Ad-free and malware-protection experience without hosts file.
With the hosts file, internet slow down due to cpu usage for resolve domains.
AdGuard DNS is the solution.

For report an ad or broken websites: https://agrd.io/report
Requirements:
- Magisk 17
- In this module AdGuard DNS uses port 5353, sometimes it can be blocked.
....something else?
BUGS (for now, some of these may have been fixed):
- It does not work with some ISPs
- It blocks internet access to public Wi-Fi hotspots
- Netflix app + Chromecast compatibility issue
- Some apps use DNS Geo-location, these may not work (like Dazn, etc.)
- You can't send MMS
- And many more...
To avoid these problems you can download DNS Changer by Blockada in Google Play store... Or if you don't care, you can use this module.
For Android Pie user: https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdGuardDNS/blob/master/README.md#dns-over-tls
NO WHITELIST FEATURE! DON'T ASK ME TO DO IT!!
General F.A.Q.
Q: Do I need third-party apps to make it work? A: No, just install and enjoy.
Q: What is AdGuard DNS? A: AdGuard DNS is a free Domain Name System resolution system. It is an alternative solution for ad blocking and privacy protection. It provides a necessary minimum of best protection against online ads, trackers, and phishing.
Q: How does AdGuard DNS work? A: When you use AdGuard DNS, every time a website or app sends an ad request, our server sends back a null response. AdGuard has a database of domain names that serve for ad purposes, and this database is regularly updated.
Do i need third part app to work?
I Installed on Magisk
It's still showing ads.
I've been using AdAway for awhile. Today I started getting ads, in the Google feed and Firefox. I checked the lists in AdAway and even added EasyLists. Also enabled IPv6. Couldn't figure out how the ads were coming through. I happened to see this module listed in Magisk and decided to give it a try. Works great. I still see the boxes where the ads would normally load but I would rather have the empty box than an ad.

No, there is not. The Ad-blocking works at DNS-level, It would be impossible.

This module just sets the AdGuardDNS servers on the device so paying for a license would do no good as that is for the mobile/desktop apps. I don't mind the empty boxes. Better than boxes filled with ads.
Had to re-do the module to get it to install but so far looks good.

Needs Reciever app?
Man I thought i was onto something with the whole URL for Flinging Command.
Apparently some have seen in the SDK that an example video using the big buck bunny video url could be casted. http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2332706&page=2
USER: vshah
the sample code, for example, simply passes this URL to chromecast to play "big buck bunny"
http://clips.vorwaerts-gmbh.de/VfE_html5.mp4
if smb shares are supported by chromecast, then i see no reason why it shouldn't work.

Also a great idea by user blackdogdeek
Forgive my possible ignorance, but couldn't you just run a web server on your smb box and give the URL of your local vid stash?
ie - pass http://192.168.1.10/public_html/vids/movie.mp4 to chromecast

So we need to figure out how to initiate the fling command? Is there a receiver app in the SDK kit or something?
I'm a total noob when it comes to this but this has my jimmies rustled and i'm excited about the possibilities.
I posted about this 2 days ago:

Google SDK
Whitelisting Chrome apps
To permit your Chrome sender application to use the SDK, you must register the application's domain in the Google Cast extension for Chrome.
Be sure you are running Chrome version 28 or later.
If you haven't restarted Chrome in a while you may be running an older version; restarting will update Chrome automatically.
In the Chrome omnibox, enter chrome://extensions, and check the Developer mode checkbox to enable developer mode.
Install the Chrome extension for Google Cast.
On the Cast icon in Chrome's upper right corner, click four (4) times.
In the Cast extension, scroll to the Developer options.
In the Cast SDK additional domains field, click Add and enter the domain of your application, for example, "www.mydomain.com."
Code your application's HTML tag as follows:
<html data-cast-api-enabled=”true”>

I couldnt get the above to work but I found it in the options by removing the display:none from <section ng-show="doubleClicks > 1" style="">
So someone who gets "White Listed" could try sending a URL to the ChromeCast?
Edit: So someone can start making a webpage that uses this correctly and just add that domain to the Chromecast extensions whitelist?
see https://developers.google.com/cast/chrome_sender

