This thread is for those who haven't modified there Stock Rom in any way and are on NPSS26.116-61-8 version. Those who :-
1. Haven't Unlocked their Bootloader.
2. Haven't Rooted their Moto G5s Plus
3. Haven't Installed any Custom Rom
4. In short, were using the phone in the simple way without any modification.
can now upgrade to Stock Oreo 8.1.0 (Soak Test 1) easily.
To do that, just follow the following steps :-
1. Download the Oreo Stock Rom

If you have already unlocked bootloader and have rooted your Moto then also you can follow this method.
Just make sure you are using stock rom when you do that. Bootloader locked or unlocked is irrelevant.
You may wish to advise users that this Oreo OTA may mean you do not receive OTA updates in the future. The reason is that this OTA is currently a soak test beta OTA. By flashing this, users move their device onto the soak test OTA path. If you're not part of the soak test program, you won't receive OTA updates.
If Motorola eventually releases OPS28.49-2 as the official OTA, then users that flashed this may be okay as they're back on the official OTA path. If not and Motorola issues another soak test OTA, then users will be stuck unless they take the responsibility to flash all the soak test OTA updates themselves or find the Oreo stock ROM.

If your device does not have NPSS26.116-61-8 firmware on it, you won't be able to apply this OTA.
However, bear in mind that this leaked file is a soak test (beta) OTA, so you may wish to wait for the official OTA to come out via Play. If you flash this OTA, as I mentioned above, you may not receive future OTA updates unless this soak test and the official OTA are the same.

Yes you are right.
Actually this method is for those users who are using their Moto without any modifications.
Those who have modified their Moto like unlocked bootloader, installed custom recovery, rooted, installed custom Rom, etc. can do everything. But Normal Users depend upon Official Updates. So this method is useful for such users.
Are there any glitches? If not I might use this as my permanent OS, as my phone is modified and I wont receive OTAs anyway. If its too glitchy I'll wait for the official oreo though.

There maybe some glitches in this as it is still in Soaktest.
But I haven't found any glitches so far which is a good thing.
I recommend you to use it as Daily Driver.

It depends upon Motorola Company.
It may be Yes or may be No.
However, if you can update to SoakTest Stock Rom then update to final Stable Rom is also possible.

Please note that, this is not the official Oreo. It's just soak test. Once you flash this, you may not receive the official update when rolls out. So go with this with caution.

You have a possible risk of hard bricking your device if you flash the stock Nougat ROM over this Oreo soak test.
The flash of the Nougat stock ROM won't be the problem - however, you may still have an Oreo bootloader on your device. Thus, taking any Nougat OTA updates may hard brick your device (and I think there's a Nougat June 2018 security patch?).
Be very careful if you choose to downgrade to Nougat. There appears to be one report that someone was able to downgrade and re-lock their bootloader from the soak test after downgrading https://plus.google.com/+LaercioCarlosPereira/posts/XoVM56UDpd1 but as they've flashed the Indian stock ROM over their Brazil stock ROM they likely won't get Nougat OTA updates anyway.

The xt1055 doesn't have 4.4.4 yet. You can install stock 4.4.2 - just find the thread in general titled 'return to 100% stock'. Everything you need is there.

It will probably be released soon but I have no way of knowing.
Yes, if you flash to stock 4.4.2, you can take the ota normally with no PC. That is assuming you don't flash custom recovery or modify /system. If you do, you cannot take the ota normally. You must flash stock recovery back first and undo any significant changes to /system. That means no Xposed, etc.
If you want further details, search XDA for how to take an ota update.

I said that's assuming you 'don't' (not didn't) do those things -- you will receive the OTA as normal AFTER following the instructions in the return to stock thread to return to 100% stock.
Once you "return to stock" you will be 100% stock - any past changes won't matter.
IF **AFTER** you follow the return to stock guide to return to full stock 4.4.2, you flash TWRP and/or modify files in /system, you can't take the OTA until you un-do all of those changes.
Understand? Nothing you did or have done previously matters. All that matters is what you do AFTER you return to stock...

Here I will put forth instructions required for successful upgrade to lollipop. (These instruction are based on my own experience. I have been using Sony Xperia and Nexus phone for quite a while and I have flashed lot of roms. I may not have much experience in developing but definitely lot of experience in flashing! )

