Notification sound low volume problem - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

So I have been using my galaxy note 9 for the past 7 days. And guess what like everyone else I have been facing low notification volume issue. Now I have to mention here I am from India specifically Kolkata, N-960 being the model number. Unable to hear call sound I visited the smart Cafe twice and the authorized service centre twice. They had me almost convinced that only the bottom firing speakers work while receiving notification and phone calls.
I bought the black variant with 128gb storage. After coming back the second time from the service centre. I wasn't satisfied with the incoming notification volume..... I was listening to some song with the headphones on..... When suddenly I received a call and found that both the speakers were firing. I removed the headphone jack while the incoming call notification was still and the volume increased even more. I was taken by surprise.
After finishing the call... I called my number without the headphones on.... And found that only the bottom firing speakers were working not the ear piece stereo speakers. I repeated the process with the headphones.... And the results were exactly similar to the last time.....both speakers working fine..... And even after removing the headphone jack from the socket with the phone still ringing.... The volume increased. It made me absolutely sure.... It wasn't a software use.
I took it to the authorized service centre.... The 'quality control officer' had me almost convinced that this was because of the Dolby sound activation.... When I asked for comparison with another note 9. They said they did not have one so I visited the nearest smart Cafe.... And one of the sales executive lady was using the blue variant of the phone.... I tested the same..... And VOILA..... her phone was facing no issue. She told to go back
... And register the complaint and ask for a job sheet. Which the quality control officer wouldn't allow..... He wanted to see it with his own eyes and run some tests on the kind lady's phone.... All at the expense of my valuable office hours!
Anyway.... I know I have blabbered a lot..... But the main thing is..... PEOPLE WHOEVER ARE USING GALAXY NOTE 9 ALL OVER THE WORLD...... AND FACING LOW VOLUME ISSUE..... PLEASE RUN THE TEST THAT I DID.
*BOTH THE SPEAKERS ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK* NOT JUST THE BOTTOM FIRING ONES..... I AM GETTING MINE REPLACED AND YOU SHOULD TOO. DON'T COMPROMISE AND SPREAD THE WORD. EVEN IF THE NEW PHONE ARRIVES WITH THE SAME ISSUE I AM GOING TO ASK FOR ANOTHER HANDSET THAT IS NOT FAULTY.
AND GUESS WHAT MY BROTHER'S ONE MONTH OLD NOTE 9 IS FACING THE SAME ISSUE..... THE BLACK 128GB VARIANT.
THE REASON FOR THIS POST IS TO LET AS MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THIS ISSUE, AS POSSIBLE.

Did the sound come out on both speakers when you tested it in notification menu? Just tested mine. Ringtones come out of both speakers notifications only bottom speaker. All normal.

When I'm in the settings menu to select a ringtone, its plays from both speakers, it's when I get an actual incoming call it only fires the bottom speaker. From what I researched that's normal and they way they come out of the box. You're lucky apparently lol. Really dumb not to fire both speakers for a ringer/notification, i understand the older Samsung devices only fired from the bottom speaker but why not take advantage of the dual speakers or atleast have a toggle in the settings for it

I have smart alert off under advanced features. Meaning the proximity sensor is not on all the time. That could be the reason. Will run more tests. Speaker phone only comes out of bottom speaker as well. Rubbish. LoL.

For me all the sensors were turned on. Cause the phone used to go black everytime I was on a call...... Or my hand hovered over the top front of the phone.

Yes ringtones and notification tones should come out of both the speakers! I have seen it with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears! It's either that..... Or the sales exec's phone was faulty and ours are alright! I like to believe the reverse!

Lols! I'm not lucky! The sales exec lady is lucky. But then again she has given hope to all of us! That it's either a hardware glitch or a software glitch...... But somewhere out there is a phone that works perfectly fine. And ours don't. Even the quality officer had me convinced I was wrong.... But thankfully the lady was there! A major glitch is going on! Samsung should ideally accept and address it.

Ok, I just plugged my headphones in and the menu where one chooses notifications, the notifications played in both ears. Atmos on or off.
What's this got to do with notifications not playing out of top speaker , since mine doesn't either when I actually receive a "real" notification.

Yes.... Ringtones and notifications both should use both the speakers. And that lady exec's phone was doing just the same. Only face book notification used the lower speaker..... But whatsapp and other notifications including ringtones were using both the speakers.

What I am trying to say is in my case..... With the headphones plugged in...... When my phone rang.... The ringtone was coming out of both speakers and not just the rear one. Same thing with whatsapp and messages. But once I take the headphones off..... It was using only the rear channel. Now ideally whatever be the case..... Headphones on or off..... If the design is modeled to use only bottom firing speakers for notifications and ringtones...... This should not happen.
And what I experienced with the sales exec lady's phone is that while she receives a call, ringtone comes out of both the speakers (making it loud and very audible for her in a noisy environment) even with no headphones attached to her hand set's jack and mine doesn't. In my case it utilizes both speakers only when the headphones are attached.
See ideally while you're selecting the notification tone or ringtone.... Both speakers work..... Why? To give you an impression of how loud it is going to be when you receive a notification or a call. But when you actually receive a notification or a call it uses only the bottom firing speakers (in your case ringtones from both the speakers and notification from bottom firing speakers). That's not how it should be and I have seen that with my own eyes.... And the Samsung authorized centre has finally accepted that my handset was faulty. Hence you can understand that the ideal case should not be that only the bottom firing speakers should work. Ideally both speakers should work for everything, except Facebook notifications..... Which I have not been able to figure out yet though!
I hope I was able to explain myself!
BTW which variant are you using as in colour and rom.

Speakerphone SOFTWARE "Issue?"

Hey guys, I've noticed a weird bug with stock 4.2.1 on my Nexus 4, and was wondering if anyone is experiencing the same thing. If not, then perhaps it is the hardware and not the software, but the nature of this bug has lead me to believe it is software-related.
Let me first say, right off the bat, that I have had no other issues with my phone, and that when I play games or watch movies, the volume is loud, clear, crisp--just all around excellent. However, when I use the speakerphone on a call, it seems to be... quieter than everything else. So I tried playing around with it, and discovered something interesting.
The next time you're in a call, put it on speakerphone. Note how loud it sounds to you. Then, turn the volume down one notch, and then put it back up to the max volume again (I've only experimented with it being at max already, then turning it down one notch, and then back up).
Does it sound WAY louder? And does it sound distorted, almost overblown? Why would it be like that during a call, and why would adjusting the volume down and then back up again have such a result if it was NOT software related? And, furthermore, why would it be blown out and distorted here where as for everything else it sounds superb?
Let me know your thoughts--maybe I need to RMA? I got this one at T-Mobile (I didn't have to pay the equipment installment due to my current plan, so it was cheaper to buy it @ $200 from them).
Thanks!
Same Here .. I believed it was the only with this problem since no one had said.
I think is Software Issue.
Yeah I noticed that no one had mentioned this, but I believe if it's software then it must be affecting everyone. At least, it should be affecting stock users. I guess I noticed this sooner because I use speaker phone when I'm driving in the car, since my ragtag bluetooth receiver that outputs through a tape that's plugged into it and inserted into the tape deck only transmits music and notifications, not calls--for some reason--over the car speakers. Just got sick of plugging into the phones headphone jack every time I got in and out of the car! lol

See but mine doesn't crackle or do any of that stuff during calls or anything else. And it's not blown out sounding during anything other than calls where I have lowered the volume and then put it back up to max right after. I don't think the problem is the same as it is here, it just seems similar, for sure.
Also, when not on speaker phone, the in call volume is perfect and without issue. It's limited to specifically what I mentioned in the original post.
Thanks for the reply, but I'm talking about it being overtly loud and only being so when adjusting the volume down and back up to max, and that prior to that, the volume is just a bit on the quiet side at the maximum. Not crackling/popping/etc!
cool..sorry about that.
Exact same situation with me.little buzz while on call nothing else.

[Q] Possible blown speaker or just interference?

I'm getting some sort of buzzing from my phone, whenever I press a navigation button, or press any on screen button/action. I first noticed this when I was setting up my phone and deselecting which apps to install from a previous backup. Every time I would untick a box, it would make a sound for about 2 seconds. The best way to describe the sound, is like the ticking/buzzing sound a hard disk drive makes, only much quieter.
This seems to happen only when I take an action (IE pressing the home button, pressing on an app to open, ticking a check box, etc.)
This seems to only be noticeable in a quiet room, and regardless of the phone being on mute or not.
Obviously there is no disk drive in the phone, so my only guess would be some sort of interference, or static coming from the top earpiece. I'm leaning towards a blown speaker, because when I play music, I can hear a very faint buzzing/popping sound coming from the top earpiece.
Anyone else able to duplicate this?

