Standard Mi 8 MetroPCS network support? - Xiaomi Mi 8 Questions & Answers

I do not quite understand MetroPCS (and T-Mobile) bands because their 3G/4G LTE uses two different frequencies to function. In some instances, this either means NO LTE (only HSPA+), or in the case of my Mi A1, LTE is supported, but calls sometimes fail to come through because it seems it cannot find a 3G signal, not even a 2G signal, and I cannot use data while in a call.
I am choosing between the Mi Mix 2S and this one, but I would prefer the Mi 8. The information I have is that either should work perfectly with MetroPCS.
P.S. if it helps, I live in NYC.

My xoami mi 8 just came today. Metro and t mobile use the same one bands: 2,4,12,66 and 71 . The mi 8 supports those bands. phone works great so far lte everywhere I've been (live in metro Atlanta. work in and around downtown Atlanta). I only use non metro phones on metro and never have problems. Just always check for the lte bands on the phone

Also if you don't have 4g umts will kick in. I tried out the mi mix 2s before getting the mi 8 and the mi 8 is better to me. I also have a galaxy s9 and I personally feel it keeps up if not out performans it. Screen size is great. Runs fast as hell with alot of app open, UI you can customize. call quality pretty good too.

Sorry for my late reply. I read your message as soon as you sent it but haven't had the time to reply. I decided to take your word for it and pulled the trigger on the Mi 8! It works perfectly so far for me as well on MetroPCS here in NYC. I'm very happy with it so far, and the battery life has been amazing so far on my first run with this phone. You're also 100% right about how fast the phone operates. I've been dying to own a Snapdragon 845 smartphone for quite a while. Originally I planned on waiting on the OnePlus 6T, but I have used Xiaomi smartphones for the past few years and cannot live without the genuine MIUI experience. Thank you very much!

Galaxy Note 4 vs iPhone 6-->LTE Reliability/Speed

My experience with the iPhone 6 and Galaxy Note 4. I am aware iPhone 6 is equipped with cat4 LTE Modem and Galaxy Note 4 is equipped with cat6 LTE Modem. These tests were ran side by side and one by one to maximize the results. Both had stock OS as well.
I've used these two devices on following carriers: vodafone UK, T-Mobile Germany, SK Telecom, China Mobile and Telstra AUS.
Speedtest Results (Galaxy Note 4 in Mbps):
vodafone UK: 179.11 down and 33.23 up
T-Mobile Germany: 121 down and 14.39 up
SK Telecom: 287.49 down and 49.31 up
China Mobile: 11.59 down and 2.88 up
Telstra AUS: 144.82 down and 19.33 up
Speedtest Results (iPhone 6 in Mbps):
vodafone UK: 67.39 down and 4.59 up
T-Mobile Germany: 118.33 down and 11.49 up
SK Telecom: 147.10 down and 31.55 up
China Mobile: 1.58 down and 1.44 up
Telstra AUS: 88.92 down and 9.49 up
Signal strength (RSRP) through hidden menu (Galaxy Note 4/iPhone 6):
vodafone UK: -88/-102
T-Mobile Germany: -91/-98
SK Telecom: -71/-82
China Mobile: -105/-110
Telstra AUS: -98/-102
Carrier Aggregation (Galaxy Note 4/iPhone 6):
vodafone UK: Yes/No
T-Mobile Germany: No/No
SK Telecom: Yes/No
China Mobile: No/No
Telstra AUS: Yes/No
Galaxy Note 4 was clearly the winner. It received stronger, more reliable speeds and reception.
iPhone 6 lagged behind in all locations and tests that I've ran. It also did not support carrier aggregation which had a negative impact on the LTE data speed.
SK Telecom of South Korea had the best performance out of all the carriers.
I take it this must be the 910S model as it's the only cat6 note4 out there. My carrier network and area (or some of it) just upgraded to cat6 (been cat4 for a while at 150mb max) but all varients of note4 except the S only do cat4..id love to test it out as I've frequently tested close to max many times getting 125-140mb regularly.

