Hey guys,
I recently purchased a Mi5 in China and had a hellish experience trying to get a working rooted international ROM on it even though I am definitely not a noob at android. I found out that most issues I had were result of small/stupid mistakes that can be easily avoided with the proper knowledge, so I decided to write a super quick how to on the process for anyone that might need it in the future. There are similar guides out there, and I will refer to some (all credit goes to original posters) but I found that most are incomplete/not updated/plain wrong. Please also note that this guide is updated to June 20th, newer ROM versions might require different steps.
This how to assumes you are familiar with the standard ROM flashing process, in case anyone needs a more detailed explaination of some of the steps, you can reply or search XDA elsewhere, most of the stuff has been mentioned here and there before.
1. Check that your hardware is ok (dial *#*#64663#*#* in dialer, you will enter hardware test mode, check every single item carefully)
2. Request a bootloader unlock from Xiaomi, unlock the bootloader: follow instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5/how-to/unlocking-xiaomi-mi-5-bootloader-t3336243
3. Now that Your bootloader is unlocked, you have 3 main options for working ROMs: Xiaomi's Global Stable, Xiaomi's Global Dev, Xiaomi.eu's unofficial Stable. If you want to play it safe, I suggest to go with the Xiaomi's Global Stable, otherwise choose Xiaomi.eu's unofficial Stable. I did not test extensively all three, so this is just a general recommendation.
4. In any case, you will need to use the official Xiaomi's flashing tool (Miflash) to do your first ROM flash. Just follow the process here: http://en.miui.com/a-234.html and you'll have flashed your new ROM. In case you want to flash Xiaomi.eu's unofficial Stable, follow the same process but get the flashable ROM here: https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/xiaomi-eu-multilang-rom-for-xiaomi-mi5-unlocked-bl-only-released.31231/
5. Boot into your newly flashed ROM, check once again that hardware is ok (see step 1.). Please also see step 10b for a tidbit of additional info if You're in China.
6. Reboot into bootloader, boot (only boot, no need to install) TWRP, which you can find here as part of Xiaomi.eu's thread above in step 4. inside a zip packaged with a modded bootloader image. do NOT install the modded bootloader image. Also, this is the only version of TWRP that I found working for my device. There are a couple more versions from chinese developers (cofface, ganfan), but booting either resulted in blank screen.
7. Once you are in TWRP, the recovery will ask you for a decryption password, just press cancel, then "Swipe to allow modifications"
8. Sideload (you cannot install from internal storage since you will not be able to access it at the moment) the latest SuperSU stable, which you can find here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053. Please note that you WILL need the latest version, anything earlier might just get you a bootloop. And please do NOT format /Data to make it accessible to TWRP as that will also likely result in bootloop. Just sideload whatever you need.
9. Do NOT wipe Dalvik or Cache, reboot into System.
10. Congrats, You're done. Have a beer/coffee/tea and pat yourself on the back.
10b. In case You're in China, and this is Your first Android 5.0+ ROM, you will happen into a "bug" (it's not really a bug, but a result of China's Great Firewall), where whenever you connect to a Wifi, the phone will think you have no internet access and that will cause a whole host of issues (won't reconnect automatically, will try to default to 4G etc.). If so, just enable ADB Debugging and type adb shell "settings put global captive_portal_server httpstat.us/204" . That will mostly solve it (you might still get some weird result with some APs, but toggling Wifi should solve the problem for that AP forever.

After it says booting, does the screen light up? If so please check wether "adb devices" and "fastboot devices" return anything. If adb returns "recovery" or if both return empty, you're likely bumping into my same issue where the recovery won't boot (to me this happened regardless of whether I flashed or booted it). Are you using the specific recovery version from my point 6?

no, nothing happens on the screen, it stays in fb mode without any reaction. adb and fb devices doesn't return any device connected.. if i do an fb reboot it told me "waiting for any device" so the only option to get it run again is to power off.. yes of course, it's the recovery.img with the modified boot.img..

