Bricked MI8 after TWRP Restore - Xiaomi Mi 8 Questions & Answers

Hello,
I have a China MI8 which came with bootloader unlocked.
I installed TWRP and Xiaomi.eu beta rom yesterday.
This morning, I wanted to switch to Xiaomi.eu stable. So I've done a FULL backup and flashed the rom.
A few minutes after, I wanted to get back on beta rom, so I full restored my backup with TWRP.
I can't handle why, but now my phone is bricked : no fastboot, no recovery and only detected as "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008" by my computer.
What can I do ? I have to use the EDL way?
Thank you

Congratulations! My friend made that mistake the same to you :fingers-crossed:
Somebody said that there was no ARB on Eu Rom and you could upgrade and downgrade anytime. But my friend did the same like you, had backuped then restored, Brick Confirmed so he went to the store, paid some money for them to fix it! I think with Eu rom you could downgrade but dont backup or restore anything from the previous one. Just make a nice and clean wipe everything. That's a really big lesson :good:

I've got my MI8 unlocked using MiFlash 2018.05.28. I needed an EDL auth, so I contacted this guy : https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78140755&postcount=42
For 20 $ He logged with his account on my computer (with teamviewer) and launched the flash without lock the bootloader.
Today my device is running the latest Xiaomi.eu build

Hard bricked Mi 8

Hello,
I have hard bricked my Mi 8 doing that :
1. install TWRP 3.2.1 (successfull)
2. backup of original phone setup (everything was checked)
3. trying to flash xiaomi.eu MIUI 10 (latest realease)
4. booting (unsuccessfull, not bootloop but after MI android logo doesn't boot up)
5. so i decided to restore my backup (just data unchecked)
6. press reboot (and it didn't reboot)
The actual situation :
When i try to press the power button the phone doesn't boot, If i try to go into recovery mode it doesn't boot and same for fastboot mode.
The screen is unresponsive (no backlight) and it doesn't vibrate. When i connect the phone to my computer it is automatically recognized as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM5) which correspond to the EDL mode (i think).
I tried :
1. miflash (using 2 different fastboot china dev rom found on the XDA recovery post for mi 8) --> the mi 8 is automatically recognized as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM5) without using deepflash cable or pressing any button and I got an error : "ERROR: Only nop and sig tag can be recevied before authentication."
EDIT : I updated my Miflash tool and now i have to connect to my Mi account BUT i have to be EDL authorized by Xiaomi to flash repair my phone
2. deepflash cable (but it changes nothing)
3. mi flash pro : it open miflashtool
4. mi pc suite : nothing
I don't understand why it is bricked considering i just restored a working setup but it the most hard brick i have ever seen.
If someone can help me or suggest an option i'll give it a try and keep you updated.
EDIT : i understand now , it is due to the Anti-Rollback system that xiaomi implemented in their rom (we can't downgrade) + the necessity to have an EDL authorized account
Thanks you
PS : i can post MiFlash log if it can help
And with mi pcsuite?

Didn't try it but i was thinking this software wasn't updated since 2015. I just see right now that the 3.2 beta is released and Mi 8 is supported.
Thanks for that, i'll give it a try tomorrow as i can't do this that night.
I'll keep you updated.
Did you format data, your backup... Was it global or chinese?

My initial ROM was the vendor rom (Mi global store on aliexpress) and i think it is a fake "official global rom" on MIUI 9.5 so a modified chinese rom.
The xiaomi.eu ROM was the MIUI 10 8.7.26 for Mi 8.
Before every flash (or restoration) of ROM I format DATA, CACHE and DALVIK.
btw i didn't format data, cache and dalvik after the restoration. I just press the reboot option of TWRP and it never booted again.
Omg. I'm afraid. My mi8 came with global 9.5 china (in facto it's chinese version) and i've put MIUI 10 beta 8.7.12. In 1 week I'll be able to unlock it and put global rom (my language is portuguese). But after reading this, i'm not motivated. Sad. Hope you'll can fix It. Crossed fingers here!

