I think downgrading to android 4 is only possible with rollback updates. You probably need to first get to android 5. If you have unlocked bootloader, you can flash TWRP recovery and install needed android 5 firmware with it. (You need to download from huawei firmware finder, downloads from official site can't be installed this way). And then figure out where to find rollback update to android 4.
If you have unlocked bootloader and you can't get back to android 4. You can root your phone and link(move) your apps to sd-card. You'll need to create second partition on sd-card for apps.

If this still works use this to download update https://forum.xda-developers.com/tools/general/huawei-firmware-finder-team-mt-t3469146
zip file you get from there can be flashed in TWRP like any normal rom. (It will also install stock recovery.) You might want to do factory reset in stock recovery after TWRP update to make sure everything will work like stock. Also make sure download firmware for correct device or you might be having difficult time to fix your phone after installing wrong.
If firmware finder doesn't work anymore, you'll need to find firmwares yourself.

How to manualy update rooted phone by stock firmware

Hi everybody
I browse various forums and sites and I can't find a definite answer to my question. I have a model (VTR-L29C432) with stock rom (B123). Bootloader is unlocked, root and TWRP (3.1.0-0-vtr) installed.
How can I upgrade my system to (B164)? I downloaded three files using FirmwareFinder (update, update_data_full_public, update_full_VTR-L29_hw_eu).
Can I flash them with recovery (TWRP) ?
Sorry for my english (google translator)
Please help me.
Regards
Update while keeping your personal files isn't possible with rooted phone. You can use HWOTA to install a new version but all your data will get lost.

Help with up to date guide to Root

Hi,
Can someone concisely give the most up to date instructions on how to root the P20 Pro
Confused because some people talk about debranding first? Is this necessary if you, like me, just have a generic non-network branded phone?
Also.. Does rooting require twrp?
A bit unclear on if I should use the offical or unofficial twrp methods.
And if so does twrp prevent OTA updates? I was lead to believe that any OTA updates would simply wipe any root and you just have to go through the steps again, but would twrp prevent an OTA update in the first place?
What are the best instructions to root the P20 Pro to keep the OTA updates going (even if you need to reroot after each update).
Thanks heaps in getting through the confusion!
Here you have manual to root in simple 4 steps. You need adb and fastboot on your computer, bootloader unlock code and Magisk from link in post
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hu...de-how-to-root-debrand-remove-retail-t3788326
Does any of the steps,
1/ unlocking the bootloader
2/ debranding
3/ installing TWRP
3/ rooting
Wipe the device?.. I'm assuming yes?
Also. What's the point of debranding?..
I think I'm on a generic P20 Pro that wasn't bought from a carrier - so is that step necessary for me.
Thanks heaps again for the advice - coming over from the Samsung world and maybe I'm so used to the rooting methods there
Also do any of those steps prevent OTA updates?
Or is there somehow to still use OTA updates but simply need to reapply root on every occasion there is ah update?

Unlocking the bootloader will wipe your device. The other steps won't.
You need to have TWRP installed in order to be able to flash Magisk (for Root), and no you don't have to rebrand if you don't want to. You'll still be able to receive and download OTAs but if TWRP remains installed on your phone it won't be able to install unless you change back to the stock recovery. However there is methods to update with TWRP and you'll be able to get and install updates quicker than waiting for them to be pushed to you phone. That's the main reason people rebrand because generic European models are getting updates the fastest.
What's your device model and current firmware version from 'About Phone' in settings?
..

Thanks heaps for the advice - makes sense now!
I'm using the model CLT-L29 on C636 which I think is the Asia Pacific model.. And incidentally just received a OTA upgrade to the 128 firmware
.. So in order to receive OTA updates you simply have to change back to the stock recovery after using TWRP to install magisk and root?
But I imagine every time the OTA update occurs it wipes root?.. Which would mean reinstalling TWRP to regain root and doing the whole process again every time?

Yep you got it in one lol
The other option so that you don't have to flash TWRP then back to stock recovery each time is when you receive an OTA is download the same firmware (Full-OTA version) from Firmware Finder - you would just need the update.zip - then using Huawei update extractor you can extract the ramdisk.img Then copy the ramdisk.img to your phone, use Magisk manager to patch it then copy it back to your PC and flash it via fastboot. But I think this is more work than flashing between TWRP & stock recoveries haha

Root + Ota update

Hey I have p20 pro EU version 6/128
Today I got a new update about Google security.
I want every update run on my phone
But I rooted my device.
I wanted first to ask guys , I tried to update but was unsuccessful. I do not have twrp because of the method I used to root p20 pro didn't allow me having magisk and twrp recovery.
So now if I want to update have to do it manually ?
2 questions
1) which program do I use ?
2) where I can find the firmware Official WITHOUT BEEING CHANGED ANYTHING inside from someone third.
Thanks John
You need to flash the stock bootloader. If you are running Pie and Magisk, you have a modified bootloader. I don't know where to download the stock one. Could probably rip it from a stock Pie firmware.
Me to have twrp on my p20 pro and i cannot update my phone.. Have new update but when I try system update after download, its entering to recovery mode for install the firmware but it cannot coz working twrp and unsuccessful installation.
Me to look for stock recovery for clt-l29 pie

The apk from this post will allow you to download the latest firmware for your model from firmware finder and flash it without needing TWRP or having to flash stock recovery. You will have to re-root afterwards though

Download the current version you are using. Extract recovery_ramdisk.img and flash. Reboot and take OTA update. You will lose root, as I said you have a modified recovery and need stock to take OTA.
Edit - Once your done, patch the bootloader from Magisk and flash to get root again.

You said you successfully downgraded?
Then you didn't need HiSuite (and TWRP) - just WiFi and SIM card to start receiving OTA back to Nougat
And no need to open new thread each time
What was exactly full model/cust/build name from Settings/About of your running system (you didn't provide it in the first thread before downgrade, neither now?!
Flashing TWRP, downgrading/upgrading and now unbricking (?) depend on that - did you downgrade and had it working EVA-L09c432b182 or what?
And TWRP for MM is different than for N

Android 6 doesn't mean anything for your question why it doesn't upgrade to Android 7.
And again, you are not answering what is the full build name (incl cust) and number of your build as in Settings About - but if you don't mind about reading it...
If you are sitting on eg c900, you will never ever receive any upgrade.
Also, for OTA you must have WiFi but also a valid SIM card.

Hello dude,
so you want to REBRAND your phone..
You can do this but you need some files and a correct procedure...
First you need to use a working TWRP, so download and use 3.1.1-1 version...
Check DATA partition, it should be ext4, if not, convert it and format it.
To rebrand you need correct L31C432oem.zip single/dual sim file (depend on your phone)
and need a correct L31C432 single/dual sim firmware.
You have to use a correct procedure you can find here into xda, just search
how to rebrand... or.... take a look into my posts....
To flash a custom rom, just follow the steps suggested in each thread...
Let me know if you need particular help and if i can i will help you...
Cheers

Hey, i am glad to help other users..
About twrp, i would use 3.1.1-1 by HassanMirza01, just to stay safe...
So download and install it from HERE.
Do your backups and delete all safeties first... (fingerprints/pattern/pin)
Visit THIS thread, post #15 that's literally the same files and procedure as yours.
Read carefully before do anything !!