i want only to inform you, i get it to work.. the problem was my rom, miui 8.. for miui 8 you will need a new version of twrp, which you can download here: https://yadi.sk/d/oj6Z-0u7sXdw6 after that, i was able to boot to the twrp recovery without flashing it, so i keept everything original like it was and was able to sideload the supersu and get root without to format my data.. when you start the recovery it came in chinese, but when you click on the right button you can choose your language.. that's it.. thank you for you support dude!!
Is it only way to switch from chinese ROM to official global ROM to have unlocked bootloader? If it is, is there any other way of unlocking it, waiting 15 days to get permission seems ridiculous.
Lovely step by step guide. But, any idea if it will wipe the user data and/or internal sdcard when moving from the chinese to international version?
Hello people
i'm aware that there are guides out there, but i'm honestly not the best at all this flashing stuff, i have done it to a few phones but this one needs to be done just right!
So, where should i begin?, i reckon i should start with unlocking the phone via the unlock tool (i am registered and accepted) and then flash TWRP via that tool?
or is the best/only way of flashing TWRP with the ADB fastboot?

my problem now is i have no idea how to get miui 7 on it. Iknow that all CM based roms will end in a bootloop if i try to flash with that on.
i have tried a number of things, last time i tried i ended up with it not detecting my sim card, so i had to revert back to Miui 8

Your thread is getting slightly confusing so let's do it step by step.
Is your phone currently unlocked?
To check, put it into fastboot mode manually without adb:
Turn off your device. Then turn on your device again while holding volume down button.
Plug in your device. Use fastboot:
Code:
fastboot oem device-info
Post screenshots.
Reboot your phone. Post a screenshot of your "About phone" settings menu.

I also tried this way.But not miflash tool. I use twrp to flash global stable rom, boot up the rom and flash twrp through fastboot. And then you can flash your favourite rom.
Hi,
sorry to hijack this thread, but i also have problem flashing TWRP.
I have unlocked phone.
I have USB debugging enabled.
I can reboot to fastboot via adb.
I ca flash twrp (twrp-3.0.2-1-gemini.img 25.2M 2016-07-19 18:48:36 EDT).
But when i go to recovery i still see Mi PcSuite thing. No twrp.
What am i doing wrong? IS there some other, more appropriate twrp image?

I got mine sorted out, what you are missing is when you are done flashinh you have to type "Fastboot reboot" and then set TWRP to default recovery
hope that helps you out
Same problem for me, when i type "Fastboot reboot", my Mi5 reboot quickly and after when i go to recovery i see also Mi PC Suite....
Do you have a workaround ?
Second question, is it normal that time to send TWRP.img to phone in ADB is only 0,9s ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=69249337
sent from my MI5
Hi all
Unfortunately, I'm having serious problems with my new Mi8, which arrived yesterday. It arrived with Global ROM and opened Bootloader.
Switch On, set up, data from the Mi6 pulled by NFC, all tutti. the Mi account I have connected here too.
Then I wanted to play the xiaomi.eu. TWRP installed via "Minimal adb and fastboot", installed via TWRP then the xiaomi.eu-ROM (newest). Has also worked. When setting up the point that I can play back via NFC what was not displayed, or I have overlooked him. Okay, again from the beginning, I thought. Have then reset the phone to factory settings to repeat the device.
Then the phone stuck in the bootloop. Again and again the Mi logo appeared and "unlocked", disappeared and came back, disappeared and came back. I did not get into the TWRP anymore, just into the fastboot.
On advice of different users on FB and another forum I should flash the Global ROM again over the MiFlash tool, which I did then also. Unfortunately I carelessly chose "Flash-and-Lock" and closed the boot loader. Unfortunately, this flash did not work and the phone now only starts in recovery mode 3.0
Due to the closed boot loader, it is not possible for me to install TWRP again, to flash another ROM with MiFlashTool. Also, the Unlock tool does not work, because I get the error message that the device is not linked to my account. I have also tried to install a recovery mod on the Xiaomi PC suite, as the bar remains on the PC but at 0%, on the phone remains the image with the pictured Mi8, after I in the recovery menu "Connect with MiAssistent "selected. Otherwise nothing happens.
With the latest version of the PC suite flashing works, but still boots the box in the recovery mode and the red font remains. Another user in the other forum said that I need the CN version, because on the CN device no EU-Rome is allowed. The CN version is rejected by the PC suite not get verified.
What else can I do. Do you have an idea that helps me getting the phone back on track?
This, for me, is the biggest joke of Xiaomi! Many users are getting stuck in this new policy! That does not exist! A total lack of respect for brand lovers. Let the developers figure out how to reverse this.
try CN Dev version, is latest and best,
forget xiaomi.eu rom lol, almost all they do you can do by yourself within minutes, uninstalling few chinese apps and get google works with googleinstaller_v3. and dev rom have root. just suggestion.
I tried the last cn-version, but the pc-suite dont verify this ROM and dont flash it.

