S2 9.7" SM-T815 - faulty power and volume keys - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Tab S2 has had an issue with the volume down and power button for a while now. They both only work with a very hard press - the power button very very hard.
I am planning to take the screen off and see if something has just come loose. Has anyone accessed those buttons from inside? Is there anything I should look at for?
It's well out of warranty and I am actually just doing this so I can sell the thing.
Would appreciate some help.
Thank you.

Power button - Is it hard to press?

My biggest concern with this phone is the power button. I'm used to the power button on the side on Samsung Galaxy devices. With the power button on top, I'm afraid I won't be able to turn on the phone holding it with single hand. If you own an HTC One, can you comment on the ease of use of the power button?
It really isn't much of a problem
Incredibly easy. not noticed anything hard about it.

Power button feels "flimsy" (german: wackelig)

Hello,
a few days ago, I noticed, that the power button on my xperia z feels somehow "flimsy". I don't know if this is the right word, in german i would say "wackelig" (in case some other german guy can help me out with the translation).
When I lay my finger on the power button, I can move it from side to side, just a little bit.
It is not such a big problem, I know, but I feel like this power button should be mounted precisely as Sony produced a video only about the power button and how well it is manufactured.
Can the power button on your phones also be moved from side to side?
I'm afraid now to throw the phone into the water...
Thanks for checking on this.

Hy,
I have the the Problem too, the power button is "wackelig".
That's how this button works. It "rotates" a bit to the left/right. Don't worry about it, you can safely put your phone underwater - the button is fine.

I have the same issue with my SXL and here is what I do ..
1. Use CWM Recovery (Search the forums) - it will switch on your phone on connecting it to with a charger/USB cable. This comes in handy if I remove the battery and since the power button does not work at all, I cannot power on the phone in any other way. Once I plug in my switched off SXL, CWM Recovery starts up the phone and I get to reboot it from Recovery.
2. USe a custom ROM (I would recommend CodeFireX from Anders if you like 4.2.2 or RunnyKitKat from Onejay for 4.4.2) and under settings get the volume to wake feature turned on. Now you can wake the phone screen using the volume buttons.
3. Get an app from the Play Store - "Reboot Menu widget", which becomes a soft menu button to reboot or shutdown, or take a screen shot or to simply close down the screen...
I couldn't get my power button fixed as the device was out of warranty and I did not want to spend the exorbitant prices these guys were asking. So that's what anyone with a broken power button can do.. Hope this helps

Hi
Power button and volume buttons are identical with buttons used for HD2.
HD2 buttons are attachable, there is 5 of them and they are very cheap.
Get them and find someone with soldering gun with thin tip (for smd) who could solder them for you.

Cool thanks for telling that, now i just got to find someone with an HD2 LOL.
90% of people i know have iphones, so thats going to be hard :fingers-crossed:
Search for some combination of these words on ebay and replace the main board. It's usually the little micro-switch that's gone so replacing the plastic button doesn't do anything.

Button is located (soldered) on the board and is covered with protective tape.
When broken usually only plastic body stays on board. Transparent cover (with black dot) and micro disk comes off and for that reason button does not work. Whole plastic button needs to be unsoldered and replaced.
I attached picture of HD2 buttons which you can buy i.e on ebay.
I did it twice (first time with volume then with power button) and it costs nothing.
Replacing whole board is quite expensive and unnecessary - in my opinion.

Power button loose

My power button has some play to it where it very clearly wiggles up (towards the top of the phone) and down (towards the bottom). The volume buttons don't have this. Is anyone else experiencing this and is it normal? Thanks!

Mine does the same. I'm fairly sure that it's a normal thing. It's not really a big deal unless it falls out
It is normal. My Droid Maxx('s) have all been the same. Carry on enjoying the new phone.
It's normal, unless yours is hanging outside of the phone or something ridiculous. But yes, there is some "wiggle" on the power button.
I thought it was normal until my power button stopped functioning several hours ago (no more 'clicking'). I've had a cheap Diztronic rubber case around the outside and I never liked how the power button felt with or without the case. I've had the phone since a few days after it was released. Luckily I have it moforooted and I can turn the screen on and off through remaps until I can get a replacement.
Just a warning that the power button may be gentle and liable to damage easily (I haven't dropped it too much, and there's only minor scratches to the sides).
Did you end up ordering a power button replacement and that solved the issue for you? Thanks!

You can't get a replacement power button. I had my phone replaced and it fixed the power button issue. If you can order a replacement part, it's going to void your warranty by disassembling the phone to fix. I figure its not the button, its going to be the entire board that has the circuitry for the buttons on it so it's not some user replaceable part.
My power button does the same as what OP stated. Never had a problem with it though.

I'm not an expert by any stretch on the hardware of smart phones, but I'd be careful. If your phone is still under warranty, you may want to just send it in to be replaced (note they may reject it if it has bootloader unlock). I don't know if the power button pops out like the volume buttons, and again I'm not sure that the button itself is the problem. Anyway, just be careful, you don't want to rip the power button out and end up physically damaging your phone to the point it could be rejected for warranty replacement.
Perhaps one of the fellows in the direct hardware access thread can advise on whether you can simply pull the volume button out without breaking anything.

Wobbly home button on Mi5

I just got my Mi 5 and am disappointed to have gotten one with a wobbly home button. I expected the power and volume buttons to be wobbly but not the home button. Its loose on the right side especially making it seem like the whole button is slanted. Anyone have a similar issue? Is it worth the trouble of returning it or should I just live with it and hope that eventually it will even out from use?
I have the same, doesn't really bother me. If anything I'm slightly relieved it won't be prone to button stuck problems
On my unit it feels really solid. No wobbles but it's extremely hard to press up to the point where I wished it was a bit more loose. Happy the phone supports double tap to wake cause the force required to press the home button is too damn high.
Thats exactly why i have 2 tap to wake the device. My 64Gb home button is solid as hell.

yes.i have the same issue specially on the right side of home button.
but it's nothing important i think.
mine is also hard at the middle part of the button, and though it is not important it could be irritating sometimes . It would be much appreciated if someone could help this issue with a tutorial maybe.
