Huge battery drain - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello,
I recently bought a P20 Pro, good phone, but mine has a big issue...
The battery drain 8~9% per hours screen off, it run hot in my pocket, last night i fell asleep with the phone in bed, in the morning, the phone was screen off under the sheets, it was so hot, impossible to handle with -70% battery in a ~6hours night.
I tried a factory reset this morning, but it's the same...
Idk what i can do, it's impossible to use this phone on a daily basis with a battery usage like that
The firmware is on the last update, 8.1.0.152 (C432)
Adaptive/Automatic backlight is disabled (backlight at ~70%)
Darken interfaces colors enabled
Useless/Annoying services disabled, no location history, assistants, cleanup, "phone care", nothing is enabled
Anyone with the same issue ?

the battery is drained cuz of your network
probably you might be staying in low covergae area
and for wifi pls turn off wifi scanning under setting'

Updated to EMUI9 Beta, not better, 1h15 of screen time, it looks like the idle (screen off) mode use the same battery as screen on/browsing/youtube streaming impossible to use it daily ...

I'm at the same place, at my office where my Nexus 6P / Galaxy S8+ had a normal battery drain, plus the antena relay is ~150m from me, i don't believe it's a cellular network issue, or it's a big hardware issue
I'll try to disable wifi scanning, but also tried for 2 hours disabling cellular data + wifi, same battery usage

Sounds like it's something wrong with your phone, bring it back and get a new.

This shouldn't be the case. Try formatting the phone

Already tried few times (cf first post)
Just contacted the vendor, i'll ask for a replacement

I got a replacement, now it's correct.

I have a similar issue with my Mate RS, if I turb the power saving off the phone will be dead with mild use within half a day.

[Q] Is my battery broken?

Hey I have just bought HTC One 2 days ago. Compared to my old Sensation XE battery life completly sucks. I usually use phone without battery saver, on auto brightness and with Wi-Fi/3g turned on only on demand. Today 8 hours after unplugging phone from the charger I only have 26%. Screen was turned on for 2 hours and 45 minutes only and Wi-Fi worked for 3 hours and 46 mins. I might also say that I did not charge my One before usage to 100% as HTC advised. Was that very crucial? Do you think that phone might be broken or I should just give him time to settle baterry better.
That's sounds like what I get. I turn off mobile data when using WiFi and vice versa. I always use power saver unless I'm 3D gaming. Which is only on the weekends.
I've had mine for 3 months now.
I've seen people get 7:00 screen time on stock unrooted.
I think my battery's broken too. I can barely reach 3 hours of screen time. With 2 hours I get like 11 maybe 12 hours of on time. Something's wrong with our phones...
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Does anyone see a problem with my battery I have been on wifi the whole time with brightness at 20%.I never had this bad of a drain before and all I did was look at facebook for maybe 5 minutes.I also closed the app after I was done using it.

Your battery stats seem on par with me and the OP. Seems that only a select few phones get decent battery life.
My kernel (android os) has been in the 25-35% range,it has never been that high before.
battery life lousy
I get pretty horrible drain too. I charged it to nearly full around 7:30 last night. I took about 2 minutes of video, sent one text, and checked my email 3 times. After that I went to sleep and the phone sat idle. At 6:30 this morning, I'm down to 9%.

Wow, that's real bad.. When my phone is off during night maybe 7% is gone. Then again I'm rooted and use greenify aswell as battery doctor if that has any affect.
On screen time seems like my battery drains pretty fast too though. After 2 hours of music and surfing and watching videos I guess atleast 40% would be gone.
My battery life became horrible, too. My phones loses 4% per unused hour. No App seems to be responsible for that drain. Flightmode or powersaving mode ain't making a difference. I hope we'll find a solution for our drain.

