Security Patch (2018-7) - Nokia 5 Guides, News, & Discussion

I received the update for this month here in Mozambique.
Last week I was having issues with proximity sensor, do they fixed it?
I'm going to flash it and I'll give you a feedback.

How do you resize the split screen?

That's easy. simply drag up the tab.

It's impossible for Nokia 5, since minimum required screen resolution for resizing the split screen is 1920x1080, whereas Nokia 5's screen resolution is 1280x720. He probably owns a different phone model

Yeah, I see it, but resizing the split screen is impossible for resolutions of 720p and under, your phone must have a bigger resolution than that

I don't agree with you. At the very least, you can change the heights of the screens. I actually tested it before posting, just to confirm, and I have 2 phones with 720p that it works for. There is a bar between both screens that you can slide up or down. Unless you mean something different when you're talking about resizing the screen.
Edit:
Ok I read up a bit and now I have a clearer picture. If in your display settings, your display size is to default or large, you won't be able to resize your screens, however if like me your display size is small, you can. I just tested

I've tested that now, it seems to work like that. Weird. But yeah, by default, you aren't able to resize the screen if your resolution is 720 and below

Yeah I reduced the dpi in settings. Maybe that's the case.

By the way did anyone else receive 2 updates this month? I got one last week (~130 mb), then I got another update (about 450mb) 2 days ago. I'm wondering what the second update is about

When you said that I went to check and in fact there was an update. I'm already downloading And it does not seem like much to me. They are improving system stability and enhancing the user interface. Only by testing in practice will we see what it is all about.

I can't find a difference yet. The launcher3 have square icons, but it may be old thing. I can tell since i use nova launcher. But 450 mb seems a lot, considering there a roms this size.

[Q] Setting per app DPI - How?

TP with CM9 Nightlies
Does anyone know how to set the DPI for a specific application? I want to run the system UI at 160 and a single app at 120 DPI. I've seen this done on other devices/roms, but not on CM9 -w- TouchPad.
Thanks in advance

Those are tablet ui type ROMs for specific devices like my Galaxy S2 that has a tablet ui option... seriously before asking something such as this pretty much proves you didn't bother to read even the opening posts of ANY of the ROMs here in the forum which needless to say is pretty lame

Good morning to you too. While I always appreciate help and guidance where I can get it, I do not appreciate condescension. I have read the opening posts on many of the ROMs. I did not see where it says "All your DPI questions go here". Also, I've posted on the ROM threads and PM'd a ROM dev but not received any answer yet.
My mom is going into surgery and then a lengthy hospital stay. I gave her a tablet so she can a bit more comfortable and entertained while stuck in bed for weeks. I am trying to figure out how to fix this one app's display before she goes in.
I ask you a favor, what is my best shot at getting a specific answer? Your expertise would be much appreciated.

It's that blasted "Words with Friends". She's hooked.
You can't see the chat portion of the app at 160 DPI, you can see it at 120 DPI but then the rest of the TP's UI is too small for her. So I'm looking to get just WWF at 120 while leaving the rest of the Tab's DPI at 160.
Is this something that has to be cooked into the ROM?
Any ideas?

Of course, its an app I dont use. lol. I've never heard of changing the DPI for each app. But maybe you can change it to a DPI somewhere in the middle. I use 140 and it looks great. I've heard changing the DPI can break the play store, but I have never had a problem with it.
Also, I've seen some apps that dont fit on the screen like you describe. Does it do that in both landscape and portrait mode? The ones I have seen only do that in one orientation.

I have tried 132 and 140 only 120 shows all the UI. And it's hard-wired to go landscape on the tablet. I tried to get it to go Portrait with no joy.
Dagr8 over on the SG Note threads has made a "Per App DPI" ROM which is very cool. I want to do the samehting on the TP but I did not know if it was a ROM thing or just knowing where to set the DPI thing; example in "build.prop" file.