So the questions that are bugging most people are:
1. When will the OTA be available in particular country?
2. Will I be able to smoothly able to upgrade and gain root access on Android L?
For first question: I really can't help you there. It depends on motorola. Android upgrades are rolled out region by region. So OTA will hit your phone when it is available in your region.
Second question:
To answer that, let us first consider few things.
New bootloader:
The very first note on release notes put out by Motorla says that: You cannot downgrade to a previous software version after installing this update. It means that new bootloader has been included in the update which does not allow downgrading.
ART runtime:
Android L uses new Android Runtime (ART). Some applications have not yet been optimized for ART and have problems with ART. To make sure the apps which you require daily work fine with ART, read the changlog given by its developer. If it has not yet been optimized then request the developer to optimize it for ART. If I am not wrong tools to develop apps using ART were released when Google released L preview. So you can expect many apps have been already optimized for ART.
When will the upgrade fail and when will it won't?
1. Locked/Unlocked bootloader:
If you have locked/unlocked bootloader but HAVE NOT CUSTOMIZED or HAVE NOT MESSED WITH RECOVERY AND KERNEL partition then don't worry. OTA upgrade will definitely hit your phone and you will be able to smoothly upgrade to L.
2. Modified kernel/recovery partition and root:
If you have rooted your moto g then it means you unlocked your bootloader, flashed a custom recovery and flashed the superuser binary. In this case you won't be able to upgrade to android L. According to few article I have read, you have to be completely stock before update. Completely as in you shold have never rooted your phone or flashed a custom kernel. Even if you have unrooted after rooting or flashed a stock kernel/recovery after flashing custom kernel/recovery is NOT allowed for Android L upgrade.
3. Unstable internet connection while downloading OTA.
Unstable connection might corrupt the OTA upgrade file. Make sure you have stable internet connection while downloading OTA.
Considering all these there you are in one of the following scenarios:
1. Locked/unlocked bootloader with no customizations to any partitions:
Don't worry. You won't face any problems with OTA upgrade. Just make sure all your apps work fine on ART.
2. Unlocked bootloader with stock/custom rom and sotck/custom kernel with root or unrooted after root:
You will need to flash official kitkat firmware. Official firmware images for Moto G 2014 are located here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=36
Then you can upgrade via OTA.
3. Unlocked bootlaoder, root but do not want to lose root priviliges:
Then you will need to wait till developers modify new custom roms based on android L. Then you can flash those by following their instructions. To root stock android L build, a custom kernel is required and also according to chainfire the system.img will be need to be patched. So it is not possible to root sotck android L unless motorola release kernel sources and some developer pathces the system.img.
I have no experience in handling/using/modifying carrier locked phones. So I cannot help you with those.
I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT TO FLASH STOCK/CUSTOM LOLLIPOP ROM OF DIFFERENT MOTO G VARIANT.

Well waiting for lollipop custom rom is actually the best solution yet!
You need following things to upgrade to lollipop:
New bootloader
Recovery compatible with that bootloader
Kernel comatible with lollipop rom which you want to flash
New baseband (radio)
And system and data partition image
When a developer creates a flashable zip, it generally includes:
System and data partition image
Kernel
So before flashing that lollipop rom. You just need to flash
New bootloader
Recovery
Baseband(radio)
Then from recovery you can flash the zip file.
Your bootloader needs to be unlocked to do all this.
Only problem is, it takes time for motorola to release factory images like google releases for nexus phones.
So you will need to wait till some developer captures OTA, extract all the partition images and share it online. (Make sure the uploaded partition images are of the same moto g variant which you have)

Actually it is easier to flash official kitkat images and update to lollipop with ota update. Then you can flash any custom lollipop rom just by following rom developer's instruction. It will be easier.

If you are using rooted custom rom:
Flash the complete official kitkat image. images are located here:

If you are just using rooted stock rom then follow the instruction in response to that q18. You do need to flash stock recovery as mentioned there. That's what is meant by returning to "stock".

Yes you are correct. the zip files located here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=36 contain all the official .img files. You can download it from there (I understand file size is large but it's worth downloading coz you will always be able to return to stock even if you mess up your phone pretty badly ) or you can ask on forum

What benefit gives just unlocking and not rooting?
I was running Lollipop 5.0.2 on my Moto G (2014) XT1068 (India) and wanted to downgrade to KitKat. I followed this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...dows-tool-moto-g-2014-xt1064-restore-t2957167
And although the downgrade has been successful, when I check for updates, I get a message that the phone is up to date and no updates are available whereas it should be telling me that Lollipop is available for download. Why is this happening?

I did as you said and cleared the data and cache for Google Play Services Framework app and restarted my phone but it still says that my device is up to date... What do I do now?

That happens, or the ota part of the rom is bug, or the ROM you using don't have update.
when update comes out, you search ways to flash the update. The update will come in a flash way before it release to all via OTA.

I went for this ROM but it removed TWRP from my phone for some reason. And it's not telling me that there are system updates either.
Okay, so I read somewhere that the phone doesn't receive OTA updates if the device is rooted and it has a custom recovery. So I used SuperSUs Unroot feature to unroot the phone and then flashed the stock recovery to replace TWRP.
Now the phone isn't rooted, and it has stock recovery. But even now when I'm checking for updates it's telling me that my phone is up to date. If it matters, my bootloader is still unlocked but that shouldn't prevent me from getting an OTA update right?

you are confusing too much things.
like i told you, or you have a bug rom a rom that can reach to OTA because some one has change or remove the part of the ROM that receives the OTA, the OTA is the update... Or you cause a bug on it by mistake or by a app that you installed.
If you have a stock original ROM from Motorola it must received a OTA. Don't mare if you have bootloader unlocked, rooted or custom recovery it doesn't change the habitability of the device receive the OTA.
But if you received a OTA in the stock ROM that you change the recovery and rooted it, and after the download click on update, the phone will turn off and try to update, but it will not have success and you end with a brick phone.

