We all know about the video demonstrating the so-called hacking of Samsung's iris scanner. What I want to know is whether or not anyone else in any part of the world has since successfully replicated the hack. (I don't care which Samsung phone was used, as long as it was successful. Any?)
I ask here because I couldn't find anything about this online, besides the original video.
I want evidence that it can be done, or, evidence that it cannot be done (at least so easily). That's what I'm looking for.
AND...... I've thought about this for some time...
If someone is trying to take a high-quality infrared photo of my eyes while I'm wearing GLASSES, could it also fool my iris scanner? When I'm trying to unlock with my glasses on, I'd have to open my eyes pretty wide for it to work, whereas without my glasses I don't have to make that extra effort. So I guess maybe my glasses would offer some protection from infrared cameras??
I have tried and failed. Took pictures with s7e and with my Nikon dslr. Printed high quality photos and used phone screen. Only way to unlock was using my real eyes. Just my experience, I am not a real hacker or anything , just curious .

Did your devices support infrared? You'd need to capture an infrared image of your eyes to do the hack.
Samsung s10 is coming out with the ultrasonic fingerprint reader. Other manufacturers are using the time of flight face unlock.
Whats your preference and why? I like the potential of the new face unlock but there are fewer situations where the fingerprint reader is better. The only thing keeping me in the Samsung camp is their incredible screen. If only there was a manufacturer that has great displays with face unlock...
I prefer face unlock by far. It's the future and I don't understand why samsung has rejected it.
Samsung should have used a serious 3D face unlock in s10. Or even both 3D face unlock and ultarsonic fingerprint like huawei mate 20 pro.
My biggest concern about in-screen ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is that "in- screen" part, you know glass screens do crack and break, how much $$$$ will they be asking for replacement if the sensor and the glass are not serviceable as two separate things but only as one, integrated unit.

Exactly my thought, a $1000+ phone should have both...
I prefer fingerprint reader mainly because with face unlocking you need to point your phone at your face which can get annoying.

Probably because its annoying to use, you always have to point at your face. If the phone is sitting on my desk 2 feet away how am i supposed to unlock it? Pick it up and point at my face? Using your finger to unlock it is just easier.
I highly doubt TOF face unlock is the "future"
Im going to have to agree with most in this thread. I use the Iris unlock because the film scratched away from my fingerprint sensor. Its horrible having to pickup my phone and look directly at it.
Using a Mate 20 Pro, accurate face unlock is much much better than an in-display fingerprint scanner, and from what I've seen the difference between ultrasonic and optical is not that big.

Exactly! I noticed the unlock speed of optical vs ultrasonic is almost the same. I rather have the 3d face unlock like on my mate 20.
Part of the appeal of a fingerprint scanner is to be able to use it in situations where you can't use face unlock.
I use my phone at literally all times throughout the day. My biggest concern is unlocking it via face unlock when there's no light. I use my phone in bed while my wife is asleep and find myself constantly locking it, unlocking it, etc.
So will it work in the dark? Normal face unlock on most Android phones just use the camera to match a face, but does the Pixel 4 do the exact same thing, or is there a bit more technology in it that will somehow scan my face in the dark and unlock it?
Any insight would be great!
That's one of the main reasons I got this phone, believe it or not. I can't stand unlocking in the middle of the night with those god-awful f*cking optical fingerprint sensors, blinding the sh*t out of you. So, yeah, I'm pretty sure it works in the dark since they used infrared cameras, the soli radar sensor, flood illuminator and the dot projector.

Pitch Black as well? Also, could you test soli in pitch black?

Yes
I turned all the lights off. You do have to press to lock button. It lights up the screen and unlocks it instantly

I can live with that, thank you. That's a lot better than being blinded by that built-in fingerprint sensor. Regardless of all the hate, I am really looking forward to it.

Which phones have a lit fingerprint sensor? My Pixel 2 XL is just a drab, dark circle on the rear of the phone.

This. Which is unfortunately what I have been stuck with, to date. The 31st can't come fast enough.
Not only will your phone unlock in the dark, but if you face your phone towards a mirror and get close to the mirror, it will unlock from your reflection (yes, even in the dark).

That depends on the type of fingerprint sensor. You seem to be referring to the under the screen kind of which there are two types. There are the ones that basically use a camera sensor to take a picture of your finger through the screen. Those are less secure and do require the screen to light up. There is also the better one from Qualcomm that uses ultrasound to make a 3D mapping of your fingerprint. It is more secure and doesn't require the screen to light up. The Galaxy S10 and Note 10 have the ultrasonic type. I think OnePlus uses the optical type but I'm not sure.
I really would have liked it the Pixel 4 had the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor instead of (or many in addition to) the dumb face unlock.

