Anyone else having issues with the note 9 and android auto? I no longer receive texts to Android auto when connected. I can send but not notifications come through.
Yes, all permissions and access to notifications are set. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. Deleted the phone from my car. Reset the Google app as well.
Nothing seems to be working. I'm thinking it's just an issue with the android auto app and being a new phone. Likely just needs an update to the app to fix the issue. At least I hope.
If you have android auto and a note 9, please test this out and report back.
I haven't had any issues with Android Auto on my Note9. Are you using any apps to disable services. I had a similar issue with my Note8 and it ended being a service disabled.
No, nothing that would disable it.
So get this now. I have hard reset my note 9 to see if this would fix it. It did not. I decided to try installing Google Messages. It works. Android auto and incoming texts works with this app. Just not the stock Samsung messages app. Has to be something with that app. I'll use Google messages until there is an update and then give it a try again.
Quite annoying though. I really don't mind the Samsung messages app.
Hi, I have a similar problem, Note 9 with Alpine iLX-702d Head unit, as soon as you plug the cable into the phone to start the setup utility for AA, the app closes. not cool
I do have a note 9 since last saturday. I already could work with android auto with no problem. Today i connected the phone and i was unable to use android auto. No update have been done.
My android Auto disconnects on its own randomly. OEM head unit in a VW Jetta 2019. Note 9 is a Tmobile unit that I just setup. Not sure it is related but I also have Android Wear problems where the bluetooth disconnects all the time, and I have to put my phone and watch in airplane mode and back again just to get it to connect.
Using Android Auto with my Note 9 lags for about 4 seconds on every touch input so is pretty much unusable. Have tried rebooting the device and head unit (Honda Civic 2017).
Have a Peugeot 2008 2017
Just can't seem to get android auto to work
When I open android auto app on my note 9 it just says "something went wrong
Google play services doesn't seem to be working at the moment. "
If I connect the USB to car it keeps connecting then disconnecting over and over, gutted as apple carplay connects flawlessly ?
Any help would be appreciated
Mine works better than my note 8 device. No misses yet.
And I use it on my commute everyday to work and back.

Have a 2018 focus st with AA. TMO note 9. I have zero problems with it so far. All messages come through on stock. Ok google works with no button push. And Facebook messenger works good as well as Waze.
I've got a Hyundai i30, and AA was working perfectly until I updated my Note 9 to the September patch. Now it disconnects after a random amount of time, usually 2-4 seconds, sometimes up to 15 seconds.
Very frustrating!
When I plug my Note9 into my 2016 F150 the bottom on-screen buttons on Android Auto freeze and do nothing when you tap them then the whole bottom line turns into a black bar. The only way to Navigate between screens in Android Auto is to pull the cord from the phone and make your new selection.

I'm glad to see it's not an issue with just my Note9. I'm sure it'll be fixed in no time since it looks like a widespread issue.

Same exact black bar issue started happening to my Note 9 with a 2016 Ford Escape, since last week. I thought I was going crazy. Uninstall, reinstall, works for a ride, and then breaks again.

I am having issues as well with my Note 9 and android auto. When I use google maps, it will work for a few minutes and then it goes out. Google maps will never stay up for more than a few minutes. Is it just an issue with the app? I just bought a new car and want to be able to use android auto!

I´ve bought an Opel Astra K and I want to use Android Auto, but the car screen is always black.
The supossed requirements to run Android Auto is to have a phone with Android 5.0. I have an Elephone P7000 with Android 5.0 and Android Auto installed. When I try to use it in my car, Android Auto starts in my phone (I see the black screen which shows "Android Auto" title) but the screen in my car is always in black.
Could someone tell me what I need to run Android Auto with my phone and my car?
Should I buy a new phone for this end?
Thanks and regards

I guess to have Android 5.0 is not the only requisite to use Android Auto... maybe Google should take a look on this..