Play Store. Just picked it up yesterday from UPS. That's what I'm thinking as well. Do you know how the RMA process is like with the GPS?
they'll replace your phone for free. what they do is they Charge you another $649 (as a temporary hold on your credit card), while they send you a replacement unit. WHEN you send them the defective one back, they cxl the $649 hold on your credit card.

The RMA instructions can be found here: https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2411741?hl=en&ref_topic=3244667
I've read good things but have no experience for any device I've purchased. Because of the stocking issues (worse than the N4 and N5 at their launches combined), I don't know how soon you can expect a replacement. (Way to shine, Moto!)
Have you all considered that the sound you are hearing is the feedback sounds from preforming actions?
To access (which they are all on by default) and turn them off go into Settings>Sound & Notification>Other Sounds
Before doing anything, be sure that these are not the sounds you are talking about. Last thing you want to do is RMA something that is not broke.

I did this too, I checked and the sound i get is "expected" slightly different if you enable and test agains the nexus 5 in lollipop but its is quite similar in sound. Its more of a popping sound for the lock screen and a bop sound for touching the screen.

I liked the sound on my nexus 5 but don't like it on the 6. I am not sure if it is just more clear now or what but I turned them off.
I just noticed this as well. I had Kritika (game) running on my phone, media volume at 0. I set it down on my desk to do something else and that's when I heard a faint static-y, hissing/crackling noise. It was coming from the top speaker. I held the phone up to my ear to be sure. I switched into Kik and the sound went away. I closed Kritika and opened up Slingshot Braves (another game, media volume still at 0) and there was a consistent white noise coming from the top speaker. Same thing happened when I tried it with SoundCloud and Play Music. It wasn't erratic like it was when Kritika was open, but there was definitely something there.
Seems to me like something is wrong with the media volume control.
EDIT: I've started a thread on the Google forums. Feel free to chime in.

You're not alone.
I'm experiencing this issue as well. There's also a subreddit post and another post here on XDA about it... I'm wondering if it's a defect or if it's normal.
Happens in top speaker for me as well. I notice it particularly well with the second half of the ringtone/notification sound, "Ganymede." Should we ask for a replacement?
Nexus 6 Volume/Speaker Bug
Same here. I am using the ATT Nexus 6 and have also noticed that the volume drops drastically when receiving a phone call. Also, it is difficult to hear the person on the other end even with the volume all the way up. The volume issue also applies when the phone is on "speaker" mode. It is still hard to hear. This may be a Lollipop issue.
I don't want to double post but I can confirm after receiving a replacement device that my original device did have a speaker defect. More info in my other post @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=57118790#post57118790

Viper Audio to increase call volume

do not own this device but from past devices such apps/enhancements change the media volume not in call earpiece volume ...could be wrong...think if rooted someone has to figure out how to change the audio amplification values...like on Samsung there would be a mixer.xml file inside system/etc I think.

I own the Mi Mix. Call volume is not an issue.
In doors with volume at about 25% I held a 30 minute call and sound and clarity were excellent.
Outdoors while walking at 50% no issues.
From my experience too there's absolutely no issue with call volume or clarity on this phone. I've no idea where people have got this impression from?
A couple of the reviews have indicated the call volume is very low and muffled. I'll have mine today and I'll leave my 2 cents.

From my point of view the volume is loud enough, coming from a S7 edge. And I don't find the sound muffled at all, I find it even better as I don't get my ear agressed by high tones.

One of the reviewers noted that the 'loudest' place to listen is roughly 1/3 down the phone.
If you look at teardown pics, where the piezo is located, that seems roughly correct.
If you're trying to listen to the phone very 'high' like you would if there was a normal earpiece, that's probably a mistake.
Also, you kinda want to have as much skin contact with the phone as possible. It seems pretty loud if you just mash the phone against
your entire ear/cheek.

Try listening whole walking on a busy street or a hall full of people.
Can barely hear the other party.
I'm also not experiencing any issue with call volume. I immediately turned the volume all the way up when I first opened the device and had to turn it wayyy down when the first call came in because it was too loud lol.

Ringing through lower speaker only?

