Worth buying for 250€/300$ - Nokia 8 Questions & Answers

Hi.
I've got an offer to buy a 1 month old Nokia 8 for 250 euro/300 dollars.
I've been looking at the Nokia 7 plus which is about 390 euro/460 dollar in my country.
I've got a Iphone 7 as it is, but i really wanna go back to Android now that i finally have the option and my all time favorite phone is Nexus 1, so i want so close to stock android as possible.
The biggest fear i've got is the camera. I don't want anything worse then i got today. Would you say it's worse/same/better?
Which one would you buy if you had the chance?
Thanks in advance!

Look at the specs. You will see the Nokia 8 much better than 7th.
NOKIA 8 is one of the most underrated telefon, SD 835 and 250 € it's a great deal.

It's the software that is crap. With Google Camera apk you get fabulous pictures.

You can replace it with Google camera app and you get premium feeling.

Depends on what you want the phone for... For me I like to try new new new, Android never my main phone, just a playground, I want to try AOSP, I like to try latest Android... My main phone is iPhone.
At the moment Nokia is not keeping up to their promise, they're busy with launching more models and Nokia 8 is not getting their May Security Patch yet, and it's not Project Treble... Camera also has no Pro Manual mode yet.
So if you want a long lasting software patching phone I suppose any of their new Android One is better...
2 days ago I was so tempted to sell off my 6 months old Nokia 8 to replace with Mi Mix 2s because of Android P beta preview. Even my Mi 5 running LineAge OS has May Security Patch!
Updated: just tried out Google camera (as others suggested) on Nokia 8, it crash my phone when I turn on Motion option, and HDR set to High quality isn't great, mainly just over exposed compared to Medium (Default).

Premium feel is when the camera works fluently without mods. Even with mods the camera is mediocre and can't compete with any flagships past few years.

You're either a hater or you haven't held a Nokia 8 in your hands that uses Google Camera.
The results I get with this thing are better than most of the recent flagships and almost matches the images you can get on a Pixel 2.
Pls refrain from posting bull$h!t and confusing the OP. Thx.

I'm neither of what you accuse. I'm just not giving false hope for OP coming from iPhone 7 that Nokia 8 camera is on par with competition.
https://www.dxomark.com/nokia-8-review-nokias-return-high-end-segment/
You can get a little better results with mods of course, but it won't fix the limitations of that Sony sensor. It's still slow and mediocre in low light / indoors.

The difference is day and night. It's not "a little better". Low light as well - drastically different than the default camera app processing.
Pls end your nonsense. It's HMD's fault that they screwed up the camera app. But this is a huge and significant mod that breathes new life into this phone's camera capabilities.

The camera really is bad , i have the nokia 8 and i agree
But also agree that with google camera it works a thousand times better and it has no problem matching the quality of the photos of iphone 7
Regarding to everything else , nokia 8 is better in everything , snapdragon 835 is just fabulous , ram management is also good
Batttery life , power and everything else is close to the iphone 7 , if you want to go back to android , sell iph7 , win big money and buy nokia 8 , is the best choice

Installing another manufacturer's algorithms won't fix the slow shutter speed and low light capabilities of the 1.12 um sensor.
Every android phone that i've tried has some pluses and minuses in google camera app mods. Usually low light images are better but that's it, then you might experience glare in day shots or something else.. oh and you lose all the gimmicks that the oem has put on its software/hardware (nokia 8 dual lens for example and ozo sound in video).
So it's a hit or miss.. Especially when there are no apks that are optimized for nokia 8.
And believe me, i would love to be wrong in this, but in this current state the camera is mediocre.. with or without mods. I hope nokia would use that second lens to improve low light..

Agree, I spend more money (on non Chinese brands) because of Nokia's quality, it's losing the purpose of pay a premium for Zeiss Lens and not able to benefit the Dual or PIP features in the stock app. The lens (and it's features) and USB 3 was the only reason Nokia worth the premium for, else it is just a Mi 6.

Thing is, the need for unlocking of bootloader needs to be pushed to the OEM. Something like filing a petition or something. So that we can show the responsible person..

Very low camerda quality

Hi guys
the camera quality of this phone is terrible, the image are always affected by blurry effects and low details and much noise.
Is it normal ?
There's a FIX for this ?

