Some apps keep getting killed (or restarted) in the background - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Op3T, stock. Android 8.0.0/Oxygen OS 5.0.6
I have a couple of apps that I need to be running all the time. Namely an app from my Insurance co that monitors driving and a Cisco Jabber app (chat). What keeps happening, is that the apps keep getting killed or restarted when they are in the background. Happens anywhere between 20 and 40 (or sometimes more) minutes.
Advanced optimization is off and both apps are set to "don't optimize" in battery options. Other things run in the background just fine - Gmail, WhatsApp, Messenger, Outlook, etc. all get notifications.
Is there another setting, besides optimization, that controls this?

On OxygenOS you can try the padlock icon on recent apps menu

Thanks. I thought that icon was to lock the screen to specific app. Will try and see what happens.

That's the one thing i miss from OOS (Nougat). That padlock really kept things in Recents, and probably memory too. I've not found it useful at all on Oreo custom ROMs. It doesn't seem to do anything at all!

Yeah, me too, it is most probably not implemented. I tried several things to make some apps stay in memory, but unfortunately I can't get it to work. On OOS I could lock i.e. Dialer in memory and repoen it 2 days later without reloading. No custom ROM can do this.

It seems that it doesn't want to work on OOS Oreo, too. I try to keep 7-10 apps always alive in background and some of them stay in memory, but these most important (Dialer, Contacts) won't. I don't know what happens, but I'm really considering downgrading to Nougat. Why do we have 6 GB RAM if we can't even properly utilize it?

Widgets don't update regularly on Nova Launcher

I'm using Nova Launcher with One More Clock as my Clock\Weather widget. I've noticed that the widget does not update the time regularly - i.e. it'll stop updating after some time and it seems to be fairly random. Once it stops, I have to refresh the widget in order for it to update again. I've tried a couple of other widgets and the behaviour is the same, so I'm pretty sure it's not the widget. I've also gone and ensured it is a protected app, but still the non-refresh behaviour continues.
Anyone have any suggestions or ideas? I don't see it with the stock widget on EMUI...
That happens with emui launcher too. All widgets which are not stock stop updating after a certain amount of time.
Works fine for me. Make sure the launcher and the apps are "protected" in the battery settings. If you want regular android behavior just hit protect all in that menu. This allows apps to keep running and update while the screen is off.
The battery saving options are turned on by default with this phone. Under settings/apps/advanced you can also allow apps to ignore battery optimizations.
If you are rooted you can also just freeze the phone manager and powergenie all together to get stuff to update etc (that's what I did)

I've done everything you mention except rooting the phone. I want a phone that works without rooting, so I guess the P9 isn't really suitable for me. Too bad, as the hardware and general design of the phone is really good, but EMUI really lets it down. Additionally, I'm not happy with the software update strategy for it either. I'm on build 134 for the P9(EVA-L09) and I've seen builds 136 & 152 in the wild for my device variant and geography, but there seems to be no update for my phone. And I have the green garbled images for a lot of the photos that I take, for which I've been waiting on a fix.

I had this issue on FutureRom which i guess waa based on l09.. reverted back to my L19 and the issues don't exist.. might be a buggy PhoneManager is to blame..
But why if you don't mind my asking? I've never used non rooted or non jailbroken phones. You get some nice additional features for free. Every company had phones with broken updates or other issues, if you wanna take things into your own hands and not be dependent on them, you know what to do
Wow that became quite the speech. Sorry

There is an easy fix for that mrsim. Go into main phone Settings (not Nova), hit Advanced at bottom of screen, choose Default app settings, choose Launcher, choose Nova Launcher.

It's been working for 24 hours now updating every hour. Protected under battery settings + ignore battery optimizations under "Apps" wasn't enough, but when I also changed CPU from Smart to Performance it seems to be working. I also re-added the widget on the homescreen afterwards to make sure settings worked.
what should I do on kitkat?

MIUI is just so... broken.

I guess this post is more to vent than anything else, but I can't believe how horrible MIUI (both 8.5 and 9) are when it comes to certain things. Basically, my biggest issues are as follows:
1. It's a huge pain to connect a Gear S3. I need to use an older version of Samsung S plugin, as the newest update crashes all the time. I need to disable MIUI optimizations in developer settings just to get it to pair, etc.
2. Gmail notifications! All I get is a '1 new message' then I have to swipe down with two fingers in order to see who the email is from, or what it's about. I'd use a third party email client, but notifications don't work very reliably with any of them that I've tried. Just a mess.
3. LINE. Here in Asia, Japan especially, everyone uses LINE to message each other, somewhat like I imagine people in Europe must use Whatsapp. I have to install an old version of LINE, or else with the latest version, you just get a blank notification in MIUI 8.5, and a blank notification with no sound or vibration in MIUI 9. Again, a huge mess.
I can get around these issues by using RR or Mokee, but things like bluetooth audio (in RR's case) and SafetyNet issues (in Mokee's case) exist, and it's not possible to use Netflix or my bank's apps with any AOSP-based ROM I've tried. Seriously, what a mess. It wasn't a cheap device. I hope they get their act together and release something that works soon, but something tells me that won't happen, and I'll need to wait for some third party AOSP-based rom to come along and save the day. But for now, it just can't be my daily driver.
I've been using MIUI since version 5, and there are things on MIUI that just don't work. The way notifications are viewed is a real pain. Just this last year or so, they finally implemented swipe away notifications on the lock screen. That just shows you how behind they are with simple tasks.

