DEX to SideSync - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I am on Delux rom and the dev didnt remoxe the modded clock from dex so i am unable to use dex as i keep getting fc.
I know i can use sidesync instead but how do i change to sidesync ?
Everytime i connect the cable to dex it automaticly enters dex mode :crying:

try to freeze the 2 dex apps
samsung dex
samsung dex home.
you can also go to system setting/connections/more connection settings and change HDMI mode from dex to hdmi and see if that helps

what is sidesync?
Edit:
nvm.. why use a pc to use your phone when the initial goal was to use the phone like a pc without the need of the actual PC? and from what i can gather it uses the Lan/wifi so its useless to use the dex base.

Nvm the settings i actually found the hdmi settings a few mins after writting the post but forgot to update it. But the very first time you connect dex you get an option to choose either sidesync or dex. And thats waht i was looking for but hdmi is fine as well.
The reason i ise sidesync is to control the phone from the phone as i spend hours tweaking a theme i am working on and i get sore thumbs from holding the phone that long so to ease the task i use mouse and keyboard where sidesync comes very handy.
But thanks for the reply.

oh, i thought it was to find a way to get a dex alternative.
guess were stuck to wait for rom creator to remove 3minit batt and clock system ui integration mod(the reason i think why dex FCs)

Error casting tabs

I've rooted, installed Eureka and everything has been peachy until tonight. Now I'm able to cast YouTube from my tablet and from the player in Chrome but if I try to cast a tab then the Chromecast shows "404 cannot find the requested version of the receiver app." Something something try again later, update the browser's CV extension. I've been able to cast tabs before tonight without issue. Searching was fruitless. Chrome and the cast extension are up to date. Rebooting the desktop and chromecast did not help either.
Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated.
im having the same problem. Im able to use Fling but not Cast a tab
Sorry to hear this, I'll check my own now and do some troubleshooting!
Get back to you shortly with the results of my tests.

Hi All,
Just did some checking and this appears to be a problem based on some changes from Google.
As of the latest updates to the Chrome plugin for chromecast it is no longer trusted against the older receiver (that we use for fling support). This is greatly unfortunate and we'll look to a solution as soon as possible.
In the mean time you can regain this functionality by changing your whitelist provider to google and restarting (however will lose fling and all the other nice goodies), we'll look at getting this fixed as soon as we can.
Kind regards,
Kyonz

Hi All,
I managed to force the receiver version so it believes it's being sent from the old receiver and thus loads correctly.
This appears to be working (have tested via both tab casting and fling) and is now pushed out to the Team Eureka whitelist (you can reboot to force your device to update or it will receiver it within the next 24hours).
Sorry about this bug being experienced and thanks for bringing it to my attention via this thread. If you have any issues please let me know.
Kind regards,
Kyonz

I rebooted the chromecast multiple times and it says that it updates through Eureka but when it's all done I keep getting the message "404 - Not Found cannot load the requested version of the CV receiver app. Please try again later. If the problem persists, try updating the CV extension in your browser".

With the public release of the SDK the receiver went from V1 to V2.
Both should still work (because Plex is still using the old receiver if I'm not mistaken) but there may be something different in the way it gets called such as doing a check on the Whitelist for which receiver is required?
A few things to try:
Make sure you network is set to Home Network not private or public.
Make sure you disable any virtual network cards like what Virtual Box installs.
If on Windows 8 , right click on your wireless network and make sure Sharing is turned ON.
Windows 8.1 Change PC Settings, Network, pick your network, Find devices and content is set to ON.

Well, I tried casting today and without rhyme or reason it started working so, thanks for the suggestions.
Also, I wanted to know can I cast TWC via Chromecast browser because I get the message "contents on this page is not supported"

I suspect it was always a Google Backend problem...
How to implement V2 of the receiver while trying not to break those who still used V1 or had not updated to the new GServices yet.
They didn't succeed at first try I bet! LOL

[Q] Galaxy Gear Live USB Communication Question

Does the Gear Live allow developer access to communication over the USB port? The USB communication would be used to interface a separate MCU with an integrated USB controller with the Gear Live to allow for added functionality for development specific purposes.

