Treble Note 9 - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Just a quick question. I can't seem to get GSI's to boot on my note 9. Had no problems running any pie based GSI on my s9 plus. Is there a specific vendor I need to use on the note 9 for treble?
Any help would be appreciated

Yeah that's what I've got same as on the s9. Trying to run pixel experience p but I get stuck at Sammy bootloop. Wasn't sure if it could be a vendor issue but as far as I remember vendor didn't matter on the s9.

Got it working in the end. Not sure what was going on. Appreciate the help

Heyy,
I've tried flashing the same Android P GSI. I also get a bootloop on reboot, can you please share how you fixed it.

Does anyone know which treble roms are stable?
Wish RRemix worked but it has a strange low brightness bug.

What I understood so far

did you find anything that works?
I tried Lineage, RRemix and OmniRom. all were working fine but all had the same brightness bug, stock camera also flickers & green screens when taking video, I dont remember on which rom.
I also tried pixel experience, the brightness was stuck on high, better than nothing, so if you want to use it you can give it a shot.
From @Dil3mm4 on his GSI rom built
The problems you will face with Descendant are the same that you may face on any other ROM based over Phh work.
So, don't blame me, blame your OEM about their poor Treble implementation

From @phhusson comment on note 9 brightness bug issue
Thanks for the report. Nice to have AOSP directly working on that
Brightness should be fixed in next release. I might forget to integrate it, please complain if i do.

if you are not a noob like me, you might find the files to flash on his github, since it looks like fixed, just waiting on his next rom release for these roms..
Reporting Bugs to @phhusson will help, probably least we can do, he mentioned creating Issue here
I will also do myself after testing more.
thing is the more people use it and report bugs, I believe it'll be a smoother experience for people who flash GSI roms later on the note9, and a great thanks to @phhusson, redoing samsungs lousy work. he deserves a huge thanks from the community.

Actually today I tried one more ROM, it from the same dev phhusson, here is the link
not only it is Android 9, it is stable enough to be used as a daily driver, I moved to it, Didnt want to post until I was sure.
So everything works, wifi, BT, hotspot, Sim, SD, Brightness Control, Mic, The Spen works as a mouse, HDMI, Fingerprints ..etc
what I found is buggy:
- the camera app(green flicker): you can use a third party camera app
- when you open the camera in Messaging to attach something.
One drawback to consider is Android P doesnt support Xposed yet. back to waiting for xposed support! =(
in fact I might keep using this, until Lineage OS 15.1 GSI gets fixed.

I have not. I've tried all the roms you've tried with the same results. I don't really have much time to tinker with roms now a days due to work but maybe some time next week I'll start a bounty to spark things up. The hardware on the Note 9 is just begging to be tampered with lol and it being the first Note with Treble Support really is "The Next Big Thing" :victory:

Best Mi Mix ROM Currently Available? (Advice)

Greetings Forums Members,
I thought I'd make a post here and get your opinions about what ROM to use. - I'm currently running Resurrection Remix from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi...esurrection-remix-04-09-2017-t3587049/page420
So far everything seems to be running really well on this ROM, but before this Rom I was running Stock Rom with Marshmallow, then updated to nougat MIUI 9 or something like that and I really hated it... So I wiped, re-flashed the original Marshmallow Rom using Mi Tool. I then decided to install TWRP and Root my device and keep it on stock MM. It was really good and treated me well for the longest time. Eventually, I got bored of it and decided to try out some custom Roms.
I wanted to ask you all which Rom is currently the best Rom to use for the Mi Mix, would really appreciate some advice here. I'm mainly looking for something with good Battery Life and Fast/Smooth Rom.
- Thanks

Thank you very much for your prompt and detailed response.
I'm currently using Resurrection Remix (ROM) - What are your thoughts on that? I personally find it to be really good because of the many feature it has included in the (ROM) - For example; you can really customize the (ROM) however you see fit. I find that to be the most appealing thing about the (ROM).
I'll be sure to give some of the other (ROMS) a try before settling on this one. I have yet to transfer all my dad over anyways since I've only been testing it so far. I'd like to make sure that there aren't many flaws before I settle.

