Possible to get USA LTE bands working? - Xiaomi Mi A2 / 6X Questions & Answers

Hey, I am a first time user of xda and I don't know much about modding android devices as I am more experienced with nintendo devices. I am getting the MI A2 and do not want a large bricking risk. I have heard of a guide that unlocks more bands on a Qualcomm device. I am not sure of the risk of trying this and would like to see if anyone knows of it's possibilities.
I have looked a long time for an android phone as I recently made the switch from Apple as I believe it is a horrible company. It seems that the best value phones with the newest Operating Systems come from China. I'm sure everyone would love to see a $400 phone here in the US go for $200 and be fully compatible with AT&T and T-mobile.
(Edit) Link to the thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/cr...ad-progress-please-leave-im-updating-t2871269
From my understanding this thread says that Qualcomm SOCs have cellular radios compatible with many bands and standards, but locks are placed in software for legal or business reasons.

Welcome to the Android forums.
I've never heard of 'unlocking bands'. My understanding is the bands advertised for the version you get (Global, North America, etc etc), are the only bands on the phone.
The MiA2 does have LTE bands that work with T-Mo. I believe the 2 bands that work are the 2 primary bands T-Mo uses. T-Mo 71 is the new 600 MHz, which very few phones have (but it would certainly be nice to have). But the 2 it has are B2 and B4, again, their most prominently used I think. These 2 also cover AT&T.
2G and 3G are completely covered. I personally don't use data so just switch to 2G for the better building penetration.
Cheers

That's the thing, I'm worried to try it because I don't want my only phone to end up a brick. I am not sure if bricked, it would be repairable. As I said I am new to android. I just want to know the risks.

No, you cannot "UNLOCK" bands. It's mostly hardware controlled or very low level firmware.
If the manufacturer could enable it, they probably would.

I used qxdm and unlocked the extra bands. Manufacurers that release several variants of the phone will often times not change their manufacturing process, just the firmware and software. The Mi a2 to 6x conversion is a good example. They support different bands, although they are the same hardware. I was able to enable all bands for TMobile USA. This actually works very well. The sd660 has support for all bands, it is just a matter of software enabling it and the antennas being built in.
This is the tutorial I followed. https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/how-to-add-rf-lte-frequency-bands-to-t2886059
I also downloaded "hidden android settings" by 0alex, open it and select radio info, then tap the dropdown under "set preferred network type" and choose the "LTE/CDMA/UMTS auto (PRL)"
then exit the app and go to settings > Network and internet > Mobile Network, press the Advanced option, then make sure your preferred network type is set to 4g. This gives me the best results in the USA.
I am currently working on getting VoLTE up and running because every time I get a call it switches to 3g.

Frequency support is first and foremost a matter of hardware, particularly power amplifiers, filters and antennas. It is true that the integrated modems of modern SoCs - including the Snapdragon 660 used in the A2 - can handle many frequency bands but as you can see in below diagram (btw from Qualcomm, the manufacturer of the Snapdragon) there are much more components involved to actually render a device compatible to the various frequency bands:

I'm not sure what exactly you have done to your phone as the linked tutorial is four years old and refers to various outdated methods and Android versions which do not work on the Xiaomi A2. But the best you might have achieved by those QPST operations is making your phone believe it can handle additional frequency bands when in fact it can't because it lacks the necessary hardware. That can actually adversely affect your phone's performance as it will attempt to connect to cells operating in those "unlocked" frequency bands but due to its inappropriate hardware the radio link will be bad or even completely break down leaving you without a signal. Especially for a phone supporting 4x4 MIMO (LTE category 12) the antennas, amplifiers and filters require a lot of fine tuning which you can't do by software.
Would you perhaps have some screenshots of your phone actually being attached to a cell in an unlocked frequency band (LTE Discovery does show this kind of information) and could you perhaps also perform a speedtest to see if the throughput is appropriate?
Unless we have some bullet-proof evidence of such modification delivering the usual performance on the unlocked frequency bands I would warn anyone against messing around with their phone's low-level radio configuration.

