I have googled this but all the solution I find are either to factory reset or re-flash your firmware. I'd really like to avoid that.
I have a Z3 compact, rooted and then flashed with the latest firmware I think its the .77 at the end.
Xposed framework with a few mods running beautifully on it.
The last 3 changes I did before the phone got stuck in the boot loop:
- updated minmin xposed module from 1.8.1 to 1.9
- updated another module but forgot its name
- fiddled with the settings of this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.namelessrom.devicecontrol
I'm pretty sure its the latter as it sets certain kernel parameters at reboot.
Can anyone give me instructions on how to disable this app from booting or how/where to find it and delete it?
Where can I find logs of this boot loop?
I really want to avoid re-flashing, re-rooting, re-flashing and restoring my backup again as that will take half a day.
I've just brought back mine from bootlooping after I've installed several extensions (just discovered that the culprit was DonkeyGuard) and I'm about to do it for the second time, by flashing a Xposed-Disabler-Recovery.zip file that's stored either in the root of your phone or at
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/de.robv.android.xposed.installer/files/Xposed-Disabler-Recovery.zip
But that would only work in case you messed it up with Xposed.
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind if I encounter this problem again.
Still finding it hard to believe there's no other reply to a seemingly common problem / question, does everyone just pack up and factory reset when boot looping?
Well, it's as common as people repeating to make a nandroid backup, you know
Btw, before I will flash yesterday a black theme (modded system files), I made the backup, so when my Z3C got stuck in a bootloop for the third time, I had nandroid ready. Such a shame, I really liked that mod.
If the kernel is problem, how about just reflashing your kernel?
Believe it or not, I started looking into nandroid backups today already made my first tests.
Until now I relied on titanium backups but that still makes me do a factory restore before I can restore stuff from those backups.
But the issue is, I am not looking for better "protection" I'm trying to find out how I can fix something minor like this i.e. via adb and command line...
Talking about a custom kernel, is there one? I have a rooted xperia z3 compact and wouldn't mind checking out a different kernel but I held back unlocking my bootloader until there is a custom ROM available that can fully replace my rooted stock ROM.
If love to get PAC man ROM for my phone.
I had the same issue, but by using 3C toolbox (similar to the app you've mentioned).
In my case putting back the original build.prop into /system via ADB fixed the bootloop.
As for custom kernel, you can try AndroPlus kernel HERE
@ovizii as @davebugyi said, you could always put some files back via ADB, but you need to have a file that you want to put back, like in davebugyi's case an original file. In your case you don't have it, so unless you know what value you changed, there is nothing much that you could really do with ADB access.

Hm, I was thinking along the lines of accessing log files, like a system log file, check what went wrong, i.e. auto start of a certain app, or setting of kernel parameters at boot time, then remove the offending apps/entries?
Just not sure if that's possible, hence this question here
Checking out the suggested ap and the kernel! Thanks!
Good evening and sorry if post a thread of which I see two similar oness
However, I could not find a solution in the other ones and have questions which go a little further and really hit my privacy.
I have two XZ3 and both could go into recovery node when I bought them and after a while could not.
I used the reset to factory seting fo wiping cache etc. quite regularly as I had/have reasons to belive that I was/am spied on.
Sice the recovery mode possibility is gone I feel totally unsafe with both phones.
I tried all possibilities I can find of this website or any other in internet, and all were without success.
As described by others, after pushing the power button, there is no led light and it boots suoer-quicklyto the blue stripe view in which we wait till the boot is complete.
Till two days ago I thought ok, the phone just needs a flash, wipe everything away once and all would be resolved.
Well, two days ago I flashed my phone the first time from lollipop to kitkat, which worked without problems and then rooted it with gifroot and then put back lollipop.
Everything ran smoothly and after the whole process I had a rooted lollipop version with a working recovery. I tried the apps which confirm if the root works abd everything was great.
Tthe morning after, however the recovery possibility was gone. The phone was still rooted for everything, but for recvery mode.
I tried several apps, which I gave superuser access with SuperSu, but even from the apps the boot goes always just the NORMAL way without recovery.
To give it another try today I flashed that xz3 again, then rooted it with Kingo root, which in Kitkat firmware worked lalso super easy, the checked with other apps whihchconfirmed that the root works, but still no recovery possibility, no matter with which app..
I really need a specialist who can explain that to me, as I am going mad to think that someone else has total control over my phones.
How realistic is that some spyware does not allow the recovery as of course it knows that it would be eliminated then.
Please give me your thuoghts or knowledge. Everything helps. And if you know a method with which I can be sure that nothing is keft on the phone, I would appreciate.
Thanks and Regards