Adding the domain is just a way of telling your extension that the domain is serving a chromecast receiver. They haven't opened the floodgates for developers so they are keep everything controlled, hence the whitelist process. You do "send" a URL to the chromecast but it's really just for the chrome extension to know that a websocket can be opened for the receiver site and the client (the chrome extension).
Someone else found the same thing and posted it on Reddit. Here's the link
Also note that the user Ranek520 said: "Unfortunately, none of those advanced options are actually hooked up. The JavaScript to store or load the values is removed for the release version of the extension. That's why the values are all blank.
Source: I wrote the max frame rate option."
So currently these options do nothing.

Still, they are for a reason. I guess they are waiting for a future update to activate them, or may be some dormant hardware like LTE in Nexus 4.
Anyway, it opens the door to many possibilities...

Has anyone come across a ROM that's dedicated to HotSpoting?
My thoughts are this:
1) Is there anything for this phone like a SafeStrap where you can change roms just by rebooting?
2) Could a rom be written to disable pretty much everything except hotspot (cannot receive text messages or phone calls, no apks are trying to use the internet in the background, etc...)?
I don't know how to make roms, so I am not going to say it sounds easy, but it does sound much simpler than a lot of the full OS roms I see.
Thanks guys!
I mean, there're 3G router for 30 dollars that can do that, and you want to use a fully featured phone that costs 150 USD$ o more for that?
Mmmmm.....

yeah but there's already ROMs that have the ability to do Wifi hotspot. so why wouldnt you just flash one of those and call it a day.
not like you're really going to see any better battery life by only having it as a hotspot. that **** kills the battery

My phone already does hotspot. I just changed permissions and have been good to go.
I can't get internet out at my house, so I use my phone's hotspot (and an antenna and amplifier I put together) so I can still game. When I get a phone call, or a picture message, it will lag like crazy, or dump my game.
This is why I would like a very simple ROM that would not allow for anything but a hotspot, or even just the ability to turn everything else off. I also noticed that if I can keep my unused RAM above 1gb, it hotspot's better.

I have looked into 3G routers, but then I'd have to pay for another phone line, and I'm not looking to do that. Then there's companies that sell internet service that is unlimited and 3G, but they are about a $500 start up fee, and about $125 a month after that. That is CRAZY!
Unless I've got it wrong, and I can somehow clone my SIM Card for the 3G router? I'm definitely no 3G router expert. Thoughts?
In that case, you can install Android Firewall and block everything except tethering and there's an app for blocking all calls. I think (my opinion) that's easier than a full hotspot rom having to switch back and forth. You can also make an script for enabling both or use tasker.

Yup, that's what I got. Also I got another apk that blocks startup apks (BootManager), and with both of them I got better signal.
Thanks for the help.
I have also noticed that my battery life has increased a lot. I was 40% more efficient since doing this yesterday, and about 40% more efficient this morning too. I'm assuming it's because of the BootManager.
Does anyone know the programs to allow through the firewall in order to get the hotspot to work?
I tried allowing everything (by clicking the check boxes) and that didn't work unless I clicked the box that says 'all apps'. I'm assuming what I need is not populating and so the only was to get it is to click 'all apps' which defeats the purpose. :-/
And does anyone know if the hotspot is a stand alone or if it uses other applications in order to work?
Thanks again!
If you go to settings, there's an option "Tethering support". You have to enable that in order to tether to works.
Just a thing: If you modify your traffic or DNS or whatever with another program (example, AdFree that blocks ads) the adds will be blocked also to anyone that connects to the hotspot.

I didn't find a 'settings' on it or a 'Tethering Support'. I only see when hitting menu: Firewall Disabled/Enabled, Log Disabled/Enabled, Save Rules, Exit, Help, and More.
Then under 'More', I see: Show Log, Show Rules, Clear Log, Set Password, Set Custom Script.
There is also the Mode in the top left that lets me do White/Black list.
I would love to go into 'Tethering Support if you can guide me there!
I don't know if we are seeing the same app but this one has that option

Droidwall hasn't been updated in ages and doesn't have toggles for tethering.
I use AFWall+, which built off the concept of Droidwall. It has an entry you can whitelist for Tether & DNS.

