Face Unlock is too quick! (Not bashing it) - Huawei Mate 10 Guides, News, & Discussion

I'm on day 2 with this phone, I've just moved over from a Note 8 and so far loving it!
It's still early days and not sure if over time I'll regret my decision coming away from Samsung, after being with them for a last 3/4 years, but I fancied a change and got really annoyed with the battery life on the Note 8!
Anyway my post is about the Face Unlock on the Mate 10 Pro, which came via the OTA update, well its soo much better and quicker than my Note 8 that it's maybe a little too good! For instance I like that it detects me even when wearing sunglasses, the Note 8 didn't, but when I'm at work I put my phone on my Wireless Charger (I know this doesn't have wireless charging before anyone says anything, I'm just using it as a stand atm) and when I get a notification come through my phone unlocks ha!
I have the setting on so my phone screen lights up when a notification comes through, similar to iOS, along with face Unlock which is rapid, it just unlocks my phone!!
I'm not complain just surprised at the difference between the Note 8 and Mate 10 Pro!

Seems like you have the US model. What is the update that you have on phone.. I have the US version but no update yet. If you are on .119 can you confirm if night mode on camera is working.

Can you test if the phone unlocks with a photo. I remember reading somewhere it did. But Huawei was going to fix it

Mate 10 C636 on april update (.134) and I just tried face unlocking after having this phone for months, its super, super, incredibly fast. Works in dark areas but not super dark areas. I tried it on a dimly lit room and it worked, on a room with no lights it doesn't work because it doesn't use infrared.
I'm blown away by how fast it is.. I wanna bet $100 that this is so incredibly fast because the face detection is done by the NPU which is purpose built for stuff like this..

Yes snap, I just cannot get over how quick it is compared to the Note 8!! I've noticed it works well in low light too, but not completely dark!

You can change that it goes to homescreen automaticallybut you stay on lock screen. There is a setting that disables going to homescreen but still unlocks the phone. Then you only need to swipe to go to homescreen or double tap the notification.
I have that turned on because I like to check my Lockscreen before deciding whether I want to use the phone (see who texted before deciding whether I text back or ignore).
Additionally you can enable that the contents of your notifications are hidden unless your face is detected. This way you nosey GF won't be able to see your side chick texting you. Lol
edit: i never managed to fool it with a photo. tried many times.

Fast but not accurate
As a camera with nothing else its so quick but I've got problems because it detects my twin brother as mine "some times" but its good enough

Ah thanks, I've just changed it so I have slide to unlock now, as I much prefer that as I can read the notifications and respond as and when!
I tried the hide notifications to start off with but turned it off as preferred them on, I don't have a nosey girlfriend to deal with, hell I don't even have a girlfriend so I'm good there lol!

That's pretty unlucky, I don't have that issue and have not been able to unlock the phone with a picture so I'm happy with it.

10 hour screen on time

I see some people saying they only get around 3-4 hours sot. I just got my note yesterday. I haven't disabled anything and have brightness at 40% and my battery has only dropped 5% in 30 mins... Therefore at this pace I'd get around 10 hours screen on time.

I think people start messing with it before discovering this and they cause battery issues on their own.

Right? This is the best battery life I've ever gotten... Did notice a big difference switching to my wifi from 4G LTE. At this point I don't even think I'll go through and disable apps but idk.

yes you will, yesterday at 50% battery I had over 5 hour SOT including listening to music for 2 hours, that was with over 10 hours on the battery, my Note 8 runs in performance mode all the time and wifi and mobile data always on.
people who can't get 6+ hours SOT needs to look at their setup and use, I have two Note 8 and both of them are the same.
Try and run it in performance mode all the time for a week instead of installing 3rd party apps helping you to save power etc....

When I hit two hours sot my battery was at 82%. I was going to keep track of it but I did a system update which restarted my phone and now my battery stats are reset... I definitely noticed a faster drain when I was on 4glte and had Bluetooth etc on. Still very impressive.

It's weird but if you read through many of the SOT/Battery threads you will notice a consistency. People who started right off disabling and tweaking apps have experienced poor SOT/Battery Life. People who just use the phone and let it do whatever it's going to do, have good SOT/Battery Life with slight variations due to usage. It seems with the note 8 that disabling apps may be counter intuitive to battery life.
I get approx 1 hour screen time per 10% battery until a certain point in the battery. So I average over 8 hours SOT typically.
Yes, this has been good device so far.
Did you manage to locate your build date and hardware revision? It's on the label on the box.

