Honor Play screen dimming - Honor Play Questions & Answers

Hello, I have disabled adaptive brightness and when I open some apps, the screen starts automatically dimm a bit. When i exit the app, the brightness returns to normal. For example it does in Chrome, messenger, stock message app, stock dialer, youtube and many more. It does not do in Gallery, weather, camera. It's absolutely useless when im going to type in messenger and screen dimms so i can see it worse. Also i am watching youtube and screen dimms. I cannot understand what is this supposed to mean such nonsense feature.
I want to ask you if somebody of you has faced with this and if he figured it out somehow.
Ive already written to honor support , they answered nothing to the piont.
I was figuring out that when i turn adaptive brightness on, this doesnt do, the screen doesnt dimm when i open any app, but adaptive brightnes randomly fades my brightness setting after switching off the screen.
All i would like is what attributes i have to set to some app that i dont want to dimm. I cannot find this out.
Any suggestions thankfull.

"Online videos and games consume a significant amount of power and may cause your phone to heat up. As a result, your phone automatically decreases the screen brightness to prevent your phone from overheating. The brightness will return to normal when your phone cools down.
Some apps automatically adjust the screen brightness for better readability. For example, when you open Contacts or Messaging, the screen brightness is adjusted automatically even when automatic brightness is disabled."
" This function cannot be disabled"
"The screen changes color in direct sunlight.
When the ambient brightness reaches a certain level (such as direct sunlight), the screen brightness and contrast are automatically increased for better readability. This feature cannot be disabled."

Yes and this is bad. Something like answer from honor support. But also messenger goes darker and it has nothing to do with overheating. When i switch on the adaptive brightness this dimming doesnt do with any app. Also with adaptive brightness off some apps do not dim as if they'd have an exception of this. It is very bad that it cant be disabled this makes this phone completely useless for everyday use because readability goes worse when it goes darker.

Same here
Yup, I have the same. I just keep the Automatic adjustment "on" so it stopes dimming. Which is anti-intuitive. You would expect this dimming beeing caused by that Automatic setting not the opposite. Let's hope they will sort it soon.

Unfortunately its the special feature implemented in firmware called "eye care" as they replied me from honor support. It needs to tell them to switch it off at [email protected]

It seems that Velis Auto Brightness app from Google Play Store does the trick (Honor 10 Stock Pie).
Settings:
Automatic brightness: ON
track light in graph: ON
SETTINGS: (advanced):
Automatic brightness: ON
Disable system handler: ON
Start when screen turns ON: ON
Interactive notification: ON
All other settings off/default.
When you turn off the screen and turn it on, go for the first time in notification area and set your desired value in Velis.
Turn off automatic handling of this app in battery section (app start).

Hello, that setting in notification area really worked for me, thanks. But the slider Is in steps 66% , 73%, 80% I cannot adjust it per one % but nevermind, at last this helped me.
edit: after one day testing I noticed that it doesnt work. It still dimms the apps.

Hi, it's a pitty that it does not work.. Maybe Velis app is killed by app manager? As i wrote, try to disable any battery management for Velis app. Do you see after that 1 day Velis slider in notification area? If not, it is likely killed by system app manager.
And yes, it is true that the screen can be adjusted only bys steps.
In my case more than a week for honor 10 (EMUI 9) with Velis and still no any screen dimming issues in any app.

Enable the permission and set brightness to 100%.
Then select brightness in phone to auto and restart the phone.
Then select desired brightness.

Turn on Advanced visual effect.
I used to have the same problem too. Simply just go to setting>smart accessibility>accessibility>Advanced visual effect>turn on.
If it doesn't work go to developer option and make sure the window animation, transition animation and animation duration are set to 1x.
To enable the developer option, go to setting>about phone>build number>tap until it shows u are now a developer.
Hope it does help u.

Before we can fix that via ADB but now is not possible. If anyone has a better fix please share

Browser Screen brightness is not maxed (browser locked-setting)

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was missed. I am the type of user who likes to use the phone at full brightness, as it does not seem to have a huge negative impact on my battery life in day to day operations.
I was looking carefully at the browser on the Galaxy and wondered why the whites looked so dimmed in comparison to other parts of the operating system.
I had already done the following:
1. Turned the OS brightness all the way up.
2. Turned browser brightness all the way up.
3. Disabled the screen power saving mode.
I then downloaded a flashlight application and maxed it to 100% while switching to the browser with the Home key multitask, and going back and forward between the flashlight app and the browser app, it is very clear that the browser is not pushing max brightness. Even though the brightness settings on both the OS and the browser are maxed, it seems as though the browser is capped to 80% brightness or so.
My friend also verified this during his test run, as he has just bought the Samsung Vibrant and noticed the same thing. I understand many will just leave the auto-brightness setting on, but that's not really addressing the issue here.
Is there a way for an XDA developer to correct this issue through a patch or ROM?
thanks
I checked with the shell and when brightness is at 100% it has an absolute value of 255, the same when I'm at the browser set with full brightness, so it seems it's working as it should.
You can check it with this command
Code:
cat /sys/devices/platform/s3cfb/spi_gpio.3/spi3.0/blacklight/s5p_bl/actual_brightness

I don't know, I experience the same thing as the OP. Everything's bright, except when surfing the web.
Same issue here. I use Opera in bright daylight.

