Hi there, I just got this device to replace my Moto e2015 that took a dive with me in a lake. I was wondering if root access was available, I haven't found any clear guides on how to do it. Model is a H8276 running 51.1.A.11.51
Currently if you gain root you loose camera...
I see
That is if you gain root via unlocking bootloader and simply flashing su/root manager your camera stops working.
Unlocking bootloader on Sony device will wipe your Sony drm keys. Losing Sony drm keys for unlocked bootloader is normal for Sony Devices.
Sony Drm keys gives your device access to features Sony believes are their intellectual property and do not want to share with untrusted devices. These features include display enhancement, camera enhancement, audio enhancement, content access, device integration etc.
Xz2 device without drm keys currently has an issue with its camera working at all. This has happened before with older Sony devices, in the past Sony has corrected similar "camera totally unusable without drm" in later firmware updates. But Sony may also not "fix" this ever. 3rd party Devs may be able to "fix" with fake drm keys for the device.
Devs are currently working on getting 3rd party code running correctly. Our great devs and their helpful testers appear to be getting fairly close, check out the rom forum threads for latest info.
It is likely the camera issue is not deliberate by Sony but instead an unattended side effect that Sony see as super low priority to fix.
There is no publically known root methods for a device with locked bootloader. Eg Android and Sony security protections seem to be doing what they should and are preventing unauthorised access to the device, which is both great and sad.

Yep.
Extract kernel.sin and use unsin.exe to convert it into kernel.elf which you then rename to boot.img.
Patch the boot.img via Magisk and then flash it via adb and you're good to go!

Once again thanks for your help

As you know there are not many kernel options for ZR as in Z you have to unlock bootloader to root the phone to flash it with CWM or any other recovery.
So this is detailed Guide to root Xperia ZR & having Locked Bootloader
1) Don't upgrade your phone to 4.2.2_10.3.1.A.2.67 Firmware & If you already updated it to Downgrade it to 4.1.2_10.1.1.a.1.310 Firmware In Flash mode Using Flashtool 9.13 (Download Flashtool 9.11 install it After upgrade it with 9.12 & 9.13) don't unlock bootloader.
2)Now Root it Using DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit. to root just click runme.bat. Your phone will get root access & you will get Superuser app
3)Then use Backup-TA-9.8 to backup your TA.img & save it at any Safe location for further Use ( It Content DRM Data & must be saved throughout lifespan of your phone).
4)Now upgrade your phone to 10.3.1.A.2.67 either by OTA or Using Sony PC companion & if you are unable to get upgrade don't panic just use flashtool & flash the 4.1.2_10.1.1.a.1.310 again & try the OTA upgrade. (As i do have both for Indian region but attachments will be too big to Attach here).
5)Now install Vroot on your PC & root your phone with it. Now you can see that your bootloader got unlocked but don't panic install SuperSu from Playstore update binary for it reboot your phone. now freeze Superuser from Vroot using titanium backup then update binary for SuperSu. Now convert Superuser from Vroot into user app using Titanium Backup. Reboot Your phone update binary for SuperSu & uninstall superuser from Vroot.
6)Now Use BLU button From Flashtool. on pressing BLU button Flashtool it will prompt to start phone in flash mode to unlock bootloader just do as prompted but dont disconnect the phone after boot loader just hit the BLU button to re-lock bootloader. Reboot your phone.
7)Now just flash Back-up your TA Using Backup-TA-9.8.
8)Congratulation now you have rooted phone with locked bootloader with full functionality.
I wrote this because i just lost DRM data things cant be undone.
SO for all Niewbies this is guide to ROOT ZR with Locked BootLoader.

May i know why DRM is important and what is it used for?
good guide. only problems are...
there are a LOT of exact same guides floating around for MONTHS already. why do u feel u need to make a new one?
also, where are your credits and permissions to share other ppls' work here?
and also, there are those easy 1-click solutions available for MONTHS already and most ppl use that now instead of this complicated method which is outdated and troublesome...
oh one more thing after i read thru it again...

OK i agree there are there are many guide for rooting but all are applicable to Z or Zl having many kernel options. not as Zr which has very few kernel option.
Try any Method except vroot on Zr & tell me which are more useful.
Even vroot unlocks bootloader so to get root with 4.1 without unlocking bootloader is precautionary because accidental wipe of Ta partition may void Warranty.
This is not for pro who can build kernel for those who knew very less about android, to avoid them all pain i suffered.
& again i joined this forum 4 days ago as you think but i used this subscribed it 4 years ago with my first X10 & used it Since then anonymously as i lost my password for cant retrieve it.
& Tell me What is inaccurate i will try it Myself.
If you think its ridiculous why you haven't posted how to Root Zr it would have saved me a lot of pain.
So as you done nothing before stay as you are at least i m trying to save pain of others.

DRM data is Digital Rigths Management Data which links purchased data to your phone without which you cant use data u purchased. More Important without which warranty voids, Bravia Engine seizes to work properly as it works with DRM Data. & Track Id downloaded from Market will not integrate with walkman which are Sony proprietary software's.

hmm... i don't get any sort of crap from that software on my PC... maybe cos i was smart enough not to just blindly click Next all the way. IE/reg/security settings are all fine (part of my job is IT security so i know when weird things come into my PC)
as for the screenshot of the superuser app "dialing home", well one of the first few things i did was to replace it with SuperSU...
what..?? I've never seen a rooting procedure which unlocks the BL... and that last one absolutely doesn't need to be unlocked for rooting ! Honestly, I've serious doubts about your intentions. Why the hell do you tell upgrading, flashing, flashing back and blabla... this is too complicated.
Get vroot or kingo root, that's all you need