Does this affect system OTA?

i have bought this phones also in hopes of using it with metropcs 4g lte . I have looked on the computer for days now without really getting any good info until i saw this post. i am anxiously awaited more info from you all. especially inquistor. u seem to know what your talking about.

In a day I had a Nexus 5 I bought in USA and couldn't use Israeli 4G because of the same problem. I've managed to do what you're looking for.
Many years have passed since then, but maybe this can still help you in your quest.
Take a look at this thread for more info: https://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/radio-enable-lte-band-3-nexus-5-d820-t2928561

I did. I used qxdm 04.00.124. It has more access than what is provided in qxdm 3. Qualcomm changed a few places that the configs were stored. If you can get a hold of qxdm 4+ then it should work. the trouble is that it is not widely available and is not cracked. so you have to pay or know someone who owns it (my case). I also had to modify a few things in the file editor from qxdm. (cant remember what it was called) but I had to add the frequencies to the t-mobile usa tables. If someone wants to dig around, I can verify it is possible. It has been a bit and I thought others found out as well. I may make a guide if nobody else does soon. I just don't have a ton of time lately. I also would have to re-learn what I did. it was like a month ago..

.... in the Guides, News & Discussions area. 4x4 does not work, but 2x2 does, but there are some more bands that can be unlocked. I am having trouble making a simple guide. Every device has tuning data that is slightly different and some tuning has to be done for the lower frequencies because it was not done at the factory.

Make tilt work on T-Mobile 3G

Is there any possibility of making the tilt work on T-Mo 3G with some kind of hardware swap. Please don't flame me just want thought from someone with experience in the field. I started a topic on T-mobile coming out with a branded kaiser with front camera with the FCC filing a while ago http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=369356. Theres links to them testing it, and manuals (https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=791453&native_or_pdf=pdf).
So maybe with a hardware adjustment it could work, id be willing to spend under $75 if someone could get it done.
Well, basically you would have to do two things:
1. Change out the radio to one that supports UMTS 1700
2. Flash a ROM that allows you to see and utilize UMTS 1700
That being said, I'm not sure if this is a tear-phone-apart-and-swap-radio project or replace-the-whole-thing project...
Oh, and your link doesn't work.
Updated links
----------------------
How much would parts and labor cost for this to happen?
Here's what this antenna looks like if it helps doesn't look too complicated.
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=809977&native_or_pdf=pdf
As an engineer, I very much doubt that it would be possible to change the radio. You might have more luck looking for undocumented support for the 1700MHz spectrum.
The radio is going to be heavily integrated into the ROM, which you don't have access to the source code to. Even if you were by some miracle able to solder on a new antenna and various chips, you would have to rewrite a new Radio ROM from scratch, and make it 100% compatible with the real radio ROM to fool the main rom into using it.
It could just be as simple as a radio flash if there was a radio out there that supported it and the Emobile version is the same with just a different radio rom. I say this because back when I had Motorola's, some of the phones that had quadband variants could be converted to a quadband phone from triband through a series of firmware flashes enabling the fourth band.

True....but as you said, if the radio in our current phones support 1700 with a flash, then yes, it will be easy.
And I agree on the Motorolas...I've had a handful of them before I went with my Tilt. The V3xx was the famous triband but really quadband with firmware flashes phone.
A guy in boston is saying that his worked on T-Mo 3G for like 45 min but hes not sure if its a glitch. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2181372&postcount=19
So it is possible then right? If his is just a glitch then this would have to be replaced

The part you have pointed out is the antenna. You would have to replace the radio chipset which is soldered on the main circuit board of the phone. If you can solder that by hand, you are inhuman!

MEGA bump to get someone on to cracking this thing... it has been documented that the Tilt/Kaiser has been tested at 1700mhz band, so it may be possible to get it working through Firmware update. This would be great news for us United States T-Mobile users that want to use our Tilts/Kaisers with T-Mo's 3G

I really hope that a simple radio rom flash will enable this extra band. I know many out there do not believe that this can be done, but I will still keep my hopes up because something similar can be done with Motorola's back in the day.

