Can I install Plex on to rooted chromecast? - Google Chromecast

I have an old chromecast that I rooted a while back, and I would like to install plex onto it permanently because I want to use it on a network that doesn't have internet access. Can this be done? If so, how? I would only use this chromecast for plex and nothing else, ever. Thank you very much.

You cant make it work as Chromecast need to access Google Cloud Services to work, even its a local casting. This is the BIG DIFFERENT and most of the time become a problem/stopper for Google to work at Mainland China and Russia as Most Google Services are blocked on Internet on a national basis.
For local casting which does not need any Internet Cloud Services, you can use Airplay or DLNA devices such as Anycast or Ezcast toggle.

Wow, those went fast. I wouldn't fret - I'm sure they will have stock soon, and they're saying to go ahead and order and they'll ship when available - in other words, first come first serve. I'd get in line for that free shipping if I didn't have mine ordered!

Still trying to figure out if I want one. I know its only $35, but I have drawers full of $35 gadgets rotting away. I already have an Apple TV and a Roku 3 and a WD Live and a HTPC. All of which do everything this does and more. The streaming from the phone or tablet thing is goofy....your content is not on your phone (unless you are a 14 year old or something), its on a server somewhere (either netflix's or Amazon's or your own). Add in the lack of Ethernet (wireless sucks for streaming HD content...you are always at the mercy of your neighbors) and I think its a $35 drawer-space-taker-upper.
Someday I will be in Best Buy or something and my retard gene will kick in and I will buy one, play with it for a week, then into the drawer it goes, lol.
too bad its out of stock :<

In this article: http://www.inquisitr.com/868923/chromecast-tv-35-google-dongle-is-cheap-but-how-well-does-it-work/ it says this:
Essentially the Chromecast TV dongle will offer users the ability to stream Internet video and content onto their television screen. Simply plug the dongle into the HDMI port of a TV then connect it to the WiFi network at home. You can then watch movies or listen to music stored on your smartphone, tablet or PC, and watch or listen to it on the big screen.

Sorry if it wasn't what you were looking for, but how did you expect it to connect without Wi-fi? The nice thing is that your phone is free to be used as normal while streaming.

This isn't an application - it's a piece of hardware Google released yesterday to allow streaming to any HDTV (smart or not). See videos in the OP.

Thanks for mentioning that - didn't hear anything about that, for some reason. I'll upload it in a few when I get a chance :good:

I picked one up at Best Buy yesterday and tried what you are asking. It will not work that way. You can setup and adhock network on your phone, connect the Chromecast and a 3rd device to stream to the Chromecast. I couldn't stream from the device providing the network.

So you could use a phone for the ad hoc network and connect a tablet and the chromecast and then stream from the tablet to the TV?

Exactly. I used my S4 to setup the network, connected chromecast and my wife's Note 2 and streamed to the chromecast via her Note 2.
I really haven't played with it too much; just watched a couple of youtube videos but that did work.
Joe T, can you play local content like
- local stored movies
- local stored musik
- local stored pictures?
Cloud stuff is quite good but not everything is synced with google at my side, just my music..

From what I gather... no unfortunately. Google Music should work, YouTube definitely works but those are the only two things I was able to stream.
I tried to stream a TV Portal (android app) show to it and there was no "Chromecast" option on mx player or my S4's stock player. I've only spent about an hour messing around with it though.
I actually looked into it this morning in hopes there was something I was missing, I wanted to stream my own content to it and came across this G+ post. It doesn't look like you can stream whatever you want to it.
Also, if you look on the chromecast developer site it states
"You may not publicly distribute or ship your Google Cast application without written permission from Google, per the terms of service described below."
and
"YOU MAY NOT PUBLICLY DISTRIBUTE CODE CONTAINING THIS SDK OR REFERENCING THESE APIs WITHOUT A WRITTEN AGREEMENT WITH GOOGLE ALLOWING YOU TO DO SO."
I hope google doesn't lock this down so only certain services can be used.
EDIT:
I was wrong. You can play local files through the Chrome Browser

Any idea if it has DLNA support?? Say to support something like Plex??

BBC iPlayer issues outside UK

Hi guys, I am yet to fully enjoy iPlayer on Chromecast. I use Unlocator as my DNS provider and they managed to work out the way to watch iPlayer stuff outside of UK. But the streaming speeds are really bad and so far I didn't enjoy a single show. It seems like it buffers every 10 seconds or so so I am suspecting Unlocator (and their method to unblock it) at this stage. PC, Android, iPad all seems to work fine without any buffering and in full HD.
I would really like to hear some of your experiences but also ideas or feedback about other DNS providers. I also have HMA VPN subscription that I haven't tested yet because that is my absolute last option.
The behavior you describe sound like network latency.
If you can force a specific rate or resolution that can help.
Also make sure Chromecast has a stable WiFi connection.
Could be the provider. Try unblock-us for a week trial.
Also, have you set the chromecast up to block access to the google dns servers?

Do Unblock-US support Chromecast? I used them some time ago, before I moved to Unlocator. I might give it a go.

It's not about supporting Chromecast, it's about having the dns address on your router and then blocking the Chromecast from accessing the Google dns address which it defaults to. You need to do that in static route.
But yeah, I use unblock us, works very well. It has an easy Netflix region switcher without having to change addresses so you can use any Netflix. (Not sure if yourd offers that too?)

The problem with iPlayer on Chromecast is because BBC implemented an extra step to look up geo location. Are you outside UK? Is iPlayer working for you?
I use Eureka ROM so DNS change for me is trivial.