Miflasher dont work, because the bootloader is locked.
To OP and the issue at hand, have you tried the fastboot image to install chinese stable or developer rom? That should flash and allow you to unlock bootloader again.
To the people whining about this policy of Xiaomi, you are buying a product for a different market. There is nothing wrong with their policy and you should wait for global version of the phone if you want global image with locked bootloader. It's a little like complaining that the chinese MMO you play over vpn doesn't have english menus. Well no, it's not for that market.

I tried only the chinese recovery rom for flashing with the pc-suite. The fastboot image, I can only flash with twrp or miflashtool, right? TWRP dont work, I cant boot in it. And miflashtool says, as I tried to flash the global rom, that it isnt allowed to erase a locked device.

Nah, the fastboot image flashes best in my experience if you unpack it, all the way. You will get some folders and .bat files. make sure you have fastboot in either PATH or same directory make sure fastboot detects the image and after that run the flash_all.bat and it should flash it.

That dont work, because the bootloader is locked. Fastboot says too, that it isnt allowed because the lock, same when I try to install twrp on the locked phone.

Hmm you tried "fastboot oem unlock" also right?
Yes, I tried. Result in a failef, I remember.
Token verify failed
Have my Mi 8 about a week, loving it BUT as the bootloader is unlocked I couldn't use Google Pay so I decided to install TWRP and get the Xiaomi.eu ROM.
I just installed TWRP and tried backing up the phone, but I got an error saying it Can not create the folder. I reinstalled TWRP, thinking maybe there was an issue with the first install but now it's stuck in a recovery boot loop. It loads to the MI screen with the unlocked icon but doesn't get to the powered by android, it goes straight into recovery.
The Rom is not on the device and I thought maybe could install it through the recovery but if I have the phone plugged into the laptop (Windows 10) and go into recovery, the touch screen on the phone doesn't work and the phone keeps rebooting itself.
I can also get into Fastboot and the device is detected by miFlash.
What should I do next, I don't trust my instincts. Any advice would be much appreciated. I'm currently downloading the Global Rom off Xiaomi (going to take a while on my 3mb broadband) and hoping I can flash that with miFlash tool, good or bad idea??
U can use otg usb and put the rom on it.
Boot to twrp and wipe data (the one that ask you to say yes? Than install the rom(choose one for recovery flashing not fastboot)

Cheers for the reply! Unfortunately I don't have an adapter to put the rom on the phone. I'll order one now, always good to have for situations like this.
Any other way of getting the phone up and running sooner? If not, no problem, I'll just have to wait for the adapter.

Sure there must be a fastboot method but didn't tried it yet, i had this phone 3 days ago
Not sure if after formatting data and reboot to twrp you can copy the rom from pc to phone.
One more thing if you use fastboot method be sure not to relock the bootloader cause you may brick ur phone.
If you want to install xiaomi.eu rom dont just wipe data but you have to format data then type yes. Reboot to twrp again. And at twrp recopy the xiaomi.eu rom.

the only right answer, all other are more or less useless.
you need to wipe data, then format data (confirm with yes)
after that, hold power+up to reboot in twrp again
(or go to mainmenu and choose reboot to recovery),
connect your Mi8 with Usb cable to PC and copy the xiaomi.eu rom to your mi8
and then flash it.

