Is the kernel source the only missing thing to make some custom roms kernels?
Pretty much, yes.
and now that they have been released, development can begin
It will take some time because I am building the device-tree as well.

I've read conflicting remarks in the individual threads of various roms, and am thus confused.
Will the official 4.3 update have any helpful effect on the development of completely Sense-less roms like CM and Paranoid Android, or does it only really make a difference for stock-based ones?
I'm pretty sure it will make a difference once we get kernel source. I could be totally wrong. But that's my guess. But i'm pretty sure 4.3 roms are already running well!
Kernel source and vendor binaries are where it will make a difference
it has been a very long time since I played with roms, just wondering if there's anyway to get stock sony kernel to work with Cm, aosp or aokp 4.4.x instead of just 4.3
cheers
hmm, not that i know of
there is a method of making a special kernel to run in the system partition with a custom rom
but this is hard to do because of how much coding is needed for the special kernel
in simple. no, you need a aosp kernel for aosp rom
AOSP based and cm based ROMs haven't been stable as of now,it doesn't mean it lessens affort of developers like akhil or varun but we need stock based ROMs in the meantime if you see nexus 5 forum there you have "catacalysm"
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/orig-development/rom-cataclysm-nexus-5-t2518660)which is most appropriated rom over there. It is essentially a stock rom modified with some gravitybox like features .It even supports RRO layERS. I am not a dev by any mean don't have computer to try out these things but we have well more than capable developers who could develop such ROMs quite easily. What do you think is it worth it?

So Marshmallow kernel sources have been released. I expect that developers will be able to compile custom ROMs and kernels based on these.

Can't wait for first aosp build
Are there currently any custom roms for this phone
without a kernel source, i can't do, device tree are easy to make.