Yeah it is weird... that's the first time i see such a problem on an android (and Xiaomi device).
Actually you can flash TWRP (I suggest v3.2.1) without any problem but backup/restore didn't worked for me and flash xiaomi.eu didn't worked (but it didn't bricked my mi 8).
EDIT : I have some "news" but i'm not sure about that. I think there is something about the anti-rollback system : as i flashed MIUI 10 and restored back to MIUI 9.5 (downgrade) it activated the ARB system and hard bricked my phone (maybe).
I checked others forum and a guy named MyReghalia on en.miui.com forums have EXACTLY the same problem as me and he didn't figured it out with that problem.
BTW maybe with an EDL authorized account i'll be able to flash via Miflash but find someone who has an authorized EDL Mi account to borrow or EDL authorize my account is an other problem....
Did u flash the right recovery.img on the mi8?if so what partitions u restore?faulty recovery?....is weird i have never see ql9008 mode unless the recovery is broken and restore an partiton in the wrong slot
You need to try the EDL method

Yep, i flashed the v3.2.1 -0611- for Mi 8 availible on the XDA forums. It worked and i had access to the custom recovery.
When I backuped/restored I checked all the options availible and didn't touch anything about partitions. Maybe it is a faulty recovery but actually i have some clues because, IMO also it is weird that my device is automatically recognized as ql9008 mode. (BTW it seems to be a well known problem on redmi note 5/pro)
I checked on diverse forums and there is the ARB (Anti-RollBack system) that xiaomi put inside their rom and doesn't allow to downgrade android version or miui firmware unless a brick occurs. The only way I found to get back my phone is to contact xiaomi repair services and asked them to repair my phone because they have authorized EDL mi account (it is something pretty new, before we had acces to flash in EDL mode without account, now it is regulated by xiaomi....)

Thanks you but actually i don't need to do the test point method because my phone is already and automatically in EDL emergency mode.
BTW it is the good way to do it but unfortunately i don't have any EDL auth account...
With everything i read on different forums i'm pretty sure that rom development will be extremely difficult until a way is found to get around this ARB system and EDL authorization account that doesn't allow to repair our bricked xiaomi phone.
Very bad they ask for an account even with emergency EDL repairs.
Hello, my mi8 I have it more than a month ago and came with the Chinese ROM, then update from the phone to MIUI 10 Chinese beta, then using Miflash to rom.eu MIUI 10 and then again through Miflash to the last global 9.5.14.0 and I have not had any problem PPR what I think At least in my case that Xiaomi has not activated the Antirollback in the Mi8, forgive my English, greetings

Ahhh I forgot, before doing all that had unlocked the bottloader through Miunloock and the last ROM that had flashed the global I forgot to unmark that blocked the device and the phone was in Bootloop, so I went back to unlock the bootloader and Ripped smoothly

There are only 2 ways to bring back to life the MI8 with brick
1.-Xiaomi Authorized Account (Miflash)
2.-Latest version of China stable in my case I need the 9.5.14.0 and there is only the 9.5.11.0 for Flash by Mipcsuite 3.0 China
(Mipcsuite 3.0 Chinese version allows flash with blocked bootloader)

Mipcsuite does not allow flashing via EDL.
I have the same issue before and I got the solution form miuieu forum.
After installing miui 10 from miuieu, you need to format data. Then bring up to home screen successfully.
Hi ,
Actually the only way to get back a hard-bricked Mi8 ( no fastboot , no recovery) is through MiflashTool with an EDL authorized account , there isn't any way to do this because MiPcsuite doesn't recognize an hard bricked device.
By the way it seems that this problem is not well known on XDA forum I strongely invite you to speak about that on these forums (BE AWARE) and to take a look at xiaomi forum, where it seems a bigger problem than here (a LOT of people, from India , China and everywhere around the world are in the same boat...).
The problem begun with the note 5/pro (you will find more about that on this device's forums)
Also, i returned back my Mi8 because of the xiaomi's politics about the liberty to self repair (software) our phone and i get to oneplus which allows us to do whatever we want...
Good Luck and peace

I am facing the same problem. It's driving me crazy!