If you go in to the brightness settings there is an option at the very bottom called "Power saving mode". I'm not sure if that is having any effect on the browser.
Thanks for the numbers, but I gotta say, just comparing the flashlight app and hitting the back arrow to toggle to the browser, it is beyond obvious that the browser is not as bright as the flashlight application. I used google with it's white background and zoomed in to an area that was just white to avoid other distractions.
This is the best way to test since there will be no transition in between the application toggle and you see the screen dim easily.
As indicated by my original post, I have also turned off the power saving feature so that is not a concern. Someone did say that the Behold 2 has the same cap for their browser and that this is a samsung specific setting that's probably there to save battery. I haven't been able to confirm it on that phone yet but just give the flashlight test a chance and you'll see.
oh one last thing i noticed is, when going from the browser back to the flashlight, sometimes the flashlight app is also dimmed at the same level brightness as the browser, but tapping the screen 'wakes' up the app into full brightness.
TGalaxy browser brightness
To me it's very obvious that the browser is dimmed down, I'd say more than to 80%... Having google as the default homepage couldn't make it more obvious when opening the browser! Samsung obviously thought that no one with a decent eyesight will buy their phone. Or anyone who feels capable of managing their phone's battery life themselves.
It's just one of those niggling things that had to be included, lessening the experience of an otherwise rather breathtaking phone. Another one is the compulsory vibration when charging is finished - makes me wonder when others, or the developers for that matter, charge their smartphones! I charge them overnight, and of course every night... or at least used to, as with the Galaxy S, I can no longer sleep.
I think I've been through every menu possible to change these couple of features, with no success... if anyone knows anything, please share.
It happens on the dim-side, too
I have the same problem, but on the dim side. The browser brightens the screen when it comes on if you have the brightness set to zero. I like it dimmed all the way at night if I'm reading in bed when the lights are out and my partner is asleep, but it keeps turning it up so it's pretty bright in the pitch dark. Arrgh. It's my phone, can't I set it the way I want? Grr.
I've read that there are limitations on how much the screen dims and brightens unless you have a rooted phone and you use an app that's not built into the OS.
I rooted mine and there are some configuration apps that will set it to 0, but I think the built-in operating system slider doesn't go all the way to zero and might not go all the way to 255 when you slide it to the very edges. Supposedly it only goes to 10 on the low side from the notes on some apps.
So, probably it's a similar limitation on the slider for the screen brightness in the browser. We're probably stuck with this problem until someone writes an app that lets you change this setting to any value between 0 and 255 since the default sliders don't allow the low side and I'm guessing not the high side either.
So . . . any android developers out there, it would be cool if you could make an app to change this setting if it's available programatically somewhere.
I tried the "Dimmer" and "Brightness!" apps from the market. But none of them 'Keep' the brightness at the minimum always.

How to Keep the brightness always minimum?

Despite doing this manually in the settings, occasionally the brightness goes up due to unknowns. Is there a way to keep the brightness always low?

If you swipe along the notification bar at the top you can increase or decrease the screen brightness.
"it's a feature not a bug"
i hated it myself till i read somewhere that (only if you deactivate auto-brightness) you can increase/decrease the brightness by swiping left/right on your notification panel! it happens often by mistake when you pull it down ... thats your problem
in the new froyo rom's this is no longer the case so now i use auto-mode and wait will this "feature" is no more

I never noticed this actually.. Also ensure though in the browser you have set brightness manually there
have the same problem, but i find the auto brigthness setting saves my battery more rather than accidentally turning it maximum brightness
I tried the "Dimmer" and "Brightness!" apps from the market. But none of them 'Keep' the brightness at the minimum always.
I've noticed 3 places where the brightness can be set - 1st being the web browser, 2nd the actual settings option, and 3rd the video player. Currently, I disabled the auto brightness control and I've set all 3 places to 1 step above minimum. Seems to work for me.
Also, I have a widget on the home screen to set/monitor the brightness level, it's called 'Brightness Widget by Stark Technology Inc.'.

Lolipop Screen Brightness

Hi there!
For sometime now I want to move to LP but I find too many things that are missing compare to my current KK.
I'm using Lux Auto Brightness on my current device and on LP it caused so problems (fullscreen overlay, presist notification etc..)
I was wondering how is the stock auto brightness of the LP (if it's any different from the current KK) or is there any alternative for LP to the Lux?
Thanks!
I absolutely love the stock brightness settings. You set a desired screen brightness with the slider and it adapts the screen in a way, so that depending on environment light you perceive the screen at the same brightness u initially set. In my opinion it works really, really well.

