With huawei no longer providing a code , it looks like DC unlocker only supports android 7.x?
No I just unlocked my bootloader running Oreo with DC yesterday, it works great!

DC unlocker costs about 5 USD. So far it worked for many, but it may stop working in the future if Huawei manages to patch the opportunity they are using. You do get OTA's if you just unlock, but not anymore if you root or install twrp.
Openkirin makes good treble roms. Their website is very informative (openkirin.net) and the developers are active on the Telegram support channel.

I tried for my P10 and he asks me 15 €.
It's a little excessive because there is no guarantee of a good result
Isn't it there another easier way? goddammit huawei... Top 10 anime betrayals.
++ I have same problem with my P10. Actually i have written Huawei Global and Huawei Turkey to get bootloader unlock code; but they did not give that code because of "ensure customers have the best and safest possible experience". I will apply some legal procedures to give that code.

Which ones?
It's just poor for Huawei that they do this to their users.
If I buy something it's mine, it's not the property of the manufacturer anymore.
Even though Huawei added this regulation to their Eula it's just a flaw to their customers and for me a reason to tell everybody they shouldn't buy Huawei anymore. The P10 was my first and my last Huawei device.
I'm happy that I have my unlock code.

Congrats about that but this is not my case, I'm on stock and wonder if I could unlock my bootloader with this people and I was not happy with open Kirin for example, I could go back to the same state of the phone I am now? I need to please that the answer is safe as I can not afford to buy another mobile. Now I have the VTR L09 8.0.0.375 c432 and and I've never done anything to the Phone.
With what service would you make a complete copy of the phone? I know it's two questions, but I need you to help me with the two, please. Thank you.
You need to backup your /system with TWRP before you flash an Open Kirin Rom.
After this you'll be able to go back but you still need to do a factory reset.
You also be aware that stock Android misses some nice features EMUI has like scrolling screenshot or flip cover support.

Without unlocking the bootloader you can't flash anything on your P10. You need to pay for DC Phoenix if you want to unlock or pray to holy Ren Zhengfei, maybe he listens to you and changes the Huawei policies as CEO...

So, the steps are : unlock, then can use twrp for a full backup or need root?, and finally follow the open kirin instructions for flashing a rom with magisk

Exactly. Did you ever used stock Android? It's not a great experience as you expect, maybe. I tried it for some weeks and turned back to EMUI after missing 100% functionality.
UpI used rr rom in a moto g 4g and I loved this rom, the look overall. I don't use flip covers and scrolling screenshot lucky for me. But what else you loose/miss changing to rr rom plz? And remember my question before about need root besides for backing up with twrp? Nfc works? Another three questions sorry?

1-Yes if you buy the phone its yours. Do whatever do you want to..sorry what you can do (with locked bootloader). The device is maybe yours, but the software isn´t. I repair phones for a friend of mine who has a mobile shop (seeling making repairs). I do only the software things (reflashing roms, unbricking devices, removing FRP, miaccount lock and so on) and 99,7% of coustomers don´t even know what android version they have and what is root. The rest (0,3%) are noobs who don´t understand what to do and they bricked their phone trying to root, instal magisk....
2-The problem is, that unlocking bootloader is matter of maybe 1% of all customers. Then 50% of this 1% claim warranty repair because they bricked their device. so why souhld Huawei deal with that, they just don´t allow unlocking bootloader and tha´t it.
3-DC Phoenix is driven by Huawei. It is some year known fact.
Even if it's just for 0,3% of all Android users it's a matter of Principe.
When I buy something it's mine. As you said, the software license is legally owned by the manufacturer but not the hardware. So, when I buyed a phone I should've the right to install a third party software to remove the ownership by the manufacturer.
When I buy a T-shirt I can modify it by myself as I want even if there's a logo visible, which is official linceses by the manufacturer who isn't allowed to forbid modifications on this T-shirt.