You can also download Samsung Phone Info and it will also tell you that info. I bought my Note 8 used, and the original owner threw the box away.
According to Phone Info, my build date is 09/15/2017 and its HW rev. 1.0.
I can MAYBE see some "light leak" on the right side. I have to be in pitch black, with the screen white and full brightness. Still not sure thats what I'm seeing. It actually looks like the light reflecting off the edge of my clear protective skin on the frame. It is so hard to see I simply can't tell.
The biggest complaint I have is the edges have a slight pink tint. If Samsung would add the edge tint option like they did withe S8+, then it would be easy to fix. But even that complaint is minute. I'm just mentioning things if I had to nitpick.
This device is beautiful and my favorite phone by far, followed by my Coral Blue S8+, which is now my backup device. Man I wish they would release the Note 8 in Coral Blue. Like the Coral Blue of the S7 Edge.

Oh I know. I've had three S8+ (don't ask LOL). The third one (whichI kept) has a PERFECT screen. No pink tint, completely even color all across the screen, no need to adjust the screen tint or temperature, no discolored edges. It is perfect. The screen and Coral Blue color is why I couldn't bring myself to get rid of it, so I kept it as a backup device.
I would consider my Note 8 screen about 99% perfect. The edges have a slight pink tint, and it is just a little warmer overall compared to my S8+, but certainly not pink. Just warmer.
I do wish they would add the edge tint adjustment though. That would make my Note 8 Screen 100% perfect.

Probably not. Since my first note, pre-order was ten days out in respect to deliver date.
My second Note 8 purchased mid November was built on October 17th China. I'm assuming yours is Verizon?

Maybe if we disable some stuff cause draining because the phone keep searching apps and services. Will try enabling all the blocked stuff.

Razer phone 2

I'm opening up this thread to gauge peoples opinions of whether they will be upgrading to the next iteration of our favourite mobile device. IMHO it looks good, with the addition of IP67 and wireless charging, along with the wonderful addition of the chroma lighting of the logo. Let's hope it lives up to it's predecessors high build quality. Put your thoughts down, let's discuss
I hope the vibration motor is better this time around and the bluetooth software has improved. These two things made me sell my razer. I would not connect in my car when every other phone has had no issues.

If someone wants to buy my Razer phone for €700, I would buy the Razer Phone 2... But for now I'm still happy with this one.
Not missing the headphone jack. Bluetooth headset works great.
Not missing ip67. I never use my phone in the rain or in the shower.
Not missing brighter screen. Only use it outside sometimes (then I'm missing a brighter screen, but I can live with that).
Not missing the rgb logo. I'm using a case.
I might change if the Razer Phone 4 comes along...
I'll be upgrading if:
- Verizion is compatible
- The camera quality is improved
- The speakers are more durable; mine became distorted a couple months ago, pretty sure they are blown.

Razer phone 2 improved on all of those things. Verizon compatible, improved cameras, 50% higher brightness. Even has band 71 for T-Mobile. The speakers are water and dust resistant now (IP67). I wouldn't be surprised if you had a bunch of dust in your speakers. Happens all the time to my phones. I have to take 99% isopropyl alcohol and vacuum out the speakers. After that, my speakers work great. I work in a dusty environment and I know exactly what you're talking about.

I forget who I watched on YouTube, but they said the vibration motor is greatly improved. Bluetooth is probably fixed too, because it's using the snapdragon 845.
How is the update schedule of the first razer phone? Looking into this phone...peaked my interest....

True, that is what is so far just stated by Razer and s couple of YouTubers, as far as the camera, speakers and screen goes.
We really won't be able to really know how much of an improvement the new phone is until we start getting some actual hands on reviews once the new phone ships out.
I've only seen a couple reviews, even though they where hands on, didn't see any camera samples or anything.
Verizion capability will really sell me on this phone. I had to switch to AT-T and the coverage in my town is horrible. I use straight talk so I don't have wifi calling either.
I almost sold my phone and went back to my old Droid Turbo 2, but honestly after using this 120hz screen, it's physically painful to look at a 60hz screen now!
Not even the $1200 iPhones have a screen this great!

