China Rom to Global Rom - Xiaomi Mi 8 Questions & Answers

I am currently running MIUI 10.0.5.0 on my chinese MI8, I can unlock bootloader soon. My question is, can I simply flash latest Global stable 10.0.2.0 via fastboot, or will Anti-Rollback-Protection brick my device, because its an lower version than the current system?

No problem, Anti rollback protection is not active yet, you can flash Global Stable 10.0.2.0 via fastboot (make sure you choose clean all DO NOT choose clean all and lock, otherwise your device will brick).

All right, thank you!
I have already bricked my Mi 8 with the clean all and lock option

This topics reflects quite good my question.
I need a new phone and it will be a Mi 8 Pro which I probably will order during the weekend.
But before I do that I want to clarify a pretty important question:
If I buy a Mi 8 Pro China version will I then be able to install the global ROM so that I at least have the english language and the usual Play Store?
As far as I know the only thing I need to unlock the phone and that will take about 14 days, correct?

Correct. When flashing global do not select to lock the phone.
Your unlock time can differ, but it's just to wait it out.

Don't I have to worry about this: https://www.xiaomitoday.com/block-global-rom-miui-chinese-market/
Isn't this in effect yet?
AFAIK there is no difference in hardware between the CN and the global version, correct?

no way to relock bootloader in chinese device with global rom?

there is no chance to get a workaround to relock the bootloader in a chinese device running global rom?
Probably not.... Maybe someone make a hack... but I had Yotaphone and there was option to install RU (global) rom - problem was only with no supporting bands and hacked baseband to partially fix it. But here is the problem... damn bootloader - maybe some one will be able to hack and replace vitaminised bootloader with official ?
Development is still weak, we do not have kernel source code, which is a bit difficult but it should appear in the future.
well someone has found a workaround for the Mi Mix 2S?

This is not workaround for the question of the treatd!
I also bought chnina version with global rom and unlocked bootloader
Misled by the seller showing large photo with official global rom, but in description with small lethers:
OS ------------ MIUI, Unlocked Bootloader, Official Global ROM, China Version, Support OTA Update.
(Inquiry is necessary if want to reflash firmware)
I`m still waiting delivery, but after I red what I bought I start looking for solution for relock bootloader with Global Rom. So far, no one manage to make it. As @gugugrp said, we have to wait for solution in future (how long, no one knows).
I have one question too, is it posible OTA Update of the global rom already instaled without locking bootloader?
Hi, why do you want to relock BL with global rom?
I have a CN version with unlocked BL and global rom, but it seems useless to me to lock it, or not?

Some apps don`t work at all or don`t work properly or need third party apps to work. Also, if you use the phone as work one, you would prefer OTA update This is my persional opinion of course. If you are about to use custom roms and to play with the phone, it is beter to leave it unlocked.
The problem is not the unlocked bootloader, but the fact that the MiUI 9 stable play store is not sertificated for this deviece... . You also have OTA with the official global and unlocked bootloader.

Google pay does not work with unlocked bootloader for sure (as far as I know). I red some threads for worckaround with third party apps, but....at your own risk. I`m not a dev, just wanted simple phone with OTA update and decently security. If the problem is only in MIUI 9 and when MIUI 10 Global Official comes out fixes this, I`ll be ok, but anyway...would like to know I can lock bootloader with global rom
That would be my exact question in 12 days. Let me know if you know
Same situation for me, using the Chinese Rom instead which allows to lock the bootloader. I will move to the global one when (or if) this could be done...

I doubt xiaomi will ever rollback on the policy, however if the certification on google play is what u are concerned about, installing an older version of magisk and using the universal magisk patcher can mask the unlocked bootloader

As I said I am using the chinese ROM to avoid having the bootloader unlocked. Therefore I had to install the google play myself . Inside the google play settings, the play protect certification field says: Device is not certified.
I found somewhere that this is the reason why NFC payments do not work.
Do you think that the trick with the magisk old version will fix this?
Other than this the Chinese ROM version is working perfect!

Rooting chinese Mi 8 with unlocked bootloader and global ROM

Last week I purchased a Mi 8 from a mexican version of eBay, and I come from the legendary Mi A1.
I wanna have faith and think the seller did not have any bad intentions when he sold it to me, because it's a chinese version with MIUI 10 global ROM. It obviously has its bootloader unlock.
I'm aware of:
China Mi 8 + GLOBAL ROM + Unlocked booloader = safe
China Mi 8 + China ROM + Locked booloader = safe
China Mi 8 + GLOBAL ROM + Locked booloader = BRICK!
To keep it short, I wanna be able to use Google Pay and Netflix, so I wanna root my Mi 8. As far as I read, I don't need to flash MIUI.eu, only root and use Magisk tricks.
I downloaded this TWRP: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-8/development/recovery-twrp-3-2-3-1110-t3869729, and another one from a site that I don't remember.
I didn't want to flash it because I don't want to risk bricking it ot bootlooping it. With the Mi A1 I needed to boot into a "temporary" TWRP and then flash the real thing, so I tried the same thing. The TWRPs didn't boot at all. So, is it safe to flash that latest TWRP? If I root and tinker with Magisk, will I be able to bypass Google's certification?
It is safe to flash that recovery. I'm afraid that you might have to decrypt your phone by formating data. Otherwise I really recommend you to flash Xiaomi.eu, it passes SafetyNet and it has less bloatware, you don't even need to flash Magisk. I was on Xiaomi.eu since RN3 MTK as that ROM is originally from my country and it was the best option and I still consider their ROM as one of the best if not the best.