This is the official FunkyHuawei support thread.
FunkyHuawei is a (mostly) paid service which allows you to do the following:
1. Install the latest system software, even before it's released by OTA.
2. Install beta/prerelease system software, without needing to be a beta tester.
3. Recover a bricked phone.
4. Rebranding / Change the region of your phone (China -> Europe, for example, to get Google and so on.)
5. Enabling dual-sim features on single-sim phones.
6. Root your EMUI 8 phone, even with stock recovery (This feature is free)
You do not need to unlock your bootloader, or void your warranty to use the service. (except the free rooting feature)
To find FunkyHuawei, please Google it. Or you can find a link to the service as well as our rebranding tool within the following XDA Portal article.
https://www.xda-developers.com/exclusive-att-huawei-mate-10-pro-firmware/
We are pleased to announce FHUnbrickFlashTool -- You can now repair any recent Huawei phone via fastboot, even if you cannot access eRecovery or boot the phone! Even if it doesn't show the Huawei logo, as long as you can get a fastboot connection to your computer, you can recover the phone! Google FHUnbrickFlashTool or check FunkyHuawei's reddit for details.
In cooperation with XDA, FunkyHuawei is offering a free credit to Recognized Developers and Recognized Contributers on XDA.
Please PM me for more details.
We will continue posting in this thread with updates regarding new software versions and releases regarding this device.
We will also be monitoring it so we can help anyone who has issues.
FunkyHuawei, due to popular request, is now offering an unlimited pass. You can break your phone all you want, and turn to FunkyHuawei to unbrick it however many times you need to. You can also install all the latest updates, beta versions, and so on, without worrying about spending credits. You can check out more details on FH's reddit or homepage.

Mate 10/Mate 10 Pro Device-Specific Information
WARNING: Huawei has considerably improved the security of the Mate 10 compared to previous models.
This means that it is extremely easy to brick the phone if you don't know what you are doing.
FunkyHuawei tools are safe and will not brick your phone, but if you do end up bricking your phone by trying other methods, you can contact FunkyHuawei for help.
All FunkyHuawei features are currently working on the Mate 10, including installing software, recovering bricks, and rebranding.
FunkyHuawei is also offering a new, free feature to root your phone, but rooting will cause the following issue:
-You will lose your data partition, including any carrier/vendor customizations-
To root and rebrand a phone with an unlocked bootloader, please google for the "FunkyHuawei Mate 10 Root/Rebranding Tool"
To rebrand a phone with a locked bootloader, please google for the "FunkyHuawei Rebrand Tool"
With these tools, a full rebrand is possible. You can get OTA updates, and the phone will function entirely like a phone from its new region.
Old methdos do not work with the Mate 10, so you will need to use one of those tools.
To install a firmware update which matches the branding of your phone, you can use the eRecovery method posted in the instructions section of the FunkyHuawei page.
However, when installing a firmware update the first time after using a rebranding tool, you must use a specific version of HiSuite. Please see the instructions included with the tool for more information.
Recommended Branding: ALP-L29 C636 hw/spcseas
We see the most frequent firmware updates for this model, so we recommend everyone rebrand to it for fastest updates.
NOTE: If you want to rebrand a Single-Sim device to Dual-Sim, you MUST use the "FunkyHuawei Rebrand Tool" with a locked bootloader. If you use the Mate 10 tool you can rebrand, but you will not gain dual sim functionality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much does FunkyHuawei cost?
A: You need to buy credits on the FunkyHuawei website. The price per credit varies depending on the number of credits you buy. Different operations cost different amounts of credits. However, the Root feature of the Mate 10 tool is free, and as mentioned above, Recognized Developers/Contributors of XDA can ask for a free credit.
Q: My phone is bootloader locked, and FRP locked. My bootloader unlock code dosen't work. It won't boot. eRecovery doesn't work. Can you help?
A: Yes. With the Mate 10 this is now a common situation. Contact FunkyHuawei for help in this situation. We'll need to access your computer remotely and the procedure is a little bit complicated, but the phone can be unbricked.
Q: I can't get my bootloader unlock code/don't want to unlock my bootloader, but I want to change my phone to something other than Chinese. Can you help?
A: Yes. Our new FunkyHuawei Rebrand Tool works on ALL recent Huawei phones, to rebrand them to another region even when the bootloader is locked.
Q: I'm not seeing the latest version listed on FunkyHuawei or elsewhere as an OTA. Why not?
A: Huawei has a very odd and unpredictable way of rolling out OTA updates. You can use FunkyHuawei to install the new version immediately, or can wait for the update to be rolled out. It might be a month or more after release until the update reaches your device from Huawei directly. We have no idea why.
Q: Why isn't FunkyHuawei free?
A: Because many of FunkyHuawei's features cost FunkyHuawei money to provide. Features that don't cost FunkyHuawei money to provide, like rooting the Mate 10 or our TWRP build for Mate 9/Oreo, for example, are generally made available for free. There are also bills to pay, kids to put through school, and so on.
Q: I noticed FunkyHuawei in an XDA Portal article!
A: FunkyHuawei loves XDA, and is cooperating with them as much as possible. Recognized Developers and Contributors on the XDA forums are welcome to claim a free credit from FunkyHuawei as well.
Q: I have a different question.
A: This is what this thread is for! Post away!
How many percentage xda took to let you put ur tool here lol
Anyway welcome again.