Speaker switching in phone call and proximity sensor both work better in AICP, probably not a deal breaker, weekly updates and soon Oreo which there are a couple already.

I'll be sure to give it a try and see how it is. I decided to settle with RR now but I should definitely try out other (ROMS) before completely settling with RR since its the first custom (ROM) I've tried. I must say though that RR is very stable and has no flaws. Battery life is also very good.

RR hasn't been updated in months and likely won't be. AICP is the closest in terms of functionality (lots of config options etc) and is still updated weekly. Also, Oreo ROMs are starting to land (finally) so you might want to try those. I just built AICP for Oreo yesterday and I'm running it now. No major issues so far.

Awesome. Thanks for your input.
I've tried several ROMs that you've all recommended except for Viper. So far in my opinion I'd have to say RR has been the best in terms of speed, reliability and battery life. However, I'd like to give Viper a try as well just to see how it is in comparison to RR.
What version is it currently and what are your thoughts on Viper ROM ?

ViperOS is dead. Hasn't been updated in months and likely never will be. Rumours of an Oreo update hang on an article/video in Brazilian (where the team lead is/was based) showing it running on some device.
If you want to stick with Nougat for now, go AICP (more configuration options) or Lineage (closer to stock AOSP). Nougat ROMs are the only ones with custom kernels as yet too.
None of the Oreo ROMs are without issue for now, although they are minor for the most part. Another 1-2 should be along soon to add to Pixel Experience/Cardinal/RR/AICP.
I'm using @gavin19 's unofficial RR Oreo ROM. Love it. There are some minor issues but they shouldn't deprive you from trying it out. I strongly recommend it

Ya I need to try Crdroid, as I am on AICP and i havent really had any issues with that rom it works great and I can customize it like I want.
I am very excited i saw that ViperOs has figured out the Oreo 8.1 and has released a few roms, im hopeful someone will find a way to get that working for the Mi Mix!!!!
I think the best rom ever made for xiaomi mi mix is the Xiaomi.eu MIUI8 Stable v8.5.4.0
Reasons:
~ Unlike all custom roms, the miui uses the whole screen and has real rounded corners and not software made ones which makes the screen look better!
~ The MIUI 8 for MI MIX includes a gesture to hide the navigation bar and have a full screen in any app that you want, you can easly control it when ever you want, best rom for full screen exprience when ever you want! also when you do swipe to hide the nav bar the apps use the whole screen and there are no black bars! none of the custom roms have that!
~ version 8.5.4.0 has no bugs in it and has the best battery life you will ever see on the MIX
~ all Xiaomi.eu Pros and features!
~ Proximity sensor works perfectly and loud in this miui version, you cant find any custom rom that has that working perfectly these days
~ Camera is very good on the official MIUI version!
~ all the MIUI pros and features
~ NO HEAT of the phone, something that happens in a lot of custom roms I used
~ Please note that you can use MIUI9 from Xiaomi.eu if you want, but you will lose the stablity and swipe to hide the nav bar amd the phone heats a lot (but you get android 7, and all the new features) not recomended on the MIX
I have used tons of custom roms on my phone: LineageOS, RR, AICP, AOSP. AIOSP, DIRTY UNICORNS, PIXEL EXPERIENCE. none of the are as stable as that rom and I always go back to that rom.
Have a great day!

Yeah, Viper is most definitely a good Rom to use. I've used it on many other devices before and it has always performed rather well. It's a grea Rom overall and the customization is what really caught my attention. So I vote Yes, viper is indeed a good Rom to use on the Mi Mix and just about every other phone that supports it. AiCP is also a very good Rom on the Mi Mix.

