Dev Request - Screen Rotate in Show Mode - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just received the 5.6.2.0 update with Show Mode. I looks nice but I just realized that the screen orientation for Show Mode is fixed to only one horizontal position (power, volume and charging port to the right). I (and I assume many others) have a case that I bought from Amazon that puts these controls on the left. Thus, the Show Mode screen is upside down when the case is used as a stand. Maybe this is how Amazon figures to sell a bunch of those Show Mode docks.
Anyway, if any of the XDA developers here can take a look and see if there is a way to flip the screen, it sure would make a lot of folks happy!! Thanks!!

You can use rotation control that you can download from google play

I tried several of those and they are good for what they do, but Show Mode is a unique situation. The rotation controllers can rotate to sensor (Show Mode overrides), they can lock to a specific orientation (when Show Mode is exited, the tablet is still locked in that orientation), or rotate on app (Show Mode is not an "app" so it's can't be selected as a controlling app). There is a pro version of one of the controllers that can control rotation based on a condition (charging, headphones, etc.) that might work when Show Mode is active, but that would have to be coded into that app.

Likely could be overridden with privileged access (aka 'root') which is not obtainable on most 7th gen devices (at present only HD 10). Request should be directed to Amazon where implementation, if adopted, would benefit a much larger community.

I thought about submitting a request to Amazon, but there are two reasons I haven't: 1) they want to sell lots of docks and 2) even if they did decide to implement it, it generally takes months from that point until we see a release that contains it.
PS - Amazon made a conscious decision to lock the orientation in Show Mode rather than relying on rotation sensors. I'm sure this was done to support the Show Mode dock (sold separately). I have a 3D printer and I'll just print out a simple stand that will accommodate my tablet with its case. I'm sure that several other companies will be selling these too.

[Q] Why no horizontal lock screen on Xperia Z1?

For a phone that ships with a dock that is specifically designed for the phone to slide in horizontally, you would think they would take a few hours and design a lockscreen that can be used while docked. I mean they did it for the launcher and pretty much the whole OS (not while in landcape mind you, but specifically for use in dock mode), and that must be much harder both programmatically and design-wise. So why is there no dock-mode lockscreen? Honestly this truly baffles me.
Xperia Z did the same, and that also shipped with a dock. When are they going to learn that we do not want to look at our lockscreens sideways when docked?
For the record CyanogenMod doesn't do this, it has a dock-mode for both launcher and lockscreen.
amen!

i agree since i use the MHL link on my Z1 w/my 24" LCD and hate how the main home screen is portrait even when connected via MHL. however as a workaround, i bought the app called "Rotate" for about $2 and well worth it! lets me rotate homescreen adn lockscreen and do per app if wanted. just trying to figure out how to get the TV Launcher to flip since i have my MHL plugged in and in turn phone is upside down even though output to TV is fine.
Actually, there is a lock screen in landscape mode. It is just not used for some reason.
To see it briefly, you can start the camera without unlocking the phone (from the lock screen or with the hardware button). Then, touch the small image of existing picture to go to the gallery mode. Now, the phone is locked and will display the lock screen before going to the image gallery. Since it is on the landscape mode, you will briefly see the lock screen and can even manage to type a digit or two if you are fast enough. Unfortunately, then it changes to the usual portrait mode no matter what.
So they actually implemented the screen but are not using it. Can't see the logic of that, really.

Homescreen Orientation

With such a huge screen, why didn't Google allow the home screen to display in landscape orientation? While I have never wanted this functionality before, it seems like it would be great here. I'm assuming there's no way to do this without root?
You can... download a third-party launcher such as Apex Launcher or Nova Launcher. You can find them on the play store and then make the launcher to be landscape mode or portrait based on the orientation of the phone.
If you want this feature with google now launcher then there is no way to achieve this, not until Xposed is made to work using ART
They had to follow Apple this time. The iPhone 6 plus has this feature due to larger screen.

yep huge annoyance, especially since 1) iphone (!!!) now allows this and 2) google themselves allow it on android tablets
The launchers rotate, but the navigation and notification bars don't. Or at lease I have not been able to figure out how to make them do so. I know a custom ROM will fix this at some point, but part of the reason I bought this phone was to use as a micro tablet.

Setting 7th gen Fire tab up as SmartHome wall mounted dashboard - lockscreen problem

