Two questions:
1. Is there a way to get the camera lens to not auto focus constantly?
2. What is a decent alternative to the stock Google camera app? I'm mainly looking for the ability to pause video recording.

Unfortunately no (or not yet in 5.1) at least with the stock Google Camera.

This is incorrect. Manual exposure has noting to do with the camera refocusing all the time.

I apologize for the misinformation. I was under the assumption that this was a way to better control the focus and I have been part of other discussions where this was deemed a sort of workaround for the refocusing issue. I agree that it is not a 100% solution, but it does seem to help somewhat. The user clicks on the desired area of focus, via the viewfinder and the camera then focuses on that specific area.
I don't use the camera excessively so I'm not the expert advice provider here. I just wanted the OP to try this and see if it helped in his camera use. I should have been more specific. Thanks again.
Manual Camera is a good alternative camera app to use.
For whatever reason the flash does not work correctly with manual camera. I had to go back to google camera.
I'm curious as to what your favorite app and settings you use for your 3T. I'm a OnePlus n00b and have been using the stock app along with Cameringo+ with good results but ideas are always welcomed. I'd do a poll but the options are endless.
Stock camera app and ProShot with noise reduction disabled. That's all you need.

Thanks but I don't see Pro Shot or Noise Reduction in the stock app. Where do I find those? I checked both Settings options.
Unless you mean Manual mode and leave everything else on Auto.
HDRa is Auto HDR, HQ is best for low light. In camera when you see video, camera etc click the cog and you can select RAW. You won't see these in your gallery but using lightroom or snapspeed (it's free) you can open a picture from gallery and it will pick up on the raw photo. These look awful to begin with as they are not processed at all and are 50mb+ but one you develop them yourself to your desired look you get some quality photos from them.

I have been trying open camera from time to time. It allows you to enable the camera 2api and takes some great pictures. I find the flash on stock flawed at times as if the shutter speeds is off point to the flash and this overcomes that problem.
I'm not a big selfie fan or photo gay. But in my Samsung S6 I'm using stock camera application with few addons + Candy Selfie for taking selfies when I need.
Can anyone help me with the video settings.
In 1080p OIS does not seem to work at all
1080p / 60fps it does work
I cannot find any settings to alter this. Thanks.
Does Nokia 8 camera support full manual settings? Could you please test with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.vipek.camera2_compatibility_test and show results here?
Also has anybody tried any 3rd party camera apps like OpenCamera, Camera FV-5 or those SnapDragon Camera ports which can be found here on XDA? Is photo quality different compared to Nokia 8 stock camera?
The pixel camera apk works but flash is iffy. There is another thread about the camera in questions n answers

I'm interested in this too - especially for Camera2 manual controls, bearing in mind that some devices may show full Camera2 compatibility, but there's still the question of whether it works bug-free. Third party camera apps with Camera2 are:
A Better Camera: enable Settings/General settings/More/"Use Camera2 interface".
Snap Camera HDR (Trial): enable Settings/Other/"Use Camera2 API".
AZ Camera: this uses Camera2 by default.
Footej: this uses Camera2 by default.
Open Camera (disclaimer, I'm the author!): enable Settings/"Use Camera2 API".
How do things like flash, manual shutter speed, RAW work on the Nokia 8? Thanks!

Thanks. I'm thinking about buying Nokia 8 at some time in the future and this full manual camera is the most important feature.
One more thing that the Manual compatibility test app does not show: does Nokia 8 support touch light metering? I.e. if there are light and dark areas in viewfinder, automatic light metering would burn the light areas. With touch metering you touch the light area and the result is more natural.
Shutter seems to be limited.
Cant exposure over 1s, hoping that update will fix it.
I think lg g6 have same sensor maybe im wrong but it will exposure 30s
Which camera app is best for manual controls?

Opencamera...you can play with iso speed and shutter is limited still to 0.1s
Enable in app camera 2api feature.
If yuo want just pont and shoot take google camera apk .
In oreo beta, only build in camera app records video.
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/ there is the arnova apk i like that.
You xan test the cyanogen cam too...it has manual controls but still shutter speed limited to 0.1s

Hi
Will Huawei fix the overexposed soft image quality of the selfie camera on this phone.
I am still on 8.1.0.103 and wondering if its been fixed in one of the newer updates as it is really disappointing
Not sure they think it's broken, it was obviously designed to do this on purpose. I know a lot of people that use beauty mode. It is rather annoying though as it can't be disabled for those that don't want to be enhanced to Ken doll like proportions lol
If you hit the photo mode rather than the default portrait mode for front camera it does help a bit. Definitely better than portrait mode. I do hope that a future update will add more control over the processing, but I won't bank on it.
I've tried many different camera apps, and the overexposure and softening occur as soon as the camera detects a face. Haven't been able to find a solution yet.

