Remove blasted update notification - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I have auto update downloads switched off yet still I am notified in my drop down that there is a software update. I can delay it but it keeps coming back, quicker each time. I own this device, paid for in cash and I want to choose whether I have an update notification or not. After an insane amount of googling it appears that there is no way to stop this notification??
Will the update eventually auto download and auto update?

This isn't Windows. It won't do something you told it not to do. As far as hiding the notification, have you tried swiping right on the notification, not to dismiss is, but to show the notification options. Just swipe a little bit to reveal the options icon, then tap on it and see if that takes you to the notification settings where you can individually disable certain specific notifications from an app.

Yes I have tried that and no you cannot suppress that particular notification. There is no option to do so.

I figured it would be a long shot. Only other advice I have is to root your phone. When your phone is rooted, you can't update it anymore as it's none official. Because it's none official, the auto-update checker basically just time-out when it's checking for updates, hence it won't give you notifications. But I'm sure you know, rooting it brings other potential problem which I'm assuming you're avoiding and why you aren't rooted already.
TL;DR - I have no other advice.

I have got my battery life and stability as good as it is ever going to be, and previous experience with both Android & iOS tells me that at some point an update will come which slows my phone down and/or reduces the battery life. As this is my phone and I own it outright I should be able to prevent my phone updating and I should be able to remove the notifications which are annoying & take up real estate in my drop-down bar. Samsung will at some point stop sending updates so why can I not opt out myself??

I think you can disable that using an app like Package Disabler, etc. Try refining the search with that modifier.

Your thoughts on Android 5.0?

So the finial version has come out. Im sure a lot of you guys have updated to it. Plus a lot of you have been using the Dev version along the way.
What are your guys thoughts?
I like the the new version but also there are still tons of things are are bugging the *poop* out of me.
I thought this was going to be "THE" version that appeased almost all android fans. Fixed a lot the issues since 2.3 while bringing a lot of new features.
1st the things i dont like.
1. Battery % WHY THE *heck* do we still not have an option to turn on a battery % next to the battery icon?????!!!!!!!
2. Hangouts picture (when syncing with FB) not always showing up bug is still present.
3. I like the new light colors with white and grey but why did they choose that color of teal. Im not super excited about that but i do like the white backgrounds.
4. Multitask menu. I dont like how EVERYTHING is in there. And why do we STILL NOT HAVE A CLEAR ALL
5. Google Now launcher. I like it and dont like it. Dont like how everything is so big and dont like how i cant have the middle space be my default. But Nova fixed that. Plus im rooted so i changed my DPI
6. Battery life. Ive only used it for 1 day (going on 1 day) but it seems my battery life is worse then on 4.4.4
7. Battery menu. Dont like anything about it.
Things i do like.
1. Material design (in most places) animations and universal layout for apps is nice.
2. Lockscreen notifications although i dont like how EVERYTHING is on there but im still messing with the menu for this feature.
Im still playing with it and im sure it will get better as apps update (what took them so long) but over all im kinda disappointed with the amount of hype 5.0 got.
Same here, like it but meh it's not there yet, hoping for apps updates etc. And my battery life is slightly worse too
I like it so far, but smart lock seems buggy as hell. I've got my Moto 360 set up as a trusted device, and even went so far as to set up face unlock, and still, I'm prompted for a passcode more often than not. There really needs to be a rescan option -- or, better yet, just make it work like it's supposed to.
Battery life seems worse for me too but I will give it another few days before really making that decision
Make sure you turn WiFi always scanning off. I am getting better than the Dev preview because of the fixed WiFi drain bug. I like it though.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
You cant know anything about battery one day after update, after update system still need some time to "sit on place" and its drains battery.
Where is material design music. Sadly it doesn't animate when I press the play button. I really like what was was shown in the demo .

