Hey guys,
when do you expect Android Pie to be released for the XZ1C?
I know for a fact that they will prioritize the XZ2C and that XZ3C will probably be released on Pie so what do you think?
I think that they won't release Pie for XZ1C at all.
All hope in LineageOS

There's not even any rumours of us getting 8.1, so it seems unlikely we'll be on the P list

Seeing as the XZ1 range is less than a year old, I am pretty sure that we will get P. I don't see skipping 8.1 as an indicator, if Sony decides there isn't enough improvements over 8.0 that justify the effort, why bother?
Wouldn't hold my breath for a release before christmas though.
After beeing loyal to Sony since my Xperia X8 (Xperia T, Xperia Play, Z1c, Z3c, Z5c and now XZ1c) all I can do is to say: We wont get an offical release, no way.
I hope they give us the pie very soon, the xz1 it's the a flagship so they must don't forget about us. There's the xz2 and then xz1 so they should give the pie at same time like Google does

My device history is very similar to yours (Xperia T, Z1C, Z3C, XZ1C), which is why I don't understand your reasoning. The Z1C for example was shipped with JB at launch, and received official KK and LP (both 5.0 and 5.1). The Z3C was released with KK and received updates to both LP and MM.

XZ3 is in the pipeline, XZ2 is already released and XZ1 doesn't get too much attention in my opinion.
The only thing thats strange is that they keep releasing updates to the latest patch level. But I still wont believe that we'll get Pie until they really release it

I hope they give attention, it has top line specs and it was released with oreo
Saw this after Googling: https://www.androidauthority.com/so...et-software-upgrades-two-years-launch-834758/
I'm really hoping to get some mileage out of this phone but we'll see if Sony will support their premium customers.
LOL guys, of course we will get Android 9. Not getting it makes no sense. Sony provides always 2 major updates for Hi end devices.
All my past Xperia devices had at least 2 major OS updates. The exception being the Xperia SX, which only had 1. XZ1 series must at least have 1 major update.
Two major updates? So the XZ1C will get Android Q as well? Well that's good to hear
XZ1C has Project Treble support, so it's probably a lot easier for Sony to release a major update compared to pre-Treble phones, which from my experience generally enjoyed phenomenal upgrades compared to the competition. Well, the flagships at least, can't say the same for their mid-range models.
Anyway, I'm pretty optimistic that we'll get to P and beyond, but from what I've seen so far of 9.0... no thanks, not interested.

Rooting my phone means I opted out of the obligatory updates.
My experience with updates of OS that are different from the one released with the phone is that they are clunky, power hungry amd sometimes broken.
Despite what Google promise with battery savings, it'll still end up thirstier than 8.
What are you talking about OP? We will deffo get Android Pie and probably Android 10 T (Toblerone or sthg)

By the end of this year, XZ1 and XZ1 compact will get Android Pie.

Lol obvio, we will all have android P. The question is, what about Android 10?...

Does anybody know which major firmware update we will be receiving next and when?
Sony seems to be awfully quiet lately regarding their update schedule.
With 4.4 on the horizon it's unfortunate the Z1 shipped with 4.2 instead of 4.3 but it wouldn't be so bad if Sony at least gave us a rough estimate.

They will probably update it to 4.3, and after it to 4.4
Sent from my C6903 using xda app-developers app
I remember reading somewhere that they are saying 4.3 would roll out in October. But I am not sure where and how accurate is this
Knowing Sony smartphones for years, i'd say there will be a really late 4,3 update as promished, and after that the phone will not get any more updates...
Also look at my answer later in this topic

there is a major update on the way as reported on xperiablog - the last 4 digits are changing which usually indicates something more than a bug fix but not likely 4.3

I'm not to sure about this update... This 1 rumour came up and nothing has been seen about it ever since.. I personally would take it with a pinch of salt for now!
The question is IF there will be a major update from Sony for the Z1 after 4.3...
And the answer is "most definitely not!"
Don´t get me wrong, i love all my sony phones, but the updates is allways missing.
Sony has released new phones many times before with an older android installed at shipping date, and then made the promished "major update" after that, to the newest current version a month or two later... This way Sony is fulfilling Goggles demands about at least two major versions, without actually giving the customer anything new at all...
Nothing new in that, just look at Sony history...
IF Sony on the other hand SHOULD decide to release 4.4 down the road, it will definitely be without keyfeatures like sony camera features and so on...
Look at the history...
Just go back and read it, start eg. with the Xperia X10...
WHEN you buy a Sony phone, you have to understand that the promished firmware is ALL you will ever get, and that Sony WILL abandon all updates faster than you can count to 10...
(So only small bug-fixing can be expected after 4.3 for the Z1)
At first it looks like Sony is working hard to put out a working current Andriod version for the phone, but they are not... absolutly not !
Just sit for 2 sec. and think about this:
WHY would Sony at all ship a brand new phone, with an older Android version installed at shipping date ?
Would Sony not have to do just as mutch work to put out the older 4.2.2, as they have to if they decided to put out 4.3 from the shipping date ?
The ONLY difference is that IF they shipped with 4.3 then they had to update to 4.4 also to fullfill Googles demands, but with 4.2.2 as shipping firmware, and a fast update to 4.3, they don´t...
This Sony-scam is ONLY to fullfil Googles demands, nothing else...