What is your opinion about the brightness compare to KK?
I recall seeing some very poor performance form the stock brightness management in sunlight.

Stock auto-brightness (erm, I mean "adaptive brightness") sucks on Lollipop IMO. It's another example of something that wasn't broken but Google tried to fix it anyway and utterly borked it in the process.
My experience is that it does not "adapt" nearly enough. If I set the slider to the right level in daylight, when I go into a dark room I am blinded. If I set the slider to the right level in a dark room, when I go into sunlight I cannot see the screen. Frankly I cannot see the screen adapting at all. If it is adapting then it's in within a very narrow range. I even did a software repair to see if that would solve it, but it didn't.
I've not used Lux, but I've not heard good things about it in Lollipop and am loathed to install an app to do something that previously was handled fin by the OS. Stock auto-brightness worked very well for me in KK.

I'm using Lux on LP and don't have any issues. The persistent notification can be set so it's only visible in the swiped down notification view, but not perpetually visible in the notification bar (in Lux settings, set notification visibility to lowest priority). What do you mean by "fullscreen overlay?"

I just faceplamed myself so hard
I think I found the problem; when battery saver mode is enabled, when it kicks in, it will set your screen brightness to a certain fixed level. But when you charge the phone again and battery saver mode deactivates, it will not automatically re-enable adaptive brightness, so you need to re-enable it manually.
My experience was that kitkat was better on the screen brightness. Lollipop works fine and adapts well, except that in bright sunlight it won't turn up the brightness as much as kitkat did.

Setting Screen Dim Amount When Inactive?

I would like to use my fire tablet as an alarm panel. Found a few apps that display full screen web pages, that works good. In the development options I turned on "stay awake" so the panel could always be on. After like 30 seconds of no using the screen just barley dims. I would like to dim the screen as much as possible after no use. Anyway to override this amount? I found several apps that can set the dim amount, but just by a schedule, not by inactivity. Or even a web browser app that can control the dimming when not in use?
Thanks a bunch!

Unfortunately, not possible on this device. Minimum brightness level set in kernel (possibly a panel/controller limitation) with no known workarounds (via Xposed). To date this is the only device I own that exhibits this behavior.
Thanks for that info Davey. Maybe I'll see if I can create my own app with a webview that will dim when not touched for a period of time. Since it seems an app can control the dim level. Thanks again.

Ah - so you are not experiencing any dimming vs dissatisfied with the minimum level. Couple thoughts:
- might be able to use an automation tool like Macrodroid or Edge (w/Xposed) to dim the screen on a particular action like last user action or time of day; Tasker (a fan favorite) can do this as well but is overkill for your needs IMO
- blue light filters can emulate deeper dimming levels but you won't realize the associated battery saving as backlight level remains untouched; the again you device is likely plugged in when used as an alarm clock
Unfortunately Macrodroid and Tasker can not listen for inactivity/idle events. Sounds like an Android limitation: http://macrodroid.freeforums.org/inactivity-period-as-trigger-t86.html
Not sure what Edge (w/Xposed) is, not finding that?
Thanks Davey!

Edge is a module for Xposed Framework. You might also consider a different trigger sequence than inactivity/idle, eg: touch, activity atart or time of day. Might need to get a little creative with the thinking

App that uses brightness toggles?

Hi,
Not sure where the correct place is for this, so thought that I'd put it here.
I am looking for an app that controls brightness. I like the brightness of my phones to be dialed down to around 40%. I find it most comfortable for my eyes. Yet when it is bright out, I need to make the screen brighter. This means that I need to go in and manually adjust the brightness. I don't like to have the phone set to automatically adjust the brightness.
I'd like to find an app that allows adjusting brightness by icon. I don't want one that has one icon that toggles through a bunch of preset brightness levels. Instead, I want an app that can have different icons for different brightness levels. That way, if I wanted to toggle the brightness to 60%, I could tap an icon that does that. Then I could have an icon set for 30% to set it back.
Anyone know of an app that does this?

Lux, if properly configured, could do that for you.
I think I understand what you're going for. I use Power Toggles (Dev: Painless Apps), and one of the toggles on the widget is for brightness and I have it set to 3 settings when I touch it; 20%, 40% and 100%. It's not possible to set each new brightness widget for individual brightness presets, unfortunately, but I don't see how it would be difficult to just make some predetermined settings for your brightness.
By now you should have a pretty firm idea on what level of brightness you prefer throughout your day so maybe you can use this app and have 2, 3 or more presets. It's really simple to use, I have it set to 3 settings and touching the widget to get to the brightness I want at that moment is super quick and not difficult at all.
You can see in the screenshot I use the widget at the top on my home page. Brightness is among the other toggles I use on a regular basis. Much quicker to turn on and off things, IMO. It's right there on my home screen so I don't have to pull my notification window down. I hope this helps.
I just use Auto Brightness setting. I set the brightness slider at 40% and the phone will auto-adjust the screen to keep it at a relative 40 indoors and outdoors.
I think this is what you're looking for:
