I'd like to be able to cast movies or shows to my TV in a bedroom while the wife sleeps - and be able to mute the TV and listen to the show through earbuds - connecting the earbuds to my phone, not to the TV... anyone have any ideas?

I'm not 100% sure it will work, but have you tried Separate App Audio settings? It's at the bottom of the Sound settings.
I do this all the time through my xbox one. I cast what I'm watching to the xbox one, connect my headphones to the xbox one controller. Certain apps will not cast to the xbox but the samsung video player app will.

But it would be by running the same app twice, and the speech I hear from one will not match the video being played on the other - they would not stay in sync-

Ok, this isn't a FREE solution, but heres a thought.
Get a Roku stick. You can cast from the N8 to the Roku. Then rhe Roku remote itself actually has a headphone jack so you can listen to the audio through earbuds.

Why? The earbud plug into the Roku remote. The part you hold in your hand. Not the stick in the back of the TV.
Sorry it's not the Roku Stick that has the headphone jack on the remote. It was my Roku 3. But the Roku app allows you to listen to TV through your phone's headphone jack.
Let me test and see if I can get it work the way youre wanting.

Ok, here's what you need to do:
1. Get a Roku (I recommend the Stick for $50)
2. Install the Roku app on your Note
3. Cast whatever content you want to the Roku
4. Go to the Roku app and select your Roku and go to the remote in the app. Plug in your headphones and hit the headphone button in the lower left.
I'm watching YouTube music on my living room TV right now, but listening to the audio through my headphones plugged into my N8. No audio is coming from the TV.

You can also listen to the audio through your phones speaker phone. This leads me to believe it will also work bluetooth headphones.
Note, in our house we have the newer black ROKU stock (I believe the 2016 version) in the living room, and it works perfectly on that.
We have the older purple sticks in all the other rooms, and you cant stream audio from the old sticks to the Roku App with the older sticks for some reason.
I do that all the time. Just screen share to your tv and connect your headset. Then pull down the notification bar and press audio output select.

Sweet! I finally found a use for Samsung Connect, LOL.
It works well, but I prefer to cast natively from each app, rather than cast my whole device, if that makes sense. But with natively casting from within each app, you can't seem to use connect to redirect the audio.

Within the Samsung Connect App, when it scans it only finds my earbuds. There is no option to connect to ANY LG TV, they are ONLY Samsung TV model numbers. Go into the Samsung Connect app and tap on TV... Are you saying my TV has to support Bluetooth? Because it doesn't, I am only connecting to it with Chromecast... I tried it tonight, Samsung connect only shows my earbuds, as I am connected to Chromecast to the TV with sound coming out of the TV... This doesn't work with Chromecast at all!

Samsung Connect works with Miracast devices, and your LG apparently has Miracast built-in. TV support for Miracast is not universal by any stretch.
Casting your phone's screen using any wireless technology is not going to deliver the sort of performance modern televisions are capable of. Even the low end of HD resolution will have crappy frame rates.
Note that I am NOT talking about Chromecast, where the target device (the TV, dongle or Roku box) is actually streaming the content from the contact provider's source servers rather than mirroring the phone's display. Chromecast can also support display mirroring, but that suffers the same performance issues as every other mirroring technology (and Miracast is the only one that really competes). Fine for showing your photo album, PowerPoint presentations and low-res videos, but that's about it.
Yes it actually not work very well with some streaming apps. For 1080 p videos I actually use an app in my built-in tv. And I use my Bluetooth headphones connect to my tv. And not use the phone.
I need to hardbrick note 8 due to increasing screen flickering after small damage. When the screen is off the damage is not visible(it was small push on the edge), so killing the phone completely would give me a chance for free repair/exchange. I tried to flash wrong rom with Odin, it is not working, fails every time. It fails via TWRP as well. The only thing was close to bricking is installing wrong recovery with twrp but this just leads to boot loop with red warning on top. It look like it is not possible to hardbrick this "tank" At least it is not as easy as it seems
It has TWRP and SuperSU (had magisk before)

But is it fair to charge 400 EUR for repairing a flimsy screen?
One dishonest eBay seller was late with his phone case delivery and there were no cases at the time in the shops, so I had to go on holiday without a case
Multibillion corp won't loose much, they should invest in building failproof screens instead of milking old dodgy industrial strategy of build-in obsolescence

I always say to myself, when I go to meet my maker, my conscience will be clear - when telling cashier's they gave me the wrong change, etc. - same thing here. Using someone else's dishonesty or greed as an excuse - doesn't work - for me, anyway. There are many services that will replace screens - maybe you'll find one for less. No insurance in the phone?

It's not about whether Samsung will ne hurt by you defrauding them, it's about how much is your integrity worth?
You are part of the generation thst accepts no responsibility. You have an attitude of entitlement. It's not YOUR fault you damaged your screen. It's the fault of an eBay seller because you didn't order your case in time. It's not YOUR fault you damaged your screen, its Samsung's fault for making a flimsy screen.
So because you damaged your screen, you want to defraud Samsung.

Make sure that you throw the phone naked. Better if you throw it across a concrete floor. Will make Oreos ooze out quickly .
2$ a pack of decent size Oreo pack. 1200 will generate roughly 500 packs.

Not for nothing but if OS updates were that important for you maybe the Pixel series would have suited you best? Yeah, it sucks users can't have everything they want/need but that's the mobile world we're living in. Samsung delivers the awesome, top of the line hardware but when it comes to OS updates we're left at the mercy of the OEM and carriers. With Google, you get some decent hardware but the OS updates are on point. Typically. Such is life.

I know this reply is a bit late but you can disable the update. First you have to factory reset to remove the cache of the downloaded update, just clearing cache in recovery will not work. After you have reset and gone through the setup without setting up WiFi immediately turn off mobile data. Now for the tricky part. You will need to install a package disabler and disable com.wssyncmldm (Software Update) and com.samsung.sdm (System Updates). I use SABS and turn on data only to activate it and then turn off data until I get the updater disabled. The trick is to get the package disabler installed before the update starts downloading. Keeping data and WiFi off will stop this. I believe just removing your sim card when you reset will stop the updater also but I haven't tried that yet. It worked like this on all my previous phones and might make the process easier.
View attachment 4479714
Edit: When doing this on Oreo it will remove Software Update from the settings menu and Nougat it will only disable the service.
The thought just struck me. If we have 2 cameras, surely we should be able to capture video or take photos in 3D? At least through fancy software magic? Obviously we couldn't play back 3D on our phone displays, but I'd love to take 3D video and save it as an SBS (side-by-side) format for playback on my 3D TV. I'm not expecting this to actually be a reality, but would it be possibly in THEORY?

I did think of that, but even thought the images wouldn't be exactly identical, the normal lens could match up with the telephoto lens digitally, and still theoretically produce the "same" image.
This option will be coming to the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 next year... You will be able to make 3D photos and videos content similar to Nintendo 3DS. Not sure if it will be available on Note 9 but I know it will definitely be there in 2019.