Unfortunately, no. You will lose root if you flash the updates, and will need to root again afterwards, each time, if you want root.
Take note that the Mate 10 is extremely easy to brick if you touch the wrong things, so be careful with what you do as root!

The changelog is unfortunately very generic. Maybe upon public rollout Huawei will update it.
Dear User, This update will improve your device's performance and stability to bring you a better user experience. You are recommended to install it. [Update tips] 1. Make sure your phone has not been rooted before updating. If you experience any issues during the update, please visit the Huawei Support website or contact your local service center for assistance. 2. This update will not erase your personal data.

It's just a slow download, due to your geographic location being far from the server. If you are in Vietnam, you'll get better speed by choosing ALP-L29 8.0.0.115(C636) and not 119. Or you can wait for the slower download for the newest version.
To be clear, if you're using eRecovery, this is AFTER you already successfully installed once with HiSuite, right?
If HiSuite downloads faster you can do the second install with HiSuite too.

I can't get a Windows 7 computer now.what can I do?
Hello All.
I am relativly new to the XDA forum. Mostly i read stuff here, to get very good infos about problems you can run into, and i was able to solve them by reading some threads here. So really glad something like this exit ! Now i think i need to be a lil bit more active inside XDA to get more precise answers. I am a bit confused about the topic: "Bootloader Unlock". So i don´t know which solution might be the best to acomplish my task : get "bootloader unlock" / "root" & "TWRP" on my Huawei P10.
This is my Model :
HUAWEI P10 : VTR-L09
Firmware : VTR-L09 8.0.0.382
Since the official-Huawei sites which provided the "Bootloader Unlock" has been closed, i only found these non-Huawei sites, which promise to provide the "Bootloader Unlock":
1.) Ministry of Solutions ( hxxps_//ministryofsolutions.com/huawei-bootloader-unlock-paid-service-htm )
2.) Global Unlocking Solutions ( hxxps_//global-unlocking-solutions.miiduu.com/bootloader-unlock-codes-choose-model-below )
3.) Funky Huawei ( hxxps_//funkyhuawei.club/buycodes )
4.) Huawei Sim Unlock ( hxxps_//xxx.huaweisimunlock.com/huawei-unlock-prices.html#prices )
5.) DC - Unlocker ( hxxps_//xxx.dc-unlocker.com/ )
6.) HCU - Client ( hxxps_//hcu-client.com/features/ )
(can´t provide Links, because new user)
I guess these "pay"-method services are the only way to get your codes for the "Bootloader Unlock" !? Can anyone confirm, that these listed-services, or some of them works ? (Sadly DC-Unlocker didn´t worked for me. Maybe i´ve done something wrong)
a.) Is it correct, that you need to rollDown from Oreo to Nougat to unlock your bootloader ? (i got Oreo on my phone)
b.) You can´t even think of to "root" your phone and get "TWRP" on it, before you don´t unlocked the Bootloader ? (Or are there maybe other methods to get "root" & "TWRP" onto P10)
It would be great, if someone can give some hints, expirences, or Links to another threads which handles this topic. When on both questions a.) & b.) the answer is = true, so my biggest problem than is, to get my phone unlocked (Bootloader unlock) !
Thanks in advance
Sledgeham

