That's something I've been wondering about quite a bit myself to be honest. I find it a little depressing when phones such as the 3 yr old Moto e surnia has Oreo. I think the biggest holdup is the difference in the partition layout, but I could be wrong.

Funny you ask that found my Nexus 7 2013 Had a 8 .0 ROM out for it.

[Q] Is the Z1s worth getting without being able to root?

I'm in the market for a new phone and the only thing keeping me on the fence with the Z1s is the lack of root and despite the bounty on it, progress looks to be slowing. Can anyone make an argument for this phone on stock over an equivalently spec'd phone that can be rooted?

Do you care about it being waterproof? Do you care about a horrible screen? (Yes, the screen is terrible). Sony's software is good enough to use without any rooting, but what other phones were you looking at?
Well, I'm moving up from a Galaxy Nexus who's screen has horrible burnin so I guess calling the Z1s screen terrible is a relative statement. I'm mainly looking to buy through tmobile. Their phone offering is kind of weak, atleast until they stock the S5 but I'm sort of weary of AMOLED screens after the galaxy nexus. The only other phone I was seriously considering was the 2013 HTC One which i know has root but obviously its a bit dated by comparison. Could you recommend any other competitor? Maybe even through AT&T?
Come on buddy. Let's positive thinking here. It's not able yet, beside think about quad core, 2 GB ram, 16 GB internal memory, plus 20 mp camera. You'll be proud of it.

To each his own, but personally i wouldn't ever be interested in a phone where i can't unlock the bootloader. So a phone without root and without bootloader unlocking? No way for me. I love my Z1 though, but have the unlocked international version

If you really don't care about the screen, it's a good phone. I forgot to mention that the tmobile version of this phone is HUGE. It's bigger than the Z1. What about the Nexus 5? The HTC one 2013 is still a really great phone. They ported Sense 6 to it now with everything working.
The camera on this phone is about equal to the HTC one's camera. More MP though.

The phone has a huge list of Pros and while no root is the only con I can give it, it's a pretty big one. I have a broken galaxy nexus and disposable income burning a hol through my pocket. I'm going to have a new phone by the end of the day. I'm just trying to weigh which hurts less either a bit of an outdated phone with root or the Z1s without root.

Root will eventually come in August when jcase said he would release it. Another question is do you care about slow updates? The Z1 just got KK, but the tmobile version will likely have to wait a few more months. HTC seems to be doing well updating their phones. I would get the HTC One if I were you. Maybe even the new HTC one that's being release tomorrow.

The slow updates was a bit of a bummer but I could live with it. I asked whether Tmobile would offer the HTC one tomorrow but the rep sounded doubtful. I could simply go with the HTC One and then jump to the 2014 model after a few months when tmobile has them stocked. The other reason I'm considering the HTC one is for it's build quality. I'd be taking a bit of a hit on horsepower though but still an absolute upgrade from the galaxy nexus.
You may have convinced me to take the HTC one actually lol.

Yeah no one knows about that. There are some rumors that Verizon will have it for 2 weeks before everyone else, but some rumors say all carriers get it tomorrow. The 2013 one is still pretty fast though.
@aooga
The htc one camera is definitively one of the worst camera ever seen in the last years
Check gsmarena comparisons if you don't trust me
And this only would made me skip this phone
Anyway, I would skip the S5 due to its crappy ui
And the z1s for his closeness
Couldn't you buy an unlocked phone maybe? I know US mentality is quite different.. but cmon is there really this saving?

Hmm. I didn't see that when I had it. The camera was really good both in low light and outside. The Z1 camera takes a lot of fiddling to get shots, but when you get it right, they're pretty good.
Oooohhh, the camera..... yea that just bummed me out of the HTC One. Ugh. I guess it's back to square one. I gave the nexus 5 a thought and the only real reason I dismissed it was because my brother has it.