All,
I am going round in circles, so hopefully someone will be able to point me in the correct direction.
I have an Xperia Z regretably updated to android version : 4.4.2 / kernel version : 3.4.0-perf-g32ce454 / Build number : 10.5.A.0.230.
I wish to root the phone so I can install Avast antivirus / theft and Titianium Pro basically so I can get rid of the dross Apps and protect my data should my phone get stolen.
All I want to do is root the phone , I do not need to install any custom roms.
I have tried Androxyde's Xperia flashing tool v0.9.16.1 which reports my phone cannot be offically unlocked (bootloader?) and also reports "part1 exploit did not work" when trying to root the phone.
Doomlord's Easy Rooting toolkit v18 gets to *start daemon*, *daemon started* and then just sits there.
So does anyone know how to simply get root access for the Xperia Z running 4.4.2 ?
Thanks
Smess
PS I did encrypt my phone and then found you cannot backup your data to your PC, fine idea epic fail.
Now factory reset to remove encryption.

Well firstly, you should download towelroot from the actual source towelroot.com.
Edit - It appears there's a problem with the website's certificate at the moment, so I assume that why androidtweaker1 linked to elsewhere. ?
Edit 2 - It appears to be fixed now.
Secondly, root exploits trigger AV software because technically they use a security hole to push files to /system. Malware would use similar techniques, but there's nothing to worry about in this case. Either temporarily disable your AV or download straight to your phone.

You need to read bilboa1's guide completely, before you start and make backups of your TA partition for good measure.
Unfortunately, you will need to downgrade your firmware to an older version, then root it, add recovery. Then you will be able to flash a pre-rooted MM build.
Don't use kingroot.

Kingroot sends all your phones details and account information, including your IMEI number to an unknown server in China, leaving you open to the possibility of a clone of your phone. It uses several legacy apk's that behave like malware and are hard to remove, it's also difficult to move onto normal root (SuperSU) and you will always have problems .
Hey so do you think the blu advance 5.0 hd will be compatible with the work being done on the R1 hd? I would really like to jump on this hype train with my similar but slightly less powerful phone.

I was able to root mine successfully the long way.... had to obtain a dump of the boot.img / recovery.img using software that I'm not sure of the policy of discussion on here at XDA - compile TWRP - unlock bootloader - fastboot boot the compiled recovery - flash SuperSU to get patched boot.img (kitchen was being dumb and systemless root didn't want to work) - Flash SuperSU in system mode - Convert SuperSU.apk to system app so it doesn't get removed every reboot. I can post my compiled TWRP when I'm back at my office or grab it from my repository that I'm trying to establish - https://bluroms.info . Sorry for the design mess / lack of much there at moment haven't had much free time lately in process of cleaning up the device kernel sources to build from source... its sort of ... messy in there...... can post on github if anyone wants in

I've been trying to root a Blu Advance 5.0 HD for a while now and stumbled on this post. I visited your site but am not sure what a 'Scatter File' is, or in what order I need to do things in order to get root.
If you could provide a little more detailed info that would be very much appreciated.

EDIT: Sorry, to clarify I tried all of the other PC and APK rooting solutions but was able to unlock the bootloader using ADB. I guess I'm just looking for the proper way to root and add TWRP. Thanks!

I found a option in developer settings that is "Enable OEM unlocking" and it makes it so you can unlock the bootloader from fastboot, if you do adb reboot-bootloader and then fastboot unlock it should undo the bootloader for you

I too am trying to root this device, and am unclear on a few of the steps here. I actually found your site with the recovery and boot images independently, really appreciated! I am at the point where I just need to patch the boot image, though I am not sure how to do this. If you could help me out with this step I might be able to put together some sort of list of steps to get through the whole process if you don't have the time.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
As most of you know already from my other postings, I have a Verizon Xperia Z4V.
I have the dreaded bootloader unlock allowed = no at the moment (even though I have a Sony Dev. fastboot unlock code from their web tool)so am looking for a method to root the phone so I can extract the cdma radio and uhd screen drivers and use various other kernel sources to compile new ROM's
I have fastboot, and adb access.
So far, NOTHING has worked. Flashtool has come closest with the service menu exploit, however I cannot re-create what it did the first time.
The device is using 5.0.2 with kernel version : 3.10.49-perf-g301bca8-01952-g67d95bb / Platform : 64bits / Build number : 28.0.E.0.570
I know the device is NOT directly supported by any scripts, but it seems to me something should work from a similar device. After all, the only differences are the cdma radio and the screen resolution.
Any ideas?

Sort Of? Well, I have Flashtool running on my PC and all drivers working. KingRoot runs and achieves root. Flashtool then recognizes root and pushes files and deactivates RIC. Then I get a crash or reboot on the phone, when it returns, root is gone.
Any ideas how to get it done?

If i can get root for 15 seconds is there anyway i can flash a recovery or defeat RIC so I can keep it and begin to work on this phone??
Thanks,
Rick

15 or 30 seconds is a bit short in time ...
Prophylaxis is key first (not breaking anything): create a backup of the kernel image/partition
https://android.stackexchange.com/q...img-and-recovery-img-from-sony-xperia-e4-dual (that example is with a MediaTek chipset so mostly different still a good starting point though)
you need to find out which partitions contain what data and create a dump / dd image as a backup of boot.img

Any ideas?

Just a small thing you may forgot, USB debugging mode to be on (for non carrier specific Z4) and you can use Flashtool for unlocking bootloader.
Before unlocking bootloader, take backup of DRM keys and important data.
New info. I can get root with Kingroot...I can manipulate using Flashtool. RIC is deactivated...after a short while phone reboots.
Any ideas?!! I'd really like to be able to use this phone.