Spyware cannot affect Recovery unless it is granted root permissions and is embedded on system.
Also do not use KingoRoot, a thread in the SG note 3 forums reported Spyware installed after using it, source. For now steer clear of that application until all claims have been proven false
At any rate, ( assuming you have Unlocked Bootloader ) just flash another kernel with recovery, do a full wipe including formating the system partition and restore your system via flashing a rom

If you can enter flash mode, flash the latest firmware and software for your device using flash tool.
What is flash mode? I can get the phone in a mode where the indicator lamp turns blue is it that?
get Flashtool @ https://xperiafirmware.com/flashtool/
it includes Xperiafirm so you can download a stock ROM for your device and build an .ftf file
when you have the ftf file, drag it into the main Flashtool window

Hello.
My motoG 2nd gen XT1064 just passed the warranty date about 2 months ago. I'm on marshmallow 6.0, and bootloader is currently locked and running stock rom.
Yesterday I rebooted my phone for the first time in about 1 month. Upon startup, after the moto boot screen, a box popped up with "Android is starting.... Optimizing app xx of XXX...."
I let the apps optimization take its course, (about 15-20 minutes) immediately afterwards the screen turns black. Not off black, but backlight is on kind of black. Eventually after 5 minutes it reboots, and continues the same cycle over and over and over.
I let it do it overnight, uncharged, and eventually the battery died. I let it charge completely, started up the phone, deleted cache partition, but still the same problem.
I will attempt to wipe the phone from the recovery option, and hopefully that fixes it.
My question is
a) IS there any way to access the internal storage of phone via usb connected to my laptop while in bootloader screen and extract some important files and photos I did not get a chance to backup...
b) I plan on unlocking bootloader and rooting now that my warranty is done, but if I cannot get the phone running properly with the wipe/restore option, do I have to flash stock factory firmware before unlocking, rooting, and flashing something like CM?
Please be patient with me. I'm not computer illiterate, just very inexperienced with this stuff. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
To whom it may concern:
I went ahead and unlocked my bootloader, which wiped my phone clean.
Phone is working great now. My question is, is it worth to root the phone and install a custom ROM? I'm a novice, and these XDA forums are information OVERLOAD. So many different methods, opinions, ROMS, etc etc.
I think most people install CM13. Is there a noob friendly, comprehensive guide to rooting and installing CM13 the clean and proper way?

Hi,
I have a Nexus 6 with a shattered screen, and just bought another one to replace it (exact same model, XT1103 32GB).
I want to make a Nandroid dump of the old device by booting into TWRP temporarily, then restoring the backup to the new phone using the same method. Both phones are bootloader unlocked and totally stock (latest Android update).
Is there anything in particular that I should watch out for? Which partitions should I not touch - a friend on another forum suggested that I should not touch EFS?
Cheers,
Su
If you restore the efs from one to the other you'll loose your imei number on the second one

I've cloned a Nexus 5 but I'm not sure if it's the same way.... P.S. of course your not supposed to do it unless you own both phones... From what I've been told

Hi,
I don't want to mess about with the IMEI etc - I just want the same system settings, apps etc.
What partitions should I backup/restore? I guess just System, Data, Cache, Boot & Recovery should be enough?
Thanks,
Su
[edit] This seems to suggest just System, Data and Boot is ok - but is that all I need if I am restoring to another device?

Yes if they're on the same version. I cloned a 32 into a 64.
Ok I just tried this now, and it is not working...
The restore to the new device worked fine, but when I power up I get the "your device is corrupt screen" (which I think is normal if you use TWRP), but then after that it's just a blank screen...
The phone is still able to boot into bootloader and recovery (stock).
Any ideas what could have gone wrong please?
Thanks,
Suman
I think this might be something to do with encryption... when booting into TWRP the new phone still requires the encryption pin I set up from its original software....
Do I need to start again?
Ok, I flashed the new phone with the factory image and started again... this time, when I restore the backup it just hangs on the white Google logo screen...
Any help appreciated please!
Thanks,
Su
If your firs N6 was encrpted (default) there's no way to clone it. Android will generate different encryption keys etc.
Secure lockscreen is a big no-no too. With it, you can't even properly restore backup on the same device!
Trying to take the lazy way out is just asking for trouble. There are many things that can go wrong.
Also just a side note. Cloning devices is illegal, even if you own both devices. The was set by the cell phone cloning laws set up by the FCC.
Your best bet is just to reset it up from scratch.

Oh well,
I'm remembering what I did and I did not restore the Nandroid from Device A to Device B, I titanium Backup'd all the apps and moved them to TitaniumBackup folder on the new phone, restored from there.
For /sdcard/ I had to copy and paste it from one phone to the other...
I'm going to reply this to your reddit thread also.