Simple answer... the function is not available for the TouchPad and only available for a select FEW devices (phones) as there really isn't a need for the function considering the size of most tablets... you can stop looking or stressing waiting for an answer as that's pretty much it..... its a great feature on my SGS but convincing a dev to do the work for a tablet is quite a task

That looks like its specific to that ROM. It modifies the build.prop file as well as adds a hyb.prop file which controls the different app DPIs. I'm not a dev so I wouldnt know how to add that to the TouchPad. But it looks like it might be possible. That would be awesome to have that modified for the TouchPad though. Especially since our DPIs are all over the place. But as it stand now, I dont think we have that option.

Most 12 year olds have to clean their room before they can go out to play. This can make some of them angry and bitter. Just remember they are mad at their mom, not you.
As an adult and experienced tecnophile, I am humored by their social ignorance. I take solace that the real world will kick them in the "you-know-what" someday.

Looks like they removed the 1440 option. Its gone for me too.
Yep ... it's gone!
Reinstall the earlier leak? Glad i kept it.
I had crash issues with a new update like a weekago. They probably removed that to fix the issue. Install the YouTube apk that had it before it got removed.
Not even worth downloading the old APK.. at this time. 1440 videos are so rare at the moment. Besides, the new update fixes the resolution selection bug. So I'm happy with the status quo . When 1440 becomes more mainstream I'm sure it will be back. For now, I have no need for it.

About to go for a nexus 6 but some issues are keeping me from doing it

I've had pretty much every nexus device, but last year I decided to get myself an Iphone 6, but I really missed android, so I'm about to get the nexus 6 but some issues are keeping me from doing it, I've read quite a few reviews and I'm concerned about the following issues:
1. Why is the camera so slow to take pictures? You think it could improve in the future? That's probably the thing I like the most about the iphone 6, how good the pictures come and how the camera is blazing fast
2. Is it true that the device is slower than the nexus 5? Have updates improved this situation? My nexus 5 already stuttered with Lollipop, Ive read quite a few reports about the phone slowing down and lagging for no apparent reason (except for maybe the quadHD killing the cpu/gpu)
3. How true are the reports of screen burn in?
4. How do non google apps and icons look? I imagine pretty bad since facebook or instagram's icons haven't even been updated to take advantage of a 1080p screen
5. Is it true that the device has slow storage a step down from the nexus reading and writing speeds?
Thanks for your help

The actual act of taking a picture is fast, its just focusing that is slow. If you focus manually or fixed, it will take pictures amazingly fast.

Where are you coming up with these questions? The only icon I've seen that actually looks bad, is the one for my bank... and it looks bad on ANY screen. Screen resolution is not so tightly tied to "icons" -- bigger screen = more icons. Also, Nexus 5 was already a 1080p display. I also hardly consider this question to be meaningful. Who really cares what icons look like? The objective is to maximize USEFULNESS.

No. Flash storage is blazingly fast on this device, HOWEVER, the "default configuration" enables data partition encryption by force, which reduces the EFFECTIVE flash performance to nexus 5 level (which is still very good). Simple adjustment to a text file on the boot partition allows this to be disabled. It is also probable/possible that Google will be enabling hardware crypto on the next update.

I'm in agreement with @doitright. I can say nothing but good about this device. I do not have any of those issues nor know of any that do. As with any device though there are always some bad ones that an unlucky few receive. It does not make all of them bad just those. My phone is a beast. It outperforms the N5 by miles. Screen looks amazing. Icons to me look great I haven't come across a bad looking icon except that of my bank.... I guess banks hire poor developers idk. Storage is incredibly fast. Camera is fantastic. Fastest signal acquisition I've seen on any phone including GPS.
Eh. Entirely up to you what you want to do. I don't trust any reviews. I rather go with my own opinions/feelings on anything. You should too.

