Xperia XZ1 compact magnetic? - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Questions & Answers

Hi guys and girls,
My phone accidentally fell into a canal. The depth is approximately 5"9 and I can't see the bottom of the canal. I thought of fishing with a magnet because I know more or less where it lies.
Is this possible?
thnx

I tried to attach my phone to a friend's magnetic dashboard mount, and it didn't stick, so i'm afraid it's not ferromagnetic.
Also, the XZ1 indeed is water resistant, but I don't think it can withstand prolonged immersion in torbid water.... i think you should consider your phone lost.

Thnx, I was afraid of that but now I know for sure.

[Q] Are you confident with the water resistant flaps?

The microusb flap on my 2 day old Xperia Z feels loose without any abuse to it. Initially it takes serious effort to pry it open, now it pops open smoothly with little effort. I thought I'd like to try washing my phone but judging on the flap, I'm not feeling comfortable putting the phone near water.
Does these water resistant seals require maintenance/periodic replacement from Sony?
How are the flaps of your phone? Do they still work even after they loosen up?

They loosen up while time passes, if you look the inside of the flaps you will see some kind of rubber coating, as long that's ok your phone should be fine.
Sony stated that the flaps can be opened 5 times a day and still survive for 2 years.
I'm rather worried about the connections to the flaps. They seem to bend rather easily and could prevent the lids from closing correctly.
I always apply some extra pressure before taking my Z near water, just to be safe.

No worries. They're flexible but tough.

Even if they broke - the rubber seals are tight enough for you to close the cover and let it sit there. Those connections dont actually hold the covers in place - they just make sure you won't lose them.
I was dubious about the water proofing but I got drunk and tried it out in the pub the other night....
....phone still works like a charm!

I took mine to the shower about three times already. Even wrote about two texts and watched a few Youtube videos from there without a hitch. I'm definitely confident in them. A bit unrelated by at the same time related; I had a dream last night that I sat on my Z and it warped inwards and shattered from all sides, but upon closer inspection I noticed that it was the side's had a green tint to it as opposed to the regular blue, and that's when I realized that I was dreaming in my dream. I looked around for a bit (I was having dinner with dead celebrities and relatives), thanked them for the dinner and invitation and left (I wanted to start having a lucid dream but I wanted to check my real-life Z if everything is ok. I love the fact that I know my Z so well that I was able to point out its imposter's flaws and wake myself up in such a state of mind.
I've tested it into an aquatic center for more than 4 hours, he still works like a charm :victory:
This phone is just awesome.
I was a bit nervous but yup put it in a jug of water just to test and because it shocks the family. Even took it in the shower this morning and was sending texts!
My Brother, Mum and Dad have all swapped their IPhones for a Xperia Z. It's just cool.
I see you guys \ girls have no fear for water when it comes to Xperia Z.
But the real question here is: Who opens the flaps frequently and is still brave enough to use it under water?
(Reason for asking is, there is a lot of nice stories up here but none of these confirm they open the flaps frequently... and that is what this topic is about.)
Kind regards, Stefan.

Well I personally keep opening my flaps constantly to sync with my Jawbone UP band and when I was testing my OTG cable and no issues. It's just so cool to be able to use in the shower if needed.

i wonder if the microphone or speaker get damaged when you apply a moderate stream of water to the holes..
manual says only use a low output stream of water to clean it.
Thats really bad my xperia Z micro usb flap is damaged i lost the rubber seals and i cant find anyone can repair that IM READY TO PAY 25$ JUST FOR ONE USB FLAP and also i dont have a credit card SO I CANT BUY ONLINE
I kinda sorta accepting that my Z flaps lost their resistance property after one year continuously open and close. So kinda missed those. Now my Z just a normal phone with awesome camera only :/

For me, when you push in the flaps with the top slightly going in first, it goes in loosely
so when you push it in, try and push the top and bottom in evenly, or the bottom ever so slightly in first.
just my experiences with the flaps.
also, oil from your fingers might make the rubber bits slipperly, so try and wipe then on your shirt, cloth or something and see if it helps.
I have a problem with the headphone flap uncovers itself, my phone only has 2 months of use, I could do to fix it? because it is not physically damaged, not even use headphones constantly've only used about 10 times, I hope you can give me some ideas. thanks!!!
Looking for flap replacements?
Here is from Witrigs, tested and proven by many here on XDA. i'm gonna order for my Z1 compact for reserve purposes.

Edit: Guys these are not OEM flaps, sorry about that. Thought so they have OEM flaps like for Z1 and Z1 compact.

[Q] Fresh Water only??

Hi all,
As described by XZR IP58 rating, the water proof capability is 1.5meters for 30 minutes in fresh water only.
I wonder what they really mean, and what will happen if I submerge my phone in other medium, salt water - sea for example.
I mean hey, all these waterproof is just about the water pressure exerting on the phone right?
What if I take the phone and go into the sea for <1meter and <5mins?
Has anyone try that?

seawater may damage the rubber seals. it might leave residue of salt

Its the microscopic salt crystals which could form if not rinsed properly with fresh water which could then corrode the rubber seals.
Not sure if I am going to try it but if you do I would recommend thoroughly rinsing with fresh water after it has been submerged in salt sea water.

just back from 3 days snorkeling trip. had been submerging it in sea water all the time while snorkeling. Nothing big damaged, but got a rusted part measuring about 2x2 mm around the speaker area and some salt residue stuck at the edge of the lower speaker

Since water does get in the back, outside of the battery rubber seal, I am thinking there are plenty of parts there that might be damaged by salt residue. If I put it in salt water, I would make sure to wash it very well after, and also open the back and try to clean somehow the areas outside of the battery rubber seal.

