Just got Mi 8 (global version) and can't see any options for face unlock? Thought this thing had dedicated stuff for it in the notch? The first update it did there was referred to adding face lock to France etc, perhaps coming in an update ,is it? Ta (UK)
Come on... Did you google for this problem? Change region of your device to for eg. India then you will get it. Only some regions got face unlock yet. Or you have to flash Xiaomi.eu rom, which I think has enabled face unlock for all regions

I came on and googled. Changing to Hong Kong region enabled face data option in lock screen an passwords. Some say India enables for them. Some say doing this affects GPS but tested and seems fine using GPS test up to 4 meters accuracy in the UK. Cheers.
Got the same issue here, was happy for a while running the Indian region, but it stops my mobile hotspot working which I need for work! Another issue I'm interested to see if you have is that Google assistant unlock features are greyed out, ie OK google doesn't unlock the phone and is not recognised unless search is open.
Is there any way of flashing to EU ROM from Official Global without voiding the extra support to keep everything official.

I have activated the Google assistant, opened the OK Google detection and access to unlock.
But it only work when I turn on screen and turn off the screen Lock.
When I turned off the screen and said the words, my device don't responded...
The snartlock doesn't work in the newest MIUI 9 global ROM for Mi Mix? or there is any other way to make it work?

It hasn't got the needed hardware for that, there used to be an xposed module that could do it on marshmallow ROMs don't know about nougat.
It DOES have the hardware - the software is blocked internally by Xiaomi and so it does pick up the device and allows you to register it - it will not allow it to unlock the screen using the default screen unlock. The feature works just fine with Xiaomi supplied bluetooth devices. This is only the case with xiaomi chinese rom and xiaomi stable rom. Eu and Epic can unlock via smartlock feature just fine.
Greetings everyone!
Yesterday I have finally purchased this awesome device (Mi 8) and one of my most desired feature was the face unlock. After I unboxed the package, I have sadly seen that there is no such option in the settings. After a few-minute research I have found out that face unlock is only available in a few countries (China, Russia, Indonesia, India AFAIK), which is a really dumb thing imho. (I mean, the expensive hardware is literally inside the device for nothing). So I have changed my region to Indonesia and voilá, the face unlock setting appeared in my settings (with a few extra apps as well. well at least I can download themes too). Long story short, I have browsed everything, including Play Store, websites through Chrome, etc but couldn't find any aspect where the region setting would change anything at all. No Indonesian content at all (except for 1-2 Mi apps, which I literally never use). Could anyone tell me how region setting affect my phone? I couldn't find a single answer anywhere.
Also, as far as I know some Mi services are unavailable in the EU since the GDPR regulation (Themes store, etc.). Did the company disable the face unlock for the same reason? Are there any information whether these apps + face unlock will ever be available here, in Europe?
Thanks for reading through my little tale and thanks for answering as well. Have a nice day! Mi Community rulez! :highfive:
I Think app like netflix and anything like netflix will be affected based on region... Using Indonesia region you will get content on netflix but specially for Indonesia viewer....
Hey, I just bought Xiaomi Pocophone and I'm facing the same issue, so I set my region to India and I'm looking for the same answer. Do you have any new info regarding the region settings affecting something on your device, coda00?

Hello!
As far as I konw face unlock will be available in an uncertain time (at least that's the rumour, which I don't really believe), but I have found the perfect solution. The custom ROM called Xiaomi.eu offers the same MIUI system as the stock one, it has the same update schedule and there are no ads, or hindi/chinese content. You can also use face unlock with whatever region you want to use, since the base ROM is chinese and the ROM is hardcoded to a given region (probably Poland, but it won't affect the usage). Hope this helps. First I really didn't want to unlock my device, but boy it really does worth it for Xiaomi.eu.
EDIT: Sorry, I just realized I did not really answer your question @ShafiX94 was right, region affects some applications content, but most applications use GPS location instead of region setting, so it does not really affects usage. Instead of Xiaomi services of course, so on stock MIUI you'll see Indian content in Music player, Mi Video, Browser, etc. So every Xiaomi app ad will be hindi.
Wow, thanks . But that would mean losing my warranty, wouldn't it?

Well, theoretically yes. Technically, not really. You can relock the phone anytime after unlocking. It takes about 10 minutes. It is easily manageable to reverse the phone to its factory state in no time and even the service can't tell if you have ever unlocked or not. Also, they really don't care about software when it comes to hardware faults. And if it comes to software fault: well, as one of my phone repair worker friend would say: there is no software issue that couldn't be fixed at home.

Haha, okay, I'll try! I was scared because last time when I unlocked my HTC I was not able to relock it! Köszönöm.
I've been messing with the Region settings and found they affect all kinds of stuff.
WIFI - if you set region to Indonesia you no longer get 5G WIFI networks
Sound/Volume - as already mentioned gets set to lower max volume in EU countries
Face Unlock - Option is not available if you set your region to USA
Application - Different applications get hidden or displayed based on region
Themes - Get the message that themes aren't available when region is set to EU
What else did I miss?