I'm awaiting this Thursday to grab one on VZ, coming from a Galaxy Nexus, anything I could get now would be a major update hardware wise, however the only exception I take is the last part of this, not trying so start anything, your other parts are spot on.
The current speculation is that 5.1 may go backwards on forcing software encryption, but nothing is confirmed there, see last paragraph:
http://www.slashgear.com/android-5-1-in-march-heres-what-may-be-coming-18369666/
If the Nexus 6 had the HW encryption on it, and I cant confirm it does, we're left with these options:
1 - they do enable it, which begs why it wasn't in the first place. Current rumor is that the qualcomm drivers for that engine are not open source, therefore it is a no no on android:
http://androidheadlines.com/2014/11...ency-likely-due-missing-qualcomm-drivers.html
2 - they tweak the software encryption, which if you check the threads, opinions really vary here. if you need to irk the absolute most out if it for read write, then undo it. But plenty of others have chimed in saying it wasn't that big an increase, i believe it to be what you may be using on the device that makes the difference, more intensive apps may cause the SW process to bog down, but in all, it is still fast.
3 - they disable it by default, which I wonder how that would be accomplished in an OTA, it would need to wipe the device I'm sure, but ...
4 - Lastly, if in fact they cant use the engine, or it wasn't included (doubtful, it has qualcomm in it) then you cant enable it by an OTA, end of that story.
Personally, if I grab the N6 this week, I plan on unlocking/rooting/removing VZ oem partition, but for the moment leaving encryption on, because 5.1 may drop in March, and then see how things are at that juncture.
It would be great if they could enable HW encryption, because we get that security and maintain read write offloaded from the CPU.
Lastly, I plan on trying to enjoy the thing, playing with it for at least an hour in store before taking it (you never know) because as most of us here are OC hehe, reading all the threads of issues before buying it is kinda a downer. I know I'm going to love it, having waited three years to update myself.

I congratulate you on finding a thread about an imaginary problem, and a "fix" for an imaginary problem.
There is a certain subset of people who will do anything, IMAGINE anything, to find a problem. Don't ask me why they are like that. Sucks to be them.

You can't do anything to increase the fuzzyness of an image, unless you actually stretch it larger. I.e., if it takes the same physical space on the screen, then increasing the DPI on the screen won't cause it to become more fuzzy -- it just won't increase in SHARPNESS with the display. Google has specifications regarding the dimensions of the icons, and these specifications have always included a "much larger" image than what will actually display on the screen. The icons actually get scaled down to fit. So really, don't worry about it. If you find an application with a ugly/fuzzy icon, complain to the application vendor, because they're the ones who made an ugly icon, not the platform.
I just can't stress enough, that this is a silly point to use to avoid a device.

I *absolutely promise you* that they WILL NOT eliminate the encryption requirement. Those "android one" devices are... really really cheap. It is likely that they don't force encryption simply because they are not up to the task.

I CAN confirm that it does. There is no question at all. It is part of all snapdragon SoC's since about S4.
1 - they do enable it, which begs why it wasn't in the first place. Current rumor is that the qualcomm drivers for that engine are not open source, therefore it is a no no on android:
http://androidheadlines.com/2014/11...ency-likely-due-missing-qualcomm-drivers.html

There are two sides to the use of encryption hardware with qualcomm SoC's; the first is the "blobs", and the second is the integration with Android and the Linux kernel. Specifically, qualcomm's hardware crypto requires changes both to the kernel (which is under GPL), as well as VOLD (which is under APL).
Obviously, to include the kernel part, that kernel part MUST be provided as source. There is absolutely no option here.
VOLD is the part of Android responsible for mounting and managing disks. It is under the Apache license, which means that technically speaking, it can be distributed without including source, HOWEVER, this is a Nexus from Google, which means that they really can't ship a blob in place of VOLD. It has to be possible to build VOLD from AOSP.
So here is what was going on; at the time that Nexus 6 first shipped, Qualcomm HAD NOT made the source for Kernel or Vold available on CAF. That made it *impossible* for Google to include, since they would have to provide kernel code on request, and require that AOSP VOLD actually build and work.
QUALCOMM HAS SINCE MADE THE SOURCE AVAILABLE!!!!
And, in fact, there are a number of devices for which CM actually builds and includes hwcrypto *right now*.
2 - they tweak the software encryption, which if you check the threads, opinions really vary here. if you need to irk the absolute most out if it for read write, then undo it. This isn't even a half solution, because even though it may seem to improve storage performance to an acceptable level, it has to nail the CPU while doing so.

4 - Lastly, if in fact they cant use the engine, or it wasn't included (doubtful, it has qualcomm in it) then you cant enable it by an OTA, end of that story.

Most definitely CAN be used. No question about it.