Yes, you need TWRP to root your phone, because you need to flash either SuperSU or Magisk. With stock recovery it's not possible, but you can flash stock recovery after you rooted, if you wish.
This are the direct anwers to your questions, now I'll go a bit further:
Unlock:
DC Phoenix is the only tool which I confirm it's working to unlock the phone.
You're right, Huawei stopped to provide the unlock code to "provide the best expierence for all users". I call this bull****, since DC Phoenix and FunkyHuawei are driven by Huawei.
But if you want to unlock, the only way is to pay - and DC Phoenix works (don't ask me how, I never used it, I just read many posts about it) - it's also cheap with $4.
NOTICE: AN UNLOCK WILL CAUSE A FACTORY RESET!
TWRP:
I can recommend the TWRP by @espaciosalter20 even it's just for testing purpose.
For me it works very well. This version also supports /data decryption (it's the only version for P10 atm, I believe).
Root:
The best way to root is with Magisk, because it's a safe method and the tweaks as systemless installed. This is good for passing SafetyNet, even if it doesn't work for every app (SafetyNet is a check if your phone is unlocked and rooted, some apps check it, mostly banking apps, but also games like Mario Run).
For this, you need to unlock and install TWRP. After this you can proceed installing Magisk.
- Just download the latest stable zip, the manager apk and also the uninstaller, if something went wrong.
- Make a backup of /system if it makes problems while or after installing.
- Install the Magisk zip via TWRP
- Boot the phone (takes a bit!)
- Install the Manager app.
- Done.
If you want to unroot you can either flash your /system backup or update your phone to the same or a newer version with my guide.
I hope this answered all questions!
Have fun with your P10 - and backup your unlock code if you got one!
Thx for the detailed answer !
I´ve done allready rooting with my current Honor 6 (yeah, its also a huawei brand). And it worked smoothly. Because i don´t needed huawei or any service to get a "Bootloader Unlock"-Code.
I got my unlock Code by an App !!! Don´t believe it ? Its called "HonorTuner" ( hxxps_//forum.xda-developers.com/mate-7/general/unlock-code-via-honortuner-t3217651 ). Really a great App. But it seems it only works for older Honor-Devices. I wish something like that app would exist for Huawei P10. Anyways, just wanted to say, that doing the rooting on "P10" is pain in the ass (without a bootloader unlock code).
As said before, i didn´t managed to get a unlock code or to unlock the bootloader with the tool DC-Unlocker. Do you know whats the difference between DC-Unlocker & DC-Phoenix ? I think i need a step-by-step Tutorial to get it working with DC-Phoenix / DE-Unlocker. The last time, i tried it with DC-Unlocker it went wrong, and i lost money . Therefore i just want to be prepared, with a tutorial on it.
@absynteZero created a guide, maybe this helps.
Thx very much @Jannomag. I think this is exactly what i was searching for. I will try it out, as soon as i get some more time. Afterwards i will give you here some feedback about my P10 Bootloader unlock / rooting / -story
I am back. (or better to say my phone)
Now with a little help of this forum, i succeeded to "unlock the Bootloader". Thx to the provided links of "Jannomag". My TWRP version was from this links and the guide-how-to. It was very well explained.
So i can confirm that DC-Unlocker (DC-unlocker client software V1.00.1403) works with an Huawei P10 Oreo OS. I just paid 4,-eur to get 4-credits and with it you can read out the Bootloader Code. It is important
that your ADB Drivers recognize your phone. You can check it by typing into the CMD "adb devices", it should display you your phone serial number. Best way to install all nescecary drivers is to install the actual HiSuite, because everything goes automaticly. Next step is to Start DC-Unlocker, connect your phone to PC, find your phone inside DC-Unlocker (there must be shown a COM-x port with a number). After this step you need to log-in within DC-Unlocker Server (after you paid 4,-eur , you got a user name + password). Finaly you can click on "unlocking" and "read Bootloader Code". In few seconds you got your Code. You should copy n pasta this Code somewhere onto your SD-Card / PC.
After my Bootloader was unlocked, i was able to install TWRP and with TWRP i was able to install Magisk v18.0 , the newest version. I was also able to update my OREO ver. VTR-L09 8.0.0.382(C02)-FULL to VTR-L09 8.0.0.389(C02)-FULL with TWRP oreoupdate , Tutorial-2 ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/p10/how-to/guide-manual-updgrade-to-update-oreo-t3758286 ). Mission accomplished

