Found A Bug With YouTube HDR w/ Autobrightness? (Oreo April Patch) - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

So I was appreciating the beautiful display on the Note 8 and it's abilities again today by watching a HDR video from YouTube on it, but I noticed something weird. Whenever I went from a bright to a dark environment, (lit bedroom to dark living room) the screen would drop to a lower brightness, then realize it's in HDR mode and go all the way back up, and it would alternate multiple times as I moved around in the dark environment. It would drop to a low brightness, pick back up to full, drop, repeat. Can anyone else test to see if this is happening with theirs too?
Settings: WQHD+ resolution, Auto Brightness enabled, Video Enhancer enabled
Video:https://youtu.be/tO01J-M3g0U
This will help me confirm whether it is indeed a software bug introduced in Oreo/April Patch or if it's my own hardware that's having issues. Thanks for the help!

I would say it is a software bug.
This was happening to me after the Oreo update, unsure what I done that resolved it though but, after flashing a custom rom and going back to stock it has worked fine for me. Using the same Oreo package that I used to update to Oreo the first time also.

I am really sad to hear about all these bugs due to OREO updating, they make me think that it has far more cons than pros over nougat, in my country no Oreo ota yet, I will stay this way until a really good oreo comes out...

Lollipop Camera Bug

Hello all,
Today, like most on here, i awoke to find that Android Lollipop was being rolled-out and as such decided to download the ftf and flash it onto my device.
Everything seemed to work pretty well until i decided to take a photograph. It seems that the entire top/right-hand side of my images are over-exposed/super bright.
Is anyone else seeing issues like this?
P.s. i have tested using both the SE and HK firmwares and both are showing this issue, I have since reverted back to Kitkat and all is well camera-wise.
I am currently at work so will post images later.

Same. I think this is their "Improvement" to low light pictures.

If so, should it not encompass the entire image?
The affected 'area' is the same regardless of lighting conditions.
I originally thought there could be moisture in my camera, so I reverted to Kitkat to check.
I have also noticed some over-exposure, but related to light sources, as well camera losing its fluidness when in low light situations, just like it was on sports mode or something. When you move around it seems to be 20 fps or so. Absolutely fine in video mode, though. When there is more light I can confirm everything is normal. Moreover, when in low-light conditions, color reproduction is a little bit not accurate, it tends to shift towards yellow.
As promised, attached is a photograph taken of the ground in balanced lighting conditions i.e. no bright light sources or reflective surfaces nearby.
The side way 'L' shape of the disturbance seems to be continuous throughout images, which would usually suggest an issue with the actual camera, however the camera is fine on Kitkat.
**Edit**
I have also attached an image taken of a dark surface to highlight the issue.
i have shots with 4.4.4 and 5.0.2,
auto mode in lolipop sucks.

At lease you don't have 'ghosting' in your images
You issues seems to be with the actual camera issues (noise etc) sony left us with, as opposed to an actual bug.

Hello. I have the same issue with you as well after updated the software to Lollipop. Are you still on Kit Kat or Lollipop has solved the issue?

Will a custom rom fix my Mi 8 problems? Stock camera is a potato

Recently I got my Mi 8 running MIUI 10.0.0.3.0 (Stable). It is a global version with a locked bootloader right now.
I got a few problems:
1) Camera shutter sounds within whatsapp/instgram even in silent mode
2) No notifications in the topbar (I heard that the beta solved this), only if slide the notification bar down
3) Camera quality, oh gawd. It's really awful and like two steps down from my S7 Edge. Red colors are shown orange and the details are missing. This is ridiculous. Saw a few reports about this.
4) Sometimes even with silent mode on I hear the notification sound
Most imporant point is 3) that I want to get fixed. Will a custom rom fix my problems?
Also got any recommendation for a custom rom? I want it stable, maybe a few tweaks (like accu percentage) and I need magisk for google pay.
Try Havoc or Pixel3ROM and see if you like any of them.
Can you post camera samples? I"m curious to see what bad shots on the phone look like. Mine are excellent.

Some if not all of these can be fixed after an update. You should also attempt to mess with the camera AI, HDR, etc. to see if your results change. Usually custom roms make it uglier, but IDK about the Mi 8. GCam seems to be stealing the show, try that perhaps?