You could disable crypto now, and let it encrypt when the update rolls around. Disabling forced-crypto does not prevent you from using crypto now or later.
Lastly, I plan on trying to enjoy the thing, playing with it for at least an hour in store before taking it (you never know) because as most of us here are OC hehe, reading all the threads of issues before buying it is kinda a downer. I know I'm going to love it, having waited three years to update myself.

Keep in mind that the test unit in the store gets abused.
DIR,
Looked forward to your responses on my last post, and was not dissapointed, nice info there, especially "QUALCOMM HAS SINCE MADE THE SOURCE AVAILABLE!!!!"
so has anyone done a comparison between the hwcrypto'd CM versions and unencrypted yet?
Yeah, I know the store ones get abused, in the end it would be a N6 or a GS6 for me, and I just cannot go to touchwiz, no matter how toned down, I want pure android, and unlocking ability, etc. Kinda makes the choice or me hehehe.
Dammit VZ, if you just announce online ordering tomorrow ... grrr .....

I would guess deactivate to gain read/write speed increase now, if the update enables HW encryption then you would let it.
Oh, and that is the point - nothing is perfect, not the N6, nor the units that will come after it hehehe....

I said on *some* devices. I did not say that they were enabling it on Nexus 6.

Yep, I'm totally with you on that. My last phone was a samsuck.... NEVER again. I spent WAY too many hundreds of hours on kernel and device tree maintenance to get and keep that thing working adequately on CM... then Omnirom (omni is waaaaaay nicer than CM). After a year of ownership of that thing, got the wife a Hammerhead (nexus 5), and its been just so easy to maintain. Literally all I ever did with her phone was add root, busybox, and xposed (to kill a couple of the google services wakelocks). This time around, I wanted the thing to just freaking work already!!!! Only downside is that its a bit *larger* than I would have liked.

I don't think that you should buy from verizon, even if/when they sell it directly. It will likely be crippled and branded, at least to some extent. Buy it from tmobile or google play store, and all you need to do is throw your verizon sim card into it. I think I heard that sprint also does not molest it. Oh, it could also be purchased directly from motorola.
Just whatever you do, do NOT buy it from ATT. They DO molest and cripple it.

To gain RW performance NOW... DUH.
I'll be getting it from VZ, because I just don't have the spare $$$ to buy direct and place it on VZ.
ATT taught us that VZ will have to toss its bloat on the oem partition just like anyone else, so ... as far as branding, I think that may rub off like ATT's, but if not I plan on putting in a case anyway.
Now we have to wait another two weeks if the newest rumor is true ...

Display jello/wavy effect when scrolling!

Noticed this as soon as I setup the phone. I don't think I've ever seen an AMOLED panel do this. It's almost like it's refreshing each line of pixels too slowly/unevenly during a single frame?
Here's an album of images and video captured from 240 FPS video. View them one after another. The screen refreshes by starting in the bottom left corner and finishes the frame in the top right corner... the icons and text on each line of apps goes out of alignment as I scroll.
Text and elements on the screen stretches out when scrolling down, and smushes together when scrolling up. Straight lines look wavy when scrolling left or right as well!

Is this what you are talking about?
Lets hope they manage to fix this.. I wonder if this is related to hardware or just a software issues.. Guess we'll see when more custom roms and kernels come in.. other than that, could this issue be related to vsync or framerate?
Nah, its a FEATURE.....

I don't think so - that sounds like frame dropping, and I have noticed that too.

Hopefully software since it's the same panel as the 3T. I don't think it's vsync, because if that were disabled it'd result in tearing. I really have no idea what's going on.
On the up side, an assistant head moderator on the OnePlus forums forwarded this information to the developers... other people are complaining about this same issue there as well!

Still having this issue after today's OTA.