Hello,
i'm currently planning on using a 7th gen fire 7 and a 7th gen fire HD 10 as wall mounted dashboard for SmartHome experiments.
Home is not too smart at the moment, it's mainly about a convenient control for philips hue lamps, but would be nice to be scalable in future.
My current setup uses ImperiHome (here) to deliver dashboard and control.
A combination of Tasker, Motion Detector and Secure Settings to detect motion and activate the display automatically (here)
As for the differences between the tablets:
the fire 7 is on fire OS 5.4.0.0 and hence not rootable and not downgradable to a rootable version at the moment, correct?
the fire HD 10 is on fire OS 5.6.0.0 and rooted.
Current main problem is the lockscreen.
My motion detection activates the screen but only reaches the lockscreen..
i've done some googling (no-lock apps, terminal commands, tasker tasks) but up to now i haven't found a way around it.
My wish would be to just disable it - any ideas??
Alternatively i'm looking into the idea of displaying an app all the time, which will avoid standby like a fullscreen clock. (here)
Unfortunately i'm afraid of killing the tablet quickly when it is always on.
Is there a way to switch of the background illumination and display without sending the tablet to sleep/lock/standby mode?
Second (less important) i want to automate the charging with an Osram smart plug +, which the tablet shall activate via a tasker task when it needs recharging and deactivate when full. Haven't looked into that yet but i thought in case someone got a tutorial at hand it would be great!
Thank you very much!
Hi, Have a look at the Fully Kiosk Browser APK on Google Play, check out Home Assistant forums search for Fully Kiosk Browser some information how its been used with that system.
Thank you for the advice! I've already spent some time in those forums. Up to now I'm trying to avoid an additional home assistant raspberry..
So I'd like to use the imperihome dashboard instead of a web based browser dashboard..
But I'll try to see whether I can use the anti-lock function of fully somehow!
How about Developer Options -> Stay Awake ? (google how to enable developer options if you don't have that enabled already)
I've not used Fully yet, but what I understand from the description, you can use the tablet camera as motion detection, switch screen on and load any app,
Yes that's correct, even with a sleeping tablet.
Unfortunately if it was "sleeping" with screen off it will start the target so "behind" the swipe away lock screen...

But I'd like the display to turn off..
I don't have a fire tablet to try this, the dim function in full will turn the brightness down to 0, and when monition is detected by the camera it brightens back up.

This works on all apps
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.refy.android.g8x.widemode
This is seriously very impressive. Nice work, only issue is it breaks the navigation bar and won't come back regardless if changing between gestures or normal navbar. Only fix is a reboot.
It does crash frequently inside an app.

hi, are you the developer of this awesome wide mode enabler?
If so, is it possible to enable dual screen working when folded completely (360 deg) same as lg g8X. i guess screen turns off when the magnetic latch (hall sensor) detected.
Also, possible to turn on dualscreen, switch/swap between screens, through tasker integration? disabling on-screen buttons

Yes, thank you using!
- May not possibe to enable dual screen while 360 deg. Framework checks cover state internally, ignore power on message when cover fully opened.
- Turn On or Off dualscreen through tasker integration is possible.
- Switch or Swap screen can use only activities from same package if non privileged apps. Could not possible Switch/Swap from Tasker integration.

Is it optimized for dual notch in wideview?
This app is wonderful! It works for my LG v50, but I have one problem, the wide mode screen is smaller than my phone's screen, leaving black borders. Is there any way to fix this?
Sorry I mean when it crashes in app its due to say keyboard opening, or clicking on a link. I don't think it's to do with the app, just which LG allows you to modify. Like, without root do you think its possible to have widemode on all time even when switching between apps or will we have to always open a widemode using the toggle. It be awesome if you could remap the activity to a button such as Google assistant button or include in floating menu LG has. Or swipes up from navigation bar.

That's not what I meant. The app itself doesn't fully fit either the dual screen or the main screen, it's smaller than both. It leaves borders around the bottom of the dual screen and the right of the main screen, as if the app is too small to fit the display. Perhaps Android 10 will fix some of these issues.
Does anyone have the APK for this? I'm wanting to try it on the Asus ROG Phone II second screen attachment just to see if it might work, and can't find the apk anywhere, or get it to download.

No you cannot. Asus uses different developer kit for twindock. LG & Asus apps aren't cross compatible to each other. Asus dual screen games also didn't work the same on LG
And this app uses LG's own implementation (which is very new, not yet published in public for developers)

Even newer updated v50 with wideview mode?

Few things i noticed after upgrading to Android Q

I made a post after getting pie update and now, here is an in-depth list of features of android Q in ZMP M1
all phones are not getting the same features
removing screen lock /fingerprint doesn't save you from password after update (at least it didn't work for me ) make a backup of everything in case you need to reset
list of things I'll suggest making a backup
WhatsApp chat
google photos
apps with es file explorer or any such file manager
settings + contacts+ call log+ messages from settings backup
notification led :
I like to turn it off all the rime even when charging but in android Q I couldn't find any way to disable it during charging
i was checking my old post about pie
1. Ambient Display : settings>display>advance>Ambient Display
It works only when you get a notification (its dope would like it being enabled always) though Daydream nowhere to be found.

so ambient display is gone screensaver is back (edit: its renamed and moved to display lock screen area as new notification toggle)
volume panel:
change volume click more slider button and this is how to devolve UI it shows a big screen covering prompt to show sliders
font in developer settings only two options device default seems better
no third-party launcher supports the new gesture navigation but it is a problem on google's part
left earphone to week? there is audio balance in assessability settings
vibratin and haptic feedback in assessability
not the true dark mode in assessability settings dark theme and color inversion options are nearby enough to test what we could have got for dark mode
dark mode doesn't get turn back to a light mode in live wallpaper
assessability volume key shortcut might come in in handy for some but it makes a notification sound
there is charging sound and vibration in sound settings might want to turn it off, I have seen Samsung charging sound but Asus just makes the phone vibrate with a faint sound might scare people who don't know as it's on by default in android q
I am getting the rotate once button in navbar when autorotate is off I am using two-button navigation and a small circle when using gesture
the lockdown option to prevent unlock by any other means now also prevents notification to show can be enabled in display>lock screen display> show lockdown option
in gesture navigation you can swipe up and continue in an app to make it go smaller beyond it should go
to start android it asks for setup screen lock password it is stepping in the right direction but we should have it in kernel/bios as once entered in recovery mode anyone can reset a phone
QR code to share wifi available
still no way to monitor or block devices connected to your hotspot
default Bluetooth name QCOM-BTD Qualcomm's BLE chip?
widgets to settings shortcut there should be system UI tuner after opening it shows this funny warning message
apps notificatio>notification snoozing useless button more useless because cant see snooze option in youtube notification
battery saver got new auto turn off at 90% feature
battery picture in battery settings seems thick would prefer "ampere app" like stats in later versions
display don't have color temperature adjust
accelerated location something about data storage and data concent
high accuracy, battery saver, etc options for location not available
google play system update is 1 January 2020 please update it
security patch is 5nov 2019
privacy section is great but would like fingerprint prompt in autofill scenario as like for wifi sharing
digital wellbeing well let's skip it as I already have 18 unlocks 1 hr30 mins in the settings app and will have 4hr+ in youtube so let's skip it
verificatin code auto fill in google settings I something nice to have but also worrying
now you can directly launch apps from app info after force stopping
in about phone >emergency info> medical info you can add your profile pic and emergency contacts
dev options> picture color mode sRGB does this option even work any were?
in dark mode theme when searched in settings there is a white padding
dev options> game driver properties I don't know what it does perhaps boost graphics performance
feature flags section in dev options shows nothing except experimental (edit: these were removed in Q beta 3)
system traces have many options like pre CPU buffer and in the category, it has some tick box options and possibly CPU performance after we stop getting updates
swipe up to recent in any navigation option seem a bit too sensitive
audio seems of though I only watched youtube (Linus tech tips) so far that is without headphones
in dev options audio Bluetooth codec shows APTX HD and other option which might make Bluetooth audio great
in dev options profile HWUI seems new but not sure what it is the bars shown on-screen seems familiar
in dev options adaptive notification priority makes no difference and doesn't have any description but a quick google search shows it is supposed to make low notification priority genital
in dev options apps can be installed in external storage option
in dev options force activities resizable doesn't work in split-screen view but I may be doing something wrong
also I hate the lock icon when unlocking also there is no center icon with face/fingerprint or padlock in lock screen
in dev options wifi entending option might help in office or home to extend wifi if it works
in dev options enable freeform windows doesn't work
in dev options forced desktop scant be tested as no video output but wireless display might allow haven't tested
in dev options I enabled bubble notification will add things that can access it
in dev options auto fill section is too vague and I am not getting what anything does
in the last pie post I said

widevine changed to L3 its used to stream Amazon Prime Video, BBC, Hulu, Netflix, Spotify, and Disney+ use Widevine DRM to manage the distribution of premium content. as a college student who has no job and already has to spend money on Jio internet I don't have any above-mentioned subscriptions and if you do use any services according to other beta testers you won't be supposably able to access them while in beta.
camera app
in pro mode no shutter speed control option
max iso in pro mode is 1600 like in HMD global camera
auto video encoder is h264
portrait mode has extremely bad edge detection
night mode isn't that good
no fps option for video like 24,25,29.98,30,60 fps etc
no raw support in stock camera app resulting in assumption camera2api isn't enabled by default, though I enabled it in pie and it carried forward maybe so I am not sure.
it is a bit long but if you are reading this then thanks for reading till the end I'll format the whole thing later

Gestures are enabled by Google after December security patch nova / most other launchers work with gestures. You can however use 2 button and 3 button navigation perfectly.
About that dark and black mode difference we don't have an amoled or led display it's an lcd so it won't make difference in battery but kind of personal choice. I like dark more than black.
The thing about wallpaper and dark thing - in android 9 dark/light theme was set by wallpaper color so live wallpapers needed to support color picker api to tell the device to keep light or dark theme. (it was half broken by asus as selecting dark theme should've disabled the api completely, but using pixel default live wallpapers they had that api so dark mode worked with them).
That srgb was being considered by Google they dropped it as it broke a lot of the things.
You can resize top and bottom windows just hold the middle line in centre and drag it where you want to put it. (I use 400 dpi so I get more steps).
It's because that feature is intended towards large screen tablets or foldables and Samsung made their own thing, (the free form window thing).
It's for devs making password manager apps or autofill apps those people need it for debugging, the logging levels are to make reports to find bugs, the max request is how many times in one field the autofill will attempt to fill in credentials. The max visible dataset is if you have multiple accounts to one app (take Gmail as example) so while trying to autofill it lists all of available accounts to show (I'm not an expert in this so I maybe wrong if needed confirm that.
About sound issue it is very real and use some good quality earphones or compare side by side with 060 running device.
