I just upgraded my phone (OnePlus 3T) to 5.0.3 and now I have to re-root it. For some reason, I'm unable to flash Magisk via TWRP. I don't get any error message except 'Installation failed'.
The Magisk version I'm using is the latest one. I downloaded it directly from GitHub. I also tried using the uninstaller (latest one) first but even then TWRP says 'installation failed'. Is there a way I can fix this without having to lose all of my data?
I'm using the latest version of TWRP for my device, I downloaded it directly with their app.
Thanks to anyone who'll help!
Save the recovery log after the flashing fails, and then post that. Advanced -> Copy log.

Hey guys
I rooted my OPX at Kingroot.com on a Oxygen 2.1.2.
Im trying to install the Xposed framework (downloaded from the official forum: V75) but in recovery mode when I press the .zip file it just says "Installation failed"
Anybody know what i should do? - As said I have root access
The Xposed Installer just says that the framework is not installed and that i should download the latest ZIP file from XDA and then flash it manually via recovery. It gives me no option to install...
Others have installed the framework succesfully on the Oneplus forum..
Hope you can help
What recovery are you using? If you're using the stock recovery, then there's your problem. You'll need a custom recovery like TWRP.
If you are using TWRP, then the download might be corrupted. Try downloading it again.
What exact recovery (name and version) are you using? What exact file (full filename) are you trying to flash?
Hi,
I had no problem until magisk v12, but i recently tried v13.1 and v13.2 and both failed during upgrade through magisk manager 5.0.4 and 5.0.5.
I also tried to install it directly from twrp 3.1.0.0. The install finished in a good way but when i reeboot i can check that magisk is not installed anymore.
I am running marshmallow on an alcatel idol 3.
By the way my sd storage is adoptable but i did have problem until v12.
Thanks for your help.
For me, 13.1 and everything before installed fine but 13.2 will not, I always get "installation error". I manually updated the manager, but it does not help.
Hi, same problem here, i can't update magisk, it says installation error.
How to solve that ?
I use rooted nougat on s7 edge
Anyone with this issue should post a recovery log from flashing the zip in recovery. In TWRP, go to Advanced - Copy log.
Same here ... no update possible 12-> 13.3
Hi, I'm new to modifying Android in any way. I did install TWRP 3.3.1-0 with Magisk 19.3 and I'm trying to install this update. When it restarts the phone, it goes into the TWRP recovery mode and I suppose I need to select the file in the downloaded_rom folder 'miui_CEPHEUSGlobal_V10.2.13.0.PFAMIXM_b529c3de07_9.0.zip', but when I confirm the Flash, I get an error message:
Zip Treble compatibility error!
Invalid zip file format!
Error installing zip file '/sdcard/downloaded_rom/miui_CEPHEUSGlobal_V10.2.13.0.PFAMIXM_b529c3de07_9.0.zip'
I can't find any useful information for this problem. Do you guys have a clue what I should do?
Someone in this thread mentioned, that this TWRP version worked for him. Could that also apply to my problem? If so, should I download most recent version for Android 9.x?
I have a Xiaomi Mi 9 Global Version if that is relevant.
I'm using https://forum.xda-developers.com/Mi-9/development/recovery-twrp-3-3-1-siankatabg-t3934962, and everything is fine. It download otg update, can't update then download recovery rom and update from it with no problem.
It worked flawlessly with that TWRP build. Thank you!
i saw an update on Redmi Note 8T (11.0.9).
I'm rooted with TWRP, so I just tried to update. New update was downloaded into directory downloaded_rom.
phone was automatically rebooted into TWRP, but I didnt know there is update in that directory. I just rebooted device into system.
I got a message that update failed. I click update and started to look for file/folder created during download process. So i discovered directory downloaded_rom in root folder.
phone was automatically rebooted into recovery (twrp) and it was flashing update without my help.
after reboot, device was updated. the only thing to do was flash TWRP (i have paid version of TWRP) and flash magisk.
everything works fine and my phone is rooted on 11.0.9.
i thing, that second file was whole ROM (1.9GB)
in my personal experience, if you get rebood to twrp, flash Disable Dm Verity ForceEncrypt to boot into rom