All we need to do is just enable the 2100 band to work with t-mobile. Call a rep they'll all tell u and u can check online too the 3g works on 1700 and 2100(that we have)

I flashed EMobile's emonster rom to my kaiser, and took a ride around the bay area, no 3G... I also took just the EMobile radio, and flashed that on top of HTC's latest rom. No luck either. The band settings tab in the phone settings also didn't show any 1700 bands...
Looks like I am going to sell my kaiser100 and get the 140 when T-Mo decides to sell it...
theres got to be a way...nothing is impossible...with a will (and the majority of tmo kaiser users have) there IS a way

Well i have been browsing the q&A section and general since i got the phone in march everyday. So if you can point me in the right direction to the thread that answers this specific question. I have seen plenty of us att c6603 threads and and the new c6606 on tmobile threads and the people who WANT to get the c6603 model and use it on us carriers. I even followed the lte in canada thread to see what I could pull from there. So if you can point me in the right direction and not to some thread which has a speculative answer? Because there are a lot of people who dont have this model or who are not on the us carrier of tmobile who are forming opinions on here. I personally assumed that once the tmobile version c6606 dropped that I could flash the ftf basebands for that onto my c6603 and it would work
So if you can lead me the way i would greatly appreciate it
[edge network is killing me bro]
Here is the C6606 stock firmware - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2361750
You could try the same method of flashing just the baseband from it that the people in the thread regarding LTE in Canada have used and see if that works for you.
I don't have a C6606 or live in the US, but I thought at least having the firmware from the C6606 would be a good start

I can suggest asking someone here that has the phone to take a look at their preexisting settings for you, maybe the person that posted the firmware I linked you to.

In theory, the method should be the same for you, apart from the APN settings. It goes without saying that all this is at your own risk, of course.

Yes but you stated that you needed these settings for the C6603 in your first post, which has HSDPA basebands of 850 / 900 / 2100 and LTE bands of 800 / 850 / 900 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600 which means you don't have T-Mobile HSDPA or LTE so your not gonna need the fast.tmobile.com apn... You need the C6602 to get T-Mobile's 4G HSDPA speeds and you'll need their newly released C6606 to get their newly farmed LTE but it has a locked bootloader and an ugly 'T-Mobile' tattoo on the back.
Here, this will get your mms working. You want the MMSC & apn type from this pic to get your mms working.

Exclusive to tmobile means what to me as a c6603 user? Does that mean they block any other phone or sim that tries to use it? because I tried flashing the c6606 basebands and it would not recognize my sim
So still no LTE....so no one else has this problem?
T Mobile uses a different LTE band requiring different radio hardware....same as their 3G operates on the 2100/1700mhz frequency range and requires radio hardware of picking this 3G up...hence you only get EDGE
One of the reasons I ditched my T Mobile account for an AT & T account because you can at least use 3G with AT & T as it uses the 850Mhz frequency.
But unless you have the correct hardware you will not get 4G no matter what APN's or firmware you flash.
I do not live in the US but I travel there often (2-3 times a year) and I have the 6603 - before that a HTC One X and iPhone 5 - no LTE just 3G because of hardware

Thanks geekygrl. I am aware but I was under the impression from this forum that the c6603 and tmobiles c6606 have the same hardware? Is this true? or is it just unicorns and pixiedust?

[Q] Note 4 internet/call issues

Hi Guys,
I just adquire my Note 4 from a friend and i'm having lots of problems to conect to the network in my country, i live outside of USA (Dominican Republic), somethimes it makes and receive calls, somethimes i don't receive any calls but can make it but when i make it the other person can't listen to me (i've tried with diferent phone numbers) also the internet 4G/LTE is no consistent. In summary, i'm having lots of signal\internet issues with my Note 4.
My question is, is that a hardware issue or i need to try with other baseband or modem to fix this?
please give me some light as i'm losing my mind with.
thanks in advance...
Miggs
I would first create a new apn specific to your carrier...
Then i would check to see if in fact your running the latest modem for the device..
But start with the apn...

