Now that I bit the bullet and newsflash'ed to Pie, I can answer my own question. It's the new interface, but quality is just as mediocre, clearly worse than the xz2c. No improvement in quality.

Perhaps, but I do not really care very much about that. That's a very limited improvement in a rather gimmicky scenario.
I was referring to photo quality generally, which remains clearly inferior to the XZ2c (which is my standard of what I would settle for). Noise reduction is poor, with smudged details, and exposure is lacking in many cases.
Otherwise, the cam app interface is an improvement too over the previous version.
Camera performance on the XZ1c sucks. No change with PIE. I had better pics with my z5c.

The lens and the software have very little to do with the quality of the pictures you take. Just because you pay top dollar for your camera/phone camera, doesn't mean you will take good pictures.
I bet you still have it set to 'auto'

Is this a joke?
Why do people buy expensive lens for DSLRs instead of sticking with the default cheap lens then?
Of course it's not just the lens, but what you wrote makes no sense.
Either way, XZ1 (Compact) has absolutely pathetic and ****ty camera and I regret every second of my decision when I was looking for a new phone and bought this piece of crap. My next phone will definitely NOT be anything made by Sony - if only because of the camera.

The Nokia makes very good pictures with gcam app.

Hello dear xda users,
as we know, our xperia Z doesn´t have the best camera. I have it for several months. In my case, it makes worse pictures then mid-range devices I used before it, especially in the indoor daylight conditions. I noticed there are some tips to make it better in manual mode, but still it isn´t a win.
So what do you think, could it be reclaimable? Do you have some experience with it?
Thanks for your opinions.

Some softwares can help you produce better results. However they would not by nay means increase your camera pixels or anything but only help you focus better with better exposure and produce better colours
Like for example if you snap documents from your phone camera, camscanner can do wonders.
There are other applications for taking pictures as well on playstore.
Quote me if you have any other question

I tried some other camera apps but photos still have ISO set too high what makes big noise at them.
I found some cyber-shot app/xposed module. Does it worth for try, could it make better photos?

If you think your camera is faulty, only then Sony can help you with your warranty. However you can visit a Sony care and discuss your problem with them. They might be able to help.

All phones are digital zoom to my knowledge. This is the worst camera for zoom I've ever had on a phone.
not sure why people are complaining on smartphone cameras expecting to provide SLR like features.

The iPhone with 2 cameras have optical zoom. So not all phones. Probably some huawei phones as well.
If you want clear zoom (for visually impaired) get a zoom lens that clips on.
As for fuzziness (this note is for OP) try fussing with the app. HQ mode etc.. Also is it low light or bright light?
get the google camera 4.2 apk very nice shoots
Hey guys, I am curious, how is the photo quality on Pie?
Of course compared to Note 9 Oreo.

What I want to know is, if anyone who had the "zoom in and camera starts vibrating and won't focus" bug, does Pie fix this?

Shutter speed seems about average. I had the S10e. I don't notice a huge difference either way, but I'm still playing around with it.. I do wish indoor pics held up better, but that is common with any phone other than the pixel
I kinda wish OnePlus put the money into only one lens instead of three. Have a great single lens, larger sensor and keep it simple and work on the photo processing.

Been struggling with with whether to get this or the p30 pro. Might have to go with the p30 pro
I'll post comparison pics to gcam a little later. I think it's just as good as the S10e, though. In good lighting it can compete with any of them, although it has a tendency to blow out the highlights some. Low light is where the others take a bit of an advantage.

I am mainly interested in battery life and camera performance. And camera performance so far looks hit and miss. I have owned almost every OP device. And I don't know I am just not feeling all that excited about this one. To get the battery life is want I will have to dial back all the settings that make this phone stand out. To get great camera performance I am going to have to pray the gcam mod comes out and it's as good as it was on the 6T

There are not many alternatives atm. The S10+ has Knox and a fuse which disables many important features once you unlock it, also you can't undo it.
Huawei has stopped giving codes to unlock the bootloader.
Pixel 3 XL has good camera software, but a small battery, a very ugly notch (personal preference though), old Snapdragon 845 etc.
Am I missing something? A good camera phone which you can unlock easily and which has a decent community?

Hi, bought the phone 2 days ago, because it's not with 888, it's not with curved display and has a ultra wide camera with AF and macro capabilities with raw support.
To my surprise, the quality of the raw file from the ultra wide is worse than from the periscope - there are some strange bright dots when you zoom in to 100%, which lead to overall bad quality of the ready image. I guess they are the phase focus pixels, but they shouldn't be visible without any heavy editing.
So, is it just me, or the problem is global, so I know how to proceed with this? I'm leaving a crop depicting the problem.
Are you sure the ultra wide angle has AF? but yeah it looks weird...

The battle is legendary. Still no success defeating the defect. If it is a demozaicing problem, Motorola should fix it.

THanks for the reply. I wonder how happy you are overall with the cameras? I've found that the front facing one is quite dark and has WB issues. In general the photos coming out of the stock camera seem riddled with artifacts and oversharpened.

Camera Is great as I see in reviews from owners and websites .
I don't even bother shooting in jpg, this is Motorola and they suck in camera performance and resolution logic.
But, I shoot raw, which is possible even with the selfie cam, and after a minute of editing I get sharp and impressive images, and that's why I bought it - the sensors itself are quite capable. If I find a solution to the problem with the ultrawide, the phone is a keeper...
