Stutter and lag of UI and opening apps - Nokia 7 Plus Questions & Answers

I have been eyeing this phone for a while now, mainly for the battery life. However, I have read on the Reddit forums about issues with lag in general everyday usage which theoretically shouldn't have in comparison with other lesser powered phones.
Have any of you owning this phone experience this?.
Appreciate your inputs!

Try this

Won't that significantly reduce battery life?
To answer OP, I have not really experienced lags, it happened sometimes while quick switching apps, nothing annoying. But reading user reports show there is something, probably related to user habits, installed apps, etc. N7+ software needs some polishing?

System animations are definitely not well optimized. Specially app switching makes it stutter a lot. Doing the trick mentioned above seemed to have helped somewhat with app opening animations but app switching is still stuttering as mad. Hope they fix it in an update. This phone surely is capable of being smooth all around.

I have experienced this. Stutter was huge while switching apps and going from home screen to Google now. After doing the trick mentioned in the second post it's much better. Still not perfect though.

No stutter here, running on O 8.1 May security update. 7+ TA 1055
Sent from my Redmi Note 5 using Tapatalk

I'm on the same build (8.1), May Update and model 7+TA 1055. Definitely getting lag with swiping to Google app and multitasking. Also tried the disabling of the components shown in 2nd post. Can't see a difference. Will return it and try another 7+. Can't bear to give up yet, the rest of the phone, I like a lot...?

I installed the android P beta, and the stutter is completely gone. Also, on 8.1 i was experiencing a Little delay while closing apps, which is gone either. Although there are some minor bugs in P, i prefere P anyways.

I'm glad to hear that! I've also been watching footage on YouTube on Android P for N7+. It certainly looks smoother to me as well. I'm just to chicken to flash to P and flash back. Anyways I hope Nokia doesn't wait until P to start the optimisations. For now, I'm simply not using the Google app lol.

I am on Oreo 8.1....there is definite lag and hiccup in general performance..with SD 660 and pure android, it should be butter smooth.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Seems like the lags are due to lack of software optimization and not a deal breaker issue. Here in Hong Kong it is selling for 315 USD, I think I'm gonna take that deal.

[Q] Scrolling is choppy on some apps (Maps, calendar, LWP...)

Hello everyone.
I'm coming to the Z3c from a Nexus 5 (that fell to it death last week :-/) and I have a problem : Scrolling is very choppy in some apps. For example google maps was MUCH smoother on the Nexus 5, which doesn't make any sense since the SnapDragon 801 inside the Z3c is supposed to be slightly faster and it only has to render in 720p instead of 1080p.
I experience the same thing on calendar and in Live Wallpapers where the scrolling of the icons is very smooth, but the LWP behind is choppy. This makes me think it may not be the whole system being slow, but maybe some kind of framerate cap on elements rendered with openGL or something ?
Anyway, that's really irritating that my older, cheaper phone seemed to run much smoother, does anyone know why this happens and if I can fix it ?
Many thanks !
Coming from an HTC One M8 that is also my impression: in some apps scrolling is much choppier than on my M8, even though the Snapdragon 801 in the Z3C is clocked higher and the display resolution is much lower, which should also result in higher performance. I most notice this in Talon for Twitter and the Play Store app, when I open the description of an app in there and scroll down. I realize that in these cases some content like images is being downloaded while scrolling, so some choppiness is probably to be expected, but still, on my M8 I don't experience this, everything is super-smooth in the exact same situations, so it must be possible for Sony to improve this. I'm hoping for a firmware update (which is long overdue imho).
Thanks for your reply, at least I know I'm not crazy.
I wonder if it's a bug (or just poor performance) or actually made on purpose to save battery life or something.
In any case, I'd really appreciate it if someone has a fix.
Have you updated the maps recently? The newer versions are way slower. Though it's fine on the Z3 but not totally smooth.
Yes, updated to the same version on all of my devices : Almost perfectly smooth on the Nexus 5 and Shield Tablet, choppy on the Z3 compact :-/
Maybe it's some kind of incompatibility between the latest version of Maps and KitKat since the z3c is the only one running 4.4 ?
Yeah I'd say let's wait another month or two until lollipop is out.