He may be talking about the pixelation issues, especially when using some app's camera feature, or in poor indoor lighting conditions. In the beginning I broke my head as to how it scored such a high DxOMark when I took shots in my place, which is not that great. Then took some outdoor shots, shots at a friend's place (with better lighting) and some shots in very low light at night and was stunned.
I also got the mi 8 since my S7 Edge is getting old and when playing with the camera on my office I noticed massive flickering (banding/white pulsing effect)s.
I know this is "normal" but I comparing with my old S7 Edge and some random colleagues iPhone 6 and the flickering was definitely much worse on the Mi 8.
I tried to change the band frequency in the settings but the improvements were minor.
Can this be a defect of my phone or does the Mi 8 camera just sucks on this?

Does Oreo or Pie bring significant performance changes from Nougat?

Basically, and I'll make this short so I don't ramble, if this is a side/wifi phone where all I need it for is gaming and music, does upgrading bring anything that people 'cant live without', or is staying with an older version that has had more time to be customized a better option? I'm on Pie right now, but it's one of those things I really can't tell without setting aside time to test/experiment and focus, which I haven't ;p

Compared to nougat, the custom rom status of Oreo and Pie is miles ahead and better.....yes, there are some bugs here and there but those are minors and won't hinder your day to day usage and not to mention that even some of those bugs are being fixed and will be ironed out in the next few months of update.....recently the camera issues has been rectified and by the next updates, the camera should work flawlessly without any crashes.....even GCAM is working perfectly on the rom.....try Pixel Experience if you want, updates normally come on a monthly basis and the latest camera build prop fix posted at Pg 60-62 fixes many camera crashes.....
The only bugs which are left are normally based on the rom and its sources and normally gets fixed in the next update
.
Yes,4k recording still now doesn't work in footej camera or in Gcam, but if you really need 4k recording, use the Filmic Pro camera, it will allow you to record at 4k with variable frame rates.
In terms of performance, there are some internal improvements but for day to day scenario it is more than enough, in short you\ll be able to play PUBG at low/medium settings at 30 fps ......
What we really need is a kernel developer who can make some good custom kernels which will help in performance improvements and increase overall stability and feature array across the board....
So, in short the custom rom status is better than ever for le 2, right now ..... and this is coming from a guy who was there from the beginning when CodeWorkz was developing the nougat rom for the device....
Well then, I guess Ill stick with Pie :0 Guess Im just used to windows, to where when 10 came out, you were able to upgrade for free from 7, and dx12 was supposedly ready to be supported, so i figured, get the new directx, get to make my OS legal, why not?
Hardly any games use dx12 still to this day. Compatibility with games and such was funky, especially with scaling. Audio software like Audacity had, and still has, bugs which arent there for win7. Hardware certificates had issues for quite a while (esp Asus hardware) so i couldnt us3 my network card.
Ive prolly gone back and forth like 4 times, until i decided to just stick with 10. So i figured there might be similar issues with a phone that wasnt planned to be updated with a new os to run better with an older version.
Hope that made sense ha

Lots of issues after updated to Android 9 Pie (Mi A2)

After my Mi A2 was updated from Android 8 O to Android 9 P, I have to face lots of bugs and some serious issues. Although I already tried factory resetting, it doesn’t help. Many A2 users also face these issues.
1. Portrait Mode – Unable to focus on any other subjects, except a subject in the middle of the frame. That means whenever you touch on the screen to focus, focusing does not work for you at all. This is one of most serious issues for users who love photography.
2. Fingerprint Scan – Significantly slower scanning speed. Very annoying.
3. Screen Brightness Dropping – When I was on Android 8 O, I always adjusted the brightness scale to 30-40% and it’s bright enough. But now, for Android 9 P, I have to slide the scale to 70-80% so I can see the screen clearly. (Adaptive Brightness already turned off)
+++ There's an explanation that this screen brightness change is not a bug. Find out more here: https://forums.androidcentral.com/g...ubt-about-display-brightness-android-pie.html
Thanks @Varun.Shanbhag for the information. +++
4. Heating Issue – I’ve noticed that while charging the phone, when it was on Android 8 O, the temperature never got more than 39°C, but now, on Android 9 P, it sometimes gets to 41°C. (Refer to the app ‘Ampere’)
Moreover, when using camera, it gets hot too quickly.
However, I am not sure if there’s only me facing this overheating issue.
It is likely to be caused by CPU freq. issue stated in the following thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2/help/little-cpu-stucks-1401-mhz-min-freq-t3851184
5. Touch Screen – Touch screen seems to be less responsive than before. I can notice its latency. Sometimes I have to double tap the screen to get something done, because the first tap does not respond. (It can be easily noticed this issue with back button)
6. Lower Audio Volume – Some users say that they're facing lower audio volume issue when using earphones or headphones.
7. Face ID - Face ID doesn't work stably, it sometimes works and sometimes does not.
8. Front Flash Issue - front flash doesn't work when I turn it on in camera app. (But it works when set it as 'Auto')
9. Black Banding on Camera Screen - There're black bandings appear on the screen while using camera app, they look like signal noise appears on TV.
10. Camera App Crashes - Camera sometimes crashes, for example, the camera app says "Camera Error - Can't connect to camera" when I switch the camera from back to front in Portrait Mode.
11. Whole system seems to be less stable than it was in Android Oreo.
[List last updated: Jan 3, 2019]