I have my moto 360 set up as a trusted device and I never need to unlock my phone. Only on reboot. rest of the time works perfectly.
Im not using face unlock though.
hmmm...
i don't like how you'not able to delete multiple contacts + separation of the phone numbers from the emails.
photos app gather all the jpg files that are in the sdcard which kinda sucks (dude, i don't need my album art in my photo gallery.) + you need Google+ enabled to be able to just look at the photos.
multitask is OMG.... really really nice effect but damn, is there any real need to "mark" every menu page i open? (oh, where's the "clear all" button?)
camera is ok but there is no 0.03 seconds of the new API. pictures are taken as slow as before.
material design is not bad but it shines on multiple layers only.
keyboard is really cool looking and although it'll take some time to get used to "button-less buttons" i do like it.
and battery, well, i can't say since it's only 1 day of use.
still, i think it's going to be ok (i still hate those wakelocks though... ) and last but not least, Chrome... i still miss "text wrapping" that's why i use Opera
all in all, i don't hate it, i'm not thrilled about it but i'm sure it'll "grow on me".
UI looks definitely great, performance and battery haven't improved, nor got worse. But it's too early to comment on that.
No toggle in quick settings to cycle through sound modes(sound/silent,vibrate), dafuq Google? I'm certainly missing Xposed.
very annoyed about the removal of the stock email app, i dont want to comingle gmail and my work stuff.

Really? I cant find it. Ended buying 'nine'
I really like having all my emails in gmail app. First day of use, I'm going to get 4hrs sot without messing with settings. It runs really smooth with hells kernel. I would like the pull downs yo have more options, but all in all, I'm happy.

I've used Power Toggles for quite a while now. Short simple and to the point and it lets me toggle between sound vibrate or silent settings easily.

I haven't had to enter my PIN once since I set up smart lock with my 360 and face yesterday. Works great!
You can't use the Photos app if you disable the Google+ app. So.... now I have to open the camera app and scroll through my pictures one by one to view them. Super!
I kinda don't like it.
1: The color scheme is not consistent throughout, which really irritates me. While you spend most of your time in a launcher (I use Nova pesonally) or in apps, some of those apps are system apps, and it seems like almost all of them have had color changes, they don't look good and don't even make sense.
2: Some of the features are cool, and even sound great...but they are commonly riddled with "omg, no way!" points of frustration. Smart-lock...would be AWESOME if it would just freaking work when connected to a specific wifi network! For example...in prior versions I had used tasker and secure settings to disable the lock screen and have a significantly longer screen timeout whenever I was connected to my home wifi. Tasker works just fine for the other things I use it for, such as reading my text messages outloud...but only when I'm connected to my home wifi or headphones. But the pin lock errors out, every single time. Root works, tasker and secure settings are configured exactly as they were before, and they both even have administrative rights. It still fails every time, and I get the toast message pop up. I wonder if it is because Google is worried that your neighbor might name their wifi network to the same as yours is, and have it be an open network so when they steal your phone they would automatically be able to get into it. If that is the case...well, that should be easy to fix, one make the service only work with password protected networks, and I'm also sure they could just only have it work when the network name is also reporting the same mac address. But I digress.
3: Lightflow. Ugh, enough said. You might say this is not a lollipop specific thing, but the guy posted an inquiry on this on the support thread since it was an complication with the new notification system, and they responded back saying they fixed it, and it has still not been pushed out by Google yet!
4: I find myself unable to quickly remove notifications from the lock screen and even when the phone is unlocked in some instances. For example, if I am copying lots of individual files over wifi from my computer, and there are multiple "copied" notifications as a result, the first few can be swiped away, but the rest can't! I have to click on them, and then close it. Kinda annoying.
5: One of the only reasons why I really wanted Lollipop were for the improvements to the lockscreen notifications. I envisioned being able to stop using dashclock entirely, and also having an all around easier time with notifications while the phone was locked. Nope! Sure, the basic functionality is good, I can read text messages without an app for it, and that's great...but I have to say I really miss having the unlock ability from just turning the phone on and swiping. Now I have to turn the phone on, press the padlock to get the phone to switch to the pattern lock, then do the pattern lock. That extra step is really quite annoying for me. I'd prefer to have the "extra step" be to SEE THE NOTIFICATIONS. You know, just like how it used to be with dashclock. (You would know you had a notification by the little icon right next to the time and you would swipe down from there to read them) Maybe I'm crazy, but I unlock my phone a lot more often than I have notifications to read. Especially since I can't get the pinlock automatic toggle to work when I am connected to my home wifi!
6: Most lock screen icons are blocked...and for good reason. But some of them are not. For example, in power toggles I have always used an icon that automatically makes a 14 minute timer, and another one for 29 minutes. I use this for my breaks at work of course. (The icon triggers a task in the "Trigger" app that does this) This works from the lockscreen...which sounds great because I can set that timer without having to unlock my phone...but it has also been deactivated by mistake when the phone was in my pocket. Ugh!
7: I don't like the "swipe down" from either the lock screen or from notifications bar option. A lot of this is because I am really used to using powertoggles for this, and this duplicates a lot of that functionality, but
I knew this was going to happen, I have been complaining about software "improvements" at work for the last year and a half. If something is working, don't break it!