Lag

I've had the Moto X for about a month and a half and one thing that's always bothered me is the odd software lag. Let me point out where this is most noticeable:
- Twitter: with images enabled in the news feed, scrolling becomes extremely jittery. this issue is non-existent on the Galaxy S5 (I've tried them side by side and they have the same processor)
- Google Music: terrible experience all around when it comes to animations. when opening the app, the bar on the bottom that pops up with your last played track lags. when selecting your library the app lags when loading album artwork. everything about this app is laggy which is odd for the 801 + 320 chipset.
There are other areas where the phone stutters and I can't figure out why. It's been like this since day 1, and I don't have an excessive amount of apps running in the background (usually 850mb of RAM being used). Opening the app drawer and scrolling between home screens is smooth - it's just the graphics performance in apps can be utter crap. Anyone else notice this? I'm running 4.4.4 btw. I've been thinking of doing a software reset but don't want to go through the hassle. I don't have any out-of-the-ordinary apps installed so I'm baffled as to why an almost stock Android device behaves likes this.
This happens to me as well. For the hardware in the Moto X it sure doesn't perform like it. I actually made a post just like this the other day.
Are you rooted? I'm considering downgrading back to 4.4.4 I cannot stand it. I will probably end up returning the phone for a refund.
I'm honestly surprised to hear this, my moto X has been smoother than my nexus 5. I'd really try the master reset and load up apps a few at a time to see if/when you get lag again.
Something has got to be going on with your phone, the Moto X is hands down the smoothest Android phone I've ever owned which says a lot because I've owned upwards of 20, and most of them were flagships. I also have the N5 at the moment and the X is noticeably smoother when side by side, and that is a major feat considering how insanely smooth the N5 is. I'd do a reset and maybe even a reflash if you can. If that doesn't work, maybe you just got a bad device.
Me too especially chrome both on kitkat and lollipop and only on specific websites. Google books too to be honest but hardly noticeable.
I was surprised to see a bit of jitter considering the high praise it gets.
Now perhaps this is just how it should be, but the z3 compact with same specs felt faster albeit with a smaller res.
I've noticed it too. Can we find a common theme?
Mine is the pure edition with system version 22.21.11 lollipop
Build number LXE22.46-11
Moto additional features turned on
Not modified, not rooted

Just to follow up. I ended up unlocking the boot loader and rooting my phone, in the process essentially factory wiping it. Since then it's been noticibly faster.
I doubt it has anything to do with rooting it and everything to do with resetting it. I believe the OTA update to lollipop out of the box just left too much crap in the cache maybe? Who knows.
Now it's just like the nexus 5 in terms of fluidity
I noticed some terrible lag with the Telus 4.4.4 build. Even with a full reset it just never seemed to live up to the hardware standards. At absolutely everything my Nexus 7 2013 was faster(with both using the ART runtime).
One possibly significant thing I noticed with 4.4.4 is if I would ftp a file via wifi from a local machine the speed was incredibly slow, only 300kB/sec. Wifi however was super fast for nearly anything else, I also ran a flash benchmark test and it was quick. But when ftping and writing to flash it was always slow. I have since updated to the t-mobile lollipop build and the same ftp is now 2600kB/sec and the entire phone is quicker with no lag.
Lollipop runs like crap. Getting constant redraws all the time

That lower res makes all the difference in the world. It has the same SOC as all the current flagships, but because of the 720p display it'll outperform any of them. That's also one of the reasons why it gets such great battery life too. That phone is one seriously awesome piece of tech. And as much as I hate OEM skins, I actually like Sony's.
A lot of phones sometimes get lagged up after an OTA, even the iPhone can and has for ppm and myself. If clearing cache in recovery don't help try a factory reset. Its not a problem with just the moto x.

Clearing cache did not have an effect, but a factory reset seems to have completely alleviated the lag/stuttering issues. Thanks!

Has it improved?

I owned a T705, it was my phone and tablet, i loved it.
However, the camera was bad, and the whole Interface was very jittery.
I understand that this device is not getting updates from Samsung, but man, i sure miss the screen real state, also beautiful.
Have lollipop custom roms reached a state where they improve over samsungs touchwiz performance?
I am considering it, alas i read that a new Tab S might be coming.
Thanks.
We have unofficial build of cm12 and its very stable. Way better than touchwiz too. Its still being worked on so its not perfect. CM11 is great on it also. Both do improve performance over touchwiz. There is also a new tab s coming soon but that always expected from samsung. Up to you