I am asking as I tried to unlock bootloader thru https://ministryofsolutions.com but got refunded as "Huawei has updated security and its impossible to read bootloader unlock code on new firmwares. Only 30 euro service can unlock latest firmware bootloader. "

Trust me ... as long as you have an Oreo OS, you are able to read the Bootloader Code. Its seems its not a big deal for DC-Unlocker. And in comparison to 30,-eur ... 4,-eur seems much cheaper . I really don´t like these methods and i am angry Huawei closed their possibility to get a Code from them, i was forced to use such a service. However, the first time i tried DC-Unlocker it didn´t worked because i was unknown about the procedure. I lost 15,-eur. And gladly i found help on this forum here. With some detailed guides / tutorials it worked for me on a second try. Give it a try. You really need to follow the instructions in the guides. Thats it.

Hi,
Have you used DC-Unlocker tool or DC-Phoenix? (Not shure about differences)
Here is what Dc-unlocker support told to me: (My info: P10 Vtr-L09. 8.0.0.381 (C432).)
"We do not have bootloader unlock service at all. Chances to read bootloader unlock code from your mobile version on our tool is very low as well."
So I'm noy sure to try...

It is really sad that there is no central point for finding the information about unlocking the boatloader for P10 phones.
I used LOS, CM, AOSP, CAF and cousins for more than 5 years on at least 6-7 devices and now feel completely helpless to be able to use OpenKirin. On XDA P10/P10+ forums lots of posts are outdated as they are pre Oreo updates and on OpenKirin chat it is a no-no question.
Just not sure how the development is supposed to stay alive longer for these beautiful phones...

You should be able to use DCUnlocker, but you may need to downgrade first (my guess is to a firmware version before July 2018). Downgrading can be done with the dload method, but it works only with specific firmware versions, check: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78558134&postcount=41
A new unlock method is also available via the Big Huawei Exploits telegram group. This is free but a bit complicated.

Thank you very much for the info M1chiel, nice to see there is someone who wants to help. Can I ask you one more hint? What's a bit complicated is what I'm looking for. Can you point me in the right way?

Look for @huaweihax on Telegram.
Guys,
You don´t need a downgrade, at all !!!
You just need to download DC-Unlocker. Read the Links of the guides in the first posts. Thats it . Don´t waste time downgrading VTR-L09 to Nougat. Just start unlock with OREO. And whats the Problem here ? 4,- eurs ?? C´mon. Buying a "Kebap" for 4,-eurs or geting Bootloader-Codes for 4,-eurs. Think about. I also mentioned whats really important & all posts before explained everything. Nothing more to say. I also had an email conversation with the support team from DC-Unlocker. They told me the same....but i think the guy for the support don´t know everything (because he is not the dev, of course). So in the end its your descition. I can confirm that i read out Bootloader Code on 2x Huawei P10 : C02 & C432 Phones with both Oreo OS on it with DC-Unlocker !!! ... Nevertheless i wish you success & braveness.
(Please...nobody can destroy his phone. Why this panic ? It is a "read out" not "writing". Just reading out a Code for a Bootloader. You can get panic when you are "writing" f.e. new recovery.img / new OS, and so on. This can destroy your phone if you do something wrong. I allready get into Bootloop, no boot into OS etc. Than i got into panic. But this is a different story)
Hi there, i can confirm similar to sledgehammer, the DC Unlocker worked for my P10plus already with OREO, i was able to read the bootloader code. The latest DC Unlocker version shows detailed the procedure to correctly read this code. You simply have to follow these instructions. the 4 EUR was it worth.
@Sledgeham @dc_01 What was the security patch of the oreo versions you unlocked with DCUnlocker? Were they before July 2018?
No patches, just used software that was on the phone (i bought 2nd hand). These 2x Huawei p10 phones were "vanilla". No Bootloader unlock, no ROOT etc. Just as it is. First phone was: VTR-L09 8.0.0.382 (C02) and i MANUALLY UPDATED this to VTR-L09 8.0.0.389 (C02) (after Bootloader unlock, with TWRP). Second phone was: VTR-L09 8.0.0.376 (C432) and i MANUALLY UPDATED this to VTR-L09 8.0.0.379 (C432) (after Bootloader unlock, with TWRP).
I think security patch was written something with 01.01.2019 and the other was something dec. 2018. But i didn´t pay much attention onto this dates. I think the exact dates you can get from the ROM vers. which was provided on a specific date, if its important for you. In my opinion get "Bootloader Code" with Dc-unlocker from OREO shouldn´t be that hard. For me it was much more work to find out which version i can update manually (C02 and C432).