Hello! My moto g3 isn't actually rooted, but I want to remove ads, which app would you suggest? I know adblock plus and adguard, which is the best?
Firefox with uBlock Origin is smoother and faster than AdBlock Plus. Firefox can be download from the Play Store, and uBlock Origin from within Firefox's Add-ons settings.
AdBlock Plus also has their own browser in the Play Store.

I haven't tried AdGuard for a long time. Back with they had to do a bunch of stuff just to get it going. I see now it's improved in a lot of ways. I'm going to give it a try. I'll report back later.
OK. I've been using my phone the same way as normal for the past four hours, and I must say Adguard is the way to go. With screen on time at 3 and a half hours Adguard is showing it's been used for ten minutes. I see no extra use on battery, and web browsing has been faster. I'm using Chrome, and its so nice not having ads. I enabled it to block ads in apps too, but I don't really use many apps that have ads. I use paid versions, but it's nice to seeds it can do that too without root. Overall I'm impressed, and even bought the lifetime license. Thanks for starting this thread. Otherwise I would not have tried it again. Super easy to set up, and once it's running there is no maintenance as it's all automatic.

No they don't. Since altering the host file requires a rooted phone.
Non-root adblockers work via a proxy/vpn connection that filters adds.

Yeah AdAway now requires root. I use it on my CM 12.1 phone. Adguard doesn't require root, and does the same thing. I use both, and see no difference in performance. Both great apps. When I used a stock phone before I would root just for AdAway, but now with Adguard, I don't have to root, so I keep all stock, and am able to get OTAs too. That was the main downfall of rooting for me. I only wanted to block ads, so I rooted, but lost the ability of OTAs. Now I have the best of both worlds.

It uses very little battery if enable full time. I've had it on since I installed the app, and it maybe uses a bit more battery. If before I could get 6 and a half hours SOT, and the battery was at 10%, now I get 6 hours and 25 min of SOT at 10%. Not a huge change, and if I check battery stats at 10% left Adguard is towards the bottom at like 3% use.

Hi Marcel,

- set VPN/Sentry as Alway-on VPN
- Upon reboot, VPN/Sentry is not auto connected.
- has to touch the VPN/Sentry icon in the Status bar to manually connect.

Start on boot works properly, but I can reproduce your problem if I set VPN/Sentry as always on VPN like you did. I will look into this tomorrow.
Thanks for reporting this.
Edit: correction: if I wait long enough, it works. Android starts VPN/Sentry soon after boot, but it takes some time until Android reports "boot completed" to VPN/Sentry.
Can you please check what happens if you wait a little longer?

Yes, you are correct. If I wait long enough, VPN/Sentry will auto connect.
Thanks

I have just released beta version 0.18 which will start the VPN earlier when VPN/Sentry has been set to always-on VPN.
It may take a few hours until this release is available in the Play store.
Edit: the release type has been changed from alpha to beta, since recent releases seems to be pretty stable.

VPN/Sentry was designed for minimal battery usage and maximum speed. The server bandwidth, currently 100 Mbit/sec, is shared though. See the terms of service (menu, help, about) for more information.
This looks like a great app! I do wish you would reconsider your position on releasing the source code, both for the Android VPN client and the server. If I could, I would love to run my own, private server instance, even if this means sacrificing some anonymity. I also have to imagine that if this app takes off (which I hope it does), server bandwidth costs would become prohibitively expensive for you to maintain yourself, which means you will start having to charge users for bandwidth. I also think it doesn't make sense to always route everything through France when the majority of the time I'm at home, on my own local WiFi network.