When I had my Lg p990 I was also trying to investigate the reason of the bad camera quality.
Then I read somewhere: Better have a goo quality camera with lesser MP then have a ****ty quality camera with higher MP.
My Nokia N95 8GB with 5 MP took better photos vs LG o2x P990 8 MP.
Another deal-breaker, I was actually thinking in buying p880.....
Thank you for saving me
We're relying on LG to fix this one.
By the sound of things it's a good camera that has been badly configured.
Ksekhar has done all that he can here, but the frustration got the better of him and he's abandoned the device.
Can't say I blame him.
Can't a third party camera app fix this?
I think that only changing lenses

..yes. It doesn't have overly advertised and expensive bloatware on it that drains the battery in a day no matter what you do. Never mind force you to use some proprietary solution to transfer any files onto it, while making it impossible to use external storage media
The camera default settings just aren't calibrated very well. If you turn down the exposure time so the "correction" algorithms don't try to mesh two completely different pictures, it's no worse or better than any other camera with a plastic lens.
Seriously, though -- how much do you guys think the camera modules in these phones actually cost?
It's not just bad calibration - its bad hardware. I attached sample shots of my old galaxy s2 and the lg optimus 4x hd.
As you can see, the galaxy s2 image is MUCH sharper and clearer - especially at the edges and the color reproduction is far better as well. That's not just bad calibration ...

But pretty sure the iso speed is the same on all those pictures.. If you try with the other presets, some custom fiddling, or just use the snap-function while filming -- you won't get the same blur in the picture.
So.. conclusion: the profiles probably would have worked perfectly fine on a super-steady hand, a tripod, and perhaps also in a world where light travels at the speed of sound or so.
(btw, not making the point that the camera is awesome. Just saying that you're not going to take very good pictures with a camera like this no matter what. It is, however, possible to take reasonably good mobile phone pictures - on this camera, just like any other mobile phone camera.)

@UIQrules: Actually I leant onto something when I took those picture - and I took 20 or so on the LG and chose the best. There is no way you can get the same results like with the Galaxy S2. There is better hardware in use with the Samsung phone. It has nothing to do with software configuration.
Acutally I think the Galaxy S2 pictures are pretty awesome - even by a compact camera point of view. The LG is fine for me, because I don't need the camera very often, but I can see why someone would change for another phone, because of all those high-end smartphones out there, the Optimus 4X probably takes the worst pictures.
*nods* agree with that.
But yeah, noticed the same thing. As steady as possible, and still getting the weird blur, even at close range and perfect lighting. Then I took a few "speed" shots, at the same resolution, and it went away. So I don't know what it is, but I suspect it has something to do with the way the picture buffers are used. Amazing that it would go through qa, of course, no doubt about that. It is, like you say, something you notice right away.

Nexus 5 faulty camera software, fix on the way? (According to The Verge)

I have to say that after battery life (I knew from the moment the specs leaked, that 2300 mah wouldn't be enough) that the camera quality has been my biggest dissapointment, the phone has a HARD time focusing, the picture quality it's mediocre/sometimes decent and it really doesn't make sense since google is making a big deal out of the camera.
Check out the tag line for the nexus 5 on the play store: "Nexus 5 helps you capture the everyday and the epic in fresh new ways. It's the slimmest and fastest Nexus phone ever made, powered by Android 4.4, KitKat."
If you go the official nexus 5 website you will find lots of info about how good the camera is : http://www.google.com/nexus/5/
or the commercial ... it's all about the camera
Anyway, according to Joshua Topolsky, The Verge's Chief Editor, there's hope and we will get an update trying to fix what's broken, do you guys think it will really make a difference? Or is this camera simply a poor camera? Here's the quote:
"Representatives from the Android team say that software is to blame for the weak performance, not hardware, and reps tell me that a fix is coming to deal with the issues in the upcoming weeks. I've even seen an early build of the new software, and while it's only a minor improvement — autofocus is a hair faster, but still inconsistent, and picture quality hasn't changed — it's nice to see Google already at work.
Of course, there's no set date for a fix at this point, and I don't know how much the camera can actually be improved through software, but if the Moto X is any kind of example, there might just be a solution to this very disheartening problem."