Thank you for your help @Flashvetrin i checked the APN and it is correct, my modem is also the latest available UVU1ANK4 (not 100% sure did not find any other on internet) for t-mobile stock rom, some say this could be internal hardware problems but i dont think so because the phone make some calls and internet works sometimes but is not consistant.
i made a hard reset and i worked for some minutes but lost signal and went back to this behaivor again.
really don't know what to do now..
thanks in advance.

Can you take the device in for a sim upgrade???? Does the device recieve stronger signal anywhere in your area???? Interesting how your saying that after a hard reset it helps..
Try using short cut master from the playstore use #2263 launch0 and run 4 thru 8 ....

It is most likely coverage problem. My understanding is that biggest cell provider in DR is company which uses cdma technology. Do a little research which gsm provider has better coverage in your area and if lte bands used are compatible with your note4.

I've done all of the steps you mention and nothing gets better, it just works when he wants (most of the time it donesnt). I will try installing a ROM just for testing purposes.
I changed my SIM card for the newest LTE capable one. @darekz im on Claro and they are GSM\LTE.
Thanks in advance,
Miggs
I did do quick search and appears that claro using lte band 4 which is supported by Tmobile note 4. Just to check can you disable lte in phone settings and see if daya transfer improves over 4g. With poor lte coverage phone will constantly fallback to 4g and keep looking for lte.

Hi @Flashvetrin,
The baseband is K4, i flashed the NJ and it keeps almost the same behaivor, i can say K4 is a bit better as at least i can make calls, no calls with NJ.
build.prop, i dont know how to edit it and i'm note certainly sure about it as it can brick my phone.
Let's assume it's a hardware issue, is the hardware in charge of control the siganl interchangable, can i buy it on internet, or is my phone destined to be a clip for papers??
BTW, i installed another ROM and it's the same, no way.
Thanks for all your help,
Miggs

Question what was the behavior of the phone like when it was in the us????
Fyi there are things that can be changed..
(ALOT) of things in the build prop..
your phone wont brick....
I promise..
But if your not comfortable i understand.
It may be that the modem hsic just isnt or doesnt respond on "this" paticular network..
The phone that you compared it to was it purchased in the us as well...
If its infact an International Version it may have some bearing.....
No its not a paper weight...but i am starting to run out of ideas/solutions...
Please be paitent.. im gonna consult some else as well..

The phone is the same, a TMO Note 4 bought in US and taken to DR, that's why i say this could be a hardware issue as my SIM worked very well on her phone.
I will try with other baseband and let you know.
Thanks.

AT&T Firmware On SM-N950F

Hello there, I have an international Galaxy Note 8 that I am currently using on AT&T here in the States. I have only been able to get H+ (3G) and using the NextGenPhone APN will not connect. I was told by AT&T that I need their firmware running on my device in order for it to work. This is a little frustrating, considering I bought this phone to avoid AT&T's firmware and locked bootloaders. Will installing this firmware lock my bootloader? I currently have it unlocked and rooted and do not want to brick it. If anyone has tried this let me know how it went and where you got the firmware from. Thanks!
The att firmwares are made specifically for snapdragon devices, so, an att firmware will not even install in your exynos F model, sorry man…
Which csc you have selected with your international N950F device
The US csc for AT&T was available on your firmware?

Since he is rooted can he just flash the at&t csc using this:

?

Thank you for your reply. I tried your suggestion with some "success". I installed the ATT CSC but I am still met with the same issue, except now it reports that I have 4G instead of H+ (although its the same speed as before). My preferred network type is UTMS/LTE which I believe is normal. I am currently using the ATT Phone APN because NextGenPhone will not work. Any suggestions?