Ah dang, so there is no way for me to do what I want then... that's annoying, I would have bought a different phone in that case!
I believe Google requires encryption to be active in all devices with Android 6.0.1 installed, so any new device you purchase will have this (non-) issue.
Think of the alternative however. You could always be dealing with Samsung and Knox.

I believe that is correct. All Nexus devices going forward will have the kernel force encryption. The only way around it is to format data in TWRP (completely wipe the phone) and then when you re setup your ROM (or even the stock image) just make sure you flash a custom kernel that doesn't force encryption (which pretty much all custom kernels don't) before booting into OS for the first time. I run mine unencrypted because nandroid backups are wayyyyy quicker without encryption. I know the security isn't as good but not a deal breaker for me.
I asked this question a while back when I was in the same situation, and was told that it's a bad idea.

It is a bad idea. Restoring any system files from one device to another is a risky game. I wouldn't even recommend restoring data from one device to another.
Start fresh, clean. No need to bring junk over, or risk issues. Takes 15 minutes to setup a phone how I like it after a clean rom flash. That's not a long time.
Last year I returned my N6 because of the peeling-back problem. I had a full TWRP backup on my laptop. I loaded it on to the replacement N6, renamed the backup folder to the new device id, and restored it. Worked perfectly, no problems.
Long story, but after travails with an Amazon-purchased Oneplus 9 Pro due to it being locked (T-Mobile!) and them refusing to unlock it....
I went to OnePlus and got myself a OnePlus 10 Pro Unlocked. Still have the T-Mobile sim, though.
My question....
I have been out of the rooted phone scene for some time. I had a Oneplus 2 rooted and a Samsung Note 4 and 5 rooted. But things are different now, I'm gathering. Plus this is a new phone and I don't want to toss away hundreds of dollars by bricking it.
I used TWRP back in the day. Flashed many a custom rom back then. But with this OnePlus, I already unlocked it which... is that the same as rooting it? And what are the benefits of rooting / flashing roms vs just going with what is currently on this US phone (Oxygen 13 but not 13.1 yet)? I kinda want to see TWRP on here, and back up my whole set up into files I can then copy to my computer(s) for safety's sake. At least I liked that feature when I had it w/ the OP 2 and others.
Trying to get back up to speed in the world of rooting as it stands now.
Thanks.
TWRP on this device is really, "make of it what you will." It doesn't fully support this phone officially, and the leaked versions don't support device decryption, so you'll be forced to not use a passcode on your phone.
You don't need TWRP anymore, you just need to be careful and know what you're doing. There's guides for every model here, although they're all basically the same. Try to avoid flashing anything from your PC to the phone, just flash inside Magisk and BOOT images.
From my knowledge the reason for this is there's hidden partitions from OPPO all over the filesystem and normal flashers don't take this into account, anyone just trying to flash a full zip has bricked.
Which leads me to, there's no full recovery for this device that's free. If you brick a file and end up boot looping both slots, you're gonna have to pay for a restore. Even with TWRP, from what I hear, full backups sometimes fail to restore properly on this device.
TL;DR Be careful, read guides, you'll be fine. Rooting (on this device, with a lack of full recovery, hence no custom ROMs or Kernels) is really just used for audio mods, photo mods like free google photos, extensive app mods, etc. If you're not actively looking into any of these, stock Android is pretty solid.

Thanks for this.
I got as far as unlocking the phone and installing Magisk. But haven't gone further until I understand what the next step is.
Can I root non-destructively? Or is the phone wiped?
If you're unlocked and have Magisk installed, rooting is as easy as booting a patched boot image, then using Magisk to install it to your boot image. You have the choice of finding a matching one in one of the guides or pulling your own from a full zip.
It must match the firmware revision, I know for a fact personally that region matters little in case of NE2215/3, as you're only doing a one time boot.
I recommend @g96818 's guide here, you can find almost every firmware's boot image posted there if you prefer patch it yourself using Magisk or just boot an already patched one.
I have a 10 Pro (NE2215) rooted as a daily driver using TMO US.
Unlocked means 2 things in the android phone scene. Either it's carrier unlocked and can take any sim from any phone company or it bootloader unlocked which is needed to root and load custom roms.
There aren't any custom roms for the 10pro because of the lack of a full recovery system. Basically the ability to force full flash a stock rom in case the custom ROM soft bricks the phone. So that leaves rooting as the reason to unlock your bootloader.
I suggest reading the guide for rooting this phone, it's relatively easy. TWRP is unnecessary as it doesn't offer much without custom ROMs. Also you should back up everything on the phone that you don't want to lose because during the rooting process a factory reset will occur (android safety feature).