Well i have to admit, i'm not a big fan of Miui either... what f***s me up the most is the huge load of bloatware in almost any corner of it.
Notifications are another issues. I used to have the mate 8 with Emui, so i'm spoiled, because it had more detailed notifications.

Don't you have the issue of a bottom strip of the screen is unusable with Material Notification Shade? I like this app very much and it somewhat fixes the MIUI notifications issue but this problem is keeping me away from using it on a daily basis. Note that I chose to hide the nav bar on my Mi Mix 2 (using Edge Gestures instead).

Yeah, if you you use MNS, you cannot hide the Nav bar, else the bottom screen does not respond to taps. That is why I said it is a kludgy fix.
Latest EU rom 7.10.26 has introduced improvements to notifications. Gmail now shows subject and sender, and two finger swipe down shows content.

Android Pie problem on my note9

Hello guys. I just intalled official pie update that came yesterday on my phone via OTA.
However I forgot to uninstall goodlock 2018 (im from EU and therefore its not officialy available) I had navstar (I added different buttons) and task changer turned on.
After installing Pie, these features are no longer available on my phone (in good lock app they appear blocked and I cant update them).
BUT since they were not turned off, now im stuck with them and I cant turn it off (the buttons from navstar are still there even after uninstal). I tried uninstalling but they still apear.
The result is that its now crashing with Pie ONE UI and experience home keeps crashing. I have temporarily added different launcher and its works, but if I go back to home experience, it starts lagging and crashing again.
What can I do? Can I officialy revert back to oreo, remove goodlock and then install pie again? Or is there other way to do it?
I have once heard that you must never uninstall goodlock features without turning them off first because they cause problems afterwards and it seems this is the case here.
Would appreciate any help here, the phone with default home experience launcher is useless because of crashing.
you could try a factory reset....

I had good lock too with nearly all mods being used and switched on, after update, other than my phone looking like crap, it's not caused any actual issues like you describe.
I don't use navstar though and I use ruthless launcher so maybe that's why.
Have you uninstalled each individual module? Rather than just the good lock app itself?
If so your only options are either wait for good lock to be updated, or a factory reset, I say a reset is always best after a major version update anyway, although I can't be arsed doing that myself yet
Well it seems that deleting Home Experience data fixed the issue. Thanks for the replies though.
On side note I realy dislike new recent apps. Task changer in good lock was miles miles better. If you watched something in youtube and went into recent apps it kept playing in background, here it leaves any app and scrolling isnt nearly as smooth. Hopefuly they add it back for pie because right now I sort of regret upgrading.
After my update on AT&T yesterday, I have persistent handles on left and right as well as the edge handle that is usable in the upper left. Anyone know how to get rid of these? I tried turning off edge panels and they still show. Also I have tried the transparency trick, no good there either. Is this a known "upgrade" or a known issue? Thanks in advance.
Disable One Hand Operation + for those handles
Do any of you know how to get multi window to work? It seems to be gone.

Well...it's a launcher, called ruthless haha. Just Google it and you'll find the XDA page, it's a branch off from the original rootless launcher, basically it's a pixel launcher but with lots of extra settings.
I am on the us carrier AT&T. I am using the snapdragon model. I took the OTA yesterday and I left goodlock 2018 installed and all the addons enabled.
I am not getting any of the issues you described. The good lock app just shows all the mods as "disconnected". One hand operation and edge lighting are still working.

Recent Apps reloading while switching all the time!

I recently bought the Honor 10 Lite and everything, from its looks to the performance has impressed me. However, I noticed a very frustrating issue with the "recent apps" function. Every time I try to switch to another app from the list, it reloads all over again instead of opening it in the way it was left.
I did my research and found that tons of other users using EMUI 9.0 or above are facing this and it is happening due to Memory Management. I found and tried all the alternative solutions like lowering the screen resolution, changing the "App Launch" settings to Manual in the battery options, disabling the apps from the "Battery Optimization" settings from the Special Access menu etc. but none of it works. Some have also mentioned to Disable or Uninstall the stock launcher to get back to the Oreo style Recent App card list as a solution. But I am scared to do that, as it can affect the future updates for sure.
It seems like our phone's forum hasn't been quite active so far. Its obvious as its a new device and people are yet to find and talk about issues here. Anyway, there is surely a memory leak which is causing all this. The remaining memory is always below 1 gb which is unusual in a phone with 4 gb of RAM. And it is due to this, the apps are being reloaded in the Recent Apps list to free up more RAM! I really hope Honor will look into this and find a solution in the upcoming update!
Please share your opinion or help out if you are facing the same too. Thanks!

