ANT+ Support in XZ3 - Sony Xperia XZ3 Questions & Answers

XZ3 is a Snapdragon 845-based mobile phone. The sources for this SoC are available here: https://source.codeaurora.org/quic/la/platform/manifest/commit/?h=LA.UM.6.3.r4-04300-sdm845.0

If i understand correctly, Snapdragon 845 is ANT+-capable out of the box, right?
Is it possible, that one could build a patch to bring ANT+ to this phone? The missing ANT+-feature is the only reason why i did not bought the phone yet. My decision goes betwenn S9(+), Note 9 and XZ3, but i dont want to buy a bloatware phone from samsung anymore...

[Q] Is 'seed' the code name of all 2nd gen Android One with Snapdragon 410 chip?

I just want to know if they (i-mobile IQ II, General Mobile 4G, etc) all have the same code name 'seed'?
Android One phones with Similar specs to GMG4. Yes.

Every single Android One device with a Snapdragon 410 beating inside it is a seed.
Second gen MTK variants were originally named as 'sprout' by LAVA and INFINIX, but I said, **** you, and changed them to 'seedmtk' Official TWRP is now available for both variants, with CM13 already available for Snapdragon ones and on the way for MTK.

Android Version(Prime vs OEM)

Not talking about ads. More updates and android versions. I read that only the prime version is getting security patches, and that the OEM version hasn't gotten a single update. Also, has the prime version received 6.0.1?

I'm not sure exactly where I read it but the Prime variant has definitely received more updates. But the OEM is due for one soon.
OEM ROM is so old, still on 6.0. I guess they couldn't spend one developer day to recompile to latest 6.0.1 branch and kill all those Android bugs that were fixed by Google.

BLU just rebadges Chinese phones, they do no development(aside from minor branding changes). They rely on the actual OEM to do all the work, in this case Tinno. Getting a current Android build from most of these budget Chinese OEMs is very rare.

Thanks for the info, I was not aware of that. So who is doing the updates for the Amazon Prime ROM? BLU, an Amazon contractor or the OEM?

Amazon, probably puts pressure on BLU who in turn contacts Tinno, all of the updates come from Tinno. If you review any of the update.zip files you will see Tinno as the OEM

Nexus 6 change for something new

I'm wondering what should I pick , Galaxy S8 or oneplus 5, one of these will be for about 2 years of usage. Good camera, very fast and responsive system, and these are for exactly the same price in my country.
Personally, I'd never buy a Samsung...
I'm very happy with my OP3T though, that replaced my Shamu.
I am waiting for Essential PH-1 or Pixel XL 2

Honestly, if you're on XDA and you own a Nexus chances are you want the freedom reliability and customization of a Nexus device, I own the Nexus 6 OP3/T and I'm getting my Op5 in the mail soon. It was an easy choice for me. So I hope this helps:

You're saying they are the same price, but are they? OnePlus 5 has 8gb of RAM/128GB of storage and Dual Cameras with Optical Zoom and timely updates and Open Source OxygenOs.
I know Samsung has this ridiculously long feature list but they lack all crucial Android things in my opinion. I'm not gonna list every one but the main one for me is the spirit of Android: "Open Source"
In conclusion: if you do decide to get the OnePlus 5 the entire community is with you and please use my referral link :highfive:

@BoiBundy, I'm waiting to see if anyone gets the OP5 working on Sprint. I think Verizon is also questionable. Of course, that might be the push I need to move to T-Mobile [emoji3]

You have Sprint? Not too sure if it'll work, they say that they have 34 different antennae so maybe bcuz the phone is unlocked. I have At&t and apparently Some people are already reporting to be getting blazingly fast LTE+ speeds. I live in Urban NY so hoping this is true.

It's more complex with Sprint (and maybe Verizon) than just having the correct frequencies. At least with Sprint, the trick includes getting activated on the network. Someone in the OP5 forum is actually working through the process this week.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Back when Google was selling the Nexus 6/p I read a topic on this extensively (for no apparent reason but just to be aware on the topic). People with Iphones, and Nexuses bought from Google had to call up Sprint and add their MEID/IMEI's to the database. I'm thinking, in theory it shouldn't be a problem especially since they have BYOD(Bring Your Own Device) plans. Idk how they operate with dualSIM devices though.

You do know that android is not open source right? Only AOSP is open source. What google ships with devices is not. Just like Oxygen is not open source.
This is a common misconception.

I did say the spirit of Android if I remember correctly. And I didn't mention one thing about what Google ships with their devices(although they are based off of AOSP). And I believe you are incorrect in your statement that OxygenOS isn't open source because they released the kernel source days before the launch and I've attached a screenshot of their website for your viewing. Thanks for the clarity though there are no misconceptions here.

I just mentioned those as an example.
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/oxygen-os-open-source.557212/
Just because the kernel is is released (licensed under the gpl So source is required) Android is licensed under the apache license (which allows for it to be closed sourced)

OOS is not open source. I cannot go to github, or whever the source is stored, and read and compile it myself. Android Core is released under Apache, but not Google's goodies(hence why AOSP is so bare nowadays; Google has closed the vast majority of your basic apps) The only reason why the kernel source gets pushed is because OnePlus has a legal obligation to do so since they used the Linux kernel which is licensed under GPL

Sony XZ3 Updatepolicy

Hello everybody,
i was in a local consumer electronic center (Saturn) last weekend. A sony promoter told me, that sony gives a guaranty of four years for Android updates @ XZ3. Could be true, because of the relative pure android on the device, but i want to be sure. I googled around but i wasnt able to find a official announcement about this.
Is this true?
If so, is this for main android updates (android 10, 11, ...) for four years or lets say only two years for main updates and two more years for bugfixes and security updates?
Thanks
Sony gives on average two Android versions worth of updates, which would equate to two years of support.
What @mufunyo said is about correct. Basically whatever the phone's OS was at release + 2 more versions is Sony's usual update method. So if you get the XZ3, and following Sony's usual support, the XZ3 should get up to the R version.
Honestly though Sony is also pretty good with their Xperia open source initiative and after 2 years you can still experience a rich custom ROM ecosystem for flagships. I once managed to update my ancient Xperia S (LT26i) to Android Marshmallow with a LineageOS ROM. That phone originally shipped with Gingerbread! That's 5 major versions later! (We don't count Honeycomb since it was for tablets only.)
Thats good to read, thanks for this informations. This let me tend to buy a XZ3 a bit more, but....
... at the moment, Sony has no more ANT+-support out of the box (i thin Z5 Premium was the last phone with ANT+), so this is the only reason why i didnt buy one till now. I think snapdragon 845 is ANT+-capable, but i dont have a confirmation about this and i dont have a statement from anybody about the possibility to patch the XZ3 with ANT+-features.
I need and will buy a new phone in the next ~4 weeks, and if there is no answer (or better: solution) for this, i think i have to buy Samsung again. Sad to say...

Early adopters

Hello, does the article refer only for the Chinese users?
https://www.rmupdate.com/2020/10/14/realme-ui-2-0-android-11-new-beta-early-adopters/
I'm not sure if it's only for Chinese market, but it looks to me like it's regional, since I don't have it.
They usually give early access and other perks to India only unfortunately
I am using the indian variant and i also dont have an option to use beta

I read on Realme Forums that article was fake news anyway, bit early for early access if there is going to be any kind of early public access at all.
