Just upgrade my Netflix plan to 4k/HDR one and found that HDR titles play out really dark. Some of them almost unwatchable! (like some scene in Sabrina or Bright)
Is there any way to disable HDR or do something about the brightness?

As a "proper" camera, the unit seems to be missing some things I'd expect by default. How do you turn off auto-focus an focus manually... taking pictures at night - the stars etc - invariably the images are out of focus.
Also auto-exposure control - you can turn that off easily for images but for videos there seems to be no way to turn off the auto exposure - which makes the end product look very amateurish.
Finally whenever I go out at night, the LCD dims, I can't seem to stop that and it dims WAY too much?
Any ideas chaps?

It appears that you cannot turn Auto Focus off but you might be able to find a third party camera app in the Play Store that allows this
Settings for video are sparse it's true and again there is no control over the exposure etc.
I didn't notice the LCD dimming, The camera doesn't have an auto brightness LCD so I am not sure what's causing that. Turning the brightness up from the drop down notification bar is easy enough though.
Sorry these are not the answers you are looking for but we have to remind ourselves that this is a premium camera not a pro camera however.

Thanks for that. I will indeed look out for such an app. Agree with you that it's not a "pro" camera - but for example - on the iPhone who's video handling is equally dire, there's an app that completely compensates by letting you shoot 16:9 with auto exposure, auto focus and auto-white all turned off at the touch of a button. This camera really does need such controls to make it useful for anything other than "party" videos. Its a big disappointment that Samsung would miss off such obvious controls having taken the effort to make a special camera app in the first place.
there are only 2 focus modes as far as I can tell, auto and macro.
night sky shots have worked fine for me using auto focus though.
I made some nice pictures of a crescent moon without a tripod or manual focus, and it was sharp enough to see the craters on the moon.
using manual camcorder under expert you can set the brightness, and white balance for video recording manually(wb is under the settings gear)
lcd dimming: settings gear - general - display brightness
the settings gear is hidden under the > and the expert mode can be accessed through the mode button.
don't be so afraid to dig a bit through settings.
I often see complaints about missing/misbehaving features in apps when it's all available through a settings screen.
EDIT: apprentice: auto brightness works using the camera sensor, so it only works while in the camera app.
Thanks for that - so solved the LCD brightness, but I've gone through all the settings and cannot figure out how to turn off the auto-focus or the auto-brightness. Put your hand in front of the lens - and both kick in whether you want them or not... any ideas anyone?

As far as I can tell in camcorder mode, the one thing you can set - brilliance- is only relative brilliance - the exposure still bobs up and down like a YoYo.... making the movies look terrible - surely guys there has to be a way to turn this off?

I recently downloaded a few mkv HDR files to the phone, but when playing the files, it didn't activate the HDR feature (washed out colors and bad contrasts) in VLC or the native Samsung video app. How come and how can I watch HDR content? (It does work on YouTube HDR videos...)

HDR content is HIT AND MISS. Some will look fine after adjusting the brightness and contrast, some devices require Auto Brightness and Iris to be turned off. and sometimes a codec can fix the problem....
Have you tried using KODI and adjusting the hardware and software codec settings?
But honestly, HDR on a 6 inch screen isn't doing you any good. 1080p Will consume far less data and will look the same on that tiny screen. Unless you're using HDMI out to a screen over 50 inches, i don't see the need...
HDR has nothing to do with the resolution (and the fact that you should be watching it on big screens). HDR is about dynamic range and the color range which is perfect to watch on a high-end screen of a premium smartphone display like Galaxy S10.
Hello there.
It seems that HDR is not working in YouTube or Netflix although i get the HDR logo in Quality settings (YouTube) or next to the movie duration (Netflix).
The brightnes does not seem to change like it should even though the slider is on maximum and the image does not 'pop' for example in bright scenes.
I have a Xiaomi Mi8 to compare it to and side by side there is a huge difference and the Mi9T pro should have a slightly better panel. It just does not look like HDR mode is enabled on the panel itself.
I have noticed the same thing on 3 other devices like mine.
I am on MIUI Global 10.3.4.0 on Android 9.
Has anyone else noticed that or is it just me?

I have noticed the same things and maybe there is something wrong here as I have seen in other phones that reading mode does get disabled.

I've noticed that my display's brightness automatically increases and gets oversaturated when viewing videos on the youtube and twitch app in fullscreen. When the videos are playing in portrait mode, display is normal but once the video is switched to landscape mode the oversaturation happens and this doesn't disappear even if you switch back to portrait mode...Display reverts back to normal only after exiting the video.
This effect seems to be subtle in lifelike videos but becomes really apparent in gameplay and other animated videos. The twitch streams look so cartoonish that it is impossible to enjoy gameplay streams on my mobile. Fullscreen videos from Chrome browser dont seem to be affected by this.
Is anyone else affected by this? Is there any solution?
Two things I recommend disabling if you encounter this:
- Under display, go to "screen colors/pallet" and change it to whichever color temperature you prefer (automatic is enabled by default)
- Check if you have "reading mode" enabled

I've already turn off the reading mode and choose screen colors to automatic but its still seems so oversaturated or its just software bug?. But if iam watching it on 1080p its just like hdr video
I was recommending you to disable automatic colors, that's why I believe colors are too saturated, you can change temperature too if you want. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

You can check Settings - Display - Adaptive brightness. If it's enabled and general screen brightness is automatically changed in different places, then it could be a YouTube app setting it issue.

Go to settings > Advanced features > video brightness
and activate youtube

I think what he meant is in older HDR phones while playing HDR videos, it used to automatically set a brightness (only while playing the HDR video) which isn't happening in the S21U even for me! Maybe it's a new thing but ya there's a change