I hope all issues will be fixed in the next update.

I'm not sure about beep and screen randomly wake up, but the laggy LED pulse happens to me, that makes me annoyed sometimes ?
I also found that the LED issue has appeared since Android 8 O.
yeah the laggy led looks so cheap and retro like it was used in the last century ???
Hey guys, i just updated to pie December update, and the wifi tethering band locked to 2,4Ghz, any way to enable the 5ghz?
Really considering flashing the custom Pixel Experience ROM. Having a lot of bugs on Pie. Did the factory reset. None of them gone.
Any suggestions ? Should I just go for Custom. Or should I wait for next update ?

About the heating problem probably your cpu stacks at 1401 mhz when charging. Check it with cpu spy. This was happened to me with pie.

Oreo is ok, i have downgrade my phone after some hours using pie. Pie for me it is in early beta.
How can we report about this ?
Gps problems
I'm also having issue with lags. Fingerprint scanner is lagging from time to time.. Overall daily task from switching apps to bring back to home screen also lags.
Disabling adaptive brightness seems to help improve the lag so far...

I just got my Global A2, 4/64 two days ago. Updated to Pie and have Dec Patch.
1) Portrait works fine. I can focus on any part of the scene and that subject will be in focus. Works quickly and reliably.
2) Fingerprint scan is quick with zero issues holding my finger at any angle. No lag whatsoever.
3) I went straight to Pie, so had zero experience with Oreo on the A2, but screen brightness behaves similar to the Moto G5+ that I had before. Adaptive brightness also behaves the same.
4) I never checked the phone with Oreo, but when charging on Pie, the phone feels cool to the touch. Cooler than my Moto G5+. BTW, I am using the OEM Moto QC 3.0 charger with the A2.
5) Touch screen is as responsive as my Moto G5+ and my Wife's Moto G6.
6 and 7) I don't use headphones or Face ID.

Hello

Question What to know before installing LineageOS

Hello!
The LineageOS thread is getting very long at 12 pages now, I am looking to install it, but since this thread is so long, it is hard to track what is fixed and what is an issue. So please, if some of you with Lineage could reply with some of the current issues it would be very helpful for me and other people.
I will try my best to add them to a list below for other people looking to install Lineage This is what I have gathered so far.
No vibrations after screen/SIM unlock
Fingerprint scanner only works with screen on
Fingerprint scanner flashes the entire display at max brightness
Night light does not work
(Maybe) No data roaming
(Maybe) Bluetooth APTX codec does not work for calls
(Not a bug) Screen refresh rate can only be changed with adb
Quick update: I installed Lineage anyway lol. For me all haptic feedback works, so I barrwd it from the list. Some I could not test. Overall Lineage is sooo much smoother than the stock ROM, Asus removed so many little animations. Also I noticed the sometimes, screen kind of shifts colors rapidly, maybe this is related to auto brightness...
Edit2: its not the auto brightness so my next hypothesis is the refresh rate going to 60 and back to 120 when I touch the screen
Edit3: it seems to be switching between 120/60 to 90 for some reason? I tried manually switching refresh rates with adb and saw a very small difference between 60/120, but with 90Hz, the colors are all over the place, same happened on the stock rom too.