Cheers for the advice, I'll make sure to format before installing. Only issue now is that I can't get the rom onto the phone to install it. Do you reckon if I format the data through TWRP it will then allow me to copy over the rom onto the device? Currently, unless in fastboot, the laptop doesn't recognise the device - constantly reboots the phone causing it to connect and disconnect.

I like the sound of this solution but I have a few questions/need clarification as this mess has made me doubt myself (no issue flashing my previous phone mi5)
I downloaded the Global rom from here: http://en.miui.com/download-346.html#523 (just want clarification this is the official rom) I have the latest version of the miFlash. Am I right in thinking, put phone into fastboot, launch tool, locate unzipped rom folder, select 'Clean all' (and not save user data / clean all and lock (presume this means bootloader)) and click Flash??
And then do I start again, flash TWRP and hope it works?

If I do this (wipe data and format) will the laptop detect the device to allow me to move the rom onto the phone, currently it doesn't (well it loops between connecting and disconnecting when in TWRP, no issue detecting in fastboot)
normally if twrp is launched, you can copy files as usual from pc to your Mi8
should be a stable connection.. (Win7/10 or any other Win)
if it keeps connecting/disconnecting you can try an other usb port.

I've tried several USB ports and different cables, no luck getting it to connect.
No the TWRP installed is 3.2.1-0611-XIAOMI8, yours uses the code name and seems to be a newer version and more legit, I'm going to flash that onto the phone. I presume do it the way I did it before - fastboot, shift right click to get to cmd line...etc.
I did indeed enable usb debugging when I installed it originally.
By the way, thanks so much for your help, I'm lost without my phone - it was love at first sight
Fastboot Flashing Code
Code:
Fastboot boot Twrp.img
Flash the recovery img again inside twrp and reboot to recovery again and it will stay.
If u are new to twrp, format data in twrp and reboot to recovery again and flash this file https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=3700668719832238534 after that u can flash the rom.

Boot the TWRP img and then flash it through TWRP, I've never done it this way before (have I been doing this worng all along?)
and whats the other file about? Disable_Dm-Verity_FEC_v1.1.zip
Sorry about all the questions
you can flash/update twrp inside twrp itself, but you dont need it.
I never used any tools or bat files, just normally installed adb,
and put the twrp.img in the same folder.
then open cmd:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
to boot into twrp again:
fastboot boot twrp.img
never heard from this fec1.1 zip, so ignore it.

Right, so I got TWRP 3.2.3 installed and seems to be working (not disconnecting and reconnecting) BUT the phone is still not recognsed - It says unspecified in the devices . I ran through the ADB set up, all installed including drivers but still no phone showing up. I hate windows 10 and drivers, can't get them to play nice (or it's me)
I had never any problems with Win10 x64,
I dnever installed any driver for my Mi5/6 and now 8,
win10 detects everything automatically, if you have installed any driver, maybe just
uninstall them and restart win10