On O2 Uk I get 5mbs download speed where I used to get 19 on my HTC One M8. Something is clearly wrong with note 4. Wifi is spotty too.
Three (uk) are still rolling out 4g around me. So far, in the areas where I have had a 4g signal, I have only managed to get 54mb/s (I thought that was fast) lol
I've got the n910f if that makes a difference.
Not rooted or anything yet either.
Sadly Note is lagging, bad word of choice, but it's lagging behind when it comes to speed. My note 4 is on lollipop but still have those small slowdowns I really hate. Waiting for next firmware. Even playing hobbit it's slower than MX4 and Nexus5

The OP strictly talks about LTE data speeds, not your phone's general stability.

This is a good specs site.. This is the T version but at the bottom u can click on practically every variant.. They all show 150mbps max dl (cat4) except S which is 300mbps..Sammy site said same thing.
I've seen a few sites that say all North American varients (Snapdragon of course) are all cat4..
These sites all wrong?

That is what I originally thought too but have found otherwise.. My network just upgraded to cat 6 in areas but says this phone doesn't support it.. That got me looking and all the sites like the ones I linked show cat 4..and friend in the US on Tmob (I believe) called too and said only cat 4 max 150..
Im confused because when I bought it I was sure it would work once I was on an upgraded LTE network..
Did u see my links a post back? Do u have any that prove it's cat6? Like I said even on Sammy site it shows 150 max (cat4)..

To clarify, I ran these tests on Galaxy Note 4 SM-N910U model, which is equipped with Intel XMM 7260 LTE radio.
SM-N910F, SM-N910S, SM-N910K, SM-N910L are all cat 6 variants, but are equipped with Qualcomm Gobi and Samsung 300 LTE radios.
Yeah ok makes sense.. Had to be some out there but it's a crazy mix.. There are varients that don't have the upgraded radios then.. North American mostly
Ok found some info saying almost all SD note4's should be Cat6..most Exynos too.. Confusing though as others say only 150mbps max. Maybe certain carriers haven't released their varients with the newer radios?
So what's best app or command to check and confirm my W8 variant is Cat6 and better yet what app is best to use to get live data of bands/frequencies of LTE I'm connected to so I can see if I'm on or using two at once.. Some areas around me have launched and would love to test..
The Cat6 here though is only up to 225 atm due to them only using 10 and 20 mhz blocks on its 2100 and 2600 bands and not 40mhz. But that will change later

Thanks bud and I'm not trying to debate or antagonize, I'm just damn confused as I keep finding so many conflicting sites.
Thanks anyways and I'll keep testing and researching my variant to see if it can run Cat6 (both frequencies simultaneously - I confirmed it has both bands that my carrier is now using for their Cat6 implementation)

Unlocked U.S Note 9 Slow Updates?

Hi everyone,
For anyone out there that won't be trading in a phone and paying full price, it looks like B&H has the best deal on the Note 9 that's compatible with T-Mobile U.S.A. They are throwing the new QI wireless charger duo, a dex dock and the AKG headphones (although via rebate )
My question: How's Samsung's software updates for their unlocked phones? I know they caught some heat in the past for doing quarterly security updates instead of monthly which they have now fixed but is that true for their major OS updates? I don't want to be stuck on 8.0 till this time next year when 9.0 is starting to roll out now..
Anything else I would be losing by going the unlocked route? I have TMobile here in the U.S and the specs sheet pretty much covers everything including bands 66 and 71.. I'm assuming wifi calling is a given although it doesn't say so..
No tax and the additional freebies have me lingering on the preorder click button.. What say you?
Avoid T-Mobile since it would come with a locked bootloader. I am still rocking a Note-4 on TMO since the bootloader was unlocked. It is probably better to get an international model of the phone.
I'm on the fence as the OP as well. Has band 71 been totally confirmed for the US unlocked version!?
It is my understanding that the international version will have full band support for the US-Based GSM carriers (AT&T and T-Mo) but not for CDMA (Verizon and Shint).
If I'm not mistaken, Carrier versions get the update from Samsung, after Samsung does their tweaks, and then the carrier puts their little changes, and then the update rolls out. Unlocked versions should get updates sooner since there's no carrier involved right?

