I am getting my mi 8 this week.
I have knowledge on installing custom rooms many years ago but I've been out of the scene for a couple years. I'm thinking of installing pixel experience on the mi 8 but was wondering if there's anything I should look out for with all the security features added to android like factory reset protection and storage encryption. I have a p20 pro currently that is completely stuck on a beta rom with no way to roll back or upgrade the firmware due to FRP protection. I don't want to lock down another phone but I highly doubt I will like MiUI as I prefer stock android.
Any heads up will help me greatly thank you ??

Mi 8 has antirollback protection so yeah you should check your antirollback level and never flash a rom with lower level than yours.
Custom roms doesnt have antirollback protection levels...
And yes you can easily flash roms like pixel experience
So after a few days scrolling through the forums, i realised that TWRP is not working on Pie update and it only works properly on Oreo Mi A2. I also realised that you can switch A2 to 6X and mod it using 6X TWRP etc2
Now I want to ask if you would recommend me to =
- Downgrade to Oreo
or
- Switch to 6X?
If i can, i would like to revert to stock so that i can still have my device under warranty (5 week old btw)
Not, Pie better, Miui 10 bagss

On my opinion, don't attempt to downgrade your OS because it may hard brick your phone. If you succeed downgrading, you may experiencing some hardware problems, such as WiFi, Bluetooth and etc. Google intent to disabling OS downgrade since Oreo (Anti Rollback Protection). About 6X MIUI ROM version, this considering as rooting your phone and Xiaomi are not recommending side loading the ROM. If you really don't want Android One Program (hating and can't wait to fix bug's like me), Custom ROM's maybe recommended for you which is offer on some forum threads. But I rather wait for the next future update from Xiaomi and I know they'll fix the flaws of this phone. And of course I don't waste my opportunity to experience free update on upcoming Android Q!
Oreo is ok the best, if you have unlocked bootloader and critical you can downgrade with no problem at all. I have done it after buged pie and other times after custom roms.
I have switched my A2 to 6X for so long now that I can't even remember. I see no point in going back to A2. All custom roms for 6X are much simpler to flash and handle. No dual partition bull****. Plus I can flash miui anytime I want either. I personally see no advantage of A2.
Come to the dark side. Convert to a 6X.

The last line is really tempting. I've been considering converting my Mi A2. Have you experienced any bugs after converting, in MIUI or in custom roms? Perhaps the camera bug?
Also, which rom are you currently on? Any bugs?

Essentially both phones are the same so bugs are almost non-existent. You know I've noticed some people complain about the camera bug but I am yet to encounter it, and its been months. But I always depend on gcam so maybe this is only on if we try to use the stock cam. Even if the issue arises, there's a definitive fix by changing the build.prop to whyred (I think).
I'm currently on Havoc 2.2. I think its the most flexible and customisable rom for our device. Of course you can try miui first and then come to AOSP based roms. One persistent bug in AOSP based roms is that notification light doesn't work (for me at least) and I've come to live without it. Auto brightness may glitch but fixes are pumped out fast enough. So far I have no reason to go back to A2 stock.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2/how-to/how-to-enabling-cam2-gcam-android-t3868766
I enable cam2api from above method. how can i disable it now? since i would very much like to use Stock cam as selfies in GCAM are horrible
please advise
Title. I flashed another rom on another phone a while ago and unlocking it was relatively easy, but I read here that you need to *request* unlocking for the mi max 2 via your Mi Account. Is all that necessary to install havoc? another question I have is how similar is it to miui? Can you use the Themes app? or is it just gone then? I just don't know if I should go through aaaaaaaall the process just to jump to Android 9. I just wanna play a game that requires Android 9+, and the device currently shows as incompatible cause miui 11 is 7.1.1 based.

Yes you need to request unlock permission from Xiaomi to unlock bootloader and you would have to use your Mi Account. Havoc os is Aosp based rom so there isn't Themes app but you can use substratum for theming. And there are 2 other files you need to flash along with rom - quick charge fix and in call volume fix. If you are doing it just for a game, i don't recommend. Also the unlocking permission will take a couple of days. Plus the audio in pie roms is crackling in some roms so you will have to use Viper or Dolby and tune the settings for better audio.
Hey there hello
So I've been playing around with custom roms for a 1.5 year. I think I have enough experience and now I'm starting to get interested in mods and ports
Idk much about that and I just want to start asking how do I install the Xiaomi stock camera app in my Redmi Note 10 Pro with a custom ROM installed on it.
Also if anyone can explain me what does been "ported" mean thanks

May a ROM developer can help you.
But it's really difficult to get MIUI cam working in non MIUI Roms.....

Ported/Porting/Ports means a specific software that only works on selected devices and giving it support to work for other devices.
In the case of your question, Xiaomi Cam, or MIUI Cam, is the default camera application for Xiaomi devices tunes by Xiaomi themselves and only works for Xiaomi devices, with specific features for each devices.
ANX Camera is the port of MIUI Camera that works for Custom ROM and some non-miui based OS. ANX is a Magisk Module too meaning you'll have to root your phone to install systemlessly. Link to the download:

I recommend you to use v204 even though it's an alpha release to get the closest camera quality similar to stock. If that doesn't work, try the stable release which are 190R or 185R.