That's just not true, and you are very biased, it seems. Like others have said, there is significant lag in the camera focus and my Nexus 5 can take much much better photos than my Nexus S, but not any faster. And that is not okay.
I get the impression that all the effort on the software side so far has gone into HDR+
My experience playing around with it is that HDR+ not only improves detail in bright/dark areas, but it also results in sharper images overall. (This is contrary to what I have found with other HDR implementations which have resulted in blurrier images). Of course sometimes you don't want to use HDR (Maybe you want to photograph a figure silhouetted against the sunset for example).
Whilst I didn't buy the N5 as a replacement for an SLR, hopefully the non-HDR mode can be improved. After all, the best camera is the one you have with you.
(I also agree regarding the camera focus. At the very least, an option to pre-focus would make a huge difference!)
Shutter is slow... but it takes decent shots
It's no secret that Google needs to work on their camera software.

The same here, very surprised by picture quality in low light using HDR+ (for landscape mainly)... I mean im sure there are better cameras but for a phone im impressed
But i've a weird problem don't know if software or hardware but the camera app stay black screen when opened from the lock screen. it happened many times, i had to put my pin code kill the app and launch again to get the camera app working again.

Since you have those items, why don't you compare the camera shutter lag to those other phones?
You can always say that for you it's not a problem - and that might very well be as you say, but you'll never be able to deny that there might be people that want to capture "that moment" and with that lag it's just infeasible.
If your camera does not have any worse lag than say the iPhone 5s, please make a video so we can see for ourselves.

Look this thread is about issues with the Nexus 5's camera. What good are you doing when you tell people "It's not that bad guys! You just have to anticipate the 1-2 seconds lag, I learned it too!"
It's just ignorant to tell people there is no issue with the camera at all, because you yourself can work around the lag issue. You do see that this might annoy people, especially normal users?

Replace my iPhone 7 with this...?

Hi guys, I'm an owner of an iPhone 7 (second hand, but perfect) and a few months ago I had a Xperia X Compact (that I loved). I use both systems (iOS and Android) but I was thinking to come back to the little green robot. Do you think I'll lose so much in terms of video and pictures ? For the others specs I think it's a great phone, but I still have some doubts for the camera performances...

The video camera is top notch and no sign of any distortion, aparently enabling steady shotseems to correct the image.
I think the problems with the stills camera are overblown, I've been taking lots of pictures since I received the phone and it's hardly noticable.
Given that it's an algorithum that fixes it, I am sure it's only a matter of time before Sony release a fix.
There are so many things that the phone does right. This is such a step forward fromm the X compact.

Video quality is very good, better than the photo quality. The main ACTUAL problem with the camera is no OIS, so pictures can come out soft, especially in low light.
This may not compare well to your Iphone7 in many ways, but Android is a different animal, altogether. camera is not on par with Iphone7, but unless you are one of these camera snobs it isn't going to bother you much. Also, Android O has some bugs to be worked out, but nothing serious.

colors do come out a bit red-ish in low light sometimes. you won't really notice the distortion unless taking a picture of a brick wall, checkerboard or something of the like.
if you liked the X compact that much, you will likely appreciate the XZ1 compact to a great degree. the camera is (arguably) the worst feature on the phone, and i still think it's a great camera. keeping in mind that it's not an s8 or iphone8, you'll have very little issues with XZ1C.
I bought a XZ1C for these reasons, (It will arrive this week)
1. Form factor - this phone is quite a bit smaller than the iPhone 7, and the 7 is already considered small. It is a tad bit bigger than the iPhone 5 (which had the best in hand feeling to me)
2. Battery life - Champion. I need a phone that will lasts all day and i've read nothign but amazing things
3. Android 8.0 - No other device than the Pixel 2 series has this update yet. Thats cool.
4. Camera Capabilities - It can do so much, including the 3D AR thing. Pretty fun, even if it isnt the best!
5. Headphone Jack - There is one, albeit the quality and loudness not the best, but it exists.
6. Memory card slot - Self explanatory.
FWIW, Sony have revealed that they have made a camera feature to fix or minimize the distortion on stills.
Refer to https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74266872&postcount=60 that post to see. If the camera was your only hesitation for the xz1c, this should alleviate a lot of that.
You can refer to Amazon and sell it off Đánh giá iPhone 7: Sức hút đến từ đâu?

The point and shoot is second to none.
The pro and night modes are both second to none..
Telephoto lens is superb
Only thing is say ia better is HDR on the pixel.
Besides that the p20 Pro stands alone. Even against late 2018 phones.
Unbeatable point & shoot camera performance. Never seen a camera fair that well on phone before.
Pixel 3 camera is very good but not as refined or versatile as the Huawei system.
If you don't know how to tame it, you will not like it. But if you can tame it and know the capabilities and limitations of the sensor, you will love it!
I'm having a blast with it, because i know how it works inside out and now i can push it to it's limits.