I tried with Huawei P8 lite and Moto G 1st gen (both 5.0) and I got nothing. It works with Nexus 5
Moto G 1st gen the same
Also Moto G 4G
I had the same problem in my Astra.
I've solved it following this steps:
- Wait until the bluetooth connection is fully established.
- Unlock the smartphone (i think is key for this problem)
- Plug the USB cable.
I'm doing it that way since last two weeks and i haven't seen the black screen again on my Intellilink.
Hope it helps.
I have same problem whit samsung A5 (android 5.1).
And secound problem with android auto app (ver. 1.5) in huawei p8lite.
I try connecting phone (android 5.0.1) to opel Astra k.
It works but doesn't refresh screan.
I must tourn on or down the volumne and then screan updates.
Any idea ?
Any workaround about this issue? I'm having the same problem with my Honor 7. Already contacted the Opel Team but that issue seemed to be new to them. I guess it's rather and android/google problem than that of the carmaker. A friend of mine is having the same problems with his Huawei Smartphone, while his wife's Samsung is working.
Both Huwaei/Honor phones run with Android 5 and 6, respectively....
I have an Opel Adam with the Intellilink system. I have the same problem, when connecting Android Auto all I get is a black screen. Sometimes it works and when it does it's really reliable. But it is very rare that it works. I have tried a dozen different phones.
I was wondering if you have Flexdock on your Astra? I have Flexdock on my Adam and I have been thinking if this has something to do with it.
By the way, Apple Carplay seems to work okay. It connects every time but I would prefer using Android.

Same here. These steps didn't help me.
And to add to the misery, AA stopped working completely. The app won't launch anymore when connecting the phone to the car. I'm not getting the black AA splash screen anymore and the car's head unit won't recognize the connection. So I kinda got rid of the black screen problem I have tried clearing cache, uninstall followed by reinstall, pretty much everything besides restoring the phone to factory settings.

There appears to be major problems with Android Auto and Intellilink 4.0. My car has been into the dealer 3 times in 3 weeks (only just bought it!) And Vauxhall have drawn a blank on what's going on, although Vauxhall have confirmed they know there are problems with their system. I've also got Google on the case analysing debug outputs from my phone by the Android Auto team at Mountain View.
So long as you have installed Android Auto on your phone and responded to the setup prompts, that's all you can do. My car touchscreen often just blanks when I connect the phone too. It is driving me mad.

Okay, that figures. I remember now reading something about Opel/Vauxhall knowing about this problem before. I contacted Opel too and they told me visit the dealer but after what you told, I guess I will pass and let them work it out first.

I've booked my car in with the vauxhall dealer to have it looked at... However when i said my problem was with android auto, the guy said "what's android auto?" :crying:
So I'm not filled with hope.... On the upside however, I contacted vauxhall head office and a very helpful lady (who knew what android auto was!) said that because it works sometimes, the issue lies with their system and not android auto (so potentially fixable without Google...
She said that there have been a few similar complaints aswell but these were resolved....fingers crossed because it's great when it works... Will update

Would you mind letting us know if the dealer was able to do anything to fix this? I would be interested to hear anything you could tell after the service.
I really hate being stuck on an iPhone and Carplay, which has its problems too, it keeps dropping connection randomly

It used to work at times, but most of the time I would just get that same annoying black screen. But now it won't even give black screen anymore, nothing happens when plugging an Android phone.

So I took it to the dealer and after explaining to them what android auto actually is!! We plugged the phone in and it worked. 10 times in a row....I hate intermittent problems .
So the guy said there was nothing they could do since it was working now but to bring it back if it stops again.... Getting the S7 edge next week so will wait and see how that works.... Apologies i haven't got a better answer for you...
Workaround that works 100% of the time for those having trouble connecting.
Unlock phone and turn on car or head unit. Note you should have android auto installed already before this will work. Plug in the cable to your phone and you will hear the link sound and the screen on your phone will flash off for just a second. As quickly as possible once the screen goes black on your phone uncable the phone and reconnect it. I know this sounds janky, but it really works. You can tell it is working by the screen on your head unit going black in the background and you will see the android auto icon sI have tried all suggested fixes and this is the only one that works 100% of the time. It also does not take over the telephone's display so you can navigate to other apps and still have android auto running. It is quick and gives you the best of both worlds. I almost returned my 2016 gti due to the frustration from this issue, but now it is no big deal.
Hope this helps guys and gals.
No. For what I read , the only API available for 3rd parties are to send messages and music, and that, using google interface. No other developer can do anything with AA.
In waze I cant press the buttons on the screen where they are toward the bottom. For example after I have selected a route and it is navigating, if I want to check routes manually I have to tap the screen about 1/2" above where the ">" is for it to work.
I cant even push the button for posting a report. Nothing happens.
This all started after my note 9 updated on verizon.
Using beta 4.44.0.900
I realize this probably related to the phone update, but my Pocket Cast app buttons seem to be fine.
This also appears to happen in google maps.

I got the Verizon update on the 26th, and have had zero issues since. Now, I can't speak for the beta Waze app, but non-beta works fine, and I use it every day. And there's nothing wrong with Google Maps, either.