I don't know man... I've never found the battery life to be good on stock ROM. I completely understand what you're saying though. However, if I'm being perfectly honest here, I wouldn't go back to using stock. Don't get me wrong it's very well-built and smooth but the battery life has always been horrible for me not sure why...

Backup & restore? Whatsapp chats and media files can be backed up to your Google drive and there are other options available for backup as well.
Same thing can be done for messages if you use the Google messenger app for texting and if not, you can still backup your messages and contacts very easily by using this 3rd party app to do so... Which uses Google drive. Also this app backs up call logs, contacts and SMS messages. App name: SMS BACKUP & RESTORE.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore
As far as apps and settings go you can always just use your Google account to backup all apps/files/data if you have the option turned on in settings of course.
General SD files like media files (pics, vids, etc.) can be backed up manually using your computer and internal storage or by uploading them to the cloud... which is for free.
How to revert back to stock? There are many guides available right here on the forums, if you just take a closer look you'll see exactly what I'm talking about.

Solution there is none since all the roms have bugs
Music stutter on standby, Bluetooth for calling or flash light or camera issues on some Roms. I have flashed alot of Roms already and no update to any of the Roms since it's been out. So I'm running a Rom right now that has issues and that music on standby stutters but thankfully some one showed me how to fix Bluetooth and the distorted music but still it stutters on standby which no one as of yet got it fixed . I have also pm dev's about the Roms and some are working on it on the next release and some haven't pm me back to let me know if there gonna update there Roms. Waiting patiently:silly:

None I would say ..they all got problems like I said so if you want you can use AICP Rom or lineage 15.1 but they have Bluetooth issues that's about it ..calling by Bluetooth won't work if you don't mind that . Phusson , pixel , bootleggers, RR Remix all got issues there is a site called GitHub with more Roms on there that you can also use GSI Roms but still with the same issues with Bluetooth .
i don't use bluetooth, i rarely use for send media but nowadays everyone has apps for that and a lot faster...
i tried with aosp extended pie and bootloop
now im testing RR oreo, seems smooth
the pixel experience goes too laggy
EDIT: RR Oreo, it's hard to configure fingerprint, and when it's done, doesn't unlock
EDIT 2: Fingerprint is working, but as you said, audio stutters while playing, so i'm back to the boring Lenovo stock rom

Why is Mi 9 Support from Devs is very poor?

The phone been released for 2 months now and yet not even an official TWRP recovery. not a single custom rom too.
i've been looking at Mi 8 forums and it has much better support. at least they have pixel experience rom
do you think it's still early for custom roms to be released or this device really has poor support?
Give it some time. Mi 8 and Mix 3 also took a while before the first ROM came.

i am sorry i didn't mean to be rude. i am just asking cause i've been waiting so long for a pixel rom and i was kinda concerned. the mi 9 would shine with it.
It took almost 7 months for custom roms to be usable on OnePlus 6
Just chill
I think sm8150 source code just got released not even a week ago, now developers get their first real look and can start working on builds. Really tho, unless the phone you are looking at already has strong developer support don't assume one without it will get it.

I think that depends on your individual set up. I use TMobile and have 2 sims, 1 for work and one for personal, granted I've only tried floko but I can't use them both with LTE selected, only manage to get edge working. When switching to LTE, I get constant disconnects every few seconds. Sms only seems to work properly with GSM as well. Might be a TMobile US issue, dual SIM issue or dual SIM on same network. Not real sure.
The Mi9 is out for months. Normal whene coming custom roms this comes in the first month. I think we will not see any custom rom now but Miui is also good with custom launcher. I missing nothing.
The device doesn't have "really poor support", the interest and capable people are and will be there. The problem is just the drop of sources. This was to be expected when you have one of the first devices with a new SD SoC. Threads like this really add to the increasing stupidness on XDA.
Sources are out for weeks.