Just to be clear: you can root your device with locked bootloader. You just can't install custom roms. It's just a bit of work to get a rooted Kitkat.
I love the device. Sonys firmware is really good I didn't have any reason to use custom roms yet. It's closer to pure Android than the other 3 brands.
The camera is good (with a bit practice). I've bought the device mainly because of the huge battery

The problem is exactly there. When I open photos load they are good. Then I say: "oh, let's take a look at those people up there" or "let's check that bird on the seaside "
And I zoom in.. and you realize photos suck (a ****ty galaxy ace can even beat the one! holy jesus..)
anyway, I wouldn't boycott the ****ing close contract system if I were you... but if you aren't so prudish, well, z1s would be a good deal
Otherwise, go unlocked nexus 5/xperia z/xperia z1

No you can't on the Z1s. That's why there's a $600+ bounty.

If you live in the US, buying phones from the carrier is actual beneficial. Tmobile has something called JUMP that lets you get a phone every 6 months if you buy the phone from them. And you pay nothing up front.

Touchwiz has it's pluses and minuses, and yeah it's ugly, I much prefer the nexus software, I'm currently using an N5, but I will also make pretty good use of the s pen, I definitely miss it at times.... plus, the possibility of a zerolemon extended battery.
I'm now quite liking the idea of owning both of these devices, as that way, i'll know for sure which one I want to keep

The Nexus 6 is just a big phone. The Note series are a true phablet. You can live with it for ebooks. I'm a heavy user. I currently charge my Nexus 5 2-3x a day.

Why no kernels & ROMs ?

Hey there, comming from the Nexus 4 I would rather get the Moto X 2014 instead of the Nexus 6 (altough I will miss franco.kernel) but I see nearly no support for new kernel or ROMs ?
Why ?
Will there be more in near future? E.g. ParanoidAndroid ?
Thanks
Use of a custom ROM would render the Moto features useless. I came from the Nexus 4 , and the Moto X is definitely not the phone to get if you like custom ROMs or a flashaholic.
Most people run stock + root which provides a very pleasant experience.

Sent from my mini tablet XT1095
I'm coming from other brands Samsung, HTC, One Plus One and don't see much in the way of custom development compared to the devices I've owned previously. As others have stated this is probably not the phone for flasher's. Great phone but, I not if your into flashing a new ROM every other day.
Sent from my victara using Tapatalk
Who needs a custom ROM when the stock software is already perfect? The original Moto X convinced me to stop flashing ROMs, and there's actually a freedom that comes with it- I am no longer stuck in the constant flashing/updating lifestyle, and it's wonderful.
The stock ROM is perfect, but sometimes it can get glitchy.
But, kernels! I miss them a lot! I hope in the near future, someone makes some popular kernel for itl.
No need for a custom ROM. Only reason I'm looking forward to root on VZW is so I can use Xposed
Because this phone is ****. Swap it for a Nexus 6 like i did. Much better device. You will get used to the size

Try to use your n6 while walking and holding with the other hand a bag.
If u can your hand is more than a foot long. Now go with your fist finger to the top of the screen and in summer put it into you pants and sit down. Come on dude tell me how people can get used to that size.
Can't really understand why the nexus 6 is that motorola and not mine (moto x)
That's a tablet
You got to remember too, that on top of losing the features that make the moto X "the moto X", this phone is locked down tight unless you have the pure edition. So where's the motivation to develop when only a fraction of the moto X²'s could take advantage of it.

Nexus 6 or Moto X Pure?

What are your opinions regarding the Nexus 6 vs the Moto X Pure? Which do you think will be future proof? Does anyone know if either of these can do simultaneous talk and web browsing on Verizon?
I know nexus 6 on Verizon cannot surf web over lte and talk at the same time. Semi-obviously you can still talk and browse over WiFi.
Before Nexus 6, I tried moto x 2013 dev edition... And to be honest it paled in comparison to the community support of nexus 6. Not sure if it is the same on the newer pure models.... But on the dev edition you could not downgrade the got or boot portions, and very few unofficial updates were provided by community. People largely just ran stock with xposed, afraid to fastboot stuff for fear of bricks, and with little to no ROMs because no one wanted to loose the stock framework, and xposed does everything.
Was not a very good environment for tinkering and learning tbh. Nexus has many more possibilities.
MotoX wins for stock features though, nexus ambient display pales in comparison to the 2013 moto x.