I love it
The thing I don't like is that I often get blurry images if I point and shoot
Hello,

You got your hands on Pixel 3 already? Weird I thought they're not supposed to deliver until sometime later.
Not at all, There is a entire thread showing the amazing photos this phone can deliver, this phone camera is versatile, it has the best nightmode out there, the best zoom, and the main 40mp sensor can capture a lot of detail, Last night i manage to take a photo of a lighting (https://i.imgur.com/32TxPqG.jpg).

Yea, i love the P20 pro camera and night mode is freaking awesome! Only negative things i can think off is no stabilization on 4k video and the selfie cam could be a bit better but besides these 2 i think this camera is pretty much the best you can get right now for a cheap price.
for me it doesn't matter what i read or what other peoples say.
The camera of this phone is insane. Especially the night mode. Never saw something like this. Night shots looks brighter than with the human eye?
The only thing i don't like is the post processing of the camera app (oversharpening)
P20 Pro camera is neither bad, nor cheap, but both of those are highly subjective opinions. And you know what they say about opinions....
I am enjoying mine very much.

The front/selfie camera is what most people are complaining about, esp. the color saturation. It gives a plasticy color to human skin.
The main camera is superb.
The camera is really bad on this phone.
Pictures are so over processed and lake dynamic range.
In 10mpx it's inusable and in 40mpx il't noisy. Video recording is also bad.
This phone is just horrible. My olds S8+ and Xiaomi Mi9t are much better except for zooming and low light. S9+ destroys completely the p20 pro.
I really regret my purchase.

I cannot second that. The only thing i can complain about is video recording.
Main shooter is more than capable to take great pics. It's incomparably better than op 7t.
The camera quality on this phone is really good. Anyone who says it's crap is objectively wrong.
The camera quality in the p20 pro still today better than many flagship, more than one year later, I compare the camera with the recents iPhone 11 pro max, pixel 4, mate 30 pro, samsung note 10, and it's nothing to envy of them, the kirin 970 is slower in games, but is smooth and very fast still
what is the best siting of camera ? in 10 m pixel or 40m pixel ?
Depend on the situation, with good daylight 40, 10 if you don't want big pictures files, for zoom, night and difficult light conditions better 10, normally I use 10, because Huawei optimized the software and the cams to work together in this setup, working main, telephoto and monochrome camera sensor together for improvement results

Question How is performance and camera after updates?

Hello,
All initial reviews show some spontaneous performance lags and a rather not so satisfying camera. As the phone is now on January 2022 update, have things become better?
Thank you

hi, what performance lag are you referring to? what is wrong with the camera? in comparison to my friends samsung S20FE mine looks a LOT better and has a load more detail. it is a 64 MP camera and it is pretty good imo vs the phones I've had this is by far the best. when it comes to performance lag, I'm not sure what you are referring to? is there a game too demanding for the phone? I can run some PS2 games on my phone like DBZ budokai 3, tenkaichi 3, Kingdom hears 2, Digimon rumble arena, digimon Data Squad, Simpsons hit and run and a few others at pretty much 60 fps with a minor dip here and there. Genshin runs better on higher graphics settings since the GPU picks up where the CPU is a little lacking but yeah Genshin is the only game I've found that has some stuttering on this phone so far. don't expect miracles for the price but at the price I paid for it there is nothing that even comes remotely close to it in South Africa
Hi, thanks for your input, I am referring to all reviews you can read about this phone.

yeah, I like the camera but I'm no expert photographer, I've only used the camera for personal use but I love the quality! if the reviews on google by actual users don't go searching for the guy like this one if the guy didn't buy a fake he is delusional.
"Most Worst phone ever. (Camera quality is very bad) Don't buy4 months ago
Most third class mobile. Check the camera before buy this phone. 2mp camera is better than this phone cam(64mp). All reviews will be 0. Realme is better phone from Redmi. Disappointed to buy it. Feedback after using 4months."
still after updates the camera quality is worse. photos remain patchy and washed out. my earlier note 7s pro was 100 times better then this. and yes a 2mp camera is even better then this. please dont buy this phone even in a 2ns sale.