Please help me revive my dead K20 pro! :(

Hey guys, I’ve purchased a k20 pro 6/128 variant here in Trinidad and Tobago from Let’s Talk phone company which imports phones and sell it here in Trinidad and Tobago. No one else sells the device here in my country.
When I opened my phone and started using it, I saw that it was the fake global rom which was installed on it. So I came onto here to try to flash the china firmware on it, which I did. After flashing the firmware on it, i installed twrp and wiped everything, data + cache + Dalvik Cache + System, then I flashed the EU firmware on it. After successfully flashing it I flashed magisk and some modules on it, and the phone worked GREAT! Then one day while using it the phone just shut down just like that and never booted back up. It stayed on the boot screen and did nothing!
So I tried reflashing the Chinese firmware with miflash, but this time I Accidentally RELOCKED bootloader, but when I first purchased the phone, the bootloader was already UNLOCKED. Miflash successfully flashed the chinese firmware v10.3.8.0 and the phone booted. I was RELIEVED! But after using it for a while, the phone started freezing! And their was a problem with the front camera! Somehow my front camera won't open properly, it kept saying "Can't open front camera, please calibrate".
And when I press Calibrate, popup cam goes up and down 3 times in a row and says "Can't calibrate".
So I went and request to unlock the bootloader and waited 168 hours, and in that 168 hours I left the phone untouched because it kept crashing and never boot back up unless if I go into recovery and wipe data. So I left the phone untouched for a whole week! Yesterday the waiting period came to an end and FINALLY I unlocked the bootloader! When I opened back up miflash I ACCIDENTALLY LOCKED BOOTLOADER AGAIN!!!! :’( Now Mi unlock is saying that I need to wait 30 DAYS TO UNLOCK BOOTLOADER BEFORE I CAN TRY TO FIX MY PHONE AGAIN! Please help me. Is there any way to flash the firmware on a locked bootloader? i dont care which firmware it is, once my phone is working again.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated!
Only solution is to enter to edl mode by test point but its too risky or to get a mi account with edl authorization, wait till the end of 30 days and dont make the same error for 3 time.

guess i'll have to wait a whole month then before i can use the phone. Thanks anyway
1.Go to fastboot. try flash latest chineese fastbootrom.
doesnt work?
Then you only have choice for EDL mode flash.
But edl mode requires authentification anyway which in most case you do not own..
we need something solid edl flash method.. this is common&biggest xiaomi problem

Here are the list of things i've tried thus far:
1- Tried flashing china fastboot rom 10.3.8.0 with Miflash. No luck.
2- Tried unlocking bootloader with Mi unlock. Have to wait the 30 day period.
3- Tried unlocking bootloader with fastboot commands. Didn't work.
4- Tried flashing LR twrp and unofficial twrp, No luck as well.
I've sent an Email to [email protected] couple hours ago. Waiting to hear from them.
As for edl mode, i've no idea what it is or how to even start. If someone can guide me as to what to do, i'll try it. Appreciate all the feedback and help from y'all

EDL mode will not work untill you have a EDL Authorized account
I had already tried and it was a bad idea to open the back cover just stick with unlocking bootloader
EDL test point will not work because xaiomi made because no body should buy Chinese Varient phone and flash global rom ,and I don't understand exactly why xaiomi did this with EDL and bootloader
Opened up the back of my phone, found the edl mode test point, miflash recognizes the device and begins flashing then i get this error "cannot receive hello packet"

I have some ideas but I have not verified them. You can try to replace the recovery.img in china firmware for twrp and then fastboot flash on edl mode。if it can be done, dnot star it just into twrp and formatted data.
I will test this method on my old mi5 a little later.
To fix the front camera problem you'll have to flash the persist.img file of the 10.3.8 into the persist partition. It worked for me several times.
I accidentaly lock my bootloader, too, but I was able to unlock it right away
Don't worry mate, I had the same issue.
See this thread:

Miflash only works on an unlocked bootloader. It appears that you have a Chinese Model and you just did what was supposed to be avoided. You should get accustomed to Miflash moving forward. Never use Flash_All_Lock while cross flashing China/Global roms. You'll have to wait to unlock your Bootloader now and post that flash the China rom to get back. If any time you wish to move to the India rom, either use a twrp recovery or just use Flash_All while using the fastboot image which should eventually avoid locking the bootloader

