version of Magisk , install and reboot
once rebooted here is what you will see , a fully rooted mi max 2 with safetynet fully passed, greetings from the Philippines
Thanks bmg002,
1. Of course.
2. A full wipe costs me 2 days work, I 'll try any other way.
3. I'll have a look. Not found.....
fire.fox_009,
I will try Magisk again, according your advise.
Were can I find MAGISK V14?
Clean flash of the Global stable 9.5.4.0 means wipe Data, System and Dalvik /ART cache. I loos 2 day's work. Try to find another way.
Everything I in TWRP do with Magisk gives: No digest file found, followed with a 225 error.
Thanks (from the Netherlands) anyway for advise.
PS. I am rooted now !!!!! Used the latest MAGISK: Magisk-v16.4.zip. :highfive: you all.

Friends,
Need your expert advise to root my Xiaomi Mi3 Indian (Running Stable MIUI6).
Based on the suggestions/tips given forums, I have doing following things.
I have tried following things ---
1) Tried flashing using SuperSu 2.45 using updater app - NO Luck, It just can't open the zip file (for that matter updater app can't flash ANY ZIP file except ROMs)
2) Tried Flashing SuperSU 2.45 using Mi recovery, but it stops at 98% (Same thing for any other Zip file except ROM)
3) Tried flashing TWRP and CWM using Mi Recovery, but Again as I reported earlier, it just stops at 98% and gives error
4) Used FastBoot, to Install TWRP/CWM but somehow after completing all the operations, When I reboot to recovery, I see Mi Recovery and NOT TWRP or CWM?
5) I have also followed youtube video given by "Andy Geeks" but no luck, it again reboots to Mi Recovery and not in CWM.
I just need to root phone to install Viper4Android. Any help is highly appreciated.
I have MIUI 6 In Indian Mi3.
Please mention which version of cwm did you use.
like r9 / r10 / r11 etc.

Here what i did:
-First updated my phone(official MIUI V5) to MIUI V6(OTA)[full wipe]
-Download CWM recovery r7 final version Cancro
-Download latest SU.zip
-Go to updater> select update package> CWM recovery and update
-Go in recovery mode>advance> select system 2
-Select Install from sd> selcect su.zip>select system2>flash>reboot
- You will get "Fix root" select "yes" to continue.
P.S Me too rooted my phone just to use V4A(MI3 W)
any recovery except cwm r7(and before) somehow don't work with mi recovery flash or fastboot flash! Recoveries like TWRP and cwm r8+ need a custom recovery to be installed.
Happened with me too....
Well, I had the same problem and what I did was that I flashed the r11 recovery using fastboot mode! And then flashed other zips from recovery mode! This will definitely work! I made this account specially to reply to your question
I flashed the Russian Firmware for my A5 (2017), but the Magisk 13.3 root method didnt work.
So far, I have failed in rooting Nougat with the following methods:
1. Magisk 13.3
2. CF Root although this is for Nougat. The phone goes into bootloop.
Currently, out of options as not too many options/info available for this phone.
Any definite way of rooting on this device?
[EDIT:]
SOLVED:
Flashed this version of SuperSU through TWRP and it worked!
Once installed SuperSU will ask KNOX detected, try to disable: Press OK.
Going to test it out & see if anything is off about it.
EDIT 2:
False Alarm. SuperSU flashed but does not have Root access as apss dont have SU Binary access. This is getting frustrating.
Any other way to root?

Hey! Thanks for the reply. So, I just Flash this in TWRP like all Zip's and then Flash Magisk?
EDIT: It seems the boot image is something I have already tried, except I flashed SuperSU after, instead of Magisk. If you don't mind, could you go through this post, as this is the only problem remaining.
Samsung A5 2017 [A520F} Root issue resolved.
Gonna leave the steps for future reference if anyone needs it:
Firmware, Magisk & dm_verity all linked in my original post.
1. Install Samsung Nougat 7.0 (Russian Version in this case)
2. Flash TWRP
3. Try to flash dm-verity through TWRP
3. If it doesn't work go to Wipe > data > Change System Files > FAT & F4 wipe to change
3. Flash dm-verity again. The .zip should flash successfully this time.
4. Flsh Magisk 13.3. It will flash.
and you are rooted!