NO WAY!!
I have lost faith in razer as they are responsible for breaking bluetooth and not fixing it. It could have been a great device if they had given it the support it deserved instead of dropping it and moving on to the 2. Switched to the oneplus 6, just wish it had front firing speakers.
Keep these opinions coming, I for one will be upgrading but I still think we need to keep this discussion going
I have been looking at this phone too I like the design of it. I had a razer phone way back when. I have a bootloader unlocked rooted LG v30 US998 now. I know this is the wrong place to say this but lets hope we get some dev to work on unlocking the bootloader and root so we can have some good roms.
Looking to get it as well and finally retire my champ of a Nexus 6!
Just got my phone in the mail today. Only probably that I have had so far is that I can't receive texts. I can send texts on WiFi and off but can't receive. Will update tomorrow when I get back from Verizon.
I'm excited-should be the best phone out

Well they swapped out the old SIM for new SIM. When they put the new Sim in the phone I was not able to make any phone calls or send out any Text due to it having to wait to register on the network so they put in the old SIM and I still was not able to send text but I was able to receive phone calls and make calls. When I got home I got in contact with razor and they were no help. Upon doing some research online through Twitter I found this post.
https://mobile.twitter.com/Razer/status/1054749294509649922
I found a Verizon fix on reddit. Just call, ask for Tier 2 support, say you want a CDMA-less profile. Give them your IMEI, ICCID for sim, and your number. Worked for me.
As far as the camera goes, there threads on here about it - it blows, but there's a gcam port already, and it's 'day and night', makes it totally usable. Not gonna be like pixels, but not a dealbreaker either
I just received my Razer Phone 2 and am enjoying it, but I can find no documentation whatsoever. Does anyone have a link to a manual? Still no firmware files either.
I am trying to use Chroma to show Outlook notifications, but there is so little information available, I am having problems. Any ideas?
No front led notification light. The only way to receive notifications is via the Chroma logo on the back.

Press the "Arrows" button on the corner of the logo box in the Chroma app. An option will appear to show notifications on the logo. There's no customisation it just picks the colour from the app icon and blinks. You need at least the lowest light setting to be on.

I've had enough!

After 2 replacements (all green screen's) I've decided enough is enough, this latest one has no green screen issue (BOE) display but the FP reader and face unlock is seriously bad compared to the others I've had. I'm running the 146 update as well and have done a wipe of the device, along with reprogramming my fingers but no joy.
My network are doing a non like for like replacement so I'm getting the Pixel 3XL which comes next week. I will miss this amazing battery and great camera but I've had enough!
Luckily I'm able to retain my tariff as well.
I hope others that stick with this great device have more patience than me.

Sad to hear it my friend, but fully get your position, it's a fantastic device let down by lack or poor QC.
They should have went to Samsung for their displays lol however mine is ok so far, so I'm definitely keeping. It's just sad that this has happened and voided your use.
I have also picked up another device to compliment the Mate 20 Pro....
Here it is.....

Yes it sure is let down by QC, which is a shame as it has the potential to be the best device this year!
Wow fair play, so rocking 2 of the best devices out I see! [emoji12]

Yeah I was always interested in the Find X, and daaaaaaamn it's stunning, but terribly let down by colorOS. Oppo have disabled fastboot, so can't unlock the bootloader, but I'm hopefull that might change.
Other than that I'm extremely happy with it.
Best of luck with your Pixel 3 XL.....:good:

Is a great phone full of features, i also not so happy with the video recording at 4K, wide angle only max at 24fps, jerking video.

I never really took any 4k videos but heard it wasn't great.

I tried 4K HDR @60fps over YouTube vanced with performance mode enabled, playback struggles @4K, I then switch to 2K [email protected] and video is smooth as butter. 4K [email protected] also no issues.
K980 is not optimised for [email protected] Huawei can add [email protected] for now.
Rooted M20P is a different story.
I think there is some flaw in k980 since it's a new technology and may be it cannot be overclocked, or may be Mali g76 is to be blamed for this.
The rooting section of the forum seems to be rotting, guess Huawei is next victim of Apple protectionism syndrome.

Why isn't there that much ROM development for Snapdragon?? or Unlocked Note 9?