1. if you can still enter fastboot mode, there is a possibility that you can do TWRP flashing again (the TWRP version must be correct so that the data on the cellphone can be read properly) / Flashing from the PC (if you are lucky, the flashing will work properly without any problem or you can bypass the bootloader locked using software or something else). [make sure ROM version must be appropriate because this is very crucial]
2. You can try using the test point method (EDL / Emergency Download Mode) [This method is usually used if your K20Pro is constrained by Hardbrick due to ARB4] , but this method requires you to open the case / body behind your K20Pro. and I cannot guarantee that the flashing process will succeed easily because in some cases if the K20Pro is detected damage / error due to ARB4, then you are required to have an Authorized Mi Account. I might be able to help you remotely, if you agree with the risks & requirements in the flashing process (I can lend my account, but it's not free).
Hi All, I did the same thing - whoever build the UI for MiFlash should be shot - why default that selection to something that will be undesirable!!?
Anyway, i tried to flash indian rom and forgot to set to Clean All, it locked the bootloader.
So i now have redmi recovery and Fastboot options only on phone.
Have tried fastboot + miflash but all options (now with Chinese rom) - says Erase Boot Error.
Tried MiAssistant + Mi PC Suite - it is not detecting the phone in either MiAssistant recovery mode nor Fastboot mode. what is weird is the phone and connector animation on phone is correctly depicting when it is plugged in/unplugged. But the PC suite isnt detecting the device.
Soft bricked - *sigh.... any help will be greatly appreciated from the community
BTW i am more worried that the phone will run out of battery and never wake up once battery drains completely as it is in bootloop into Redmi recovery and can't be turned off (someone tell me how!?) - I don't see the phone respond to charging in any state... : (
Can you still reach fastboot? If so you can unlock phone again and flash TWRP using ADB. After that boot straight into TWRP and connect it to your computer, internal SD storage should then automatically mount. Drag and drop ROM .zip into internal storage, use TWRP file manager to move it out of the data folder and do a default wipe using TWRP. Then flash .zip ROM (for example xiaomi.eu stable) and you should be back in business. Please let me know if you need any files like working recovery image and further instructions.
I had some trouble with my TWRP recovery yesterday, flashed it on unlocked bootloader with Chinese stable ROM installed, on reboot out of fastboot it boots straight into ROM and overwrites the TWRP recovery with default recovery. I fixed it by flashing recovery again, boot straight into it and flash xiaomi.eu stable, now recovery is TWRP and does not get overwritten.

Some great ideas - Just tried to unlock bootloader - This device came pre-unlocked so the device is tied to the seller's account.
I have unlock permission - but unlocker say device is not bound to my account matching my assumptions - anyone know what's the best way to re-claim ownership? Especially when I can't get into ROM at all?

My comment was meant for OP but I hoped it would help you as well! I am personally not well informed about the Xiaomi / Redmi ownership situation when the seller unlocked the phone.. maybe you can contact them and get a corresponding password to the account, it has been the solution I have seen offered here. Maybe the emergency flash solution from Robbo.5000 works?
I just got this phone a week now and was only able to unlock and flash yesterday, I was aware of the ownership problem thanks to this forum so I bought the sealed CN version. Hope you figure it out!
Thanks guys. I am going for the Test Point solution - have made contact with the Russian tech the others did and made an appointment. I just have to pretend to be Jerry Rig before then and open her up! Fingers crossed!

You need yo flash magisk after you flash twrp if you want to run regular miui, to prevent it from overwriting the recovery. Its the same on poco and all xiaomi phones

Did you flash the global rom on an existing running Chinese rom or on an empty device (formatted)? Just for myself cuz I'm not sure whether to unlock and then unable to relock. Thanks.

1. if you can still enter fastboot mode, there is a possibility that you can do TWRP flashing again (the TWRP version must be correct so that the data on the cellphone can be read properly) / Flashing from the PC (if you are lucky, the flashing will work properly without any problem or you can bypass the bootloader locked using software or something else).

Could you please point me to the person you have contacted?
I'm in EDL for about two weeks now, unable to solve it by different means (seller sais 'send it back', which I'm not goong to do; S-unlock has the service unavailable, even though I've paid them and the guy I contacted there tried through TW to no avail, waiting for a 'money back' now)..

MI 9 Bricked After trying to change CN rom to Global rom.

Hi Guys, I hope someone of you could help me out.
Recently a Chinese friend of mine gave me an MI 9 as a present. But unfortunately they ROM of the new phone was the CN version.
I found a way to change the ROM by doing the unlock bootloader and flashing TRWP, after that, I downloaded the MI9_Global_V9.5.30_vendor_fw_flash, went back to the Recovery and wiped the "Delvik, cache, SYSTEM and Data. When I was trying to install the rom I got an error telling me the Global rom file was corrupt and restarted the cellphone.
The problem is I am stuck in the Fastboot loop, can't access the recovery and my computer don't recognize the cellphone.
I know I ****ed it up, I was wondering if I can revert that or did I just lost a phone.
Thank you Guys.

Hi,
How did you unlock your bootloader?
It asks for binding Mi account and it's not possible when your phone is bricked.
Yeah, the rule is simple. If it boots into fastboot, it can be recovered. Just flash the global you want with the MI flash tool and the fastboot file.