Hi, will smart switch still work after rooting?
Can anyone help me with the steps to update to Android Oreo (OOS 5) from OOS 4.5.1 retaining root?
Below are the current setup of my phone
Rooted - Yes (Magisk version 14.0)
Recovery - TWRP version 3.1.1-2
Current Rom - Stock OOS 4.5.1
I haven't had any problems in updating earlier but now when I try to flash the full oreo rom from TWRP, I am getting error 7.
Below are the steps I followed.
Downloaded the full OTA zip.
Rebooted to recovery.
Unistalled Magisk.
Tried to flash the Oreo OTA zip. At this point TWRP showed error 7.
Reinstalled Magisk and rebooted to system.
Phone is working fine.
you need to use latest twrp for oreo, for example blue spark version, search for it on xda...
Follow this guide here:
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/how-to-install-oos-5-0-over-rooted-4-5-1.684519/#post-17134194
It's exactly what you need.
All Oreo ROM threads clearly state under the "Instructions" heading, that you need either AkhilNarangs Modified TWRP or Blu_Sparks TWRP V50. Using stock TWRP would result in an error.
If the error may still persist, try flashing a different firmware.
Just to get some more clarity.
I have the original OTA full zip. Should I download the zip file from your thread?
Can I install the custom version of TWRP using the official TWRP app? I am bit confused on how to install it.
Is it important that I should use Magisk 14.3 or will v 14 have the same effect?
Hey there,
I can tell you how I have done it yesterday (successfully).
1. Update TWRP - I prefer blu sparks version 8.52 (Link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=27225); you can do it by using your installed TWRP Version (Install .img)
2. Dirty flash OOS 4.5.1 again (to remove root / magisk) - once finished DO NOT reboot into system, reboot into Recovery/TWRP to verify the new version and afterwards to system
3. flash OOS 5.0 (Oreo) - dirty flash is okay
4. flash magisk Version 14.3
These are the steps I have followed yesterday and all is running perfect and without any problems.
BR
Which recovery is mentioned in this linked discussion resp. in the linked download? Is it blu_spark TWRP?
Regards
Clark
This worked perfectly for me.
Glad to hear that everything is good ?
I did the same and I was suddenly encrypted and no chance to get my data back. Still forcing clean my phone because I cannot format the device. I get always an error message in TWRP like: unable to format to remove encryption
I go crazy...
Enter recovery and wipe data and then cache.
Then reflash the rom and probably you will be good to go.
Hello
I was on B180 (PRA-LX1C432) rooted with magisk
No updates available in settings/update firmware, but connecting to PC HiSuite B194 appeared (which seems to be for Honor 8 lite by the way). It downloaded it, pushed it to phe phone, but when rebooting it goes to twrp... so obviously I'm still on B180
I imagine we have to flash back stock recovery before updating ? And then twrp again, magisk flash, etc ?
Thanks !
About OTA over magisk I found that on P9 forum:
1) unroot by Magisk Uninstaller, find the download link in the post https://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...63&postcount=1
2) flash from TWRP original stock boot img
3) wipe Dalwik and Cache from TWRP
3) flash from fastboot original stock recovery
4) let it make OTA update but select in the System Update settings to use Full (not differential) update - it will not delete your apps and settings
maybe the safest way indeed...
But as I "catch" the full ota, maybe I can use fastboot to flash only system and boot, and the reflash magisk to patch new boot img ?
anyone ?
Nobody updated after root ??
Ok, this is what I did and happened:
- In TWRP, flash magisk uninstaller script: ERROR 1. After reboot magisk was still here. That was a bad start...
- So I opened magisk app, click Uninstall and then Complete Uninstall. After that I made a reboot as asked, and device rebooted twice.
- Then, went to download mode and flashed stock recovery. And reboot.
- Then went to settings/updates/download latest full ota. It downloaded but refused to start the install process claiming to free up more than 900MB... Nothing on my internal sdcard so I had to uninstall some apps... cool !
- Then it reboot and installed the update
- First boot took a while, I still have "this device cannot be trusted" on start, and OEM unlock in settings is grayed and ON, so I think the bootloader is still unlocked
- Theme and wallpapers were reset with the update
For now I don't have flashed back twrp neither magisk .
In the meantime have you flashed TRWP and Migistik ? And again: do you have still to update your signature or something went wrong in installing fw B194.
Lastly: what do you mean by "went to download mode and flashed"...
Hi all, as the title implies, I'm a newbie to all this. I tried to root my phone using an online guide on how to root xiaomi mi 9 using TWRP and Magisk. I faced some problems but eventually everything was done as the tutorial said.
Here are the exact steps I've done...
- unlocked the phone via Mi unlocking tool
- started fastboot and installed TWRP 3.3.1-0 ( I installed a version first that didn't start when I pressed both power and volume up, then installed the 331-0 version that worked)
- inside TWRP i installed Magisk 20.4
- The phone restarted but never reach the system. It hangs for sometime on android screen then restarts again and then brings me again to TWRP
I spent quiet sometimes reading online solutions but nothing worked for me...
I tried installing Magisk uninstaller.zip nothing changed. tried wiping cache. Tried installing magisk 20 and 20.3
some solutions recommended installing Magisk 19 0r 17 but they both ended up with error for me.
Please help. I'm on Android 10 with MIUI 11
Never had any problems with magisk What TWRP version have you used?
The steps are the same:
-Unlocked phone.
-TWRP.
-Flash magisk zip (you can install magisk manager, then download latest official magisk zip from it and then flash downloaded zip from TWRP).
-reboot.
Anyway you can fix your system by:
-wipe cache/dalvik.
-FORMAT data (with yes).
I don't think you need this 2 first steps for flashing fastboot ROM but it won't hurt.
-Flash official fastboot ROM in fastboot mod, using mi flash tool or included batch/bash scripts (don't lock your device if you don't want to, choose the right option when you flash, with or without "lock").
Mi 9 Fastboot V11.0.5.0.QFAMIXM Global
Mi 9 Fastboot V11.0.8.0.QFAEUXM EEA
You will loose all your data, apps and settings.
Thanks for your help mate...
I'm using this TWRP version..
----//dl.twrp.me/cepheus/
Strangely enough, my phone started after flashing Magisk-uninstaller-20191011.zip I'm sure i tried this before and it doesn't work.
Anyway, all my app and data are gone. I still want to root though, can you help me? what version of TWRP and Magisk i should use?

I would try flash latest fastboot ROM as i said before it will reflash almost everything And then flash magisk by installing magisk manager and download latest magisk zip through it and flash it with twrp-3.3.1-62-cepheus-mauronofrio TWRP
Sometimes first flash of TWRP don't work, just flash it ones more by fastboot flash twrp twrp-3.3.1-62-cepheus-mauronofrio.img from your pc.