Yeah, I've figured out the issue. I use "Gravity Screen" to shut my device down when I put it in my pocket. It seems that if Gravity Screen puts the device into standby, it also locks the screen in such a way that Smart Lock is disabled. Since that's normally how I shut off my device, I was seeing this almost every time. I'm hoping that the dev can fix this, because I'm really not used to touching my power button.
On another note. I wouldn't mind the email integration with Gmail, except that there's no way to label my various Exchange accounts. I have two separate Exchange accounts that I must monitor, and both simply show as a random-colored circle with a letter "J" (which is the first letter of each email address). I can't even change the color to something that would help distinguish the accounts. I just have to remember that random-color-J #1 equals one account, and random-color-J #2 equals another. It's very annoying. A combined inbox certainly wouldn't hurt, either.

[GUIDE] Fix WiFi delayed notifications

After testing and testing, I finally fixed my delayed notifications problems and disconnection problem with apps like webwhatsapp and airdroid
I hope this can help others that have the same problem that I had. I hope this work for everyone.
Steps:
Disable Advanced Battery Optimization: Deep and Sleep
Disable Adaptive Battery
Disable optimize battery for the apps(maybe this isnt needed since I am getting notifications on time from apps that have this enabled)
Run this command via ADB or Android Emulador(this is disabledwhen you restart the phone so you need to run again):
dumpsys deviceidle disable
This is tricky, you may need to root your phone for it. You have to edit the build.prop this is located inside the system folder
Find this 2 lines
ro.vendor.qti.sys.fw.bservice_limit=5 - > I changed it to 120
ro.vendor.qti.sys.fw.bservice_age=5000 -> I changed to 10000
Lock your apps you want to receive notifications(maybe you don't need this)
But go to overview mode, click the 3 dots above the app and choose Lock
I locked my google play service too, just in case
Go to dial, and dial *#*#426#*#* this will open the GCM service(google play service) this is the guy that handles notifications.
After it is open, go to overview, 3 dots and lock it.
Now I have notifications in time, and my webwhatsapp or airdroid never lose the connection because the phone went to sleep mode.
For battery, I must say I did not noticed it got worst in FACT I think it got better, since now I can play(ragnarok eternal) for more time than I was playing before.

I own Oneplus 5, and have similar problem but my notifications does not work at all, until I wake up the device, no matter what.
Have all sleep options OFF, it doesn't help. But I heavily use Goole Pay, so I don't wan't to loose SafetyNet cert.
How can I do this change permanent? I think OnePlus never confessed that they screwed this notifications things up. And I have 8GB of RAM, and they are killing each app...

Question Review app with full device access! Review app with full device access!

So, I use Nova Launcher on my Pixel 7 and the accessibility service permission so I can double-tap the screen to turn it off. Ever since the November security update (I believe) I've been getting nagged with notifications to review an app with full device access (Nova7) every few days--it may have gotten more frequent with the December security update. I get annoyed, tap the notification, get annoyed, tap the X to say "yeah, I know what this app is," get annoyed again and continue with my day.
Any way to...basically permanently mark an app as trusted so I don't get these notifications every few days? Not a huge issue if I can't, but I thought I'd make my first post about something annoying, just to brighten everyone's day.
I must say I love this phone, especially compared to my old OnePlus 5T.

I don't know what the mechanism or algorithm is but I think these just go away after a while. At least they did for me. I use Nova and Tasker and got a few reminders on each and then they just stopped.
I get them frequently since I have multiple apps with full permissions. Takes me no time to dismiss them so they're not really bothering me. Rather have the alerts than have my phone get compromised and never know it.
My Pixel 5 android 13 does this as well. Every day I get a notification about the same app that I've already dismissed many times already, saying they have full device access and I should review permissions. This gets super annoying. I, too, would like to know how to disable those notifications or "whitelist" the app.