Was Magisk installed before the update? Since you are saying it rebooted to TWRP without you knowing, were you able to restore stock images before updating? Could you also provide information concerning the update? For example, miui version (updating from vXXX to vXXX)

Was Magisk installed before the update? - yes, device was rooted, with Magisk installed
were you able to restore stock images before updating - dont understand this, after downloading update and clicking on install, device was rebooted into twrp
miui version (updating from vXXX to vXXX) - update from 11.0.7.0 to 11.0.9.0

What I meant was whether you uninstalled Magisk/restored original boot img prior to the update because sometimes not doing so tends to result in bootloop (happened to me before). I needed some information before I attempt the update myself. Thank you for replying.
P.S. One more question: All data was preserved, right?
Hello forum, I have been trying to root my motorola G6..
After much struggle, getting stuck in a boot loop and other issues I finally have restored stock roms and now have build PPS29-118-15-11 installed. So at least the phone works again My bootloader is unlocked.
But I still want to root it.
I think I understand the procedure well enough, but I am unsure of the correct/best versions I need for the ROMS/boot, Magisk, and TWRP.
ROMS/boot:
I found a youtube with instructions for updating Android v9
But I haven't tried it as this recommends a boot img:
OPS27.104-15-10_no-verity_boot.img
OPS27.104-15-10_no-verity_boot.img | by dejello for Moto G6

I am reluctant to use the above as it looks to be a downgrade from my current version 29-118-15-11.
Also, I thought that the filename prefix "O" indicated oreo instead of "P" for pie? So would this be a version 8 file?
TWRP:
Similarly, I am not sure if I am using the right, or best TWRP version. I currently have twrp-v3.2.3-ali.img
I flash this (with fastboot) and it works but shortly after I encounter the "no command" error (when booting to recovery) and I have to redo it. I am NOT overwriting it with a stock recovery.img.
I have also run into the "encryption password" problem, where I am unable to provide one to decrypt the data partition. So I can't backup the data with twrp (something I really would like to do).
Magisk
I have Magisk-23-0.zip
But I saw a post from brunogroa that recommends installing Magisk 19 and updating it to 23 later. Is this something that is required or can I just install v23?
So, I am looking for the correct versions for ROM, Magisk and TWRP to use, given that I have installed PPS29-118-15-11
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Well I finally have it I think. I noticed a comment in
[GUIDE][ROOT][Moto G6][ALI] TWRP, Root, and Magisk installation guide. by djello
"(you may not need a modified boot image for Magisk)"
When using PIE instead of OREO.
Being an optimist, I gave it a try and it worked... I installed Magisk and was able to verify root access using the Root Checker Basic App. Kept stock boot img.
This is probably not too amazing for the old hands but us newbies need a break every now and them
So in the end, all I had to do was:
(0) Unlock bootloader
(1) Install stock PPS29-118-15-11
Done earlier with another version of twrp.
Install TWRP 3.5.2
(2) fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.5.2_9-0-ali.img
(3) Use twrp to install Magisk
adb push Magisk-v23-0.zip /tmp
Boot phone into recovery and use twrp to install Magisk
(4) Boot the phone into System and verify Magisk is there and use Root Checker App to confirm I am now rooted.
Issues:
I noticed that a security update for
PPS29-118-15-11-5 failed to apply.
The phone boots into recovery mode and asks for the decrypt password. I don't know the password to decrypt data and how to proceed from here.
I suspect that if I flash the stock recovery img the security update might work. If anyone knows please comment ; I will research this also and maybe just try it.

I am stuck in a similar position.
SOLVED IT!!! Followed all of the steps that you posted except I installed Magisk with the patch method because I couldn't get the zip file to push onto the device. Kept getting a read only error, maybe because it wasn't rooted?
Anyway, I am rooted now!!!