Forget my above nonsense and babble, PC wasn't happy with whatever was going on, once I got brave enough and actually followed your instructions in all fell into place!!
So conclusion -
I had the wrong TWRP (3.2.3 is needed)
PC didn't like whatever was happening without the OS
Wiped and formatted through TWRP - Phone was recognised
Dragged Xiaomi.eu rom over - copied perfectly
Flashed rom - successful and the wiped cache again to be safe
Rebooted and my smile came back the moment I saw the 'powered by android' icon
Went through set up and I'm back in.
Mi 8 - bootloop and locked device, no system, help?
Hi guys,
I did a pretty much bad thing on my phone, I've just bought it 2 weeks ago and I was loving the phone, my phone is unlocked but today I was rooting to install google camera with night sight and I don't know why my twpr was really weird, when pressing install all the folder that was showing was very different from youtube videos about mi 8 root and even compared to my old devices, it was showing folders like licence and others, but the weirdest was inside the sdcard folder that was showing a lot of unnamed folders(like this: 54u3hu6ijj4!ji5), the thing got worse when I've flashed magisk and the phone got stuck on bootloop, after that tried to flash a stock global rom from official Mi website on fastboot mode using Mi Flash Toll, what I did wrong is that I didn't see that the Lock option was ticked and than I pressed to flash, everything was going good when my device showed a message saying that the Miui wasn't compatible with my phone. After that I've tried to install TWPR again but my phone was locked by the Mi flash toll and know my device is without system and unlocked. I've also tried to unlock but is saying that my account is not bound to my device, so I have no idea what to do, I'm gonna never root any phone ever, worse thing I did.
Can Anybody know what I can do to unlock the phone?
Sorry about my English, that's not my native language.
Hey everyone
I recently got this phone and went through the bootloader unlock process.
I then tried to follow the instructions on this page https://wiki.pixelexperience.org/devices/rosemary/install/ to get this rom installed but somehow ****ed it up.
Everything went well until I tried to flash the recovery img from this page: https://get.pixelexperience.org/rosemary (i downloaded the 13 plus recovery img).
I flashed the img via fastboot but after that I got stuck in fastboot. The phone is stuck in a bootloop when I try to reboot into recovery or normal boot. The only thing I can get back into is fastboot.
Would really appreciate any help to get the phone working again. Im not new to android custom roms but Im new to xiaomi phones and Im a little lost
Thanks.
OK nevermind I successfully got the phone booting again with miflash tool by reflashing an official firmware...
Greetings!
You can install the rom via adb sideload too. Put on some random recovery (see my tutorial here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/twrp-on-android-12.4522273/), and start adb sideload.
Then,
adb sideload insert_package_name.zip

Greetings!
As this phone has an MTK processor, we don't really have a recovery image, it's stored in the boot img I suppose. That link, you can download the official rom to this. DISCLAIMER: There are two types of ROMs listed here, one type is fastboot, that you need now in order to flash it through a computer for example. The another type is the recovery rom, that you can flash from recovery like a magisk package, or anything flashable zip, or with adb sideload.
https://mifirm.net
You should choose global if you are in Europe, but it's suitable for devices in the US or USA probably, ony feature differences are here between an EEA and Global rom.
Also, if you install pixel experience recovery, you can install the firmware by going into recovery, and do it via sideload. Or, you can try flashing the rom with TWRP (tutorial linked below), but then you won't able to install updates automatically.
One question: Did you checked in OEM unlocking in developer options before flashed PE?
Hope it helps!
Yeah, I did checked the oem unlocking. I think the reason why i failed because my bootloader probably updated and I forgot to check. You need bootloader version 12.5.16.0.RKLMIXM to install the pixel experience. Also thank for help
Greetings!
You can install the rom via adb sideload too. Put on some random recovery (see my tutorial here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/members/gurtnyi.11842195), and start adb sideload.

Can I do that on newer firmware or should I roll back to version 12.5.16.0.RKLMIXM? And if I roll back then I need to unlock device again?
I think you can. I've flashed it successfully on the latest version too. Currently I don't use PE but it was good for me.
Well, regarding to the unlock, it's not a big deal, you don't have to wait 168h again, once you've firstly unlocked your device, you can re-unlock it again, and again, no matter how many times, you don't have to wait a lot again.
But depending on how you rollback it,
I mean, with xiaomi flasher (i think that's its name) you can choose between clean all and lock, save userdata, and clean all, but in the first case, it'll lock back the bootloader. With SP flash tool (if you need, I can provide a link for the modified version of it, that doesn't require an auth file, but if fails, you need a python script, I can link that too), as I remember it won't lock back the device, but I'm not a 100% sure
Hope it helps!

Corrected, thank you!
Thank you! I managed to install PE by rolling back to MIUI 12.5. Sideload unfortunatly not working on stock recovery.

Happy to hear that!
By the way, yes, pe recovery is better for sideloading, or eventually any not stock recovery. Also, if you install PE recovery, you can apply updates automatically, and in the future you won't need to flash it manually.
