Password protected notes/memos

Does anyone know of any good apps to securely store some notes or memos? I've never lost or had a phone stolen (knock on wood) but I keep some stuff on my phone like SS#'s and bank account info and just want to make sure it's safe.

I don't really use this kind of thing but my suggestion is just to encrypt a pdf or microsoft word document and store it on the phone with a reader. Easiest way I guess.

I am trying out several: B-Folders, BioWallet, eWallet. I am using eWallet on Windows 7 platform and I sync it to my phone but it's read-only on Android right now. It's still my current favorite however. BioWallet has a lot of potential if they get moving on development and B-Folders is pretty decent also.
Beyond that, I depend on Lookout for virus scanning and (if ever needed) remote wipe.
I hope to find a lockscreen for Android that permits a "Lost or stolen" ID message like Windows Mobile does.

I like AK notepad and OI safe. They are both free in the market.

I use an app called App Protector (in market) to lock my photos and videos. It'll do it for memos and whatever other applications you want.

HELP! need note taking app + ability to attach docs easily

first off, i'm wanting to use my tablet for business use. i go to a lot of corporate meetings and i want to:
1. take notes
2. have attachments to those notes (documents, pdfs, spreadsheets, pictures, whatever)
3. be able to attach files from the local storage and access both the note AND the attachment even if offline (if i'm somewhere where there is no wifi)
4. organize my notes into folders so that i can sort them by whatever the meeting is abount
ive been trying various note taking apps such as handrite, evernote, catch, springpad, etc but i've yet to find one single app that will do all that i want.
evernote -nice but you have to pay a subscription fee in order to put attachments on your notes...lame.
catch - the best app for attaching local files on my tablet to the note itself. i can attach pdf's, pics, etc so when i my note open about that meeting, i can touch the attachment and it launches in whatever app i want it to launch with. awesome. problem is that the organization stuff sucks.
springpad - LOVE the interface and it makes it easy to organize stuff. they have a chrome extension so i can add notes and things from my browser which is cool. the only problem i have with this app is that it doesnt allow the local file attachment like catch does. you can attach anything, but it then links to the springpad cloud service to pull the message down...not ideal if i'm offline.
handrite - this just does handwritten notes obviously, but the ideal situation would be to take handwritten notes and then send it to my other note taking app of choice.
SO...i'm still kind of feeling this all out, but i'm hoping that you guys can give me a good solution to my problem. as of right now, im torn between springpad and catch. the two big kickers here are offline usage and attachments. i need to access all of my attachments and notes if offline with no hiccups. thoughts?

Look up GoogleDocs. I haven't used it but try it out and see if it helps.

i have Google Docs and it works for note taking and organization...but it doesnt allow me to attach files to notes. if i create a note and save it, i want to be able to take a pdf or any kind of other file and attach the file to the note. basically i'm wanting to emulate the pen/notepad experience. in the past i've taken a notepad and pen for note taking...and also printed off any documents (price quotes, slides, emails, etc) that i need for reference, and stuck them in my notebook. so i could have all of my various printed docs ready for reference during THAT particular meeting. i want the same thing with an app and i feel like springpad is almost there...just need a little more.
any other ideas?

Yeah. Install evernote.
Its cloud based so you'll need to register. It allows you to attach files from the file system or photos from the camera. Also arrange your notes into folders (I have a meetings folder)
Plus the big plus is that any notes I write are auto synced with evernote on my PC and vice versa so I don't have to do anything to get what I wrote back to my main machine

i have evernote installed and had planned on using it until i found out that they require you to pay a yearly subscription fee to upload attachments. $45 a year i think it is. its not crazy expensive or anything...but i dont really care about having my attachments in the cloud. i just want the ability to attach them from my local device or other service (dropbox for instance). i guess you are paying for the evernote storage capacity, but if it would just like to the local device or dropbox, i wouldnt need to pay.
yes its valuable and yes i would probably use it and swear by it, but i was just HOPING to find another solution that wasnt a subscription based model.

Last thing. If you're going to be going without wifi and want to be able to access an existing note or a pre-prepared empty note with your reference material attached, just open the note on your tablet in advance whilst you have wifi and it'll cache it locally so you can access it even from the moon!

Sorry, didn't notice that. I swear I've done attachments without paying... haven't needed to sync them tho... email the attachments to yourself and use the power of multi-tasking!

thanks for the tip...this is basically what I want to do. and btw, i just read on evernote's "premium" stuff that the subscription stuff allows you to upload all types of files...but that means that the free version does allow for some types to be uploaded. didnt know that, so i just uploaded a pdf attachment to a note. works well enough. although i'm not really sure why loading a pdf or picture is okay but not a .docx or .xlsx i could see mp3's and what not, but word docs? really?
worst case scenario, i have to convert all of my word docs to pdfs

No worries. Personally I use dropbox to transfer reference material onto my xoom to a folder on the internal storage in advance of the meetings and don't tend to use the attachments in evernote. Hope you find a good solution

hmmm....okay well....hope you dont mind if i ask you some questions?
you sound like you use your tablet in a similar way for business so i'm curious just as to your general "process".
1. walk into meeting with xoom
2. sit down and open up....Evernote and Dropbox?
3. do you type on the virtual keyboard or the bluetooth keyboard? or do you use Handrite with a stylus?
4. when referencing docs, do you have dedicated folders in dropbox for specific meetings or maybe just organized based on project?
as you can see, i'm really wanting to have everything digital, but i want to get down the process so i'm not fumbling through various apps and what not during the meeting itself. sounds like you have this down pat...so i'm open to your suggestions! thanks again.