Guys I am too stupid for this,
I flashed the fastboot global rom in my phone with MI flash but locked it in the end (can't believe I am that retard), now I believed I have bricked it for good.
Now I can't flash the correct fastboot ROM with miflash because I have locked the bootloader while trying to flash the Global ROM. I am at the fastboot loop again.
Can I do something now or I just have a expensive paper holder?
Thank you guys.

flash another official firmware on a locked bootloader BY XIAOMI TOOL V2 https://www.xiaomitool.com/v2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMkDAxiDdKs&t=10s
Here’s something VERY important before you flash or update the ROM.
1. Xiaomi Phones manufactured for Chinese market are not able to run MIUI Global ROM.
2. Xiaomi Phones manufactured for Global markets are not able to run MIUI China ROM.
We highly recommend you to buy Xiaomi Phones via official or authorized sales channels and double check the system information before flashing or updating.

Hi guy,
Same thing happened to me, I felt very stupid, but it was on a MI 8 SE.
According to my experience, only there's a way to solve it and it's booting on EDL mode.
You'll need an authorized Mi account to flash the original ROM.
There's a complete guide on c . mi . com named [Guide] [All in One] MIUI Flashing Guide: Unbrick, EDL Method / Locked Bootloader, Unlock Bootloader, More, I can't post the url because I'm a new user
Best wishes!

I can't use MITOOL because the USB DEBUGGING isn't enabled, is there a way to do it in the fastboot loop?
Thank you
It should recongnize with no problems.. Just check if you have the ADB drivers and try unlocking the bootloader and then flashing the Rom with the miflash tool. Still, if you have access to fastboot, things should be fine! Don't panic hahha

Read carefully and report
1. Try to hold down the buttons vol down and power, see if : fastboot devices sees it. If so XiaoMi Tool will restore it. If not do the same try recovery vol up + power. Do adb devices and see if anything shows up. Worst case you'll have to open the phone up and connect the EDL pins together and it will flash anything. I use minimal ADB and Fastboot phone plugged via USB cable into the computer and run those commands.
2. Fully bricks their device here is the unbrick factory method
https://c.mi.com/thread-1479882-1-0.html
that's connecting EDL pins with the phone case removed for a phone that doesn't boot at all
3. https://youtu.be/8mW0JzKow7E
here's the exact EDL test point required on Mi9
if you can't boot or recognize the device at all via fastboot or ADB. If this doesn't work nothing will...
But it will work, that's what the factory does. Obviously the last resort.

Mi 9 bricked - Locked bootloader & MiUI version can't be installed on this device

Hi all,
I have searched for a solution to this but haven't come across anyone witht the same issue.
I bought a Mi 9 from China which came with the Global rom loaded. I found out that I couldn't use Google Pay unless I rooted with Magisk.
So I went through the process of trying to flash Magisk through fast boot (didn't work - boot loop to recovery) then with TWRP (didn't work - boot to TWRP and freeze).
I then used Miflash to flash the latest global stable version. Unfortunately I didn't notice it was defaulted to "clean all and lock" when I flashed. When the device restarted, it loaded into recovery and was no longer unlocked. The message is "This MIUI version can't be installed on this device". But I can't flash again, because its locked.
I downloaded the MiUnlock app and after running it get the message "Current account is not bound to this device" with instructions to change settings in developer options. But I can't access the developer options because the MIUI isn't loading.
So, yeah. I think I'm in trouble. Any suggestions?
If your device was global version i would say flash fastboot ROM with Mi flash tool or using script flash_all.bat. Then bound your account to your device, then try to unlock recovery. But i red that in some cases Chines version is not so simple, so search, how to flash fastboot ROM on Chines device and if there is some problems with this.
You will need adb and fastboot installed on your pc.
Upd. Man it's all over the internet, just search "This miui version can't be installed on this device". There is a fix with opening the device and so on... but if i was you i would try to contact the seller of the device and ask him to use his account to unlock recovery. My be using teamviewer or similar software.
you bought in china with global rom and it was unlocked already ? because if you tried twrp then the device must be unlocked (bootloader)
then it was a China Version with unlocked bootloader and global rom. you used then the miflash and locked the bootloader again and flashed the global rom...
so you bricked your device....
if found this in an other forum:
"Dear customers, our service provides services in a remote format, if you are from another country .
If you need Mi Authorized EDL Account or you need my services for the restoration of the brick phones and the account is deleted, mi, if you forgot , contact me on my contacts : WhatsApp +7967 777 15 98"

Thanks! I searched as suggested and am trying a fix from the MIUI forum "[FIX] unbrick your BL LOCKED phone without xiaomi id authorization!!!". If that doesn' work I'll go with the team viewer option. Cheers!