Nexus 6 can do simultaneous voice and data on Verizon if have VOLTE enabled. All new Motos on Verizon are the same.
VOLTE appears to lead to a lot of dropped calls if you live in or travel to areas with poor 4G support from what I've read. Is that correct? That is why I never enabled in when I had my S6. Does Google still release updates for the older devices such as the Nexus 5? Just wondering how Google is to older Nexus devices.

All Nexus phones down to Nexus 4 (2012) received updates to LMY48I (5.1.1). Nexus 5 got update to MPA44I (6.0). So, yes Google takes care of older devices.
So anybody have anymore thoughts on moving from a Nexus 6 to the new Motorola Moto X Pure 2015? I'm still thinking about it but I'm wondering which is better for customization with ROMs/rooting. If anyone has any thoughts on anything between the two phones, please share. Thanks guys.
Not sure how it is now.... But 2013 moto x dev edition you couldn't ever downgrade, meaning you couldn't ever try out an upgrade with out being stuck.
This, combined with everyone not wanting to loose stock features meant no one did anything but run xposed. I think its going to be hard to beat nexus if your main thing is customization.
I'll be selling my Nexus 6 and getting the new moto pure. Its a no brainer for me.

I don't care much for modding/customization. Just root is fine with me so I can use adaway and my android tools.
SD card slot is a huge plus with me since I have so many photos/videos on my phone, I take an extreme amount of photos and I like having a lot of music for the gym.
I haven't tested it myself, but I do expect a better camera.
I myself prefer the natural colors of a LCD display than amoled.
Front facing speakers are pretty much the same which is a plus and the screen size isn't much different.
I love my nexus 6 don't get me wrong. But the moto pure better suits my needs than this phone. Processing power won't be much different or noticeable and I'm cool with that.

Yes, just wondering if custom ROMs will be available for the new moto x. I figured the bootloader would be unlocked. But just wondering if it's worth giving up my nexus 6 for. Thanks.
I was in the same situation a week ago Pure X vs N6, the new nexus arent all that appealing to me the Huawei is god ugly the N5X looks nice but with midrange specs (will pick one up if its on carrier subsidy though for the GF), if you dont need the SD Card, dont take an extreme amount of Pics, and don't mind AMOLED then the N6 is a very good buy right now, they're dropping in price you can get a 64 gb for 339 now, and 32gb under 300... The pure x starts at 399 for a 16gb model... any customizations you add will add to the cost...the newer SoC isnt worth the extra 200 or so if you dont need the SD Card and Camera.. The Pure X will have decent amount of dev since it can be unlocked (btw unlocking the BL on the Pure X voids warranty since its technically not a Dev edition) but nothing ever beats a Nexus in regards to developemt/custom roms etc.. I chose to save 200 dollars and came back to the Nexus 6.

Should I upgrade from Nexus 6?

Which phone should one upgrade to from Nexus 6? I'm absolutely in love with this phone since the day I bought it. The gorgeous display and front firing speakers are really lit. I love the multimedia experience this beast provides and that too without even a little lag. I'm currently running Pure Nexus Rom 7.1.2 with it's own custom kernel. Now the thing is that I'm also thinking of upgrading. I have been considering One Plus 3T and LG V20 as my viable options but I'm really confused. Should I upgrade or not? If yes, then to which device, and why? My budget is around $300-350 and I usually go for slightly used phones. Also of important notice is the fact that Android Oreo has been released and it is pretty uncertain that whether Nexus 6 will see any development in this regard.
All major ROMs will support the N6. Also there is at least one out there already on Oreo.
You won't find anything similar to a N6 as a phone in the market. Maybe you can get a first gen pixel XL for that price of a good deal pops up but even then I wouldn't exchange the N6 for a pixel.
This has been discussed here before, you are not the first, sorry for the let down.

If yes, then to which device, and why? My budget is around $300-350 and I usually go for slightly used phones. Also of important notice is the fact that Android Oreo has been released and it is pretty uncertain that whether Nexus 6 will see any development in this regard.
