New to rooting/unlocking/custom recoveries, have a question - Xiaomi Mi A2 / 6X Questions & Answers

Hi I'm just new to this whole thing and I can find guides on how to unlock and root and stuff but there's still some questions that I have. I found a youtube video on unlocking bootloader on mi a1 without losing all data and was wondering if that's possible on the mi a2 as well? Also is any data lost when installing magisk? Also does rooting mean that I will no longer be able to get security patches and android pie when it comes out? Thanks

Canadian P20 Pro version CLT-L04, Questions about Magisk and bootloader unlock

Hi! I picked up my Canadian P20 Pro last week and couldn't be happier. It's been many years since I've owned a rootable device though and a lot has changed! I've done my best to read through all the guides for rooting the P20 Pro and it's only lead to further confusion as there seem to be many recent advancements. There seem to be a lot of different versions of this phone too. So I have some questions I'm hoping someone can answer easily! Let's assume my bootloader is already unlocked....
1) there's a really great guide on rooting the P20 Pro using All In One tool. But that requires flashing TWRP to achieve root using Magisk. I do not require TWRP as I only want root and do not wish to flash any roms.
a) is there a way to root with Magisk and NOT flash TWRP? I can't seem to find a straight answer on this...
b) failing that, can TWRP safely be removed and keep root afterward?
2) after unlocking the bootloader I was welcomed by a terrifyingly orange warning about my now 'unsafe' phone. I've read mixed things on hiding this. Is there currently a way to hide it?
3) how does the process work for OTA updates on an unlocked bootloader assuming there is no TWRP? I've read differing opinions on the necessity of flashing a no_check.img to the ramdisk and have no understanding of the new security checks on these phones. Can I run risk of bricking my phone through an automated update?
Ultimately I'm scared of forgetting TWRP is on my phone and accepting an update that'll brick it. Any information is welcome as are similar questions!
I am also curious if there is a good root process for this phone. Find anything yet?

I have a Canadian CLT-L04 that i rebranded and rooted to CLT-L29 with the guide on here.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hu...de-how-to-root-debrand-remove-retail-t3788326
if you want better firmware compared to version 109 thats still on clt-l04 you can follow this guide, it worked well for me. (don't wait canadian OTA it'll take too long)
1) quite sure that TWRP is the easiest and safest way to root. Currently unaware of a better way to root the phone.
b) if you remove TWRP by flashing a stock recovery_ramdisk, root is kept. If you do an OTA though you might lose root.
2) thats here to stay i believe. Cannot find a way to hide it currently.
3)In this guide under the "install an OTA Stock Update: PC Method" you will find all the information you need.
cheers
I finally found the info I needed in this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hu...ide-getting-started-unlock-twrp-root-t3806180
Overall it was a very simple process and took less than an hour including reading. Once you've got your bootloader unlock code the all in one tool handles it from there. Unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP, reboot into TWRP, flash Magisk and you're done. You can flash the no_check file over TWRP if you want to be ready for updates but I decided to leave TWRP on for now. Loving having root on this phone so far!
On a different note, has anyone discovered any ROMs for this phone yet that can handle the notch? I almost tried Lineage until I found out there is no notch support. I've grown strangely fond of the thing for some reason lol

If you do a full backup of the L04 in TWRP before rebranding you should be able to go back to it easily at any time, just remember to save it somewhere safe other than the phone itself. If you've already flashed and are looking to go back you may find someone willing to share a stock backup if you ask around. But always best to do your own backup first, then you can go back whenever you like!

Anyone unlocked bootloader and rooted recently for the L04 model with 120(C792) Sept-2018 update?
Im scared to update before unlocking and rooting as the update might do something to fastboot etc. (this has happened to LG)
If not, then Ill update but if so, Ill just not update and unlock it as it is.

It's really easy to update once you've unlocked, I would suggest unlocking first if you have concerns. I have an L04 as well and just updated to 120 with no problems.

Everything working properly, just need to root/twrp etc. now.

