Hello,
Has anyone figured out how to get Edge Lighting and the bubble notification at the top to work with the Android Messages app? It worked fine with the stock Samsung Messages app, but I cannot get it to work with the Android messages app. I changed the setting within Edge Lighting to be enabled and have the Android Messages notification set to urgent, but still no luck.
Appreciate any help!
Thanks
From my experience not all the apps are edge lighting compatible, including gmail, youtube and many other applications... I can not tell you why but I think it has to do with how each app send notifications.
Maybe smarter people can give you more technical explanations ?
Works fine for me, although I use textra as my messaging app. I have Google messages and occasionally switch back to it, but wanted to test it for you
I can't upload a photo now for some reason

Thanks for your reply. I just tried some tests and it seems that the edge lighting works when my screen is on and I receive a text. But it does not work when my "Always On Display" is on. Do you notice that as well?
I have the Verizon version and also use Textra as my SMS app. I just sent a text from the wife's Note 9 and with mine on the AOD, I saw the small popup at the top and she lighting lit up. I tried to grab a screenshot, but apparently doesn't work on AOD.

my edge lighting has the option to work with screen off or on or both..did you check that?
Thank you both for the feedback. I have the setting set to Always (aka both with Screen On or Off) but it does not work with the screen off (AOD).

I wonder what the difference is...crazy
I am having the same issue. Didn't work when screen is off. With or without AOD, it doesn't work at all. Only on screen on I see it no problem.

Glad to know it's not just me. Perhaps this is something that Google can fix with an update? I submitted feedback via the app.

Hi all I was wondering if anyone has found a way or an app/tweak so that notifications don't turn the screen on on the device when receiving notifications such as text messages? I find this highly annoying coming from android devices like the Nexus One and Motorola Milestone. I have found nowhere for this option. I use Handcent as my default sms app and i have the Bell i9000 if that helps. Thanks!

Ok I downloaded tasker but looks very complex. Any idea or heads up for how I can go about the screen not turning on when handcent message comes in?

Thats weird... me its on sms and its highly annoying because I have unlock. Even with the options in Handcent to not turn on the screen it turns on. Tried the default sms app and same thing. Maybe is ADW Launcher? I'll try with the Samsung launcher to see...
ok so it does same thing with Samsung launcher as well. This is annoying! Does everyone else's screen turn on when they receive SMS? I tried noLED as well but screen turns on before it goes to the noLED screen.
Yes, but that's a good thing for me - otherwise I wouldn't know I had a notification if the phone is on my desk?

Yeah that's definitely true. I guess I will stop using the application called Unlock. This app was cool because it gets rid of the lock screen but its annoying to have your screen turn on while its in your pocket and there is no lock. I guess it's something I will have to live with.
Anyone else having trouble with their trackball light not working on non-google apps?
non google apps? as in some 3rd party chat client or something?
if so then it depends on the app if it features the trackball light..

i'm not getting the notification sound for emails, either?
edit: relating to the thread topic, trackball light for sms popup isn't going off like it was with froyo. unrooted stock here.

Well it would be like for chompSMS or SMS Popup, it just wouldn't work.
Same with me, i think Google disabled the trackball light in 2.3.
More likely that the app devs just need to update their apps to work better with GB.
Mine seems to have stopped working altogether.
ya.. now mine is gone too..
edit: I just reinstalled sms popup.. and now everything works just like it was..
idk what's happening.!

I agree, I think the developers of certains apps just haven't updated to gingerbread yet, including Blink.
I've also noticed the flashlight widgets/apps don't work now either
Edit: oh, I'm also stock. Will this finally be the thing that forces me to root? Nah, I'm too big of a wuss (and lazy
Found a solution. Look for "Light Flow" in the Market, works like a charm.
I d/l the free app and it covers a lot, the paid app ($1 ish) allows even more (social apps, etc.).

The "Torch" flashlight widget works fine for me.
Been using Light Flow app for a week for trackball alerts with no issues, but you want the latest market version for GB.

Same.
The LED would blink on boot so I knew it wasn't the LED.
I restored and now my notifications blink repeatedly only if the screen is off. Once I turn my screen on (doesn't matter is I unlock the phone or not, dismiss the notification or not- literally just turn the screen on) the notification LED stops blinking. If my phone screen was on when I get the notification, the LED doesn't blink at all...
Ideas? Solutions?
Other notification works but the stock text message does not. I've reset uninstalled And reinstalled and still nothing. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm wondering if the problem is caused by the phone turning on when i get a message?
Had the same issue. Exchanged gear watch and still resulted the same. Exchanged phone and problem dissappear.

It definitely is a wake lock issue. Go to settings> lockscreen> lock automatically and select "immediately" mine was set to "5 seconds" once I changed this I can read my text messages now.

Where do you see "lock automatically"? I don't see this under Lock Screen options.
It's definitely the lock screen causing this. If (like me) you turned off the lock screen completely, the sms notifications failed to show on the watch.

It is indeed. This is really annoying. I don't like to use a lockscreen, but I want texts to relay to the watch. What's the root cause? Is the lockscreen widget actually relaying the messages? Is it a bug? Would really like a fix that doesn't require me to lock the screen.

That's unusual. Do you have the latest version of Gear Manager? I think one of the updates killed it for me, because I used to get SMS notifications to the Gear fine. I can reproduce it now by switching to no lock screen and back. I'm running 1.4.102802.

The Samsung App store page for Gear Manager will tell you. I recommend you don't update, because you'll most likely lose SMS notifications to the Gear.
Anyone else using Textra on the Note8 not seeing a way to attach files to text messages? I'm a beta tester, so I left some feedback for the Textra devs, but I wanted to check here to see if anyone experienced this and found a resolution:
Next to the text input box, theres a +. Tapping that icon should pull up recent pictures and a bar across the bottom allowing me to select gif, pictures, etc. I used this app on my Note5, and my husband uses it on his Galaxy S6. On the Note8, however, tapping the + only bring up an emoji selection box. I've checked all permissions and did the standard clear cache/reinstall stuff to troubleshoot. Before anyone brings it up, I can go to a picture in my gallery and share that way, just looking for a solution to attaching while still in the Textra app.
i get this when i hit the + on the non beta
Thanks, bub. For some reason my nav bar appears to be covering that bar.

If you turn the phone to landscape then the options to attach pics and gifs show up. It's annoying but it will do for me until a fix is pushed out.
Same issue here. I wish there was a way to get rid of that big ugly nav bar when the keyboard is open. What is Samsung thinking with that eyesore?

I'm actually having issues receiving MMS messages. Some playstore comments from note 8 users are saying the same thing. Sent something to the developers today. Figure they'll be seeing it on Monday.

Thanks for replying, duders. If you haven't already, email the devs and let them know.

Have you rebooted your phone recently? I hadn't since I got it last week. Was going back and forth with Textra support (in a positive way) and then I thought to rebooted...and textra worked fine. I felt stupid for not thinking about doing that. Might help, won't hurt.

Yeah, I've rebooted a few times. It's an issue with the soft navigation a buttons covering the attachment bar. App dev things. [emoji17]

Does textra work with advanced messaging yet?
I was trying to get some screenshots of the issue and how the bar shows only in landscape mode. Apparently Bixby commands force portrait mode and get hidden by the emoji list. Likewise, I tried with the SPen but the air command menu also gets covered and I'm unable to interact with it.

I dont believe so.
We are also having issues with sending a Live Message (MMS) from textra. My wife and I are both, begrudgingly, using the stock messaging app until Textra gets this fixed.
T-Mobile is good tho...

I chatted with a textra rep and she stated rcs does not work on T-Mobile .
However i am able to send live messages direct from textra to another phone i have. That phone is also on T-Mobile so it seems T-Mobile have no issues with sending /receiving gifs/live messeages...

Same here I just tried googling some help and found your post. Textra doesn't play nice with N8
Not everyone is having the issue.
Maybe specific to beta testers on beta firmware or/and carrier specific nonsense.
T-Mobile user here and textra is working fine in seeing the tool bar and sending in/receiving gifs and such.and im not the only one that is having success, so its not totally fair to say this app is failing everyone.
There is a workaround from Textra.
Settings > Display > Navigation Bar > click the text under Show and Hide Button > turn off Textra
They are working on a fix.

Is edge lighting working for anyone? I've turned it on, ensured transparency is low, thickest border, set to always. Nothing. With or without Aod, which I use, but still want edge lighting until we get the camera cutout led.

I can't get edge lighting to work at all, it only works for Samsung Messaging. Other apps for it to work, the screen has to be on so it's useless. This was the worst decision ever to get rid of the LED light.

Edge lighting + still only works on stock messaging app for me (using pulse). I've set the notification reminder to 3 min for calls and messages and that along with always on display is working pretty good in terms of not missing texts. Still looking forward to front cam ring led light though. They better not be teasing with that update lol.

You need to go to "manage notifications" in the edge lighting settings. You can turn on or off any app you want.
Is that in theory or does it actually work for you? I haven't heard of it working for anybody (for most apps) since 9
NOT working on S10. Had Samsung rep at Best Buy mess with it. He fixed it while I was in the store, but after I left and customized the color, NOT working again!! So annoying!!
He told me he cleared cache and force closed edge lighting app, but I can't find it!!
HELP!!
On my S10e it only works with Hangouts when the screen is turned on, which is pretty much useless. GMail, WhatsApp & Telegram not working at all.
Downloaded and trying it out.
Can confirm as well that it isn't working on S10+