All these issues are fixed with custom roms yes? Official releases don't matter anymore then?
Also, will they atleast release a big update for the camera, other bugs and unlocked bootloader issue?

I'm not to bothered about this to be honest, maybe they can change but we have a Snapdragon 800 and Qualcomm actually release their sources (cough Samsung cough) so Cyanogenmod performance will be like awesomeness, I have my concerns regarding the camera's future with Sony being to stuck up to release the sources.

Ok then, i did read the question as if it was a question for official firmware, not custum roms...
- and my answer was becource of that, minded on the official SONY firmwares...
Custom firmwares is a whole other matter, and mutch harder to guess anything about yet...
- THAT only depend on how many people who buy this phone, and who of the devs here at XDA will work with it...
You need attention from a fantastic dev to get unofficial firmware flying...
BTW:
the history shows that Sony have NOT been fantastic releasing sorces before, so don´t count on it, but keep your fingers crossed...

yes, wait the release for the developer & they will build it.
But it is still a developer preview
L's only two versions away. I'm sure we'll get a port or a CM rom sooner or later.
If any developer that I know of from Xperia Z, it will definitely be @pabx first to release Android L.
He was the first to bring KitKat over to Z in just a matter of days. In fact, it was not with some unusable build either. A full usable rom for daily driver.
Android L = Awesome Xperia Z !
Yes..!!!:good::good:
I totally agree with Android L being ported to Xperia Z....!!! It's much better than any software till now...
Here are the reasons;
Key Features:
Improved Notifications
Project Volta: Improved Battery Life (Needed for Xperia Z, due to battery drain issue in Kit Kat)
Google Fit...Competition for Apple's Healthkit
Better Web Integration
Runs on ART extension , (support for 64bit systems), (Dalvik is being ditched).
Since RAM usage will be less, and apps usage and loading time will be faster...
So lets wait for CM, PAC, Carbon...or some other developer till then...
Cheers...

I don't expect Sony to update Xperia Z to 5.0 - we will probably hear "you already received 3 updates, that's it folks".
IMO it shouldn't be about how many versions you receive - it should be about a timeframe. If your phone doesn't receive updates after 1,5 years, then maybe you should stop making new phones every 6 months if you can't manage to update them - and look at other companies like HTC, Samsung ( yes... ) or perhaps Apple who offers iOS8 to a 4,5 years old iPhone 4S.
Does my post sound like I'm angry with Sony ? Good, because I am...
KitKat was a disappointment. Been waiting almost a year and received nearly no new features apart from UI redesign which doesn't really matter to me anyway and tons of bugs, battery woes etc. To be honest - every single release had some kind of problems, especially with battery life...

KitKat's battery drain was not Sony's fault however. It was Google and Google Services, as with a previous version I cannot recall. Those kind of things are out of their reach since it varies from phone to phone with its version. I do agree however that there are some "kinks" that need to be remedied. I cannot understand why they refuse to unify most builds so they run similar applications. Like for example the stock KitKat apps (like Messaging and Settings) on my Z are totally different from Z2's stock apps running KitKat

Maybe it is all on purpose. Bugs, bugs and bugs but redesign UI and everybody is happy at the moment they upgrade it's firmware. And than, bitterness strike.
Maybe Sony wanna make XZ more and more buggy so it's users can look forward to Z2 or Z3, because XZ is still very capable of doing practically anything and is still strong and better phone than most 2014 mid-rangers and all Xperia non-Z models.
Yesterday I compared for couple of hours Z2 on 4.4.2 with my XZ 4.4.2. UI Smoothness is basically the same. WiFi/3G surfing the same, talk quality the same. Photo and 1080 video quality has very small improvement on XZ2. OK, sound quality, battery and screen are way better, but for common users like me, transition to XZ2 is freaking waste of money, except for battery duration. I switched in May 2013 form HTC Desire to Xperia Z and that cost me 100 EUR. Now, July 2014, transition form XZ to XZ2 would cost me 250 EUR. For what? Better AnTuTu benchmark score

Then you should get the g3 ? I think the g3 is a better upgrade than the z2 . Different ui , higher res , bigger screen but smaller size than the z2 . Getting a z2 or z1 for upgrade is like getting a slightly bigger screen size with more power .

It could be ported but not on locked bootloader.
For unlocked bootloader you just need a good developer and that shouldn't be a problem.