Yes, I am aware that there are two different types of FP sensors currently available for in screen operation. Ultrasonic being the better and more secure of the two, and obviously works in more conditions than the optical sensor, but unfortunately it's slow as hell as of right now. Which is something I don't understand about OnePlus, why they couldn't use the ultrasonic and just work on the software. Part of the reason why I'm ditching one plus, they're not really good when it comes to software, but they have no problem throwing a sh*t ton of hardware at it to try and make you forget that fact. IMO, optical was last year's tech, companies should be working on making ultrasonic more functional and affordable. As for adding one to the P4, I guess that's user preference. I feel the face unlock will be enough, for me.

My only guess on why One Plus went for the optical sensor is the same reason it doesn't get IP certification.....cost. The ultra sonic sensor probably costs more than the optical sensor. I haven't really had a chance to use either one myself but in the videos I've seen of Samsung phones the ultra sonic sensor does seem to work pretty quick.

Lol, it nearly has. It has been everything I can do not to chuck this POS against a wall. I have even considered selling it and buying a burner, it's so bad. P4xl is due Thursday, so another day or two shouldn't be too bad. Stoked

I hate this too. It always amazes me there isn't more complaints about it
I registered my face in good light and while wearing my glasses. In most situations face unlock seems to work well, but when I'm in bed without glasses, it doesn't work at all. I wear pretty strong prescription glasses, could that be it? Should I rescan while not wearing glasses?
Yep, I noticed the same. Especially when laying on the side on a pillow, so only ~3/4 of the face is visible to the Phone.
Maybe add an additional face?

I was thinking the same thing, regarding a second face scenario.
I've been told I am two-faced! How can I add another face? Can't see the option anywhere.
I registered without glasses, and I have no issue unlocking while wearing glasses, sunglasses, or even a hat.
How do we redo the face registration?
I feel like I didn't do a good job the first time.
TIA

This. I did the same thing and it works perfect with or without glasses
Noticed the same thing as well I believe if you have a pillow or anything behind your head while sleeping it struggles also could be the fact that while sleeping it flattens youlr face so may be that's why it doesn't work.
I deleted my face and relearned without glasses. Unlock with glasses is a little bit slower now, but unlock in bed is much better.
Sadly there seems only one face that could be trained, not more like fingerprints? What if I want to share the phone with gf or so?
Damn I really miss the fingerprint sensor!
I think it's been well covered, but I too registered without glasses and have no trouble unlocking with glasses. I can wear a beanie, my hood pulled up, glasses, in a not well-lit room, instant unlock every time.
Works fine for me with or without glasses. Sometimes I takes longer when I am laying on my back in the dark. But, it still works.

I registered my face in moderate lighting, glasses on.
No issues detecting my face with glasses on or off, with sunglasses, glasses and sunglasses with a hat on, and glasses with a hat on and Sony over ear headphones on.

100% agree. I've relearned my face multiple times now and I'm still waiting for it to be unlocked when bringing it to my face, with the fingerprint sensor it was unlocked before even coming out of my pocket.
Why is there no option learn MULTIPLE FACES!!!! What the actual ****? Let us give it more chance to be accurate, even iPhone can do this lmao.. I've had the phone for 24 hours now and its starting to feel like the windows vista of the windows world.
Hows the face recognition for you ?
Seems very sluggish and delayed
and very hit & miss I've obviously registered my face twice one in good light and another in less light but still very un reliable and normally end up putting pin code in as quicker , anybody else got any good tips to improve recognition speed etc , I'm also using full screen tempered glass that actually covers front camera not that it should impair the camera but could be a factor I suppose,
It also pretty much makes the fingerprint reader un useable as can't even register finger print with it on just fails and also have increased sensitivity turned on , hope Samsung can improve both areas I could take screen protector of and may improve but run the risk of scratching up display with only GG3 used , anybody going without a screen protector hows performance for you in face unlock and fingerprint ?? Face unlock works okay most of the time, I even have 'Faster recognition' and 'Brighten screen' turned off and it works great in daylight, okay in lowlight and not working in the dark.
Fingerprint sensor works well when I hit the green mark from the right angle otherwise it's a bit slow and doesn't match.
In conclusion both of them are very much usable but not at a flagship level experience.

Very true hopefully can be improved with future updates I've since changed tempered glass and now fingerprint works better as you said it's not perfect or as quick as say oneplus but useable