hi

GearVR on A5 2016

Hey guys,
currently I'm trying to get the GearVR working with a A5 2016.
I know, it's not meant to run with that model and I don't want a discussion about how it is not fast enough for it.
So I changed my model to the S6 in build.prop, put it in the Gear and nothing happened. I seem to miss some services there to let it trigger the Oculus Software.
Now I installed some APKs and got the Oculus Store and it told me that I needed some updates and startet loading some files and installed them.
If I start a app, the screen goes black for a while and then just crashes on me with something like "Oculus Home has stopped".
This is where I am at the moment.
Plugging in the Phone into the gear won'T trigger anything.
I seam to miss some services or packages there.
Nooooow. Could someone provide me ALL files needed to run the Gear?
Is there a way to export the files from a firmware of the S6?
Thanks!
So I found those apps:
Gear VR Service → com.samsung.android.hmt.vrsvc
Gear VR SetupWizardStub → com.samsung.android.app.vrsetupwizardstub
Gear VR Shell → com.samsung.android.hmt.vrshell
GearManagerStub.apk → com.samsung.android.app.watchmanagerstub
RNB.apk → com.samsung.android.hmt.vrsvc
RNBShell.apk → com.samsung.android.hmt.vrshell
could someone provide them?
Here for you, bro https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4LLzOQW_EV4TzFRWmhqbEFNZkk/view
or http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/g920x-master-thread-guides-firmwares-t3267738
Thanks dude! Got a few questions:
Are those the base files needed to get it running on A5 2016?
Am I allowed to update, or will it stop working after updating?

Didn't had the time lately to root my phone and change model in build.prop.
Without changing it, it seems like it won't work, cause it isn't starting oculus if I connect it.
Maybe I'll take the time in those days and try to do it again.
Hello Montaxx,
you need these Apps to run Oculus Home on your device...
- com.oculus.horizon
- com.oculus.systemdriver
- com.oculus.systemactivities
- com.samsung.android.hmt.vrsystem
- com.facebook.system
- com.facebook.installer
- Gear VR Shell
- Gear VR SetupWizard
I am sure you dont have this apps.
- com.samsung.android.hmt.vrsystem
- com.facebook.system
- com.facebook.installer
- com.oculus.systemdriver
I have uploaded them here (Install all in the archive)

If you would use Oculus Hoem this Cardboards you need...
- a Oculus account
- and the SideloadVR app (all steps are there)
All SideloadVR apps call as a virus but it is false and you dont care if Smart Manager tell you that ist a virus.
Just install it.

So your packet has all that I need to run it?
Do I need to change model too?
No
So I installed your package. Doesn't work. Oculus home is starting, but if I turn my head around it doesn't move
See my second post " Google Cardboard and SideloadVR"
Follow these steps

You must enable the developer mode on Gear VR Service
Screenshot
Go to Settings>Application Manager>Gear VR Service> Manage Storage
Tab 6 times on VR service version.
If you have followed the sideloadVR guide
If manage storage doesnt available please look at the screen shots
1. Install QuickShortcutMaker
2. Search Gear VR Service
3. Tab on the activity
4. THEN try it. A popup comes named "Gear VR Service has stopped" That is right
5. Go to Settings>Application Manager>Gear VR Service> Manage Storage
I installed sideloadVR and also installed the signature + a test-app.
I managed to set me to developer mode in Gear VR Service and set it to "on".
Now if I start Oculus Home and tap "Start VR", it turns black and crashs.
If I turn developer mode off again, I can start VR, but can't look around, just see the menu.
thanks for your effort!
PS: I don't have root and my model is still A5 2016. Didn't change build.prop
So I rooted my device and changed model, but still don't work.
thought i would add my trails too ! ..
im trying to get my S7 Active running the GearVR, and it seems im in same boat as Montaxx,
althou i may be a little closer to a S7 hardware and more likely to get it working if its hardware limited .. than Montax's on a A5 !
as the S7 Active internally is identical to the s7.. so least i know im only battling software wise ! ..
i too have got all the software sorta working .. so Oculus market/app all works. can get into the gearVR service and select dev modes etc
but the one thing i just cannot get to acknowledge is the insertion of the GearVR , or any of the hardware on the gearVR either (touchpad, or buttons like volume etc)
my gearVR defo works as works fine on sons standard S7 ! ...
have copied/altered everything over on build.prop still nothing ...
i thought i would edit more things too other than just...
ro.product.model=SM-G935F
I also changed ro.product.device and ro.build.product to herolte
and ro.product.name to heroltexx and ro.build.flavor to heroltexx-user
(herolte is the s7 edgenickname )
does anyone know what actually detects the USB/GearVR docking ? ..
did read somewhere but i now cannot find it to try expand/research on it! (ive read LOTS so may just got wrong end of stick ? !!)
that theres a main system files, needed for drivers which is inbuilt into ROM normally... keymapper file ???
ive searched the custom Rom threads, and all the 'fix' files are full of are the gear VR service files etc ..
any suggestion, tests, or help would be great !!!
Just bumping this.
This must be some sort of ROM-Thing.
I don't really think that there is a hardware-limitation. We seem to miss something

No Firefox in Dex Station mode?