Well crap. I had the regular version of waze on there and installed the beta trying to fix it. It does it in google maps too. I even went so far as to uninstall it and reinstall.
I am in a 2018 Chevy Volt for reference. I use it everyday as well and it is annoying. I cant find any settings anywhere to adjust any of it.
Update. Found some other users with the same problem

Short answer: Try turning off Performance mode, or changing your phones resolution from WQHD+ to FHD+
That is til they fix it.
I never had issues with Android Auto in my 2017 Civic until the ARJ5 update yesterday.
Now I can't press any buttons on the navigation screen. Using beta maps.
I tried to use Waze, non beta I downloaded it, and it had hard time registering presses. Even misaligned presses, I try to click home, and it selects work underneath it.
Wife's phone works just fine, S9+

That might explain why I have seen no issues... mine is set to FHD+.
This is also an issue with the TMO update to the Note 9 they pushed on 11/18. I had to set mine to FHD+ for it to properly do Waze/Google Maps & Android Auto. I'll bet this isn't fixed until Samsung pushes Android 9.0 since AA users seem to get little love these days.
Same Issue, but found out why.

I started having the same issue, and changing the screen resolution solved it. It started happening again and again, but then I realized that my Samsung VR headset makes me change the screen resolution back to WQHD+. This makes it a little annoying to have to go in and change it back each time. I now added a switch on my main screen to change the resolution quickly.

I started with that as well and finally settled on Macrodroid to make my own toggle switch. Unfortunately, I also had to root my phone to get access to the screen resolution.
glad i found this page. i've been dealing with this issue since first patches in November on my att note9. will test resolution change later today.
It's been reported on the Google AA community that Pie fixes this. Well, I can say that the Oreo December security patch (on Verizon Wireless, at least) fixed this issue as well. I've been on WQHD+ since.
Hello all,
I have the 960U1 US Unlocked version of the Note 9 I've had since Day 1 release of last August. It's quite the powerhouse of a phone, and has everything of what you want in a smartphone. I was aggravated by how late the Pie update came, but I never expected how many issues came along with that changed the user experience since Oreo. After updating to Pie, I did a factory reset for a clean run but then I ran into these following issues:
Download, installing, and uninstalling apps from the Play store: I've tried to download apps, which get stuck at 99% or 100%, but then just hangs there to not install. Same thing with uninstalling. It'll say uninstall for an abnormally long time.
GPS issues: I travel frequently on weekends. Sometimes I would like to pull up my Google Maps timeline to review where I went and at what times. One weekend, I went out of town 3 hours away from home and yet my timeline showed me saying I stayed all day and night where my Home location is. Map guidance still worked, but it still showed me that my "current location" was still being at home.
Bluetooth Power indicator pop up: This is a recent issue I found that other Samsung users in other forums encountered as well. I have a Sony WI-1000x Bluetooth neckband that does extremely well for all the bells and whistles it does. I've noticed that after I factory reset again after experiencing the previous 2 issues to get them fixed, there is a pop up that keeps appearing every 10 or so seconds that tell me my headset is battery at 100%. I have found no way of disabling that, and I had to unpair/pair my headset as well as clear Bluetooth data in System App settings to try and get rid of it. Good thing it hasn't been doing that after several tries, but now there is another issue with BT.
Bluetooth notification sound output: I've noticed when my BT is connected, I don't hear notifications from my text messaging app, e-mail, Arlo, and social media apps. I've checked to see that my Sound settings are all up and running as it should be. Then I went to try and play a notification sound, and nothing came out of my phone speakers. It only played through the headset itself, and that's an annoyance as I don't wear them all the time in my ear unless I'm using it for phone calls or listening to media. It seems to be an Android Pie issue and I have yet to find a permanent solution as this wasn't an issue before on Oreo. The only workaround I've found is using the SmartThings Audio Output toolbar in the Notifications drop down and select to play Media from my device. The notification sounds work then, and I can still answer calls through my headset. But it's a dumb issue that I have to manually set this whenever I want to go back to listening media.
The Note 9 is a great phone despite the small shortcomings it had before the Pie update. Now it's after the Pie update, all these issues come up and I don't understand what happened in what Samsung did. I'm almost tempted in calling Samsung to ask if my phone just somehow became defective, but I don't want to have something done and they send me some refurbished model when I kept my phone in near mint condition. What are your guys' thoughts about the issues I've had and what solutions would you suggest?