Wow. Nice little research. I wonder why these infos can't be found anywhere. Thanks for the update. The face unlock and application part was clear but I didn't know about WiFi. Nevertheless, Xiaomi.eu is a way to go
Hi all, after changing to EU rom from Chinese rom, I notice voice assistant won't stay switched on and is greyed out. I can use voice input for other features (keyboard, assistant) but to try set up OK google or retrain my voice, it is all greyed out in Voice Match settings.
Can't find any other threads for this or tips. All google results tips don't work.
Any suggestions out there?
I noticed the same! curious on what others have experienced.
+1 Me too
yup, same here! Tried a coup-le of methods suggested and eventually gave up. For now my fix is holding the AI button activates Google Assisstant. Also saves on battery drainage this way instead of the phone always listening for the magic words "ok google"
I never use this feature, but I can confirm that it's not working too on my device
EU rom is based on Chinese Rom, I have read somewhere their feedback about this. Generally, they can't make OK Google works on EU rom, at least for the time being. If you desperately need it, Global rom is the only choice.
If I bought my MI9 on netherlands, does it come stock with the xiaomi.eu ROM ?

No it comes with an official global rom.
xiaomi.eu is a kind of custom rom so you will need to unlock and flash it.
Mine is not greyed out, but when I try to enable "Access with voice match" it says "Something went wrong. Try again later" and it's not enabling.
Xiaomi.eu 9.4.25
Sent from my MI 9 using Tapatalk
Same here. Mi 9 global 10.2.28.0. can't activate access with voice match.
I've got the original Vivo Nex Chinese version and one thing it is missing is Android Smart Lock which allows you to keep the phone unlocked at set GPS coordinates. So I when I'm at work or home I can set it so my phone stays unlocked and as soon as I leave it automatically locks. Does anyone know if that feature is available in the global ROM of the Nex 3?

I'm using global rom one. Same thing. I think it's vivo security measure (just like how you can't reply messages from the lock screen)
Thanks for the info. Also, where did you buy your global version from?
HI Guys,
I just bought this phone for sure I love it but I live in an area where VoLTE is and VoWifi is a must to have due to poor mobile reception
I used the dial in numbers to get VoLte and and Vowifi activated got success and was able to switch them on from Mobile network menu, but they aren't working at all I tried with flight mode on and off for Vowifi same thing, tried sim card from another network no use, and signs for VoLTE or Vowifi hasn't come on notification panel also
I am on Global Rom
MIUI Version 12.5.10 (RKDMIXM)
Does anyone knows any solution to this
Thanks in advance
I've had a problem with my carrier and Wi-Fi calling which I had to fix myself. Xiaomi do nothing except bundle the default carrier settings and very little testing is done if any. There is a good chance the carrier configuration settings for your carrier are missing or broken.
If you can let me know the carrier and country you are trying to get it to work with I will take a look at the modem configuration settings for that carrier and see if it has anything in it for VoWiFi or VoLTE.
Getting it fixed however, unless you go down the technical route of using Qualcomm debug tools and unlocking the bootloader and rooting, the chances of getting it fixed is close to zero. Xiaomi have never looked at the bug report I filed months ago.
HI Philip,
Thank you for the response I am in Australia using Telstra network, I tried Optus Sim as well having the same issue with it, the only solution I could find is in below link
https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/3rppj4r3
It says have to enter into Modem test tools to change region and network to Australia which isn't possible without unlocking the bootloader, I have requested bootloader unlock permission if it doesn't help will need to switch the phone

I've looked at the modem configuration file relating to IWLAN and the settings are there. It is noted a Certificate is required to join the IWLAN for VoWiFi so it is possible that certificate isn't on the phone or is now out of date so a connection isn't allowed. It is also possible other configuration settings in the config file are out of date and need updating. If it is possible to get another carrier modem file to work, then often other things can break, but at least that would give a pointer to what changes need to be made by comparing the two.
It should be noted that Xiaomi don't really test these devices everywhere and they seem to just use the default Qualcomm provided carrier modem files and hope for the best in any particular country. You can use the feedback options to tell them of a problem but in my experience you will never get a response and in my case they've never opened a linked file with extra information (on Google drive so I can see who last opened it).
Regarding the other forum info, well I've not been able to get the modem test tool working on the 11T Pro (says to contact the modem team for permission), and the forum posts suggest we need weekly test ROMs where the permissions are enabled, however there are no weekly ROMs for the 11T Pro as far as I know. The next best thing is to modify the same settings using the Qualcomm debug tools, this takes some effort to get working.

I can confirm the Xiaomi.eu ROMs contain exactly the same modem files (they don't touch them), so I doubt very much it will be any different. By all means give it a go if you like.
Hi Philip,
Have you checked EEA firmware if that has it?

Yes I checked the EEA firmware. From what I've seen investigating my own issues with VoWiFi is that all the firmware regardless of region contain the same standard Qualcomm modem files, even across different devices, not just the 11T Pro.
Did you try to disable carrier check? Dial *#*#86583#*#* in phone and then the VoLTE option would appear into sim options.