Thanks for clarifying this for all of us "not so much into all technical details" people. I can understand your frustration, but I think for most people eagerly waiting for something else then MIUI, (who are not willing or knowing where to start with GSI Roms) its good to have one of these threads out there (maybe even pinned on top).
As you are stating it's only a matter of time, and that is good to know for all of us. It would also be great to have some DEVs that are planning on building for the MI 9 in such a thread to even built more confidence.
Just a word from another Dutchmen. Have a good weekend y'all! And try (just as I am about to) not to check XDA MI 9 forum every 6 hours every day. Just wait some weeks. Things are probably about to become very Pixely soon.
I've already dumped an obscene amount of time into this device, we have only had caf source for a couple days. It's a brand new soc no one is building working roms for it yet on any device. System as root has caused a lot of issues as well. Up to this point my work has been focused on the kernel and recovery and now I have lineage building with the new hals and the kernel updated to use them and ramoops working so I can actually debug init. It's not as easy as we make it look I'm already a couple hundred hours in and I work for free

Yeah it's good enough for now for my purposes but needs improvement. The big question is how do we make it compatible across different dtbos

Can't you include a dtbo in the rom zip?
Can i ask you if i can use your kernel in my TWRP?

You can use my kernel of course, pstore works with it so it's actually possible to debug init with some effort pressing both volume buttons and ai button sends a soft reset to recovery signal which is the only way to keep the ramoops info in memory. The problem is if you flash a dtbo then the boot.img may be incompatible. Recovery boot and dtbo all have to be matching unless there's a way to make recovery work off the existing kernel in /boot
I cant understand the Problem here. Just Look at phhusson the god of devs for GSIs. The Day He posted on xda that his New Main device is the mi9 was the Day my next device was also the mi9 (just arrived today). His aosp gsi is working on mi9 for weeks with just some realy small Bugs and i think it wont last long until He has fixed all Bugs. And from that Day on we will have every custom Rom thats available as a gsi with their next Update.

I dont like gsi. For flashing need a PC. Gsi is for me not a custom rom. I need a custom rom what i can flash with twrp, without pc.

Revolution OS vs Xiaomi.eu - which one would you recommend?

I've heard good/bad things about both of them. I've used xiaomi.eu on my former RN5pro and was very happy however if the experience is better with revolution OS I would give it a try (regarding battery/performance/bugs etc.)
Thanks guys! Have a great day :highfive:
I am also interested in this topic. I used Xiaomi.eu on my MI MIX3 and now I have to switch to MI9 and I am not sure, whether to use Xiaomi.eu or Revolution OS.
I did not test Xiaomi.EU, but from what I read RevOS is the same with more debloat and better battery life. The negative aspect is you get less frequent updates than with Xiaomi.EU, so it could be that with Xiaomi.EU you get new features and bug fixes more quickly, but then again there are only very few little bugs on RevOS so I think it's not much of a problem tbh.
I'm currently on RevolutionOS with Magisk and PocoLauncher and I'm really happy with it, but of course when the first stable AOSP based Roms with working camera will come out, I'll switch to that very quick haha

Great! Honestly I've never updated my phone anyway (since I've debloatet/modded it completely and didn't want to do the hustle again). If it offers the same/more features like xiaomi.eu + no frequent updates (since never thouch a running system) I think I'm giving it a go (after the 15 days wait period
Thanks again for your great reply! :victory::good:
In my opinion RevolutionOS battery life is better than EU . Idle time last night using RevolutionOS was about 3% in 8 hours while with EU rom was 10-13%.
RevOs for sure. I have tried Flokorom (GSI), Xiaomi.eu, and RevOs and I keep coming back to Rev. I get the best battery life by far with it, especially stand by time.