Thanks for your answer. I am trying to find out why some users report that DCUnlocker works and others that it doesn't. In July Huawei patched a vulnerability that allowed retrieving bootloader codes, so I thought this may be the key. But apparently it's not!

hi there, i did the bootloader task in November 2018, at this time, the phone had applied the latest firmware. So it should be beyond July 2018. I suggest, give it a try. The worst that can happen: you may lose 4€. For me it worked with a second try, because i did not follow the instructions correctly. So you need to set USB to manufacturer mode ( see DC homepage ) to allow DC app to recognize your phone. When following correctly, the thing is done within seconds.
Sorry if this is a repeat.
Has the opportunity for bootloader unlocker codes well and truly passed?
Is there anyway around this?
You can use paid services like Funkyhuawei or Ministry of Solutions.
I used Ministry of Solutions and the price is cheaper.
But it is not normal to pay to unlock bootloader, the key only Huawey can give it so these paid sites in my opinion is money going to Huawey.
I'll never pay anyone to unlock it, on principle not for money. For me it's a robbery that only Huawey can doI'll never pay anyone to unlock it, on principle not for money. For me it is a robbery that only Huawey can do.
Thanks for the link, how does paying for it work and how much roughly is it?
I've been in touch with ministry of services, they can no longer offer bootloader unlocks for the honor play, they've been caught so can't get them anymore, looks like I'll be returning the phone and getting a Nokia 7.1 instead at this rate!

Paid €30 (35$+) to Ministry of Solutions. After payment, you'll need to send your IMEI number and serial number. Then you wait for the bootloader code. That's all.

Guess I was lucky. Seems this will be my last Huawei device.
Payd 24€ by DC unlocker. Bootloader code by emai calculating without serial. Works great my wait time was 3 hours.
Use dcunlocker from playstore

Just tried funky huewei, they took my money but didn't even take an email for me, so pretty sure it's a scam, I've opened a case with PayPal... I guess my last chance is to use dcunlocker but on Google play some others are saying it's a scam too. Huewei have forced money into the hands of scam artists, bravo...

It takes €4.99 for the inscription and €24 for the key? I have the Beta Emui 9
Does anyone know how the unlock codes are generated on their side?
No the option 4.99 doesn't work...
Code by emai for 24€ is the option that works. After many hours comes an email with your unlock code and in the DC app is shown your unlock code. After payment...

Have you already done root with TWRP and magisk?
The code is for the bootloader. Not for the OS.
Bootloader code has nothing to do with the os.
Android 8 or 9 both works. The code only open the bootloader.... Sorry my. English is not so good.
And yes I has installed twrp. Magisk actually don't work for me

Exact. Befor I u locked my bootloader I was on oreo.
After unlock, I install twrp. Boot to oreo start Huawei firmware finder. Load pie beta and installed it via hurupdater

Depends on your build.
I have successfully unlocked mine in December using an unlocking service I found on eBay from "mnz technologies" but it seems they no longer offer it. I also know of a site called "GSMZambia.com" and they claim that they can do it but the service is also unavailable at the time of posting.
So to answer you question: it is possible but probably not at the moment, you'll just have to be on the lookout.