How is the battery life of the cm12?
This is what I got. I measured screen on times and standby times and this is what i got. This is from the T800 so you may get less because of lte and other stuff
Well, one of the problems if you own a T-705 is that under CM you will lose the phone features (CM 11 and 12 are for the T-700 only). I suggest that you try IronRom instead: definitely smoother than stock.
One rumor we heard is that the next generation flagship tablet will have a 4:3 screen ratio and a 64-bit processor, but it won't be coming until the end of year or late summer at the least. My preference is to have a 16:10 screen on my tab s.
I'd like a 4:3 personally since I do way more reading on my tablet than anything else. 16:10 is better for watching videos, but that's what I have my TV for
I don't have the money to upgrade so soon though
Thank you all for your Input.
My question is, with say, IronRom, is the performance improvement noticeable?
I found The Tab S beautiful, but very choppy overall, maybe the processor wasnt optimized for 2k, even with some custom ROMs (i used Selamba mostly back in the day) the performance of the UI was very below par, however, applications ran well enough, this led me to believe that it might have been touchwiz and not the hardware itself.
Thank you.

I wish there was a video on how it works on the user interface, i currently own a OnePlus one and have the chance to sell it, i miss the size of a tablet, but i dont want to regret getting it and find out the stutter is still there, there are rumors that it will be getting Lollipop soon too (Tab S), and maybe those optimizations will make the difference.
Thanks again.

I was planning to get the T-705 because i dont like carrying two devices around, thats the thing with CM11/12, they dont support calls, so id have to go with IronRom with is pretty much touchwiz, and while it may have optimizations, i dont expect miracles

Wait. WHAT??
No, they are updating it, but official updates stopped at 4.4.2, now we have news that they will update it to Lollipop, but after release, there was no continuous updates as with their other devices, and for some people, it was a good sign that samsung just abandoned the device, that's what i meant.

Come on guys, which part of the stock GUI or launcher is actually choppy? Where is the mythical lag? Haven't seen it myself.

The part where its choppy on stock firmware is just scrolling through the launcher. It lags when just scrolling through the launcher and switching between some apps (ex clash of clans). Iron rom has none of that. Sometimes the GUI lags when you have too many apps open and it uses all the ram. Example like 16 games open all at once. It can freeze and force a reboot. GUI doesnt lag that much like the launcher. Hope this helps!

I am not sure which part of scrolling through launcher is supposed to give lag. I have three screens worth of application icons in the app launcher and I had no problems with those. As for having 16 games open, I don't see how that represents typical usage.

Lol yeah. If your a typical user, 4-6 apps open or less, it can handle it. 16 apps open would be a user who stresses the cpu and gpu.
Well, in my experience there is some lag basically everywhere with the stock ROM, not only in the launcher. Loading pages and scrolling is also slightly choppy in any browser, and also in applications that use WebView components.
I wouldn't rate this as very evident, especially because the CPU has plenty of cores, but it is there.
With IronRom + SkyHigh kernel + Nova Launcher + things get smoothened just that small bit that makes everything feel right

Scrolling behaviour - issue or not?

Guys,
I need your opinion on something. I have this annoying thing that given my slight OCD is going to drive me crazy. It's this: scrolling in any app (main culprits are Facebook and Youtube) is simply not as smooth as on my OnePlus One. It has this stuttering effect which is not super obvious at first, but when the phones are next to each other the difference is highly noticeable.
What is your experience with scrolling in apps? Is it smooth as butter or do you also notice some stutter? Could I have a dud device? Anyway to find out?
Scrolling seems fine to me, but I'm not comparing it with something else side by side, and have no ocd...

I have ocd too and im very sensitive to lag and choppy scrolling. Completely agree. I have the oneplus one as well. Note 5 is faster everywhere but scrolling is not that smooth. YouTube is really choppy compared to other phones. My oneplus one's screen is much less responsive though. input lag everywhere so I would rather have the note 5's choppy scrolling instead.

It's just bizarre really. This thing absolutely flies, it has power to spare, multitasking, Youtube, gaming ... but certain things are just not smooth.
Things I notice that bother me:
Scrolling in apps... Main culprits Youtube and Facebook
Pulling down notification shade... A subtle stutter
Scrolling through a long list op open apps... A small stutter in the beginning
It's small things, but it seems to have issues with refreshing graphics somehow. I don't know, I'm not knowledgeable enough. Unfortunately there is no root available yet for my model (N9200) so all I can do is wait I guess,

I have noticed all those except for the notification shade. I disabled a bunch of apps of course, including that Quick connect and the other thing that was up there all the time, so maybe that helped. I am seeing a ton of improvements in scrolling with all the apps I have disabled but not to where I would call it super smooth. For some reason scrolling in the browser is pretty smooth which is usually the place i see problems on other phones. It must have something to do with how touchwiz handles scrolling cache. If someone comes up with a mod to adjust it, that may almost be a big enough reason for me to root my phone.