Same here. It seems to be a Software issue
---------- Post added at 17:04 ---------- Previous post was at 16:38 ----------
To be Precise the upper part of the screen reacts slower. The thing that makes me nervous is that it's the same Spot when using horizontal.
Anyone can check if this issue is also when scrolling in twrp, if yes it's a Firmware issue or even Hardware.
If this was a Software issue we would see a Glitch while scrolling but it's a smooth Jello effect
I've did couple of Tests. And it seems it's the screen itself and not the Software. As recording the screen with an App will not show the issue. I hope it can be fixed with a Firmware Update.
We need an Update for the amoled screen driver.
Thank god I'm not the only one noticing that straight away. It pretty much ruined my experience since I got this phone. At first a thought its just me beeing OCD again and checking the screen for failures far too often.
It's hard to not see it when scrolling and it is very irritating!
Like a Jello / Wobble / Warping effect.
This needs to be addressed asap! If I Google this issue, it comes up a thread on OnePlus forums "The first thing I did when I got my OnePlus 5, I immediately installed the ... screen starts moving before the top half, giving a "jello" effect when ..".If I click on it, it says "OnePlus Forums - Error
The requested thread could not be found".
Seems like they removed the thread?
If the issue isn't getting worse when underclocking cpu&gpu with Ex kernel it's sure no Software issue. Then it's rather Hardware or Firmware (Panel driver)
But I simply can't imagine an amoled screen having such a Hardware issue.

It's the same panel (better say a variant of the panel), but what people don't know is that it seems it's mounted inverted on the OP5. So this wobbly effect seems to manifest more because of this condition.
I noticed this when evaluating some stuff on the source code I could backport to the 3T.
Let's hope it's just a weird overlay panel calibration or something similar and not a processing issue from design choices.
Only time will tell.

Problem is that time is limited due to the 15 days return period
Oh my.... I'm not experiencing anything like this... I'm sorry guys :/
EDIT: I have this effect also, but very minor. The 15-day return starts on delivery, or on ordering date? (So if i ordered the phone on the June 21st, this return thing will expire at July 6th?)

Exactly i can't take that chance they may or may not fix this issue or are they just going to sweep it under the carpet and pretend no one noticed, One thing is for sure if i decide to keep it and they don't resolve this awful screen latency, scrolling, stuttering lag this will be my 1st and last OP phone, it shouldn't have even come to market with this issue.
The panel is mounted inverted?! WTH?! The OP5 will be the new OP2 at this rate.
oh my.... i receive mine today in possibly a few minutes.... U people are making me more and more regretting buying this thing.....

I know! It's getting worse every second I'm on this forum... I wonder if maybe this is a batch set thing or if this is a region thing. I haven't read through the whole thing. But, if my screen has a weird effect like this which I will now watch for, I'll report it here.
****s gonna hit the fan when most people will be receiving them this and next week, hope they've fixed it by then before their customer support has a meltdown.

The MIX 2S...

The rumor mill in full swing yet again.
https://www.phonearena.com/news/Mi-Mix-2s-leaks_id102401
Check those pics people. Interesting choices by Xiaomi? If there's any validity to this, it could be the next evolution of the bezel-less craze, short of putting front cam under the screen, or ditching it altogether (which will never happen).
Just as intriguing to me is the notion of a sub-display fingerprint reader. The would mean an OLED screen as well, which would move the MIX series even closer to perfection in my opinion.
Rumor also states that this stuff would be revealed sooner rather than later, likely right before or around MWC. I'll definitely be following along closely. I love my MIX 2.
Yeah, have seen it too. Listen up, I do not have a much trust about fingerprint reader on display yet. Kudos to Synaptics, but it still needs getting fine-tuned. Plus from day to day factor I will probably find no reason for upgrade. This phone has almost perfect params. The cam is sorta bummer a bit but that aint a big bother, at least to me. Perhaps I will change mi mind but right now I don't think so.
I wish they would just remove the selfie camera and give me a 100% StB ratio phone. I don't need it. But I know their target demographics do.

Secondig this. I am no selfie material either but I understand that especially youngsters take them.
Looks good however, won't have much developer support just like the current mi mix 2. Too bad!!

On the other hand there's been at least a couple of. I would go for one being close to stock with no big bummer. If that happens with Oreo, I am done. I don't need 25 custom roms. But I understand how difficult it gets for our devs.
Currently rocking RR on my MIX2 and couldn't be happier. Agree with @enzo_cz who cares about a million different ROMs, as long as you have a few solid options.
But I do miss the OLED screen quality of my previous OnePlus5. LCD is so washed out now to me.

And I'll be buying what ever new mix comes out.
I just love these phones. The first more than the second.