I, absolutely, do not.
Z1 will get 5.0 that's for sure...
Not only 5.0, I pretty sure we'll see few more versions (5.x.x) after that.
Z1 isn't XS and it has a lot "support time" in front of it...
I know I won't sell it
Sony started to release updates quicker than ever before and I'm very satisfied with them now...
Z2 should get 4.4.4 as well but Sony finally admit heating problem (camera related heating, sometimes even overheating with camera FC) so they are fixing that and Z2 will get 4.4.4 as well..
But...even Sony is faster now with updates and we saw Google finished (or almost finished) Android v5.0 I really doubt it'll be on our devices before autumn...
Sony must work on UI and change it, or change some things in/on it so thet will need a time...
My guess would be:
October - releasing Z3 powered by L
End of November - upgrading Z1/Z2 and maybe even Z (even I doubt that) to L
If rumors are correct and snapdragon 801 will be heart of Z3 they will need new OS to sell it
Same screen, same RAM, same chipset.... They need something new

They need something new

you wont sell it, and you also have Z2
I guess Z1 is the Lab Rat of Android 4.4.4 for Z2, if heating problem got totally solved in Z1, then Z2 will release 4.4.4 very soon
for the L, I guess will be 2 months after IFA Z3 release,
I checked online Z3 is using S801 AC,but screen have some changes, and I guess if we are lucky enough that Sony would give out their trump card which is curved camera sensor. I hope we will really see killer of Lumia 1020 or 808

I realized that it's better to leave it.
I can't get "good money" for it so I decided to keep it.
My wife is using it and she loves it...
She was always saying it's ridiculous to wear brick in a pocket but when she took Z1 just for one afternoon I couldn't take it back from here anymore
It wasn't cheap to keep both devices but Z1 is just 9 month old device and I don't want to sell it for 300$...

I believe all three phones will be getting the newest android update, the Z1 and compact are no slouches and a hardware limitation can't be called as the 800 is literally an underclocked 801 afaik and with android attempting to get lighter and lighter, save some feature which needs to have a hardware counterpart, i can see no reason why the z1 and so forth shouldn't get the update and even the one after that, not sure what that'll be called (MiniRoll maybe )
There's life in the old dog yet.
Could see a port getting done, but it'll more than likely never have everything functional, so you'll be trading off a lot of the stability and features you now have on stock / modded Z1 firmwares, the camera for example would be an issue, interesting to see it in action but I'd more than likely revert back to stock to gain full functionality again.
Guess we'll have to wait and see.
Will our Z get the L or no?

For now bad news :crying:
,,Having said that, look for an Android L update for the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z2 and the upcoming Xperia Z3. The compact versions, and carrier versions, too. Other phones are a total crapshoot. Sony will do everything they can, but as we've seen, often that's not enough. I'll repeat myself — nobody wants to update to Android L more than Sony does.
The same thing goes for their tablets. The latest models will find a way to get an Android L update, but anything made earlier than mid-2013 is too unpredictable to predict."

do not post questions in the general section!
Besides that, only Sony knows if we will get Android L
what features of L do you specifically need? or is this just a case of having the latest and greatest updates? looks at kitkat, that's not exactly brilliant now is it

Not the same really. More like the people who didn't get Ice Cream Sandwich. Even though the apps still work on Gingerbread you were left behind like some legacy user, Android had moved on.
We depend on the Nexus4.
Meanwile, first wait to receive 4.4.4

Its still a developer preview at the moment.
Also by the time its launched we will be out of the update cycle.
Even if there is no official update, there are lot of capable developers who will port L to Z

According to me will get the Android l but the timing will be very long considering that has not gotten 4.4.4
Hello everybody,
i was in a local consumer electronic center (Saturn) last weekend. A sony promoter told me, that sony gives a guaranty of four years for Android updates @ XZ3. Could be true, because of the relative pure android on the device, but i want to be sure. I googled around but i wasnt able to find a official announcement about this.
Is this true?
If so, is this for main android updates (android 10, 11, ...) for four years or lets say only two years for main updates and two more years for bugfixes and security updates?
Thanks
Sony gives on average two Android versions worth of updates, which would equate to two years of support.
What @mufunyo said is about correct. Basically whatever the phone's OS was at release + 2 more versions is Sony's usual update method. So if you get the XZ3, and following Sony's usual support, the XZ3 should get up to the R version.
Honestly though Sony is also pretty good with their Xperia open source initiative and after 2 years you can still experience a rich custom ROM ecosystem for flagships. I once managed to update my ancient Xperia S (LT26i) to Android Marshmallow with a LineageOS ROM. That phone originally shipped with Gingerbread! That's 5 major versions later! (We don't count Honeycomb since it was for tablets only.)
Thats good to read, thanks for this informations. This let me tend to buy a XZ3 a bit more, but....
... at the moment, Sony has no more ANT+-support out of the box (i thin Z5 Premium was the last phone with ANT+), so this is the only reason why i didnt buy one till now. I think snapdragon 845 is ANT+-capable, but i dont have a confirmation about this and i dont have a statement from anybody about the possibility to patch the XZ3 with ANT+-features.
I need and will buy a new phone in the next ~4 weeks, and if there is no answer (or better: solution) for this, i think i have to buy Samsung again. Sad to say...