Seems Firefox (my preferred browser) does not work in the DeX Station. Pretty weird since it specifically has a tablet mode and works pretty much identical to the desktop version on my Note Pro 12.2.
Anyone know of a workaround?

There are a lot of apk's that can extend to full screen any phone apk. Even in samsung own menu there is developer options under dex setting that alow any apk to run in full screen.
I guess that' your question about...
Search in.play store for dex

No such luck. The setting is Samsung DeX Labs, "Attempt to resize apps that aren't officially supported by Samsung DeX." and Firefox still says it wasn't designed for it.
"Firefox can't run in Samsung Dex. It is designed for phone touch screens." is the text that appears. I personally think they blacklisted it so that people would be forced to use their browser.
Though Chrome does seem to work.
i have the same issue .... dont know whats going on

Enable Developer Mode and it allows all applications automatically.
Go to settings -> Samsung Dex -> About Samsung Dex
Click the Samsung Dex logo 5 times. Launch Firefox!
Enabling "Developer mode" did not work for me--Firefox doesn'e even start. Any other ideas?
TIA,

Going into the Developer mode worked for me. It didn't immediately, I had to take my Note 8 off the dock and put it back on. I wasn't even looking for it to work because I had tried without undocking it . After I redocked my note 8. I had a full screen baby !!!!!!!!!!. Thank You to the fella that suggested that. Hopefully we can work together and get some consensus going on what works for these issues. This Dex has a lot of potential and I want to take full advantage of it.

Solution works for Firefox Nightly on the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 9 also. Simply restart DeX by disconnecting it from and then reconnecting it to the external monitor for the dev mode change to take hold. Thanks!
Thank you the for information.
I now have FireFox Beta 68.167 running on my Samsung Galaxy Note 8, on the DeX station.
I followed the instructions in the previous posts above then took the phone off the Dex station, on replacing the phone on the Dex station I started up FireFox!
I will post further if there are any issues.

Try rebooting instead.
Same issue, can't open Firefox on DeX - strange though because I did have it working for a while. Now, can't get it to work despite developer mode, reconnecting HDMI, rebooting etc etc many times. Also tried complete factory reset before reinstalling FF & retrying.
Confirming that today, DEX on S9+ with Android 10/Windows 10, Firefox works.
Going into dev mode and activating Dex labs, unplug and replug. Trick is done.
How does Firefox browser work for you? I am running DeX on my Galaxy S10 and Firefox is basically unusable in full screen, as for some reason most websites are shown extremely zoomed in and I can't find a way how to zoom out. As en example, I open google webpage and the search bar spans across the whole width of my TV.
This could be an issue with Firefox not being optimized for use in Dex Mode
Turning on the Dex dev mode worked on my Note9. I restarted Dex and open the latest stable version without issues. Thanks for the tip!!

Doesn't seem to work anymore. Can you guys check/verify/confirm?
I'm on Samsung Note 9 with newest OS version.
Any ideas how to solve this?
UPDATE: To be precise about my status:
* DeX Labs is active, and I can't even deactivate it via Android Developer Mode.
* App Size Adjustment and "Reopen last opened app automatically" settings are active.

Sry guys, all good. I just misinterpreted the post about "Firefox Nightly".
Solution: Firefox Nightly is currently not just about incremental improvements, but it is a whole new browser. Firefox Beta is also working on DeX - thus Firefox "Production Version" will be supporting DeX quite soon, definitely this year.

Any way to use desktop mode without the dock?

So Im in need of a fully functional desktop mode becase I have some apps that are apk but arent made for small screen (adobe connect etc.) so i need to use the desktop mode on my pc
Is it possible?
Does asus offer a mode similar to samsung dex??!
theoretically, there was a barebone desktop mode added in stock android 10, but so far it seems that asus removed it : /. Maybe with OEM Asus dock it would work, but I don't have such one on hand. (Got one from baseus with 3xUSB3.0, USB C with PD, RJ-45 and a HDMI, works like a charm, just cant make the desktop mode work. Streaming screen thru HDMI works nicely tho)

FYI I don't have this phone so your mileage may vary.
You can try "scrcpy" and make DIY desktop mode. It is open source screen mirroring app for windows, linux and mac and is almost lag free even over wifi. It only needs adb, without any client app on the phone. It will basically mirror your phone's screen to pc and enable you to use your pc's mouse and keyboard as phone's one. In dev options on your phone you need to enable usb debugging. You proppably would also like to change DPI. If you have root you can also try this app which has a lot more options than just changing dpi https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farmerbb.secondscreen.free