im 99% sure it can be disabled with root - its got to be a setting that detects faces.
we;d need someone to go through the source (if they ever release it)
once i root my p20 ill stalk around to try and find a property.
Sorry, i dont have phone yet. But, if you use some other camera application, will it be the same problem?
Its definitely a setting built into the kernel/source code because using another camera app will not override the setting. It only focuses on the subject (face) and blurs out the background which should not be the case
I have rooted P20 pro, and there is a ton of properties and definitions xml files for different modes and effects in odm/camera folder. For example there is something called "casiobeauty" among others But, to mess with those parameters someone has to have knowledge. So, i guess effects can be modified, if there ever will be someone of knowledge and will to do it
You all may want to install CameraMX from PlayStore.
It gives out high resolution and high qualoty images. Selfies taken by it are noticeably sharper than the p20 pro stock camera. Also, there is a slider to adjust exposure for the front cam (something that is missing from the stock). In addition, the app also supports HDR for the selfie cam as well.
You can give it a try...

Uploaded the wrong photos the last time sorry..
For the photos below, the washed out one is taken with the front camera native app. The better one is with cameraMX app.
Note: No editing done, same lighting condition, almost the same hand position, same angle.
It is very evident that the native camera app is washed out/overexposed.
Well, the CameraMX photo isnt perfect but for me, it is 80% better than the stock camera.

Hi, I'm pretty much sure it's a software issue as the original photo can look so much better when you edit it. And, you can also use other camera apps
There is a workaround on the overexposed p20 front camera images using the Google Photos Editor App
(I've read it from another XDA thread).
The results are stunning! It's almost as if the photos were taken using an actual Google Pixel front camera! (In my opinion)
I suppose the image enhancement algorithm for the Google Photos app is similar to the image post-processing of Google Pixel phones.
Note: Google Photos is commonly preinstalled along with Gmail, Hangouts, GMaps.
Step 1 - Snap a selfie using the native app
Step 2 - Preview the photo and click the (...) at the bottom right
Step 3 - Click Advanced Edit ---> Select Google Photos
Step 4 - Select the second icon next to the filters menu.
You will find 3 sliders (Light, Color, and Pop)
Step 5 - Slide Pop all the way up, as well as Color.
You may tweak the settings more for Color and Light too!
(There are more options when you expand it)
Step 6 - Click Save.
Find sample photos below:
Just got a P20 Pro and this is seriously my biggest hate with this phone! The rest is great (except my google pay not working) but the front camera makes me look like a ghost on any image!

Pls suggest / link for gcam for sirocco
Download from here, work perfect: https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/gcamera/GCam_6.1.021_N7P_test2.1_defaultjpg.apk
Link is from this theme: https://community.phones.nokia.com/...or-the-google-camera-port-for-nokia-8-sirocco
All versions from back.rider are working fine.
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-backrider/
Hello, did anybody found a working version of GCam for Nokia 8 Sirocco after the recent update to Android 10? I tried many apps suggested in the Nokia 7 Plus thread, as it's supposed to have the same internals but no success. I disabled battery optimization. The app starts once, I allow it everything and afterwards it just crashes. The only port, which was semi-successful was KillerCam_V1-Final_SA10.apk based on GCam 6.1 (I can't post a link, sorry) I'm able to capture a movie but not a photo. I can make panoramas and use the lens blur but not normal photos or portraits. The version based on GCam 7.2 crashes like all other ports. Did anybody else had more luck?
EDIT: I also set it like recommended in this post:
Killer Mod mandatory settings
1."Fix tap on focus" should be Enabled
2."Buffer Fix" should be Enabled
3."Using Sabre" should be Never
4."Max allowed memory" its upto you allow as maximum as you can. In my case 1680

Can Raw Capture be enabled somehow on rooted devices?
there's a way to prevent gcam from crashing described on the Nokia Community board (can't post a link because I just registered):
1. Install KillerCam_V1.5_Revolution_6.1.021.apk
2. Go to app details and force stop Killer Cam
3. Clear all app data from Killer Cam
4. Start Killer Cam and confirm access to location etc.
5. Close Killer Cam
6. Install Gcam_6.1.021_Advanced_V1.6-Fu24_5Lens-02b6.5-A10.apk
this does result in a working, usable app at least, but still without RAW support of course.
It doesn't crash but what's the point without HDR+, portrait and night shot.
Better of to install gcam go