Thanks. Yeah, I've done the same (disabling apps etc...). It definitely not bad, but it's not as smooth as other Android phones I've used. Fast yes, perfectly smooth, no.
Updates seem to come quickly. I've had 2 already in 2 weeks. let's see. And with Android M around the corner, I'm sure in a few weeks/months things will be perfect.
Samsung have anyways had this issue with their phones. Never been butter smooth due to bloat ware mainly. No matter the specs phone lags and stutters, I think Samsung should ditch TW.
Note 5 is a fantastic looking phone but ui is concerning.

I compared it to my galaxy s5 and it's worse. Why is scrolling terrible? I hope somebody comes up with the fix, id bloated about everything I can, and factory reset.

One thing I found works is to install Adguard (not in store, just google it). It will block ads and make scrolling in Chrome a lot better. The only annoying part I would say is a persistent VPN notification. Adguard uses a local VPN which results in a permanent notification. If you can live with that I found it to be pretty great.

I thought it was just in my head but I gave adguard a try after some time of not using it and I thought it made the whole system faster. Still not 100% sure but things could be a tad smoother and more responsive in general. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth having it constantly running in the background and using chrome or just using lightning browser with its ad blocker built in.

My AT&T version has no issue in scrolling - either in the UI or individual apps I use. I'll get some lag when scrolling fast in the Gallery or FlickFolio but that's because I'm scrolling faster than the thumbnails can load. That's an OS thing, not a h/w or UI thing. Overall the diet Samsung put TW and their own apps on has really paid off.
I'm starting to believe it has something to do with the last "performance increasing update " . I can see from other threads on here that not everyone is on it yet. I received it mid last week. I had another Note 5 before which I returned as it had an issue with the Screen. That one never got upgraded to that stage and was very smooth. This one I have now felt smooth as well, but think that it got worse with the upgrade. I'm now on the update captured in the screenshot. It ends in AHO4. The one before was AHO2.
Once I've figured out how to flash that version on there using Odin3, I will give that a shot and turn off automatic updates. To be continued...

Poor performance...

So I'm fairly new to the Nexus 6, but I have had a Nexus 5 in the past (More recently coming from a Zenfone 2)..I've noticed that while applications open fairly quick on Marshmallow (Even the system UI is fairly smooth), I get a lot lag and jank in scrolling, and applications that work well on my girlfriend's 5x have poor performance on my 6.
Can anyone else relate to this? Apps like Pintrest, Instagram, Tumblr, Ebay, Amazon all aren't as smooth as they should be, and sometimes web browsing can be horrendous (Almost like a touch delay when scrolling).
I've tried clean wipes, flashed the stock images, tried non-stock roms, different kernels, everything I can think of, but to me, the phone just isnt as smooth as I thought it would be. I get that it's over a year old, but I still expected a bit more.
Am I alone here? Again, the UI itself is fine, its more application based \ scrolling based.
Well, the 6 and 5x have the same GPU, more or less. The 5x GPU is miniaturized, but otherwise identical.
The 5x has a 1920x1080 display, or roughly 2 million pixels.
The 6 has a 2560x1440 display..... 3.7 million pixels.
So, why would you possibly imagine that with the SAME GPU, but nearly TWICE the number of pixels, that the 6 would be able to produce the same graphical performance as the 5x?
*** UNREASONABLE EXPECTATIONS!!!

Have you tried turning off the encryption? When I came from the N5 I noticed the phone was not as smooth as the N5 until I turned the encryption off. Early on it made a big difference as they did not have NEON encryption optimizations enabled. Was that was enabled the difference was small but it is still noticeable to me between haveing the encryption running and not. It is not night and day but I think you will notice it.

I don't think expecting a phone that's a little over a year old, (That was a flagship mind you), to run smoothly is unreasonable. While it's pushing more pixels than the 5x, the processor should be quite similar, along with an extra GB of ram.