@Racingmatt your power management services is on for quite a bit. do you have alarms.? i would bet that you either that maps location enabled or something of the sort. cause you also have NLPcollector on for around 40 minutes which is a bit much. also i would turn off GPS if your not actively using it.
@Rachorid how are you setting up your wifi? is it set to always be on? or set to turn off when screen off? you have alot of wifi wake. might be due to that. i know when i'm at home my wifi actively pings all devices connected which will force wake up my phone. yea its a bit annoying but i live with it. otherwise i just keep my phone plugged in.
if you both can get some SS of alarms i can give you a better idea. and when you SS the alarms make sure to click on the ones with the most wake lock so i can see the secondary screen that shows what the actual wakelock command is happening.

Here are the latest stats. As you can see many Google wakes.. removing Maps/Now/GMail/turning of Location (a few days ago) had no impact on my drain. The 2nd app on Partial Wakelocks was used actively.
I also disabled Wifi for about 2 hours.. no impact, too. Flightmode also had no impact (a few days ago).

The reason I didnt give you a alarm ss is because I didn't have any alarms when I went to the alarms section. I also had all locations services including GPS enabled but I just now disabled GPS but left network location enabled I'll give you a screenshot later so you can see the differences

I had awesome battery life a month ago with Wifi always on, auto. brightness and every app on hourly sync. (I have my phone since 7th of march) Sometimes I didn't lost a percent over night (8 hours) and I just don't know what it could be because I didn't install another app and no app seems to be responsible for that stanby drain. My on-screen battery life is still good. It also doesn't matter which ROM or kernel I'm using.
Here is my latest stats after 12 hours with 5 minutes of GPS use (turned off when not using)and network location on all the time with 3g/4g on all the time(turns off after a period of inactivity) . I can't give you a alarm stat because I'm not rooted.
Lithium-Ion batteries used in today's smartphones need atleast 10 cycles to show optimum power
so hold on until 2 weeks then you will get the full performance
i get 2 days of battery on my HTC One (since i dont have internet on my Simcard)
its 2G connection and auto Brightness and switched bloatwares off
i use Android Revolution HD 12.2

with normal use 3.6%/h is pretty reasonable. how much screen on time was that including?

Mobile Radio Active being the main reason of discharge

Hello, I bought my Oneplus 3T recently and I'm using stick ROMwith ElementalX. The main problem I found is that everytime I look at what consumed the highest percentage of my battery are things like WA, Google Play Services, etc. If I click on the to see what is happening, I always get the Mobile Radio Active working like pretty much all the time.
For example, in a normal use for me which is between 26-30 hours until I decide to charge my phone(between 10-20%), I get a SoT of 4 hours and a half more or less. The problem is that from the total percentage of battery used, these applications which have the Mobile Radio Active problem drain between 10-15% of the total amount of battery, while my screen is like 7% of that total value.
Researching on XDA, I couldn't get any solution to this problem. I call this a problem because, every day I see new photos from people with between 7-9 h of SoT in maybe 20 hours of use. Of course, you can't really call this a bad performance of my phone but I think that this difference of hours with screen on is greater than the amount of time my phone stays with my screen off.
As a consequence, I wanted to know if there is a solution or some tips to reduce that Mobile Radio Active bug in order to extend the time between charges.
Thnk you very much.
Additional information: I cleaned flash stock today + ElementalX kernel + SuperSu to see if this kind of bug dissappears.
To "solve" the Mobile Radio Active bug you must take some extreme steps:
First, Root your device. This MUST be SuperSu unfortunately, as the app I'm going to suggest doesn't allow you to toggle the required settings with Magisk or Phh.
Install LeanDroid.
In settings, allow disabling of Wifi, Cellular Data, Bluetooth, Network Location and GPS Location.
Set to "0 min" after screen off. Click "Except".
Configure this screen to your taste, but I have "Except if tethering", "Except if charging (AC). Under Wifi I have "Except if connected to <my home WIFI>" and I have "Except if active: Limit" set to 100KB/s.
Bluetooth "Except if connected"
Location "Except if GPS in use"
and "Network Mode except if original strength OK."
Go back to the main panel.
Restore "After Screen Unlocked"
"Every 60 MIN after screen off" (Configure this to your liking)
With SuperSU and the above, turning the phone screen off disables the data modem when the transfer rate is low, this effectively shuts down the radio and prevents the Mobile Radio Active bug.
Run this with tools like Greenify and ForceDoze to really pump your battery life.
It's not unusual for me to see 8 hour screen on time with these apps and the above configuration.
and without root?
Just curious, how is the status of this bug ? I followed that Bug for like 1.5Years...since Lollipop i think. I myself tryed several things in Sultans ROMs in a OnePlusOne, but no Solution so far ;-(
Bug is still active. As far as I can tell, it remains active in Oero too.
The only option if you are not rooted is to close all apps and toggle airplane mode before you switch the screen off. This only solves the issue until the next time data is accessed by any app, though
THX for reply. Jepp on Wifi i get 4-5days @3-4h SOT. On Mobile only 2 days