According to BestBuy.com
LTE Band 1, LTE Band 12, LTE Band 13, LTE Band 17, LTE Band 18, LTE Band 19, LTE Band 2, LTE Band 20, LTE Band 25, LTE Band 26, LTE Band 28, LTE Band 29, LTE Band 3, LTE Band 30, LTE Band 38, LTE Band 39, LTE Band 4, LTE Band 40, LTE Band 41, LTE Band 5, LTE Band 7, LTE Band 8
As far as wifi calling it should work on a unlocked Note 9. I have the unlocked Note 8 and wifi calling works on tmobile.
I am not sure about the bands support as phone arena also says that it does t have B71 support.
But if the US unlocked S9 can be used as an example, it has b71 support. So I wouldn't see why Samsung would drop b71 support on the US unlocked Note 9.

You would think it works that way but no. All carriers are satisfied first before unlocked units. My unlocked note 8 always received updates well after carriers. I guess unlocked users represent a smaller percentage and thus lower priority.

PC Mag review has confirmed that tmobile wifi calling works on the unlocked Note 9 but not for any of the other carriers. Still don't know about band 71 coverage though b&h has it listed on their website.
FYI Oreo on tmobile note 8 was released April 1st while Oreo on unlocked version was released April 4th.

Does anyone know if an unlocked Sprint Note 9 is compatible with TMobiles band 71?
I bought on Ebay a note 9 that was listed as a factory US unlocked SM-N960u1. Based on the imei number, it turns out that it is a sprint carrier unlocked note 9 that someone flashed the U1 firmware onto it. I talked to Samsung support and tmobile tech support who do Not know if this phone will work with band 71.
Sorry if I'm asking in the wrong location.
Appreciate the input.
Yes it should be compatible I think. You can try dialing *#2263# then go to band selection then LTE then look for listed bands, it should say 71 in there.

Yes. All the US Note 9s are the same exact hardware. There's no difference at all between the carrier models or the U1 model. It will be 100% compatible and has band 71 support. If you want video calling and rcs texting, just flash the T-Mo firmware. WiFi calling and VoLTE both work on the U1 firmware on T-Mo.
I've had a T-Mobile branded Note 9, an actual factory unlocked U1, and most recently an ATT brandes Note 9 flashed with the U1 firmware on T-Mobile. No difference whatsoever in signal strength and speed.
Just put your TMB SIM card in it and enjoy!
You also have one distinct advantage: ONLY Sprint branded phones and the factory unlocked U1s work on Sprint. So when you sell that one, you can say it's truly unlocked for all carriers.
EDIT: Added a screen shot from the *#2263# menue on my ATT Note 9 running the U1 unlocked firmware. I circled all the LTE bands it supports. Again running on T-Mobile.
So great to hear that. Thanks so much for your thorough reply. Can I leave it as is or will I need to flash the sprint firmware back to use the warranty ever. The knox counter remains at 0×0.
Thank you

You can leave it as is. It's running official Samsung firmware.
I understand that the tmobile variant has a locked Bootloader as well.
My last note was the note 4 which I loved because I could carry spare batteries. Since that phone, I've been on the huawei mate 8,9 and 10. Great UI and 4000 mah batteries that I easily could get more than a days usage. Most recently, I sold my mate 10 and bought a Nova 3 because I wanted a better selfie cam than 8mp. The Nova has a 24mp and a 2mp selfie.
Compared to my new note, the selfies are appreciably sharper. I want to take advantage of band 71. My wife has a s9 plus and she gets double the download speeds I ever got with huawei. Guess I'm looking for the best of all worlds. I've missed the note. I'm glad samsung finally put in a big enough battery. Personally, I still think the user replaceable battery was always the best and distinguished android from Apple by having expandable memory too.
My main complaint with this note is that I am unable to tweak the settings for better battery.
I think I've tried everything even tweaked the developer settings. Maybe the s pen is a drain even when not in use.
Best regards and thanks again!

ALL the US models have locked bootloaders. If you want to unlock and root, you need an international model, but you'll lose band 71.
No the SPen won't drain your battery.
What kind of battery life are you getting?
Averaging 14 to 18 hours. I've put all but 2 apps to sleep and am allowing no more than 1 app to run in the background. I also go into device maintenance frequently and optimize everything. My Huawei Nova 3 with it's 3750 battery lasts at least 25% longer.
Am I missing anything?