So, the TWRP is only flasheable and not bootable? I don't mind the bloatware,as I find it actually useful, except for the Mi theme and app store (which I already uninstalled). Is the EU ROM aat the latest version? The day I got my phone I got the 10.2.1.0 update and installed it normally.
To root I have to do the verity dm thing, right?
Lastly. I only want to root and not flash any other ROM for the time being, because I like to edit root/system/media stuff and some build prop lines for fun. That's what I did with my A1 to entertain myself.
EDIT: The formatting data part is really a bummer. It took me a day to set everything up and I don't wanna do it again.

You have to flash twrp recovery > reboot to twrp recovery > root device with magisk and then reboot to miui.
Yes eu rom is always updated to latest version!

It's safe. You can install each custom you want. You must remember only one thing. It's not allowed to install global miui and lock bootloader.

I am on official LOS 16 and it's very good and stable ROM for Mi8 but other custom roms are good as well. If you can buy Mi 8 much cheaper than Mi9 or k20pro that will be ok. If not I would prefer k20pro (mi 9t pro)

It depends on what are your preferences. If you will be use any custom rom there is not any reason to pay more for global version. Remember that if you would like to has locked bootloader you can use only chinese miui rom ( Chinese and English language only) on Chinese version.

Try to flash Miui Dev-Rom but without success

...I am trying to flash the latest version of the MI9 Miui Dev-ROM but get always the massage
" You're allow to flash the newest dev version publishedby Miui forum from stable version only"
currently I am on V10.2.12.0 on my global Mi9 (bootloader locked)
Any idea how to change to the Dev-Rom
Thx for your support!
If I'm not wrong, you have to unlock the bootloader first and then flash it.
Thx for your reply, but ROMs released from Xiaomi don't require an unlocked Bootloader..... Normally!

Taken from Xiaomi official side:
Note: You can upgrade your phone by Local Update method without unlocking your phone. The method suits for the situations listed below for sure: Update to Global Stable ROM from Global Stable ROM, Update to Global Beta ROM from Global Beta ROM, Update to Global Beta ROM from Global Stable ROM and vice versa. If you encounter the issue that the reboot page keep loading for a long time after flashing, you can choose to wipe all data via entering Recovery Mode. You can turn off your device and then hold both Volume+ button and Power button at the same time to enter Recovery Mode.
I think the problem ist an other one.
You have not the real Global Rom - its the GLobal EEA Version - some like the Russian or Indian Version of MIUI.
This time the also release e EEA Version for the European Mi9's.
It could be that there never will be a Devloper Rom for Mi 9. So it musst be called MI9 EEA Global beta.
I think the real Global Version will be released later for markets like Malaysia or Hong Kong.
Dont like that, cause im also effectet, but i think thats it These time.

Make sense, as there is an "EEA section" with a stable ROM on the MIUI page and a "global section" for the Dev-ROM...means I need to wait until I can unlock my Bootloader to switch!?

Yes but be careful, if you Flash via unlocked Bootloader you can't relock. if you do, you get softbricked.
Also with unlocked Bootloader you cant use GPay without Magisk and with Magisk ist also a bit tricky These days.
And i also think without Global EEA Rom you will los Widevine L1, but i cant confirm this, but i think so.
So better you wait to see if there will come a EEA Global Beta or you better stay with the Stable one.

You can, it's the same ROM, at least for xiaomi.eu
The first thing I do when I buy a xiaomi / redmi / poco is to change my rom to xiaomi.eu. I prefer to have the mi phone and mi messages aplication and there are options that the Global rom does not have, such as super wallpapers for example.
Has ther been any issue about going back to Official Global such as Anti-Roll-Back etc.?
Didn't flash for some time and asking myself if it's still a problem...

Once you went back to the official, did you notice performance improvement? I'm on xiaomi.eu and found a couple of issues with apps and also some apps are behaving very slow. I don't remember that in the week or so that I had the stock Rom....
I assume you are already unlock bootloader. Just flash it with miflashtool (found on official website). I already tested. From Global to EU and back to Global Indonesian. #DWYOR
The regular Global is suck, dialer, message and contact using google product.

Question Mi11, EU or Global ROM? Which is better?

Hi,
Just ordered a Mi11 from China, and I would like to flash it with a global or EU stock firmware.
Would you recommend the Global or the EU one?
I am not a customer rom type really and I would just like to have the phone as close as a stock firmware experience with google services, OTA s and all.. although I understand it will never be perfect since the boot loader needs to stay unlocked.
Is it just a matter of unlocking BL and flash it with a stock firmware found here https://c.mi.com/global/miuidownload/index, am I right?
Thanks

I personally have tested Xiaomi Eu and MMX, I find MMX in my opinion to be more stable even on weeklies even tho it's based on EU. It also comes pre rooted and if you don't want root just flash the EU boot IMG instead. On MMx you also get widevine l1

I'm using MMX MIUI 13 latest beta build with some app updated from miui stock apps group and I have the new widgets and phone is very responsive and good battery performance. After I unlocked the bootloader I downloaded the fastboot rom from their site and just flashed every straight forward and easy. Just remeber to format data once you do the initial setup I'm case you have issues with storage permissions. So basically after you flashed go through the setup screen don't set it up just finish a quick set up and go to settings and format again through settings after it's done just setup device like you would normally do.

So you must said EEA, not EU for don't create understanding problems.
Be careful because you have a Chinese model, so don't relock bootloader (if using MiFlash) because by default MiFlash apply option "Lock & Clean". Each time you'll use MiFlash, be sure to select on the right bottom just "Clean all", never lock with a another ROM model than Chinese. If you lock bootloader with a EEA/Global ROM, you will brick your device.

Many thanks for that, worked perfectly on my mi 11
Got the phone yesterday but the first impression is quite bad.
Poor build quality in my opinion and the battery is laughable.
Had a realme x2pro for more than 2 years and still going very strong, built like a tank.
Anyway, started bootloader unlocking countdown, only 150 hrs left