Exactly the same situation for me. You can't even disable these types of notifications. While I understand why this is the case, there should definitely be a way to whitelist specific apps or Android should at least reduce the frequency of when they notifications appear.
Also chiming in to say I have this issue and am quite frustrated with it. Pixel 7 Pro and Nova Launcher Accessibility Service as others have noted.
I use TidyPanel to hide system notifications, I cannot normally hide.
Perfect for VoWiFi notification and probably your case.
yep...nova, rotation control pro, and several others that have draw-over and other elevated permissions. pointless notifications are my pet peeve. i know it has permissions. i gave it permission. this is linux. duh i love how user friendly android has gotten, but it feels so dumbed down sometimes.
I'm also getting this notification every day or so, and it's driving me nuts. Part of me could understand if Nova Launcher or its paid version were updating that often, but they're not. It took me forever to confirm they weren't updated for the last few months because the notification saying which apps were updated, while enabled, isn't showing up at all - but that's a whole other problem.

Just an idea, Maybe try disabling "Google play protect services" in Settings/Apps/ Google play protect services, or at least notifications. Also in Google play, try shutting off "App scanning".
Whoa! I need to turn on notifications if there are replies in a thread I started. I thought notify if quoted would have sufficed but looks like I missed a lot of stuff!
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

Question Fix for Notifications in Dark Mode?

I found the following info on some Chinese sites about how to fix notifications (also in dark mode?). The problem seems that Vivo.pem or vivo kills the google play services to save battery - thereby killing many notifications too.
Fix is a clutch but could work even with .pem not removed.
Open Vivo phone - dial *#*#426#*#*
Then lock the open FCM diagnostics play services app in the recent apps drawer by putting the lock symbol.
Needs to be done after every reboot and you must not manually remove the app by swiping it up. You can save quick dial codes in your contacts (as they will not be saved to the recent call list).
The problem is - play services cannot be added to autostart...
Seems to be working for a start for me - but not sure if it really does. Info from here: https://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=754&t=6723285
Edit: so far it seems to be working for me. I will not dare to try what happens if I enable power saving mode - because each time so far that meant I would need to reset all permissions for some apps like Signal even after disabling as they would then miss notifications. But dark mode seems to be usable.
Doesn't really work for dark mode. What the above does is, that it removes the need to remove vivo.pem - but if you activate dark mode then notifications will not arrive after a certain time of no use - like 10 minutes or so.
Dark mode therefore is still broken (tested mainly with gmail).
some of our guys on telegram emailed vivo and they said that an update is coming to fix dark mode

yeah, what vivo (support) tells and what actually happens has always been a big discrepancy... It's been several updates and dark mode still broken. With the above fix of locking the FCM window it just works a bit differently to no notification at all, but no notification at all if phone has been idle for some minutes.
It's a feature not a bug...
And yeah the alternative is to install another notification app altogether - but I am pretty sure that will decrease battery life as you then have an active pull instead of the standard android push for notifcations which uses very little battery. Or use dark mode and install "heartbeeat fixer for GCM" and set it to 1 minute to force the phone to never sleep.... Both not good solutions.
Actually the only updates available were on trial so let's see if they actually release something.

Question What could be breaking through Do Not Disturb and how do I chance notifications sort order?

I've got two questions which are related. I have Do Not Disturb on my phone set up to start each night at 10 PM, and not go off until 8 AM the next day. For some reason I've been awaken several mornings, early in the morning (between 4 and 5 AM). A single beep as if it's coming from a social media app with someone informing me that they've posted a picture of their toenail clippings. Why am I getting these EXTREMELY IRRITATING NOTIFICATIONS??????????????????????????
Second question. I have tried to find what notification it is that comes through in the wee hours of the morning, but it is impossible for me to find it, unless I spend hours scrolling through all notifications in the Notifications center. That's because the default sort order is by category. Is it possible to change the default sort order to chronological order, with most recent at the top? That would help immensely.
You didn't mention searching Settings. Did you search there for that feature's keyword?
It comes up quickly with the keyword search as disturb.

Excellent question. I didn't search Settings because I thought all settings had been transferred by Samsung's Smart Switch app, when I migrated things off my old phone to my new phone. I know that other settings had been migrated, so I thought all settings had been migrated. Well, it turns out that I was wrong. It turns out that the Do Not Disturb settings had not been migrated. In fact, it wasn't even turned on. So, I turned that on and reset the dates/times. So, my bad. However, like I said, other settings had been moved. I hadn't considered the possibility that not all settings hadn't been migrated.

@Rod F it's possible, but you need GoodLock. After you download GoodLock you have to download QuickStar module for Goodlock and there you can change the notification sorting.