I tend to keep my downloads folder very cleared out and organised so I just leave my meeting stuff in there. Saves me having to move stuff after downloading files from Dropbox or email.
I tend to just open evernote and filemanagerHD (which has a nice shortcut on the left hand side to the downloads folder). The xoom with 3.1 is quick enough for me to just open my reference material as I need it from file manager. I then use the honeycomb task switcher to swap between notes and reference
If I'm working on a project longer term I setup a folder for the reference material to keep it separate.
Another useful feature of filemanagerHD is the ability to bookmark files on your xoom for easy access. I do this alot. Often bookmarking the files ill need just before the meeting or as everyone is coming in.
In terms of note taking I use thumb keyboard 4.0 beta in one handed mode (where the keyboard only takes up one side of the landscape screen) so all the keys are withing fingers reach of my hand without me having to move it much. Love thumb kepyboard !

Oh. I also regularly take photos of whiteboards from my notes in evernote! That syncs without subscription!
Waiting to see what this leather folio case with built in keyboard will be like when released too! Could be useful!

Windows phone security- is there one and if so, how does it work?

So, Android has a permission system which albeit somewhat flawed (malware can gain permissions not intended for it) and not very suitable for laymen (non rooted phones have to either accept all permissions or be denied from the app. In many programs people don't have the luxury of not using them) theoretically has merit. IOS has...well actually I'm not sure how it works security wise but I pressume it creates sandboxes for each app, layman wise it is reasonable since you (theoretically) can deny access for all programs to certain components (no need to jailbreak).

Security is different, apps can't do as much as on android. But iOS is better in this, because capabilities are like in Android: you can see what the apps want prior to installing them, but blocking some of them isn't possible.

@th0mas96's post is technically *mostly* accurate but very confusing and doesn't actually answer your question at all.
The short version is that WP apps use a capability-and-sandbox system much like iOS and Android, with each app getting a sandbox that gives it read-only access to the app-specific install directory and the global system directory, read/write access to the app-specific data directory, and access to whatever other stuff is specified in the capabilities. Capabilities are currently all-or-nothing; you can't reject or disable any capability except by just not installing the app.
I could go into the technical implementation of the system a bit, but the short version is that WP8 apps use fairly standard NT (as in the NT kernel that is at the core of PC Windows versions) security features: each app has a unique token (rather than inheriting the token of the process that crated it, the way it normally works on PC but very much like how Windows Store apps work on Win8) which contains the app-specific Security IDentifier (SID) that gives access to the app directories, plus the SIDs of the various capabilities that the app has.
What @th0mas96 was talking about is that WP capabilities usable by third-party developers are much more restrictive than they are on Android. For example, Android allows an app have full read-write access to your contacts or to send SMS directly. WP8 doesn't allow that unless you use capabilities that are normally neither allowed on the store nor allowed in sideloaded apps (Microsoft's code can have them, of course - that's how the built-in SMS app works - but not Joe Random Dev). The downside of this is obvious; some app behaviors (like a full replacement for the SMS app or phone dialer) are not possible. The upside is that apps are *way* more limited in how malicious they can be; the most common way that Android malware makes money (remember, the vast majority of malware is for profit) is by sending SMS to "premium" numbers. On WP8, an app could *compose* such a message, but it couldn't *send* it for you (unless it had a capability that third-party apps normally can't have) so you'd have a chance to see what the app was doing and decide not to send that message after all.
This means that the ability to disable capabilities is much less important on WP8 than on Android.

Oh, then those restrictions are actually good news.
Aside from from your typical run-of-the-mill malware my main concern was actually privacy. I have a huge displeasure from apps like Whatsapp which on android takes a whole plethora of liberties and was hoping that perhaps some other system may contain their user data voracity and their ability to control the divice their on.
Is there any link in which I could see the full list of those restrictions?
I'm still downhearted from not having a more fine grained control of the system but maybe it still has it uses in some scenarios...

i found a tiny file stored inside some of the unbranded htc accord RUUs. its call disablewriteprotect.test. the only thing the file contains is a sentence stating write protection will be disabled until this file is removed. followed by a music note and some other symbol. so there you go thats how you make your entire htc 8x read and write. one file less than 1kb in size. ROOT!
but how can we flash this file. im still working on it. this file is located within the efi partition which also houses the ffuloader.efi, and severl other efi executables. check this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53687985#post53687985

Hi mates.
I've switched from note 3 (greatest phone I've ever bought) to note 8 and I'm encountering a problem with the email configuration.
Actually, on the email application of note 3 I was able to add a personal PGP certificate for signing an email (or even deciphering emails from my contacts). The current Samsung email application seems to not have such feature... can you confirm this to me?
It's about to be weird, since they are spotting the encryption feature into the app description on the play store. Thanks

However, according to the Knox Workspace 2.9 IT Admin Guide, it appears that Samsung wants you to have Knox enabled first and use their default mail client for S/MIME or PGP to be an option.