Hey GigaSPX, noting you have a 960U1 US Unlocked, I've been working on this step-by-step for a 960U1:
Confirm These Steps to Downgrade US Unlocked SM-N960U1 from Pie to Oreo
If you decide to go this route, take a look and share your experience.
Thanks for the links and guide tips to downgrade to Oreo, but I enjoy One UI too much to give up on that user experience. I still have my Note 8 and I know it benefited significantly from the pie update to have it last all day unlike before on Oreo.

You're welcome.
Good to know about your Pie experience on your Note 8.
So here's a wierd one. Have a SM-N960U1 on Android 9. Everything's been fine but as of last Friday every time it pairs with a Bluetooth device (headphones, car, etc.) it starts calling itself? I re-paired all devices, turned BT off and back on, restarted phone, etc., but this behavior persists. Music is also terrible during this time, but realized by accident when I press Device Care widget to optimize phone the BT device announces 'Call Ending', and music again sounds great. However there's no record of any outgoing call in Phone App. I didn't realize what # was being called until I got in my car and saw it was dialing itself, but again, this phantom call does not show up in Recent Calls history? Any ideas?
Ugh... Same
Same man. Just letting you know you're not alone and following for a resolution.
smart lock on?
Removed all trusted devices from smart lock and it still happened.
Did a support Chat with Samsung, they recommended a soft reset (Vol dn + Power, similar to a Battery pull) which solved it temporarily when I turned on Bluetooth but since then the bug continues. No new updates or setup changes I'm aware of before this started happening. They also suggested running in safe mode and disabling Apps one at a time to see if the issue can be isolated (aren't these supposed to 'be' smartphones? Evidently there's no log of what it's doing) Will try that or another Chat session when I get some time again.
Ive been having this issue for a week or so as well. Every time I get in my car, I have to end the call. Its got to be a software update that caused the issue.
I'm thinking now it could be related to Bixby. I don't use it (remapped to google assistant & flashlight on long press using bxActions) but I recall I allowed it to update recently in case it gets better in the future.
Same issue here ... Sprint Note 9 on Pie ... Bluetooth headphones even has issues. I have to make a phone call and end it to be able to control volume from the headset (changing it from in-call audio to media audio).
Yup, those are the symptoms. Bluetooth headphones sound terrible and has no device control until the 'phantom' call that starts on it's own is manually ended.
I had this same problem and finally narrowed it down to a single app. In my case, it was the RC Phone (Ring Central) app. Upon contacting the vendor, they confirmed it was a known issue with a recent update.
With it uninstalled I have no issues.
Good luck

Awesome tip!
I use Ring Central App for keeping up with work phone messages. A few days ago started the phone in safe mode and had no BT issue, then back in 'un-safe' mode at first it didn't happen but cycling the headphones on and off it did occur again so I was faced with narrowing it down to which App. After reading your post I went into RC Phone settings, Mobile App Settings, Default Launching, and turned off 'Call From Android Dialer' since I don't use that feature and so far no issue!
Thanks for the tip, hopefully this setting change continues to solve this.
Still good after a couple days and weekly auto phone restart (Sat @ 3:00 AM). So nice not to have to end a phantom call that interrupts the stereo after 10 seconds every time I start the car.
Thanks again for the RC Phone tip.
You guys are definitely not alone. I unfortunately do not use the ring central app so I am not sure what is causing it for me...
I'm on the note 10 and have only had this problem pop up recently out of nowhere... I have no idea what could be my problem as I do not have RC Phone installed on my phone
Possible Solution
Hey, I posted a few days ago about having this same problem and not being a user of ring central. I got to thinking and tested this out. The Voxer app was the issue for me. I uninstalled this app and I haven't had any problems since. I am not sure about why the most recent Voxer update caused my phone to start doing this but I hope this helps someone else.
Possible Solution
Some may have tried this. Let me know.
My wife has Honda Hands Free 2016. In the past 30 days it started this same freaky behavior as all of you list.
She has a Samsung s9+.
She also has had Voxer installed on her phone and has had for many years. I will have to check to see if a recent update hit.
But, this is what seems to work for me at this point........
Told Honda Hands Free to completely forget her s9+. Then disabled blue tooth on the s9+.
Turn Entire Honda car off.
Turn Honda back on, told it to connect to my Samsung phone SM-J320A. Verified Honda was connecting properly to my SM-320A with no issues. All good with no freaky behavior. As info Voxer is not installed on my SM-320A.
Turned bluetooth back on s9+ then added the Samsung s9+ back to Honda Hands Free and told it to completely forget my SM-320A.
So far this has stopped the freaky behavior. If it comes back I will update here and then I will try uninstalling Voxer.