Bands warning

Hi
This probably comes a bit late as most people on the forum already have a Note 9 but just in case this helps someone.
I have previously bought my S7, s8 and s9+ from Europe and imported them to my current home country for use here and another country in South America I regularly visit. So far no problems.
I had just made up my mind to buy the N960F/DS the same way. Pure chance led me to check the bands. I was very surprised to find that, even though 4G works fine on my S9+ here, the N960F does not have compatible 4G bands that would work here. Samsung appears to have changed the availability of bands between the S9+ G965F and the N960F. The only version that will work for 4G here is now the N9600. Lucky I found out just in time before ordering my Note 9.

It might help others if you listed the missing bands. Or linked to your source for that bands are supported.

Looks to me like the G965F and the N960F both support all the same bands.

https://www.phonemore.com/samsung-galaxy-note-9-sm-n960fds-128gb/specs/4161
On what conclusion do you base this theory on?
Is it because one shows 4G and one doesn't or one shows LTE and the other one doesn't?
I'd recommend comparing true band compatibility by using Samsung's own regional websites under corresponding spec sheets. I don't trust third party websites for accuracy on this matter. Example, got Samsung's website in Brazil and check the note 9 band specs and then go to Samsung's Singapore website and compare the note 9 band specs etc....

That website has been wrong for me in the past. Use Samsung's own websites to verify bands for each model .

Not 100% but think there's only 2... India, European, UK etc all have same model number then there's the Chinese version.... by the looks of ad and then not replying I'd assume it's the Chinese version.
so you think that 1 is ok? or skip it??
if it is chinese model any good or skip it?

I bought the Realme X2 Pro 256GB/12GB supposedly Global/EU version, live in Orange County, CA, and on Android 10 C24 update using the T-Mobile network. When i go to Settings->About Phone under 'Model' i see "RMX1931".
I just updated to C24 and same problems as posted here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/realme-x2-pro/help/how-to-to-android-9-colouros-6-android-t4071317
and my rant/venting here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/realme-x2-pro/help/downgrade-realme-ui-to-color-os-realme-t4080299
The thing with this phone is that nothing is clear on what is working or what should be working with T-Mobile network, in my area at least. I can tell you though that besides the bugs/issues on the links above, this also does not work with this phone in my area using T-Mobile:
-No VoLTE
-No Wifi Calling
-No 4g while on a call(could be related with no VoLTE due to the missing bands on the phone)
Also on the T-Mobile network, on my previous phone, HTC 10 unlocked global version, i had wifi calling and 4g when on a call working - and i find that ridiculous that on a 5+year old model phone these both things worked and on a "high spec" 2019 model phone like the Realme X2 Pro none of those things are working and yes i know the X2 pro is meant to be used in other parts of the world, like china and india but still, when you sell a "global" phone(not priced cheap @ $500 imho) it should have all those 'basic' functions, like wifi calling, at the minimum! i bought at my own risk i know, so im paying the price now:crying::crying:
if you are willing to switch providers like maybe Verizon or ATT maybe you can have better luck with this phone with all the "basic" functionalities.
i was about 75% sure of getting rid of this phone and now im like 99% sure of getting rid of it. You interested? lol
btw, i bought this exact one from this seller: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Realme-X2-...hash=item34211a23a8:m:mS2Nl-L-Htood4wYaECLYCw
dam ebay!!
ok they finaly said its india version is that any good or skip it?
oh crap just noticed same listing i was eyeballing no thanks im skipping then

i bought X2 pro phone about 1 month ago and if i was going to do this all over again i would i would go for the Xiaomi: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Xiaomi-Mi-...hash=item341aea54d9:m:mH_wyne-_SXAdmrXP7eck1g
before i bought anything it was between the X2 Pro and the Xiaomi, same price, but i went for the X2 Pro because of the faster snapdragon 855+ processor and more ram. I dont really care for the crazy 108MP camera(s). But if you do your research for the Xiaomi, i believe VoLTE, wifi calling, and 4g while on call, all work with the Xiaomi on the T-Mobile network.
Good luck buddy!
anyone who bought the 12 gig model that is the GOOD model for usa tmobile/att etc where did you get it? if you can link me to it thanks
anyone order this exact 1 from this seller? and if so what model is it? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Realme-X2-P...r=442520443345

If your not bothered about the camera which is the main selling point of the Xiaomi mi note 10 then the only decent point is the large battery... everything else is worse then the X2 Pro... Unfortunate that your having issues with networks as I have WiFi calling etc on my European version using ID sim which is a virtual network on three UK and working perfectly.
EDIT: Just read your rant and the other thread and can honestly say I have no issues with speaker being to loud during a call and zero issues with mic. I didn't have them on Color OS and I've been running the Realms UI c23 from the India site since 30th without the issues... installed c24 from UK site today and I've had nearly 3h calls today without any loud or mic issues.