No problem, glad it worked for you. I've soft bricked and recovered my phone a few times now experimenting so if you run into any problems I'm happy to help! Lots to learn with the P20.
I have a CLT-L04 8.1.0.136 C69 with October security patch from Mexico I want to rebrand it to CLT- L29 to get wifi calling and get rid of all the bloatware. Could I use this tutorial from dladz's tutorial:

One of the notes mentions the following: I) ]NOTE*** If you are on a later firmware than 120, please do not attempt this guide!!
I have only rooted one phone before in my life so I am no expert. I do no want to mess up my phone becuse it is the only one that I have. Also If I unlock the boot loader and rebrand can i get OTAs and the upcoming Pie release? Thanks for the help!
LineageOS 15.1 on L04
I installed LineageOS 15.1 on my L04 with out any issue. Some things to consider. USB-C will only charge the device, Titanium Backup will install but doesn't get root access and you'll miss the camera application.

Did you install it with a locked bootloader ? I really dont feel like paying for an unlock code. Would like to try Lineage though.

I do have an unlocked bootloader. Truth is i'm addicted to Rom's lol. That in mind I have tried every Rom, kernel, flash-able zip within this Forum and I can't brick this thing. L04 Canadian. Lineage is the best Rom for our device.
Roms that work:
- Lineage - Hauwei camera can be installed and works, dark mode works well.
------- Doesn't work: USB-C audio, NFC, RAW Option in the camera, Second ear piece as speaker, main speaker works well.
- First Ever Android 9 - Being the first build it works well. (Note: When I installed this rom I never installed the RemoveEncryption-P20Pro.zip) Seemed to work just fine without it. I did run it just because I wanted to see if it would brick my phone. It didn't.
-------Doesn't work: Dark mode, NFC, RAW Option in camera, Second ear piece as speaker, main speaker works well, seems to kill TWRP. eRecovery needed to get TWRP to function.
- AOSP 9 - Berkeley-Flex - Do Not Use...not ready.

What did you use to unlock your bootloader ? Funky ? Also I know what you mean I am addicted to Roms as well  Thanks for all the info I really appreciate it.

bootloader

Is it possible to unlock?
At this moment, no.
You will know as it'll be reported here very early. There are some third party companies that do it. Some are cheaper than others.
For the moment, there is nothing..
Sucks I know
I asked this before on another similar thread and didn't get a response. Is it possible to dump the bootloader from either an unlocked or locked phone to analyse it for potential vulnerabilities either in how it handles the unlock code, or more generally that would allow a user to soft-mod unlock the phone? I know for the 5th, 7th, and 9th gen Fire 7 tablets exploits were found in the LK part of the bootloader which eventually allowed for a customised version of TWRP to be flashed onto the devices, and later LineageOS. If we could dump the current Huawei bootloader surely we could try to find if there are any similar exploits?
I am found metod but it needs mrt dongle((
Tbh custom roms aren't really important anymore. Google is already ruining android everytime a new update comes around, like the overlay feature that was introduced in oreo but then removed for no reason.
Besides EMUI is already optimised for the chip so, again, no reason for custom roms and/or rooting (unless you want to remove bloatware but that can be solved via ADB)