Obviously, it takes more power to send/receive signals to a cell tower 10 miles away, versus a WiFi router that is 20 feet away.
Also using WiFi doesn't ensure the modem is Switched off. Modem power doesn't mean data.

This this bugs even remain active in Oreo i will never use android again.
It's existed since Lollipop and I doubt Google will fix it any time soon.
To get 7 hours of on screen time, you will of course have to sacrifice something, the laws of physics are always with us, reminding us from day to day things that can and can't be done. But hey, if you live in a cardboard box next to a cell tower should give you much better battery time without sacrificing the phone-part of your smart device. ? ?

battery life

i got my device updated to B133 it said it increases battery performance but it seems my battery is draining fast...anyone having the same problem??... can anybody give a better solution
I have a "similiar" problem - my devices starts rebooting or bootlooping (not sure whats exactly is happening) when reaching 100% Battery (I'm currently trying to finger out).
In my Screenshoot you can see, that the phone is totally offline about 1-2hours at night while charing.

i didnt observed something like that cz i never charge overnight... but the phone heats quicker in the day light and the battery drains faster than before
This is just my personal experience.
I own Huawei P10 UK variant with carrier bloat (Three) firmware version: VTR-L09GBRC555B150.
Since I got update I had really terrible battery life.
The phone didn't last me a day with on average 2.5-3h screen on time. To improve my battery I dived deeper in settings and here is what I find.
Turn off auto brightness in notification menu.
Go to settings>battery and click on" lock screen clean up" close apps that you want to stop using WiFi /data when device is locked - is amazing to see how many apps actually use data when screen is off.
In same section turn off "Remaining battery percentage"
Also go to settings>more>mobile network and turn off "mobile data always on"
In settings>wifi unmarked wifi+ option.
After these adjustments your phone should really improve in battery department.
Also if you receive any update from Huawei it's a good thing to do factory reset to stop apps from using extra resources from before update.
Here are some screen shots

Abnormal battery consumption in wifi

Hi, I'm noticing an abnormal battery consumption when the phone is connected in wifi (about 7-10% per hour in standby) and I can see the lower arrow of data connection always on, so some apps are constantly download data. I have tried to close several apps manually (even system app) but nothing has changed. In 4G instead all is fine. Do you have any idea what the problem might be?
I did notice this, too in the newest firmware.
Did even check if there is much traffic (can see it per app in adguard), but nothing.
Workaround for me is to disable wifi if in standby.
(Doesn't help if in usage of cause...)

What apps are showing at the top in battery usage?
Have you thought of installing BBS, there is a version that runs on non-root.
Does RCSService show up in battery usage?
Just in case it might help our op:
After 1day 12 hours (35min SOT):
Standby 11%
Mobile net in standby (sorry need to translate it) 6%
Deezer 6%
AdGuard 4%
Android OS 4%
Android-System 2 %
Bluetooth 1%
Display 1%
--> This should make 35%, but well, the phone shows 60% left, so still 5% are missing (I suppose it's just "other" apps >1%).
Phone still showing 2 days 4 hours to go.