Ah right, fair enough.
I'm in Southern Ireland and just tested the app and website, both stream fine.
Just to make sure, you don't need to refresh your ip address on the unlocator site? With unblockus, if you reboot your router (with a dynamic ip) you need to refresh your ip address on the site by clicking a link that pops up.

Thanks, I'll test Unblock tonight. I hope the issue is not network latency, I have no issues streaming Netflix in full HD.

BBC iplayer on chromecast outside UK

Folks,
I know there are threads out on XDA for this. But i need some workarounds or help.
I have BBC Iplayer working fine on my mobile using Hola outside UK. But problem arises when i cast the content to my chromecast. The content is not displayed although i get the BBC iplayer logo on my TV screen.
Can anyone help ?? I have a router which does not support iptables changes as suggested on some of the threads here on XDA !
Thanks in advance !
Your router probably doesn't support a VPN either then, so you would need a DNS unblocking service with support for the BBC iPlayer, something like Unlocator or one of its many competitors. The Chromecast doesn't let you change the DNS manually, so you'll need to follow the directions provided by the DNS service for how to get the right DNS addresses from your router to the Chromecast. And you'll also need to block the Google DNS addresses in your router using the static route method in order to force the Chromecast to use the DNS addresses you provide.
If you can't be bothered to do all that, there are a couple of other alternatives:
You could just use tab-casting and put up with the slightly jerky video quality that usually produces on the Chromecast.
Or you could use an app like PlayOn or Plex to relay the BBC video stream from your computer to the Chromecast, but you'd still need a VPN or DNS service other than Hola on your computer since Hola is only a browser extension. BTW, be aware that using Hola is a privacy concern because they monitor your viewing habits and sell that information commercially. There are competitors like Zenmate and Proxmate who do not do that.

I have a better optio...cast the screen...but was hoping to find something. efficient...thanks...
Buy a new chromecast and root it before it connects to the internet, then just change the DNS on the chromecast.

Cast movies/TV shows from iPhone?

I searched and didn't find anything, so I'm asking now
Can I cast movies/TV shows I've synced to my iPhone 6 to my Chromecast? Or should I just buy the Apple TV?
I'm sure it can be done with the correct app. Although I get the Chromecast connection with OPlayer lite (videos in mp4 as per their directions), it doesn't cast. Rocket cast (? name) won't let me access my PC or RavPower streaming device without an upgrade. It does show the two macs in the house, but I didn't try to access them. Hopefully someone who has done this will tell us which app. I have Android devices which work perfectly with all my local and web streaming, but half of the family is Apple so I'd like to know (I'm the tekky).
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
The best way to do this is through an android device as a proxy, i.e., use AirPlay to send stuff from iOS to the android proxy, which then converts and sends to chromecast. The proxy does not display anything, just as hidden bridge.
OK. I was approaching this from DRM free videos which I'd already set up as mp4's, but I think you are talking iTunes' purchases for which Apple TV is the easy solution due to the Apple infrastructure. I think the Android proxy server idea may break you out of the Apple stronghold. I just want an app that will let me discover local then cast local (not local to the device but to the Wi-Fi environment) videos--if that's possible.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
For casting local videos from iOS to Chromecast, it should be very easy, I am surprised that you couldn't find an app on that.
The approach I am talking about is more of generic one, basically AirPlay to chromecast, we are developing such an app. It is AirPlay receiver , in the meantime also a proxy to chromecast

Chromecast with Google TV ad blocking

I'm trying to figure outdifferent approaches and I kind of run into a wall here.
I don't just want to block youtube ads, I want to block all ads within the Chromecast. I'm somewhat tech savvy but not advanced with routing. So far I've side loaded adguard onto the Chromecast and installed it successfully. However, I've not found a way to install the certificate for https. I've been looking into ways to do that but I'm not sure it's possible.
I bought a raspberry pi to try to figure out how to do adguard and managed to install it but then somehow I couldn't log back in so that's another mess I'm trying to figure out.
Thirdly I've already screwed up my router so I might as well try to figure out how to install open wrt.
Can anybody give me some advice about which way to go and what's the best method? Or am I missing something? Like rooting the Chromecast? I've always rooted my phone's I mean it will that make a difference?
There is currently no root for Chromecast with Google TV.
You should be able to block ads via PiHole but you'll probably run into problems and need to whitelist some links depending on what apps you use.
There's also apps like this that you could use or VPNs with ad-blocking built-in. Though, apps like Amazon Prime, Hulu, and some others can tell if you're using a VPN on it sometimes. I've also never been able to really block ads on those on Google TV.
I have a paid VPN with adblocking but what I mostly do is use apps like SmartTubeNext (SmartYouTube predecessor now that it's defunct) and then I'll use Lucky Patcher to patch out ads on any really ad-heavy apks. However, this can't be done for apks like Hulu, Amazon Prime (free w/ ads section), etc.
I've used Blokada to try to block ads, without luck. I've tried blocking almost everything google, I only ended up having Google TV think it's offline, and would not provide access to the applications list.
I have a raspberry pi with AdGuardHome and it works on apps, but not on YouTube since they're served from the same domain.
Casting from phone to TV will show up ads no matter what. So the best alternative is to use smarttubenext, which is great and updated frequently.
I wouldn't root it even if it was possible though, you may break your widevine level.
If you have any doubt regarding AdGuardHome you can send me a pm or telegram
I sideloaded Adguard onto mine and it works fine out of the box. The only thing I can't enable on it is https filtering since there is no app available that can save the certificate. I've even tried sideloading Google Files but that didn't allow me to save the certificate either. For now, I don't think it's possible to save the crt file for https filtering on the Chromecast.
I'm using a stock Chromecast HD with Google TV.