Question Xiaomi Mi 11 use for hardware research

Hi everyone. I have been lurking the forums a lot - there is a lot of useful info on mobile platforms here, more than anywhere else on the internet. I apologize in advance for a long post, but I feel like the only people who can answer my question are here on these forums. I am a graduate student at a university and my research project is on mobile SOC (System on Chip) architectures. As such, I want to grab an Android phone and evaluate its hardware performance using tools like simpleperf, which is a tool available from Android (it is their version of linux perf tool, which reads hardware counters directly from CPU's PMU (Performance monitoring unit)). Counters I am talking about are things like: cache misses, branch mispredictions, etc....
I was able to use the tool on my Pixel 5 after rooting it, but this is my personal phone and has older SOC (and I can not write to the file system, so I am using simpleperf by just displaying results in terminal), and my academic advisor told me that we can go ahead with the project and buy a new phone (with latest Snapdragon 888 SOC). I have in front of me Samsung S21 Ultra, but I am in Canada, so I have US version, and this phone can not be unlocked and/or rooted from what I understand, so we will be returning it and looking for another device (why claim you participate in open source when you lock your phone shut and prevent any development on it?)
As such, I am looking to buy Xiaomi Mi 11, root it, and use it to collect hardware counters. I live in Canada and so I would imagine I need to order the international version. So my questions to the esteemed members of this community are:
1. Am I right in assuming that Xiaomi Mi 11 can be rooted, so that I have root permissions on the underlying linux when I run adb shell and then su root. On my rooted Pixel 5 I have that.
2. Can the file system be mounted in RW mode? simpleperf can dump files with evaluation results and this requires writable file system.
3. If file system is not writable, is there a writable directory? For example, Samsung S21 has a directory /sd_card, to which I was able to write files. Is there something similar on Xiaomi Mi 11?
4. In general, are Xiaomi devices developer friendly? Do they have a bunch of special things installed like Odin on Samsung, or is it closer to Pixel devices by google, which are developer friendly?
Thank you very much!
Pavel.
Hey there. Sorry for not having all the answers for you but as no body wrote nothing yet I can just tell you that yes you can unlock bootloader and root your phone which should give you possible all the rights you need I hope
You can unlock developer options and there you can tweak some stuff. I am not developer but I do like to tweak
I think you should go ahead and buy mi 11 and research here what you can do with the device.
Note that you need to wait 168h to unlock the bootloader after applying for unlock.
Good Luck !
Thank you very much for response! Could you elaborate a little bit about 168h wait please? Is that 168 hours?
I also forgot to ask: is it possible to lock the bootloader after unlock and root?
Yes 168 hours that is 7 days of looong waiting.
It is but only on the rom that device came with. stock rom. If you change rom and want to lock it you might brick device (lock) but than again you can unlock it and fix it by yourself easily ,
I saw other user saying that he flashed global on orange rom and lock bootloader. but I think it is the same based rom so in his case it was possible.
I see. Thank you. 7 day wait is ok. I guess what I am trying to ask is whether I will be able to return device to original specifications?
Aha , yes I think there should not be problems. You just need to flash stock rom with lock all.bat command.
I advise you to research here and on the net how to properly unlock and other stuff while you wait for the device and unlock. there are steps to follow to have successful unlock and flash and other .
I see. Thank you very much!

Bootloader Xiaomi Redmi 9

Hello to everyone reading this, wish you all the best in the New Year.. Now let's get to the problem I have.. I'm using Brave as my browser and I am sure most of you are familiar with Brave Ads, well they don't work on my phone.. While duckduckgo-ing through I stumbled on possible reason why it may not work, the said reason was unlocked bootloader.. It was suggested to download SafetyNet test and check if everything is as it should be. To my surprise my bootloader was unlocked (I double checked via developer options since Xiaomi offers information on that there as well) but the issue is I never flashed any ROM or Firmware nor anything similar, it's stock as it can be from the store.. Now that I elaborated the best I can (Since my native language is not English) I need to ask 3 questions as stupid as the may sound.
1. Is it possible that bootloader unlocked by itself or some shady app?
2. Does that lock icon below front camera unlocks bootloader by tapping when you turn on the phone? (Since it was locked before and now its not)
3. Is there a way I can lock it without using PC and adb tools?
Thank you for your answers and time, much appreciated!
PS: I would add pictures if needed but since I didn't tamper with the phone nor change anything in developer options I doubt it's of any help.
To lock the bootloader in mi you need to flash the stock rom and if you only need to pass the safety net checks install magisk canary and it's not actually possible to unlock an mi device without the authentication of Xiaomi so it can not unlock by itself as far as I know. Are you totally sure you or someone in your family or friends didn't unlock the bootloader because if not this may be a dangerous exploit used by a shady app and should be reported to Xiaomi now.
Not a single soul have a access to my phone, and if they did they sure as hell don't know hot to flash custom roms or unlock bootloader.. So it might be some shady app.. But how would I check and see if that is true?
PS: And about magisk canary I don't see it in google play store, but I suppose that is apk for rooted phones? The issue is my phone is not rooted if that is the case.

Question How to flash a pixel 5a that has a custom rom installed on it with original or stock android

I was wondering if anyone can help me I recently bought a pixel 5a that came pre installed with a custom version of android 11 now this rom that they put is very annoying as it blocks many thing for example installing apk’s now that wouldn’t be so bad if I was able to use adb to get the apps that I want on the phone but their software restricts developer options
Your browser is not able to display this video.
so I have no way of enabling usb debugging so I can’t use adb all of this has caused me to want to flash stock android back onto my phone the only problem with that is that the bootloader is locked so does anyone know any way how to unlock the bootloader without enabling usb debugging and oem unlocking or at least how to unlock developer mode
Which custom OS is installed?
I remember reading a similar thread about a Pixel4a someone bought which had ArcaneOS installed. I think the solution was to remotely unlock the bootloader using the Google Pixel website's restore function. Be careful if you choose to restore your phone to the latest Android 13 though because you won't be able to roll back to Android 12 anymore.