Nope.
That said, it depends on your build if you can use HCU client to unlock. (Was patched in May 2018).
But there are a few services, all are down at the moment though.

My exact same reasons for moving away a couple months ago to oneplus 6 and I haven't regretted it for one moment.
Huawei pulled the plug on advanced users and as you can see on this forum the support has been killed subsequently where as oneplus has HUGE community support.
My primary phone right now, with xxx-no-limtis-rom, magisk, xposed and after dedicating my time it gives me a full two days of mild usage time. I passed my mate 10 pro to my daughter but she doesn't get more than one day. Pitty, it's a nice phone with good hardware, but having a manufacturer decide for me what I can do with my phone is just outrageous.
Sorry to flog a dead horse, but has there been any progress in getting bootloaders unlocked for Mate 10 Pros? I wanted to root mine ages ago, but stupidly dropped it and broke the screen. It's taken me a while to get around to replacing the screen and now it's good t ogo, but in that time it appears that all means to root it are no longer valid.
It is a BLA-L09 single-im Mate 10 Pro, which is at stock EMUI and Android of 8.0.0, with build 8.0.0.133(C782) and security patch 1st October 2018. Can anyone give me a definite answer as to whether I can root this, and if so, how?

You can, but you will need to disassemble your phone. You will need to use test-point to write board firmware, then use HCU Client while on board firmware to get unlock code. After this you repair imeis and stuff using HCU, else you will have no imeis or network. There's a lot of work for the code xD When you've repaired you need to flash a dload firmware, preferably 8.0 but it needs to be from after May 2018.
If you plan on using EMUI10 you won't need the unlock code as Huawei removed the ability to unlock altogether, even with the code...
It can be tricky getting the back off as it's IP rated. If you replaced screen yourself you probably have opened it already
Let me know if you want to do it, I can assist you on Telegram.
Also please note that a HCU Client/DC Phoenix license is needed, it's $19ish for 3 days of usage. And you will need BLA Board firmware. Dload to 8.0.0.133(C782) can be found for free on androidhost.ru.

Thanks ante0, appreciate the offer. I had a friend change the screen for me (i'm more software than hardware) so will ask them and see. Sounds like a lot of work. Damn Huawei.
Not using the 10 pro, but normal mate 10 with emui 10. I have option in developer options to enable oem unlock which might be bootloader unlock. and I have unlock code saved from emui 8.
1) Is there a point in unlocking bootloader if there is no development on roms? And is there even a way to root it with an unlocked bootloader anyways
2) I didn't want to lose data trying it if there was no benefits to unlocking it
3) I kind of forgot how to unlock it anyways, if someone had old instructions, I'd be open to testing if it works up to the point of actually doing it because I don't want to lose data.

It doesn't matter if it's Mate 10 Pro or Mate 10,on EMUI 10 you won't be able to unlock the bootloader, even if you have the code.
And no, root is not possible without unlocking the bootloader.

On AliExpress on almost all listings on Huawei devices (P20 Pro for instance) there is the option to buy it with a flashed Global ROM. And they do this without unlocking the bootloader.
How do they do it? Is it that the bootloader on the Chinese version is unlocked?
For example...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/huawei-p20-pro/how-to/guide-force-update-using-firmware-t3963074
This is just a stock rom, you can download an update.zip and install it via recovery no problem.
Don't make the mistake of thinking this is a custom rom like AOSP it isn't.
It's completely stock, all P20 Pro devices come with an open OS afaik, then when you turn it on with your SIM it binds to the carrier / location, least that's my understanding of it.
But 100% not a custom ROM.

What do you mean by an "open OS"?
My Huawei device has a locked bootloader, and I didn't find any way on the internet to unlock it yet. (There is a site that offers leaked unlock codes from Huawei itself for 50$ but I won't pay this much). Consequently, so far I've only been able to install official Huawei ROMs only.
*Huawei has stopped to officially offer unlock codes since a year as of now.

It's quite easy.
Open OS, as in its just a stock ROM. Nothing more.