I am running a modified stock ROM now that has encryption turned off, and it is a little better, but unfortunately you're right, it's not night and day.

I have none of these issues on my 6
Go in developer options and try to turn off all animation transitions, that improved speed for me

I've had my Nexus for 13 months. (Purchased in February 2015). I've rooted and run various ROMs on the device over the last year. Since I have the Next plan with AT&T I've been planning on upgrading soon so a couple weeks ago I went back to unrooted stock. Since then I've been having the same issues you mention. I don't have a 5x to compare to, but it is definitely lagging a lot more than before. Last night I was trying to view something on Amazon, and it just sat there with a white screen. Many times my keyboard stays floating above the homescreen when I press the "home" softkey, or stays floating after I am done typing in Facebook, messenger etc. It just LAGS big time. Also the battery drain has been horrendous. I've been getting so PO'd at it I've been tempted to go get a Note (GASP!) Last night was the last straw I uninstalled swiftkey (been a avid user for years never an issue) and the CM Locker I had installed so I could have a different lock screen photo (since I'm no longer rooted). I'm giving it 24 hours, and if it is still acting up, I am either re-rooting or upgrading (although there's like NOTHING that I like right now for devices).

I just did that. Hopefully that helps with my issue too.
Well, mine is mostly related to the jank when scrolling through applications. The UI, keyboard, ect all works fine. However, The worst is browsing web sites with chrome - I can flick to scroll up and there almost seems to be a second delay sometimes. I've never experienced anything like that before. Also when when using apps such as twitter, amazon, ebay, ect, the scrolling is really bad - Worse than my Zenfone 2.
Again, I've fastboot flash'd the complete stock rom multiple times, tried various kernels\modded roms, ect. They all display this behavior, some worse than others.
I love the size, screen quality, and build of this phone, but for a phone that's last year's Google flagship, I find the performance horrible.
Try turn off animations anyway, you don't have to be rooted, unlocked, yust tap build number 7 times, back to settings/ developer options and put to 0 trazitions, animations,animator..and optionally reboot.

Have to say, I have none of those issues as someone else also stated. If it does the same on stock, it might be hardware related. How does the phone behave in recovery? Is scrolling as normal? What recovery are you using? And when you say you went back to stock, did you do a complete factory reset including deleting all your personal data? If so, you can also try re-locking your bootloader and unlocking it and then flash factory image from Google. That will also erase everything off your device, including personal data.
With thousands of people here on XDA using a Nexus 6, your issue seems to be specific to you and your device. Maybe it is a screen/digitizer issue.
Seemed to me the February build was slow and janky but the the March was back to normal performance for me, op didn't state what build you were on. Might be an option

I'm on the March build. I usually fastboot flash every img myself, then do a factory reset in recovery when trying to get back to stock..This time I just used the Flash-All.bat for the March image and I'll do some testing. I doubt this method is the difference, I'm grasping at straws. I'm semi concerned now if no one else is having these issues...Or maybe my expectations are just too high.
Perhaps I'll try a screen recording app and see if I can capture what I'm running into. It's not all apps, and it's not all the time, but its definitely noticeable.
you're not alone. i recently picked up a ZTE zmax 2 and did a side by side app load speed test. the ZTE zmax 2 loaded up youtube noticeably faster, had thumbnails faster, and played faster when clicking play. the zmax 2 is a midrange ATT phone with Snapdragon 410, 2gb ram, 720p screen. it costs $99 at best buy today..
I've noticed this too between my Nexus 6 (purchased 4/2015) and my wife's Nexus 6 (purchased 10/2015). Hers is noticeably smoother.
I do have occasional screen tearing on mine when I use certain kernel/ROMs, so maybe it's janky hardware.

I know the frustration, for me it is kernel related, but we cant do nothing, we need new device tree by google. I'm really disappointed that g3 has QHD screen with 801 and is smoother than nexus 6 with 805

My wifey has a G3 and I can't agree. When she is using my phone, she is always amazed how fluid it is.

Is your wife g3 on 6.0 marshmellow?
Flashing stock over again really didn't do much for performance. I Did however root it, and increase the GPU clock (Actually set it to performance idles at 300mhz then shoots to 600hmz), and that does seem to help. I can sacrifice battery for better performance in this instance.
Have to agree, at around the end of the day (by 40% battery) my phone slows down. I went pure stock. A quick reboot fixes it. But a tad frustrating