Do you know the frequency bands that your network uses and does the note 8 support them?
Maybe try another usa carrier csc might have better luck.
I don't think you will get LTE speeds unless at&t provisions your imei number. Same as using an unlocked t mobile USA model on at&t. There is plenty of threads about no 4G or LTE signal on stock unlocked handsets on here. I don't believe your issue is unique to your device being an F model as opposed to U.

Mate, if you get 4G, you should be fine! 4G and LET means the same.
https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/4g-vs-lte/
LTE is actually the technology to realize the 4G standard.
So if your phone is showing 4G you should have your fast speed. But also H+ have a great speed.
If the speed isn't fast enough, maybe it's limited by your provider or location.

When I called AT&T I told them the IMEI number needs to be provisioned and they attempted to get me to install their firmware, which failed because my phone is rooted and blocks updates (among other reasons). Is there any other way I can get them to do it?

The AT&T firmware installation don't failed because your phone is rooted, but because it's a completely different firmware! The US models are devices with Qualcomm's Snapdragon SoC, while the international (F) version have the Samsung Exynos SoC.
So you tried to flash a wrong firmware version for your device.
Be happy installation failed and you don't bricked your device by flash wrong bootloader!
You wrote, you have 4G now? What you want more? With a rooted device you can change the showing icon like you want.
Here in Germany since i got note 8, for me it also shows 4G instead of LTE in statusbar. Before it always shows LTE (same SIM card, same provider)
(The screenshot is showing an entry from DeluxeRom v.7.3 custom Rom where you can select which icon you want to see)

Does your F model show 4G ? If so, as what the other person said is correct. The F models show 4G symbol instead of LTE.

It only shows 4G after flashing the AT&T CSC. Prior to that it showed H+. When I open Speedtest.net it shows my connection as being 3G in the app and my speeds are still extremely low. 3mbps download and 0.5kbps. My Note 4 on LTE would do about 30 up and down in this area. To use LTE I would have to use the ATT NextGenPhone APN which does not work for me. I have to use ATT Phone.

All I know is that at&t doesn't allow high speed connectivity for imei numbers not on their system. There have been many posts on here with people with non at&t devices having slow data speeds.

If your device is rooted and you flashed the csc selection changer you should be able to select "LTE only" into connection settings.
Select it and test your speed again.. maybe the signal strength it bad at your testing location

Question OP 10 Pro Chinese model on T-Mobile, your thought plz...

Good day. I am planning to get the OP 10 Pro Chinese model but would like to know how is the 5G connectivity on T-Mobile network? Also, will I'll be able to install google play store and other google apps? Should I wait for the global model here in the US?

It's only 1 week left until launch for the north American model, better to just buy that model (NE2215). April 14th release date.
The Chinese model doesn't fully support mobile network bands on T-Mobile according to "kimovil".

Cool. If everything works on the Chinese model on T-Mobile network, I don't see why it's relevant to wait for the global edition here in the US. Plus, the Chinese model is cheaper and more RAM choices.
I'm planning to root the Chinese model when I get my hands on it. Should I get the Chinese model now? I just need to confirm that everything works if I get the Chinese model since it's going to be my daily phone. Help me decide for the last time plz....

I have the Chinese model since January with T-Mobile, it's bad not having 100% use of your phone.. android auto does not work, notifications are a hit or miss, the messages was a pain in the @SS, if you send a message to someone that had an iPhone, it would ask a permission to send it.. I just switched it to the EU Oxygen OS and it's the best thing that happened to my phone.

Doesn't work for me. Even tried apps to force the b41 to connect and nothing. Chinese model also doesn't support long range lte band. I've been getting text and emails for the past few months from t-mobile saying my 9rt will be a brick in july when they kill off some bands. i believe the 9rt and chinese 10 pro use the same bands.

I have heard nothing of a requirement for extended range LTE, only for VoLTE, that's big news if T-Mobile is planning to boot every phone that doesn't support extended range LTE, that's a HUGE chunk of phones on their network!
This page seems to have copied the stock spec list for the NE2210 and it is clear that n41 and B41 are both supported.