LIke i said on my other rant, maybe i got a bad one from a bad batch:crying: which sucks because 30day policy expired from the ebay seller and i dont think i can return(ill double check anyways). And yes, the Xiaomi has larger battery also and yes i would of have ignored the slower porcessor etc. if it meant "normal" functionality on the phone with VoLTE, wifi calling, etc. all functioning - i would prefer a working phone than dumb issues and missing basic functionalities etc. MY2C i guess.
But like i said before, when i got the phone new with Color OS 6 Android 9, the earpiece/handset during voice calls volume was working "ok" at a tolerable level and i could be fine with the mic issue, having to enable speaker mode and then disable during call, i wouldnt have mind that at all. That is the reason why i would like to go back to Android 9 but i have no idea how - or im too dumb to do it ....still doing research of how i can go back.
ok got phone Fleabay SWORE it was GSM Model only but on side of box says GSM:850/900/1800 WCDMA1/2/3/4/5/6//8/19 LTE TDD BANDS 34/38/39/30/41 LTE FDD 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/18/19/20/26/28 model number rbs9x225in..... so what region etc is that?
how do i get fastboot installed and configured? i havent had to use that in 500 years
fastboot flashing unlock in fastboot that does nothing? i checked my devices is there
i got fastboot working see,s my device but when i put the code he says fastboot flashing unlock when i did that it seems fastboot doesnt know the command or something?

Question China variant missing B66 band on T-Mobile

Never purchased a non-US compatible device and had a question:
The China variant seems to have most T-Mobile bands (both do not have B71) as the global variant WITH THE EXCEPTION OF B66. Does anyone know whether this will be an issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
i get my china variant Mi 11 Ultra on Monday, im on T-mobile and i live in NYC. i can report back to you then.

Lucky you! Yes please let me know how the reception turns out. I don't really care about 5G since it's not that widespread, but wondering how 4G LTE will be like.
If you have any opinions on the China variant as you begin to use it, please post as well! Also considering it since there is a cheaper variant (8G+256GB).
Any updates how CN version working in NY with T-Mobile?
interesting to see speed test on 4G. Is actually supporting one 5G band.

when i ran speed test i get 10Mbps here in Queens at my house. but the real test for me will be at my job, since i dont get any WiFi there.
I also did a factory reset (a habit i always do) and playstore disappeared, i looked on youtube for easy video to re-install. This is my 1st Xiaomi phone, so im getting use to MIUI. but hardware, much better than my Note 20 Ultra. the display is better and the frame rate i see it faster on mi 11. I plan to flash global ROM, but stuck waiting 168 hours for unlock to go thru. this is only my 2nd day with the mi 11 and i like it already. going out later to take some pics.
Don't buy China version because it doesn't support well Carrier Aggregation combinations used by TMUS so you don't get good speed from network. Also it missing B71 and B66 bands - common in US networks. 5G only works with n41 SA when available theory.
Here is list of supported bands and Carrier Aggregation combinations: https://cacombos.com/device/M2102K1C

Disappointed to hear you are only getting 10Mbps in a city like Queens. Do update is on what your down speed is like at work!
Thank you and good luck with flashing to global!
Is there somewhere I can view a map of which T-Mobile bands are used throughout the US?

tested at work...70Mbps! so glad i have wifi at home
I've used Chinese version phones without B66 for years, with t-mobile / google fi. Never had any issue with it. My wife uses an iPhone US version, I have stronger signal than her sometimes.

Do you ever use the phones in rural/sparsely populated areas?

yes. the coverage in those areas are bad either with the US iphone or Chinese android phones with tmobile, imho. i only travelled to those places so i am not authoritive on this assessment.

Wow why the difference? What kind of speeds were you getting with other phones at home? Was it about the same?
My mi11 in China can work 280Mbps by 5G. Although the band is a little less, it is not affected in China