I can see: Google Play services, RCS, Google Play Store, Android Operating System, Chrome, Wifi, Memory.
For installing BBS, for what I could read, you need to install via adb and for now I don't do it.
However, if I reboot the phone when I see this strange behavior, keeping always wifi on, then the phone returns to normal operation, and the battery consumption is normal. The problem starts when I turn on the wifi manually, with the phone already switched on.
Hi,
i have this problem too (not rooted, last firmware).
About 6% / hour if connect the xz1c to wifi.
If i simply restart the phone (with wifi on), it decreases to less than 1% / hour.
Did someone find the cause or a solution?
Thank you.
I opened discussions in Sony Mobile forums:
International
Italian
If you want, write about your issue there.
Maybe it will help to be solved.
Thank you.
Same problem here. I replied in the RCS thread, but on the latest 2 firmwares I lose about 7%/hr (idle drain) with wifi on and less than 1%/hr with wifi off. My phone also gets hot when I keep wifi on while idle. I've solved the problem by keeping wifi off except during large downloads, and I have a high enough data cap for that to be a reasonable option. Still annoying though.
Has anyone checked if there is a difference when WiFi scanning is disabled?
Good day.
I do not currently own a xz1C, but in my Galaxy S8 had the same issue, until i turned off "WiFi scanning" like user 'pseudonym58' said.
I have WIFI scanning OFF.
(the one in wifi-settings and the one in google-localization)

Hi guys,
yesterday i tried to see if Play Store in XZ1C was updated.
(play store, setting, tap on version)
It wasn't.
Tapping on version, it downloaded last version (8.9.24)
I rebooted the phone.
Battery drain on Wifi seems reduced (with my two modems) or maybe solved.
I'm monitoring the situation and i'll let you know.
Strangely it's 2 or 3 days the problem seems gone, I don't know if the reason for the change is the updating of some app or service. Play Store has been updated yesterday but the problem was already gone before. For now all is ok.
@aerofan
What version is installed now on your device?
(Btw I can press the version 100 times, it always tells me it downloading a new version )

I have 8.9.24.
This is what i did:
I tapped on version.
It said "google play will be updated" (or something similar)
I waited for a while (no notifications or messages appeared)
I came back on google play and tapped on version and it said it was updated.
I rebooted the phone.
Strange, I had an older version installed but it would not update.
I uninstalled all updates for the playstore and searched again: 8.9.24
Edit: Didn't fix the battery consume
I am experiencing the same issue. I have not checked on the google playstore version yet.
As soon as I switch wify on my battery loss is about 5-6% an hour when doing nothing. There is also no program standing out in the battery menu. When adding the consumption times there is a huge gap that cannot be explained. RCS phone shows up, but only with minor usage.
I will be back to you after checking the version of google playstore. Hopefully it does the trick.
Edit: I disabled automatic updates of google playstore and rebooted the phone. Battery consumption looks normal now. I then switched on auto update again. It still looks good.
Edit: Battery drain can temporarily be fixed with rebooting the device. Updating the playstore or disabling automatic updates did not work for me. Any other ideas?
Hi,
I have same problem with my battery life, it's quite fitfully.
I've checked that my battery can stand 3 days and 7h of screen on, but on the other hand sometimes my battery only can stand 1 days and 2'5h of screen on.
I make a very undemanding and very similar daily use of the XZ1 Compact
I have my xz1 Compact totally updated: Firmware v.47.1.A.12.119 PlayStore v.9.4.18 and disabled all of uncommon scannings (Wi-Fi,BT,Location,etc..)
My router has 2.4ghz band only enabled and WPA-PSK security, during the night I specially have good and strong Wi-Fi signal in XZ1 Compact.
So...Does anyone know what may be happening? I really appreciate your help.
Thanks.
Wifi battery drain was improved on the past few firmwares for me, but it's now back with a vengeance. This is on 47.1.A.12.235 (July patch). Absolutely massive drain during the times when wifi was on, with almost no screen use during that time. I resorted to turning wifi off.

The 5Ghz band uses a lot of juice, maybe the latest firmware pushes the phone to use that frequency by default. To test this try seperating the 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz frequencies on your home router and joining the 2.4 with your phone.
This is just a hunch on my part, but I can't back it up with any proof.

Factory Reset does NOT solve S10 Battery Drain (15-20%) when Idle

I noticed my Samsung S10 T-Mobile Snapdragon would drain about 15-20% overnight while asleep (6-8 hours) since last week or so. The drain during the day is also significantly worse, but it's easier to compare the numbers when on idle. The first weeks that I had the phone, I was losing less than 5% overnight (6-8 hours). I am not sure if this was caused by the security updates, carrier updates, or a rogue application. I made no changes to the phone settings that I can recall. My phone was connected to WIFI overnight, with cellular, cellular data, and Bluetooth on. Prior to going to bed I would charge the phone to about 80% and unplug it.
I installed AccuBattery after reading some forums and it showed that my battery drain overnight was about 2-3% PER hour. AccuBattery also indicated that my phone was in deep sleep +85% of the time. The breakdown per application does not total the 15-20% so there's something else draining the battery. Eventually, I uninstalled AccuBattery to see if it was contributing to the drain, and it made no difference.
Below are most of the things that I have tried and tested overnight while I slept (6-8 hours), all of them have been UNSUCCESSFUL at solving the battery drain. I might have forgotten some other settings that I have changed. Keep in mind that this took me over a week of playing around with these settings, and checking the battery right before and after I went to sleep.
Restarted phone (There's always someone who would suggest this if not written down)
Cleared Google Services, Google, and other Apps Cache and Data
Cleared Cache Memory (Through recovery menu - Tried this about 5 times at this point)
Reset the big 3 (Reset settings, Reset network settings, Reset accessibility settings)
Enabled Airplane Mode (Cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth Off)
Disabled Location
Disabled Sync
Disabled Always on Display
Disabled ALL Motions and Gestures (e.g. Lift to Wake, Double tap to wake, Smart Stay, etc.)
Disabled Video enhancer
Disabled Game Launcher
Disabled Bixby Routines
Disabled Nearby Device Scanning
Disabled WiFi Scanning and Bluetooth Scanning (Improve Accuracy)
Disabled Show icon when screen is off (under fingerprints - from Samsung Forums)
Disabled certain Apps (AR Emoji, ARCore, Briefing, Chrome, Game Launcher, Google, Facebook, Secure Folder, etc.)
Forced Stop certain Apps (Bixby, Secure WiFi, etc. - they seem to all come back after a couple of minutes anyway)
Enabled/Disabled Adaptive Power Saving (Tried both settings, made no difference)
Enabled/Disabled Auto Optimization (Tried both settings, made no difference)
Switched between Power Modes (Optimized to Medium, made no difference)
Change lock screen and home screen to a 100% black wallpaper
Ran Safe Mode overnight with ALL of the settings above (Airplane with Location and Sync Off, etc.) Still got a 15% drain overnight.
Last night after I got fed up with playing with the countless of options, I decided to Factory Reset the phone thinking that this would solve my battery drain problem. Well, WRONG. Still got a 15% battery drain overnight with only the core apps installed, in airplane mode, location and sync disabled, and other settings disabled. I did NOT restore any backups from Samsung or Google, nor installed any additional apps that did not come with the phone.
I have complained to Samsung through their Samsung Members application under Feedback. If you guys are on the same boat, I suggest we all start complaining so that they can start taking a look at this and hopefully release a fix.
If you guys have any tips or anything has worked for you guys, please let me know.

If its still draining that much even in flight mode, then something is definitely wrong. Seems like you've tried everything. Can you not get a replacement under warranty from where you purchased it? Sounds faulty.

I have had this same issue with my S7. Hence my reply. At that time I have traced it down to a certain kernel process. The only way to resolve this was to replace the motherboard. A factory reset didnt helped either.
Later when i investigated it further it was like an Interrupt request for sleep mode. Eleminating the phone going to deep sleep. Than you will see drains like this
My advice. Get the device replaced. It was the only way to resolve the problem on my S7. Hardware replacement

I installed BetterBatteryStats and got a ~20 drain over 9 hours of standby while sleeping. The phone was untouched for 9 hours, airplane mode on, location off, sync off, and other settings off.

Also, how did you manage to get your phone replaced? By Samsung? I am past the 30 day return policy so I am not sure how easy/hard it will be for the to replace my device/motherboard. What did you say to them exactly?
Reflash firmware?
Which update are you on?
After the ASCA, but before the finger print sensor update, I had amazing battery life, less than 1% per hour on idle.
But after finger print sensor update, it's about 2% per hour on idle.
Maybe reflash ASCA without the fps update? If it's possible

Spoke to someone in Reddit and he flashed his phone to the Febraury update. It still had bad idle drain.
Additional things I have tried recently overnight with no success
Disabled fingerprint
Removed SIM Card
Cleared memory cache again
I'll wait for the April update and see if that solves things. If not, I guess I'll drop by one of their service centers/genuis bars.
What a terrible experience...
Yeah that does not seem normal.
With airplane mode drop 0.2%/hours.
Sorry you are having bad issues. I would try to install U1 firmware and see if that helps.

I'm having the same issue after the recent updates on AT&T. I used to get close to 9 hours SOT and now I barely get 4. Nothing unusual in the battery stats either so I'm not sure what's going on.
Same here. The idle drain is completely insane! It's a shame that the phone suffers from issues like this when you compare it to the price we paid for it. From what I can tell the issue stems from the kernel not being able to figure out the proper frequencies for the cores in idle which leads to **** performance. I'm gonna try to flash the asd4 firmware via odin once. If it doesn't work I'm gonna get a replacement if possible. Currently I get around 4 hours of sot no matter what I do. Doesn't matter what I do which is super weird. My s7 edge which was at least 2 years old gave me a better sot more regularly, so I'm definitely pretty irritated with this. Will update once I flash over odin.

To all who has this issues. First thing to check is .. Does the phone ever enters deep sleep ....
I used this app on my S7..
Wakelock Detector. Can be found in google play.. Sorry cant post links due to my new status here.
A teraz Rozwiazanie . Wychodzimy w MENU - ZAAWANSOWANE FUNKCJE - RUCH I GESTY* - i odznaczamy opcję DOTKNIJ DWUKROTNIE ABY WYBUDZIĆ. następnie w MENU - EKRAN BLOKADY - ALWAYS ON DISPLAY - TRYB WYŚWIETLACZA zmieniamy opcję DOTKNIJ ABY POKAZAĆ na którąś z pozostałych lub całkowicie wyłączamy ALWAYS ON DISPLAY . To powinno rozwiązać problem z baterią w moim przypadku kończąc**pracę**z telefonem w kieszeni po 8 godzinach miałem 30% Baterii a teraz 70% .

BetterBatteryStats shows it goes to deep sleep 99% of the time overnight. No abnormal kernel wakelocks/partial wakelocks/alarms.
A couple of other things I have tried recently unsuccessfully while sleeping (6-8 hours) over the past week:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode + airplane mode
Safe Mode + airplane mode + cache wipe + Google services wipe
Safe Mode + airplane mode + cache wipe + Google services wipe + Remaining Apps in Sleep Mode (Battery Settings>Sleeping Apps)
Safe Mode + airplane mode + cache wipe + Google services wipe + Remaning Apps in Sleep Mode + Max Battery Mode (instead of Optimized Mode)
The best idle drain I got overnight was 15% drain over ~6 hours (~2.5%/hour)
I'll try disabling the Adaptive Battery/Auto Optimization while I have all my Apps in Sleep Mode an Safe Mode. I'll also try another Factory Reset this weekend.
If that doesn't work, I'll schedule an appointment with one of their service centers.
This sucks. My 2-year old S7 Edge still has better battery life than this.
I remember reading a post on Reddit from a guy saying he had a current leak on his faulty motherboard. Maybe you got the same issue on yours.

After reading your comment, I decided to test the phone completely off overnight.
To my surprise the battery drain was still present. From 5PM to 730AM my battery went down from 87% to 60%!!! So about ~2%/hour while the S10 was COMPLETELY OFF.
I'll be taking my phone to the service center sometime this week. For anybody else having crazy drain problems, turn your device completely off and see if the drain is still present. It might be a hardware issue