Well... Samsung My Knox has been replaced by Personal Area and even if I configure an e-mail account inside it, the email application doesn't show the "advance" security options.
That's makes me vary mad...

Thank you for pointing that out. I had forgot that 'My Knox' had been retired.
I was pouring through their white papers and what not, and I'm thinking this must've been a business strategy; give consumers a moderate level of security via 'Secure Folders' and leave more advanced features for enterprise environments via 'Knox Workspace'.

Today they confirmed that PGP was removed, as evidenced by this thread, and only S/MIME will be supported.
I have included a screenshot but have removed any personal details about myself and the contact at Samsung.

I have noticed that my important email has been compromised. I've seen logins from the US (I've never been in the US) and even parts of Sweden that I have not visited (and by a browser that I've never used, so it's not me).
I am really surprised by this considering I use 2-factor authentication on it and my Note 8 doesn't even have Google authenticator visible. It is installed but I've hid it and use it by going to app store and searching for it.
All my important websites are protected by 2-factor authenticator. Except for my phone. I have BitDefender antivirus but I am not sure if this is enough.
I need something really strong to protect my phone from people accessing it and its apps. Mainly a protection against keyloggers.
My phone is rooted if that makes any difference.
Also, I don't mind if it costs money. I will pay well for top notch protection.

If it wasn't rooted I would just encrypt the sd card, make sure you have a good pattern/password and use Secure Folder for anything more sensitive. Between all that, bitdefender, and 2-factor authentication on accounts where possible, the only other thing I can think of is using a VPN when connecting to public wifi. Of course root breaks Knox though, so that changes things here for Secure Folder, etc. Maybe there are some other security apps you could use instead for sensitive stuff, as well as a firewall app, but root does run counter to maximum security.

Rooted phone = lack of security!
As soon as a phone is rooted there is little security as all the inbuilt security (safe folder & knox) are gone and banking apps won't work!

Thanks. I guess I already have enough security. I was baffled that my e-mail was compromised. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. I noticed no change to any of my files etc. But it does show suspicious logins from countries I have never been to.

Yeah thanks for the obvious pointer. But rooting a phone is a must. Also, all my banking apps work just fine. I am not dependant on Samsung.

As was mentioned earlier, use a VPN when using the internet. It does protect your IP and is handy to get to content you can't access from your country..

I assume you have already done this, but I would immediately change my password to that account (along with any other accounts that share the same password), even though you have rwo-factor authentication. Unless you logged in while on VPN or proxy, suspicious logins from other countries you haven't visited sounds like a red flag.

I changed every important website to a password that is so hard to type I need to do it carefully every time. I got in contact with Fastmail (who btw is an awesome e-mail service, although paid) and they said that my phone is compromised.
Damnit.
I use my phone far more than my computers. They also suggested that I use a password manager but if my phone is compromised so easily then I probably am better off just getting better protection for my phone.

Damn that really sucks...sorry yo hear that. Hmm at this point I would backup photos, etc, flash stock firmware, and start fresh. Be careful with what you reinstall, as one of those apps/mods may possibly be the culprit.

@Nebell are you using sms to get your 2step-authentication code? maybe all your sms are being forwarded (via some malware app). You should be using a firewall if you are rooted.
Lots of apps have permission to access sms text messages and even send it.
Before i side load any apps, i use virustotal.com , go to website, upload APK file and if malware then install (if you must have it) but block it using firewall, any other red flags, then find another apk version or similar app.
Let Fastmail know of your breach and they can check which other devices or websites are registered/ linked to your account.
I suggest you backup your data, virus scan it all on a PC, wipe your android phone and start fresh. I use backup-your-mobile by Artur, to export my calendar, contacts, sms, call logs, etc. it works quite good.

I think it might have been a false positive.
I reset my phone to factory settings and changed all passwords and suddenly "Ashburn US" login kept getting failed attempts on my email. But as soon as I reinstalled Edison Mail app and logged in, the success login from Ashburn US resumed.
It must somehow be connected to that app. I've sent a message to Edison and asked them if they are associated with that location. Maybe their server is located there or something, but I will wait and see what they reply before I take next action.
The fact that makes me believe this was a false positive is that I never noticed anyone reading my email or actually trying to do something, and I do have sensitive stuff in there.