Did you, or anyone try the XASP Patch on top of RevOS ? it seems really interesting and i'm curious of the results it's giving

Actually, yes. I forgot to mention these results are with the XASP Patch. I am not sure how much that patch contributes to battery, but the combination of RevOs and the XASP are the best things to flash on the Mi 9 right now. I used GSI roms and will I like the minimal OS it just felt a big buggy and not able to fully utilize the hardware yet. Don't use any extra mods/apps like L speed mod or Greenify, I havent found them to be useful (on MIUI at least) and can got better battery without.

Yeah apparently battery and overall performance is much better with it. Did you encounter any bugs ?

I just installed the patch on top of cleanly installed RevOS. Shouldn't Magisk be there by default with XASP ? was it when you installed it ? Because now i'm not sure if it's correctly installed or not. Thanks :good:

Yes it should be there. I would recommend wiping data, factory reset, then install RevOs immediately followed by XASP patch.

That's what I did, but I think i'll try again. You can confirm it's the aromaless-universal version that we need to flash for our device, right ? In other words : this one (sorry, just want to be sure I'm using the right file, and maybe it can help others who'll see this in the future)
I use xiaomi.eu because it updates more often(weekly). I always remove any additional app I don't use from system when those are not impact to my daily use.
Haven't tried ros of mi9, but was using ros in the past. Don't feel that different to eu

Battery life on ROS wasn't much better on other Xiaomi phones in my experience. But on my Mi 9 I had far better standby time on ROS compared to Xiaomi.eu and Global EEA.
Now on another thread I just saw this rom called "mi-globe" : https://mi-globe.com/rom-builder/
You can basically pre-customize things like if magisk is preinstalled etc before downloading the rom. How is that one compared to RevOS and Xiaomi.eu ?
But from what I saw it's not much different, and I still think battery life will be better on RevOS.
One more question (since so many of them exist already): which type of TWRP did you use for flashing Revolution OS? Thanks!

I think the fiirst time I flashed it, it was with an old version of randomblame's one. But now I saw in the thread that there are problems flashing with the new one.
On the chinese TWRP it doesn't work for me.
Second time I flashed it with an older version of mauronofrio's TWRP (3.3.1-4 because there was a bug with the new version too), but now the bug is fixed on his version and siankatabg's version.
So I recommend you to use the latest versions of either mauronofrio or siankatabg's twrp, since they both support decryption now too. :good:
On the latest update of revolution os, I noticed my battery and network speed icon is white and can't be seen properly as compared to time and network bar which is showing with black color. How do I solve this?
Dead topic?
Any noticed issue with fingerprint unlock?

This question has no sense.
Nobody know what rom is the best for you. There are several roms for dipper and all are good. Try yourself and stay with the best for you.

Personally I like Xiaomi.EU the best, it is always the most up to date, uses the latest source code and there are no issues with anything, battery life is outstanding. Absolutely there are many great roms, but for me is the most consistently stable.
If you try it, use the built in kernel, and it works fine with the latest magisk Canary.

If you need MIUI than xiaomi.eu is best option, if you need AOSP with extra gimmicks than you can consider HavocOS, if you need pure Pixel experience than PixelRom or Pixel Experience is your best bet. But there are several roms out there you can check but this is my own opinion and you asked for it

I had a fingerprint issue with xiaomi eu. Where as soon as an app was launched it would detect ghost touches. Had to move over to lineage OS. Don't know if it was just me or it affected others too.

I have never had that issue. most people that had that issue was when Android 10 first came out. Try it again sometime. Just be sure to start clean with a full wipe.

Tried clean flash, yet no luck. Strange thing is that this issue only occurs with some apps, while others work just fine. All other roms (lineage, havoc and pe) work without this issue. Real shame as I prefer miui.

Without a doubt, one of those custom roms custom roms has corrupted one of your partitions .
You need to use a fast-food ROM and restore your phone, Use Mi Flash make sure the bootloader box is not checked or use Adb.
Note: A recovery ROM will not fix your issue it has to be a fastboot "images" ROM. Images will be in the name of the file.
Afterwards you can flash this ROM and no longer have those issues.