I have no plans to open source VPN/Sentry at this moment. One of the reasons is that I don't want to support running own serves, since this will inevitably result in all kind of questions I don't want / can't put time into at this moment.
Related FAQ: https://www.vpnsentry.net/faq/#FAQ8
This thread is for a reason in the XDA paid apps main forum. Data usage is free at this moment and will stay free up to a limit (to be determined), but will / need to be paid later on.
If you would run your own server, your internet traffic has to pass through your local Wi-Fi network as well, so this is not really an argument. I will add a server in Canada soon, also to have a proper backup, if you are worried about latency.
If you are concerned about your privacy, this is what I wrote in the NetGuard forum:
"I can imagine people asking themselves if I am trustworthy and they should. Therefore a little about my motives: developing VPN/Sentry is mainly a technical challenge to me (although the app looks simple, it is in fact a lot more complex than NetGuard under the hood). VPN/Sentry is something I want to use myself to reduce battery usage while still having full filtering capabilities. VPN/Sentry already has profiles and will have wildcard and global filtering (including ad blocking) in the near future.
I am just a independent developer and not a big company. IMHO you should be more worried about big companies anyway. Run the Android Booking.com app with NetGuard with filtering enabled or with VPN/Sentry enabled and take a look at what is being accessed for an example.
I have no interest in your data and not even the time to analyze your data. I might take a look at your data in the testing phase, but this will be just to debug problems.
Anyway, you have to make up your own mind about this, but I hope this helps."

Only one app can use the Android VPN service at the same time, so this is not surprising.
VPN/Sentry will have it's own ad blocker in the near future.
The server data (rules/conditions) will be backed up daily from now.

I am not sure what you mean, so can you explain in more detail what you want?
What do you mean by "trigger" ?

Without root permissions it is not possible to monitor the state (active or not) of other apps, so what you want is not possible. Note that VPN/Sentry was designed to not require root permissions.
I don't see the added value either, since the VPN is there to secure all connections, not only those of Facebook. If you really want, you can enable the VPN and exclude all apps except Facebook from using the VPN.
I'm very excited to see you working on another privacy app, thankyou M. - I will be happy to assist by testing as far as my time allows.
Is there any public repository of issues where to check before asking stupid questions or reporting duplicate 'bugs' ?
At my first trials, I noticed odd app behaviour regarding defaults of blocking/permitting. Are you aware of any issues in that area?

Thanks for helping.
Just comment here if you have any question or remark. Everything is still deliberately low profile.
What odd app behavior did you notice?

I was actually hoping you might ask your boyfriend if his sister is single...
Looks like you're making a killing off BTC highs.

I'd try it but it's just too inconvenient...I can't transfer my passwords, my bookmarks, sync my history across devices etc etc...Edge at least has the option to import from Chrome and the Microsoft authenticator imports passwords from Chrome...this way I don't miss out on the auto-fill service. I'd always like to go stock but with so many inconveniences built into Samsung's stock apps, you have to look for alternatives...I was so looking forward to using Samsung pass but since there's no option to import from google passwords, I dropped it...

I use bitwarden for passwords as it works across all platforms and generates safer passwords (my PlayStation account got hacked a few months back), you can use it to replace Samsung pass and import passwords from most browsers - I would recommend looking at it

I have been checking out Bitwarden but somehow the app doesn't work well with Samsung internet..I have tried all known settings...Is it working seamlessly for you? If so, how?

How is it not working? I occasionally have to search for a password in the app, but once I fill and save it usually auto populates.
Yes, I tried to but the app doesn't auto populate in Samsung's internet..Is there any specific setting in Bitwarden?
Today's battery life.
I always have my doubts on these SoT, 9 hours of on time doing what and on what settings?
I don't think my battery is that bad, exynos wqhd and adaptive refresh rate I reckon lowering to 60fps could eek out another hour or so
I used to get around 7 hours prior to the march update, getting 9+ now. And that's with ONLY the standard Adaptive Battery setting enabled. I've disabled "Put apps to sleep" setting and all that junk. No other battery or power saving measures enabled.
WQHD + Adaptive refresh rate. BT, NFCand wi-fi always on. Mobile network on 4G auto.