I have an Indian version of Honor 10 Lite. And I am using a different launcher already. So you are saying, I can disable or uninstall the stock launcher and the updates wont be affected? You sure?
I wrote about this to Honor India's official page in Facebook before few minutes. And their reply was quite typical. They wanted me to turn off the android system and transition animations to free up the ram and stuffs. I clearly told them that this was a memory management issue as others described it. But they gave me this irrelevant reply!
I just bought this phone. I mean its just been 2 days. I really dont wish to regret my decision now. The recent apps keeps reloading every time I switch them. Its ridiculous!

Yeah, thats what I said too. I am using another launcher apart from the stock "Huawei Home". I have not disabled or uninstalled the stock launcher yet. Shall I do that? That is what i am asking!
A lot of people have said that uninstalling the stock launcher will free up a lot of RAM and also enable the Oreo styled recent apps card list which will solve this app reloading issue!
I just contacted the Huawei customer care and a lady advised me to record the whole issue and send the video to their service email address. I have shared this EMUI 9.0 issue faced by others as a feedback to them too. Hope they will fix this in the upcoming update!

Hey,
I can confirm this. I've got a model having 3 gb ram. I am using Microsoft Launcher and deactivated everything related to battery to test it out.
1. Closed all my apps via recent apps
2. Then I opened a folder in ES Explorer and went back to homescreen.
3. I went into gallery and watched a video for 60 seconds, back to homescreen.
4. I went into Facebook and read an article for 60 seconds.
5. Going back to Es Explorer (No matter via Homescreen or recent tabs) makes it reload completely.
This definitely is not related to not having enough RAM.
I also can't deactivate my Huawei home, it is greyed out. Right now i am seriously starting to hate that phone.
Alright I got it working more or less by uninstalling Huawei home via adb. it's not perfect (3-4 keep open mostly), but with the switch to card style in recent apps it finally feels not as sluggish as before anymore.

Remove battery saving mode or some apps automatically optimized by phone manager or other solution is to keep that app in app assistant or game mode. UI is made for battery optimization and ram management otherwise you have got stock android
I have this problem too! It's so annoying. The phone is perfect besidd this problem

Pie RAM management issue

So I recently updated my Note 9 to Pie (May update), honestly I am satisfied with the update, phone feels smooth, lots of customizations with good lock, battery life is about the same as in Oreo.
The only problem that's bothering me is RAM management, apps don't stay open in background as they used to on Oreo even if I always have 2GB of free RAM at least. I have disabled all sorts of power saving features, tried a magisk module for better RAM management but it's still bad.
Is there any solution for better RAM management? Root or non-root?
Thanks.

since updating from v8 to v9 is not a proper clean start. u might want to contemplate wiping data and cache in recovery mode and start fresh from v9 instead .
shouldn't be different but you might also consider flashing latest firmware again ontop( just dont forget to wipe data first then flash.)
its always best to start fresh than to use a phone that go updated and still has all the clutter from previous version.

I started fresh with Pie, had everything wiped and started from 0. I noticed that some other users on reddit had the same issue, but haven't came across a solution yet.

how many apps in the background and how long does it take for it to reload.

I have the Exynos variant N960F, I'm on Pie May update and I am rooted with Magisk.
I don't have many apps in the background as I use Greenify to hibernate apps that I don't want to be running in background, as I said I usually have around 2GB of free RAM most of the time.
Now when I was on Oreo, I used to have for instance PS App open in background (meaning I exit with the back button not home button) and a few hours laters or even after opening lots of apps later, when I go back to that app, it doesn't have to reload. Now this is not the case with Pie, if I do the same, I would have to reload it, it's not that it takes time to reload but it's just annoying to have lots of free RAM yet you have to reload apps every hour or so.

Yes I do, and none of the apps that I want to be running in background are Greenified of course. In fact I have the same apps + settings that I used to have on Oreo as I restored them fully after rooting, the only thing that's different is the updated OS.

Sure, I'll give it a go and see what happens. Thanks.
I have the same problem too, recent apps are closed by itself no matter what battery optimization you do for the apps that you don't want to close.
I just noticed every time it happens it just keeps the last 5 apps used opened and close the old ones.
You can also try to go to device care and then battery then on the upper right hand side the three dots then settings, there turn off put unused apps to sleep. Maybe this can help you.
That dont work mate ,there is no fix trust me.pie closes your recent apps list over night regardless of what setting you use.ive given up trying to keep my favourite apps in the recent apps menu.i just hope Samsung fixes it .but nobody other than me and a few others really want it fixed.most people dont care that all there apps get closed over night apart from 3 or 4 that stay.its terrible