Actually, I had download this firmware build earlier: KXB21.85.27 but this build hasn't received the Lollipop update, so I downloaded and flashed this firmware build: KXB21.85.23 and as soon as I booted up my phone I got the OTA notification for my phone. Problem solved.

I thought so too but a simple Google search told me that you can't install OTA updates even if you are running original stock ROM if you have a custom recovery. You MUST have Stock Recovery and only then you will receive the OTA update. Your bootloader can still be unlocked though.

You have June security patch?
If you're on the 1st soak test, you likely will not be able to flash the official Oreo OTA when it comes out. The official OTA will likely require a different build to flash on.
You have a few options:
1) find and flash all the soak tests.
2) revert back to the latest stock 7.1.1 firmware and wait for the official OTA (you must flash the correct build for your device, else you will not receive OTA updates). May be problematic if you had IMEI issues previously.
3) hope the official Oreo stock ROM is leaked.

That's wild. I only know of one soak test for our device. Do you know where to find the others?

As far as I know, there's OPS28.65-7 (2nd soak test)

and OPS28.65-14 (3rd soak test) https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77154821&postcount=304 despite what the patch notes day, they appear to be both 8.1.
No one's been able to capture the updates yet, though there is a call out for help: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77176543&postcount=315 but if that's not possible, then you're stuck on the update without any further updates unless you choose to perform a downgrade or wait for the official Oreo stock fastboot ROM to appear. I've no idea when that is.
Hi,
I just unlocked my X4 (XT1900-2) to try Magisk and all worked good.
Now, when I wanted to revert, I just installed the stock image using fastboot and adb.
After installing them and re-locking my bootloader I was not able to change my system status to Official(I installed Ryzen Kernel before).
Nor I am able to install any OTA to change it to Official, can anyone tell me how can I install OTA update and change my status to Official and be stock again.
Please help!!!

Can you provide the information of system flashed because if correct system has been flashed then the status should change to official. Try reflashing the system.

The system seems to be correct but its not official signed image so try to reflash the system or factory reset or try to get latest system signed image flash it and then check the status.
But many users have faced this problem even after flashing stock rom and relocking the bootloader they were unable to install ota.

Tried it again, but was not able to get it back to official.

You can try but make sure this stock rom is for xt1900-2 ,the other option is to wait till motorola releases signed images for the device ? or to visit the authorized service center they might flash the system and give your device back in official state.

Well, I can't take device to authorised service centre because my warranty is void now.
Can you tell me the estimated time till motorola releases signed images for my device?

Its upto motorola when to release the signed images for the device but you can try to flash system from the link

Select the payton image that has latest build and for safety i would suggest unlock your bootloader and try to flash the system .
Try to flash PAYTON_OPWS28.46-21-9 from the link it might help.

My device hasn't got the 8.1 update, I was on Oreo when I rooted. After installing the flash again, I am getting OTA Update but error is show.

Till now user of xt1900-2 have not received 8.1 all are on 8.0.0 latest update is of 1 october 2018 security patch.
Can you tell on what security patch is your device running.

I am not able to install 1 June 2018 security patch update.
Is there any problem with my A/B partition system?
Also, when I rooted my device, I was on 1 October 2018 patch.

so i guess you will have to wait till firmware is released with latest security patch because you have broken ota so only option left is to update device using fastboot . Did you get any error like pre-validation failed while returning back to stock ?
You won`t be able to install ota until your device status changes from modified to official.

I get error like system is modified/corrupt.
Should I flash xt1900-7, xt1900-6 or xt1900-1 version?
Also when I flashed xt1900-1 version, it showed me something like 'Mode has been set to logging' on Moto Logo

I have seen video tutorials in which they flashed android one firmware on retail but you will have to keep bootloader unlocked .But i would suggest you to flash custom rom if you keep bootloader unlocked atleast you will get additional features and once moto x4 recieves android 9 update then you might get official system image to flash via fastboot and return back to stock. Search on youtube for tutorials it might help you ?

But how will I update to Android Pie if installation fails again??!
Will Motorola release factory image for xt1900-2 then?

They might release the system images till then or you might get stock rom zip available the way oreo stock rom is available now so you will be able to update your device to android 9 via fastboot not by ota ?

Hey. I used this rom as well to move back to stock but OTA's work fine for me. Currently on the 1 Oct patch. I still get the warning message during bootup even if I relock it. But apart from that everything else works fine.
The only thing different I have done is use the flash script from the below linked thread. Not that it should have made any difference but you guys might as well try and see.

Have you re-locked your bootloader after flashing this script?
Did you use Linux or Windows?
I tried relocking but then the warning changes to that of a unsigned system image being used. Don't remember the exact wordings. So then I moved to back to unlocked bootloader.
I am using windows.
