My phone was previously rooted with magisk. I did a complete uninstall of magisk and then fully wiped my phone and installed the stock image. I've tried this multiple times now. After my phone gets set up, I try to download the OTA updates, and it will just say the update failed. Is there something else I am missing here? What is causing me to be unable to update?
Back when the 8.1 update was offered OTA I had a similar problem. For whatever reason OPW28.1 (OPW28.46-13) failed every time. I had to wait for the flashable firmware to become available and then flash it. After that I took all OTAs just fine up to the current version (Jun 2018). If you are willing to wipe your phone you can try to flash the latest firmware instead of trying OTAs.
Latest one is OPW28.3 (OPW28.46-21) 8.1.0 w/ June 2018 security patch:

Knowledge of ADB and fastboot is required.

Thanks, I was actually trying something similar when you posted.
I had previously been flashing OPWS27.57-25-6-10 which is 8.0, and it would fail to update every time.
I decided to try a different stock image, and I found an 8.1 image linked from this thread.
I flashed it, and tried ota update again. I initially got an error that the update failed, but I tried again, and it actually worked! So I am up to date on the July patch now!

I saw the forum posting saying that the android O update is rolling out in australia and new zealand. this got me concerned because i dont believe my phone can get OTA updates. I rooted and flashed roms and went back to stock, however my bootloader says the phone is modified and google play says the phone is uncertified. is there anyway i can go back to true retail stock to guarantee that i can receive the OTA update when it rolls out in the states?
If you have flashed the correct firmware according to the country where u live u will definately get OTA updates. Many times I flashed Oct security patch updates and after booting I get notification to update my phone. It doesn't matter if bootloader is locked or unlocked , modified or official . Even if you're rooted then also you will receive notification to update but if try to update it may crash. Just make sure it's a clean unrooted official firmware.
I still have the july security patch how do i get the october one?
I haven't been able to receive OTA updates ever since I upgraded to OREO via Odin(couldn't wait). I am still on the March security patch. There have been a number of updates since then. I have checked to see if I have the correct region firmware installed (the CRC file) which was correct. Then I tried updating via Smart Switch which didn't work. I also tried wiping cache(don't want to factory reset) which didn't work. Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated
You need to flash back to the ota path. so carrier firmware that wasnt beta stuff
No, I never flashed any beta firmware. I just flashed the Official Oreo Release Firmware pertaining to my region yet I am not receiving updates.
I have the XT1900-1 android one version. Before unlocking my bootloader, I had the December 2018 security update. I unlocked my bootloader to get lineageOS, but decided to go back to stock using muchy_cool's guide. But now the security patches are going up to November 2018, and then it says its up to date.
Is there a difference between the stock firmware from the guide and the stock firmware upon buying the phone? I would assume so because if I relock the bootloader again, the warning message on boot changes to "device has loaded a different operating system". But then this is still stock firmware. Why don't the updates get detected?

Well it sounds like the OTAs ARE working if you're still on the November update. (My non-Pie phone is still on October update and Android 8.0)
It sounds like you just haven't gotten the December update yet. So did you first get September, October, and November?
As I am aware, even if you got the update it will fail at the moment of installation. There is no official stock recovery available so far that's why even if you lock the bootloader you are using the modified system warning shows at the time of booting.
Hi, I have the Sprint variant Z3 Play currently rooted on 8.1 with the last update from January and I received the notification that the 9.0 update is available to download and install. I've been reading on how I can install this update but from what I understand, I have to update/re-install magisk using the patched boot IMG from the stock 9.0 IMG. The OTA is labeled PCW29.85-36 however all the stock firmwares I've been able to locate are labeled PPW29.xx. Can I extract the boot IMG from this firmware to patch or does it have to be the exact PCW firmware. And is there an alternative such as unrooting the device, reflashing the latest Current Sprint 8.1 Oreo firmware, taking it back to stock while keeping the bootloader unlocked, and then taking the OTA and re-root? My only reason for the root was to run Viper4Android and would like to keep this setup. I've also read on methods using LMSA but instructions on a rooted device are a little vague to me. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I've got a dual-sim moto g6 (xt1925-5). I see that software channels such as reteu or retail have more recent Pie updates whilst retgb last Pie update was PPS29.55.24. I know that because my phone is rooted with unlocked bootloader and twrp, I would not get OTA updates. But from what I've read I could flash any updates from retail or reteu using RSDLite.
So I'm wondering if I would loose any functionalities or have any drawbacks by switching away from retgb ? any recommendation as to either move to reteu or retail ?
Thanks.

So I flashed the latest reteu I could find (PPS29.55-37-4) using fastboot and keeping user data. It went smoothly (only got an bad key error for the bootloader img, which was expected with unlocked bootloader). Reflashed twrp / disable_dm / magisk before the first boot. Phone rebooted and working fine.
Settings shows the right build but I'm still on retgb somehow. I expected to see reteu, any ideas ? Something I did wrong ?
Sorted, found it in /data/system/users/0/mot_settings_global.xml