How's everyone going to Today or Night depending where your from?
I currently have an Unlocked Note 9 Model #SM-N960U1 which has a snapdragon processor.
I've been wondering isnt there any Rom development for the Snapdragon versions. I see that the Exynos Processor Version has a decent amount of development going on there. I have noticed with previous Samsung phones that its usually the other way around, that there's more going on for snapdragon than exynos. Does anyone have an idea why that is?
Thank you,
Andr3w151
Security is tighter with the US SD versions. Locked bootloader. Root is in the works.

Because it has a locked bootloader that will never be unlocked, and currently no root (although that is being worked on).

there never was a time in at least the past 5 years where snapdragon had more development/roms than exynos.
Thread cleaned. Please keep posts relevant to the topic.
Supply and demand, the note 9 Oreo is pretty much a perfect phone (I'd add a 7.5 inch screen model for us old farts)

Lol that's not at all why they lock bootloaders, but yes it's definitely a great phone
I agree with @sullytrny . This is practically my perfect phone. I've never had any issues with this device. It's rock solid. I can't think of a reason that I would like to root my phone. It has every feature I would have added by rooting my phone 4 years ago. Good job Samsung. Now push the Pie update to your unlocked devices please.

But if you did need to restart your phone,it does that automatically as well. I have my settings restart every Monday morning at 3am just to "clear it out" for the work week. Truly is a great device. Waiting for my S10 though. That has to be a step up.

I can think of a reason. The ability to drop a full metal backup and restore is sorely missing in non-rooted phones.

Led color notification pixel 4xl

Dear Friends ,
Do this smartphone have the led notification like pixel 2xl ?
No, there is no notification LED
Looks like AOD for now...
That's already more than OP can say ?
That's something I'd really miss about my Pixel 2 XL.

That really sucks since AOD uses a lot more battery. If basically causes the phone to burn an additional 1% per hour when in stand by.

WHich they have managed on the Pixel 4 with motion sense. If it detects you move away from phone it turns of AOD to save battery

Exactly. Pretty sure Google thought of everything on this device. The software may need some tuning, but that's it. The framework is solid

That may be true. Although we still don't know how much power the motion sense sensor uses. The motion sense senor is basically radar. It's sending out radio waves and detecting what comes back. That takes power too. It's possible that the motion sense sensor always running will use just as much battery than AOD does. It could even use MORE battery than AOD.
Hi guys ,
It's only a my opinion ,
but pay for pixel 3xl and 4xl 900 / 1000 euro and missing led notification , It's a big problem , I love that small light.

LOL! I agree with most of what I've seen you post, but this? C'mon. Google consistently misses things when their phones are first released. Google routinely does not think of everything, at least not at first launch anyway. Often times they only seem to be aware of issues after hundred of users report on it.

I loled when i read that to. I was just telling my friend who works at Verizon and is trying to get me to upgrade that ill wait till people get it in hand as pixels are known to have phone breaking bugs at launch lol
I go through a lot of phones and all had problems, some of them never got fixed. I'm doubtful this phone will be any different than every phone before it in that regard. AOD uses power, no lie, I like it so I leave it on. Turning it off is no answer, I get that. What I don't get is turning off all the cool features a phone has to save batt when charging is everywhere, it's quick, and portable supplies are cheap, work well, and will get you through a pinch. This phone will likely have 4 or more hours without skimping on anything. To me the win is playing with the toys I bought, not gimping them to save battery life which can be easily and well covered.
This isn't a call out BTW, I just don't understand the thought process.
having an LED notification light is better than not having one. There's plenty of room. The Pixel 4 has a lower screen to body ratio than the S8. And while the S8 has an annoying curved screen, it has an LED notification light. It can coexist with an AOD. You can turn one off and use the other. Just like the headphone jack argument IMO. And the LED notification light is just so useful. It's a shame that app that lets you customise it got neutered by Google's updates to Android.
Oh and it sucks that there isn't an SD card either. It makes sense to companies as they can push paid cloud storage but not to customers.

Doesn't make sense to add as card support, as this still is a hack - as has been on Linux based systems for years - and thus a security risk. It actually doesn't make any sense to add a hack to my system. Just my 2 cents.

I don't think there motion sensor uses much power at all. I fully charged me phone before I went to bed last night and left it off the charger overnight. It only used 4% battery over 9 hours.

Well that's good news. That stand by time is better than I thought it would be with the radar sensor but still not what I got from my Pixel 2 XL when it was new. I dropped about 2-3% over 8 hours. Even now after 2 years I still only see about 4% over 8 hours.