Is it just me or are also your devices ringing only through lower speaker? In a way, it seems logical, but it is way to quiet.
When I play media (f.e. with Poweramp) or even when I'm selecting a ringtone in settings, it plays through both speakers (fairly loud), but at incomnig call only lower speaker rings and unfortunately at least for me it's not loud enough (my previous Note 4 was way louder).
Suggestions (rooting is not an option)?

Are you serious? Dude, change your ringtone or something. It's plenty loud. If you can only hear it in a quiet environment when its ringer is up all the way, you either have a bad unit or bad hearing.

I tried many different ringtones and they are all loud enough, when previewing (t.i., playing through both speakers). But during the actual call and only on lower speaker, they are not.
I certainly don't have bad hearing, but I'm afraid, that the unit may be bad. Although, media plays very good and loud (both speakers).
hate to be that guy, but are you sure your ring tone volume isn't lowered? You can set them it independently of media, notifications, and system volume

Rigtone slider (and all the others too) all the way to the right, additionally set to MAX with Tasker on every incoming call...
Maybe I only see this problem because the ringtones were really loud until last week on my Note 4 .

Does the top and bottom speaker sound different to you?

Hello! I noticed the bottom speaker sounds a bit louder than the top one, specially with higher frequencies. Is this specific to my unit or is this due do a difference between the speakers in this phone? Anyone can relate?

Be aware that stereo signals might affect your perception of them. Try turning on mono audio in accessibility settings.
As far as physical differences go, they are indeed different in size. You can see it here:

After 2 weeks of owning this phone, I just noticed it now. Bottom speaker does sound louder than a top speaker. So disappointed to find out that both speakers aren't equal I bought this phone mainly for front stereo speakers.
I think Top speaker is an earphone doubling as speaker. Bottom speaker is a dedicated speaker.
I noticed something strange. After turned off the phone for a few minutes and then turn it back on, now both speakers sound balanced just like when i just got the phone and had not noticed this issue until now. Please try turning off the phone, not restart.

Software problem
Not hardware
Speakers hardware are great
I hope Asus releases updates that allows user to adjust the balance of stereo. I think it's also the stereo frequencies in each content. some music, video, and games are noticeably louder on bottom speaker, and some are louder on top speaker.
I just turn on mono audio when the speakers are in use. The stereo separation doesn't work well enough for me, and it just sounds fuller.
I'm also aware that the phone has 2 vibration motors, but I noticed the vibration is much stronger at the bottom, anyone noticed this?

I can definitely relate to this. But overall, I'm very satisfied with the quality of the speakers.
Do y'all have your bottom speaker blown out or distorted?
guys Ive owned several stereo phones before and almost all of them sound differently, you just need to turn on Mono audio as other's have mentioned too.
this phone has great speakers, reminds me of my HTC 820 boomsound speaker which were pretty loud back in the day, but this is loud and clear!
Bottom Speaker sounds louder
@Mike845 Thanks for posting this issue as I am also facing the same issue. I am skeptical as this being a hardware issue because I saw jerryrigeverything's video on YouTube and top speaker is indeed smaller than the bottom one.
I want to know that are the top bottom speaker should be of same intensity or is there a problem with my unit. Also if buttom speakers are loud than top one and there is no issue then I am very angry with Asus as one of the reason for buying this phone was dual front firing stereo speakers.
For all the other folks, I request you to check your device for this issue(balance) using this link youtu.be/2ZrWHtvSog4 . Here you'll get perfect idea if speakers are balanced or not.
Please help me so that I know that if this is an issue.

Yes at high volume bottom speaker does sound distorted.
Tweak for balancing speaker audio
Okay, first of all switch off and reboot (not restart) your phone.
Then go to AudioWizard, switch to normal mode if not already then don't exceed the volume beyond 10 notch. Now check, speakers would be balanced and clear.
It becomes unbalanced only after 10 notches where only bottom speakers volume gets increased and not top. Also beyond 10 there could be distortion in bottom speaker.
Hope it helps.
Also in Asus ROG Phone III
It is on Asus Rog Phone 3 too, very disappointed. With black crush issue.

I don't know how YouTubers are saying that Rog has got the best display ever, paid reviews probably. These YouTubers are taking people for granted.
Asus's image processing is just ****, black crush, red tint and what not.
I don't know why I went with this when OnePlus 7 pro was equally priced. Regretting my decision.