Meh. This is just too lousy. The IP-certification covers 50% of the total area, allowing water to accumulate behind the back cover. Just like the S4. This is just an accident waiting to happen. -Purchase aborted.

For real? Where is the logic in this..first see whats the difference between the 58 and 57 IP Certification.and second if it covers only 50% of the device it will be damaged on the first drop in water...Just watch abit news go on youtube and see what the xperia V that have only 57 cert.did 4 days under whater and they found it at tha bottom of the sea and it was working perfectly.. I don't think that Sony are creating phones which are ''waiting for an accident to happen''ones ^^

what he meant is that the water will go behind the back cover as far as the rubber seals. and when removing the back cover then the remaining water behind the cover may get in direct contact with the exposed battery and other inner eletronics. it is advised to be extremely careful when removing the back cover of a phone that has recently been exposed to water.

Uh,got the point now its true.
Thanks guys for the info.
The battery is indeed vulnerable if you are to open the cover after submerging the phone into water recently.
I will RECONSIDER if I'm on a vacation to seaside.
I have tried mine in Italy for a minute - no more. Then rinsed it later on.
Tiny sandcrystals and remains of salt water - as others already replied correctly - may not be friends.
And also, after a "water session" when everything dried, remove the back and with a cloth dry any tiny spots that INDEED get behind the back.
With time and use the back may seal even worse.
I think however, that the whole phone is sort of sealed (or at least better sealed in general) against water getting behind the back.

Where are the white strips? (which detects presence of water)

Guys I wanna know where these strips are. It was neatly visible in Z, but it's not the case here. I've accidentally dropped my device a small tub of water and I wanna know whether have they turned red. I've accidental damage protection for 6 months given from Sony itself so I would claim based on it. I've opened and checked all the flaps but I didn't find any. If some could post a couple of screenshots on where it is, that would be great.

Mine was damn solid too after the fall. No problems, except the dip in ear piece volume and that was fine either after it got dried. The problem is that I have to check whether the strips have changed color or not!

Look underneath the flaps themselves. I wonder if the white portion on them is what you're looking for. I can't imagine these phones wouldn't have the strips somewhere.

Yep I thought about them too. On the other hand, there's a white lining around the flaps itself. I have a doubt that they might be the one I'm looking for.

drowned my z1 (somehow bent it), straightened it, waterproof?

Hi guys, not quite sure how but I managed to bend my z1, (odd because I'm extremely careful and only ever put it In my breast or side pocket, and am fairly careful) then killed it by going for a bit of a dip with it in my hands (maybe went 0.5m deep), I did not noticed it was bent until closer inspection after I dried it out (rice trick) anyway it works fine now, and I straightened it out (the tiniest bit of pressure brought it straight again, was shocked how easily it bends) but was just wondering if anyone had a pulldown of this thing, I'd like to see where the seals are etc, to make sure nothing would have been put out of place or ruptured. I'm assuming when the phone was bent the seal was spread open.
I tested it in roughly 10cm water for 10 minutes and it works fine still, but was hoping for the guide so I can decide whether I should send it in for repair and straightening or am confident with its abilities as is... Cheers!

Let me get this straight...YOU BENT YOUR PHONE?
Yeah mate, these thing bend very easily, there's a heap of people around with similar issues, it's either not very well reinforced or its the type of aluminium they used. Have.had two aluminium HTC phones before which weren't a problem

It clearly says in the manual not to use in salt water.
I would not use mine in water after having bent it, however just saltwater and a non bent phone is no problem, i do it all the time even tho the manual says not ^^
Take that LG. Sony has the first bendable phone

Mine was bent too suddenly. But it would take a lot of pressure to bend it straight again so I m a little scared of it. No idea how it happened but left top corner is bent down. You can see it- especially on plain surfaces.

[Q] audio jack waterproofing

hey guys, a little question from me. for all of you that have owned xperia z1 for awhile.
the open headphone jack is coated with hydrophobic coating , or seal that prevents the water to get in to the device, will this wear off ? even if you often use normal audio jack for listening to the music?
i need to know if , lets sat the z1 more than 1 year old it still will be waterproof thanks for the answer

It's not just a coating, there's a membrane similar to a wetsuit (but much thinner) protecting the innards of the device.
That's mostly where the "or 30 minutes" portion of the waterproofing results comes from, because it's not exactly waterproof, it's a closed cell neoprene membrane. Water does get in, but it takes ~30 minutes to get through. Now, yes, you can exceed 30 minutes and be fine, it's just a "take it with a grain of salt" situation.
I wash my phone once a week under hot water (at a temperature I can still handle with bare hands), and have been doing so since Jan 2014. It'll be fine
