Is this possible with the X⁴?
Nope.
I use link2sd but it requires root. You can get it here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.buak.Link2SD

I'm new relatively new, been installing ROMs, recoveries, and kernels only since the first cm6. I keep seeing people say how much they can't wait for apps2sd (I'm assuming they're referring to something different than what FroYo offers natively). In the same breadth I keep seeing SD card partitioning and ext2/3/4 or whatever. I'm guessing these topics are all related.
I suppose one of my questions is, other than saving a little space by putting some apps on the SD card, is there some other reason people are so anxious for this feature? And what is the purpose of SD card partitioning? I understand partitioning and its usefulness with PCs but I simply don't know enough about Android.
I'm hoping the answer to all this is similar to the PC side. It would be great to move all apps to a special partition and be able to flash Tom's in and out or restore nandroids and keep all your apps just how they were.
Froyo apps2sd uses the fat32 format of the SD card, which is handy because no partition is required, The limits are that you can not put root apps on it, because fat32 does not recognise root, unlike EXT format that linux supports.
The old apps2sd method used ext2/3/4. It had the advantage of allowing root apps, but the disadvantage was you had to create a partition on your card, which is not super convenient, and you had to have some idea of how big you wanted it to be, plus i believe ext3 and 4 have journaling, which can shorten the life of your SD card.

I would also like to add that you cant use widget apps if you moved them to sd with the froyo method.
So as long as the apps I want to move do not require root access I'd be better off using froyo method? Do Widgets work using froyo method?

Hi guys,
I don't manage to understand what is the deal with types of app2sd.
On my MS i have froyomod installed and i can push "move to sd" in the app manager without creating a ext2 on my sd card.
1st question: where did the applications are being move to when i don't have a ext2 partition?
2nd question: what is the difference between having an ext2 partition or not having it?
Any one????

The native app2sd sends your applications to a DRMed container on the SD card. You do not need any special partition. App authors need to authorize this (to my knowledge) and does not always work super well.
The older style app2ext hack tricks the os into thinking that apps are installed into the phone nand when in fact this is just a link to the ext2/4 partition on the sdcard. This is apparently more reliable and works with every app.
I used both and dont both with apps2ext anymore since froyo. But i use a very small number of apps...i can imagine that for a fully loaded phone this can be very different.
Also, there was a lot of talk recently about RAM, lag, performance, etc when using each version in the CM7 thread. I didn't really pay attention, but it may interest you (last 2 or 3 days).

There are to method to move app to SDcard:
1. app2sd, this is native feature, all 2.2 rom support this method, but not all parts off a app move to sd, there is few thing still store in internal memory, with this method, all the data that can move to sd will store in .android_secure folder.
2. app2ext method. This method you need to create a ext2 partition on your sdcard, add some modules to support move app to ext2, and all app will store in "fake internal" memory!
Thanks a lot for answering my question!

Hello.
I have Galaxy S +..
All my games +data install on internal SD,who can i install on External SD..
I'm new...I have buy yesterday this phone so isn't rooted..
I can do this without root?
If i can't ,teach me who to root and who can i install on external sd.
of corse its possible
there are several ways u can do this
i symlink my folders from the external to the internal card
an easy way is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1502893
if u want it easier u can use for ex. gl2sd or something like link2sd
just google for this apps
but u should use a custom rom for this
hopes this helps
have fun

App2SD can do that but it is not always possible or recommendable.
For data files i think and depends on the app (i.e. i can set Open Street Map to store all downloaded maps on external sd card)
Best apps to use are link 2sd and folder mount these both need root.
Because of the way the internal memory is mounted as SD card no app2sd will work as they see internal as sdcard.
Link 2sd you set a partition by connecting card to PC without phone use any free windows partition tool set size and make sure it is set as primary, use fat32
Then when you restart phone with ext sdcard inserted link 2sd will ask that a new partition has been detected and how to mount select fat32 then from in app select which files are in the internal memory and select to make link. they are then moved to ext sdcard and free up space.
When you download games they are harder to move data as they look to particular folder only. Folder mount links these files so you can move to ext card and games still works.
Both are free on the play store.

so i need to download link2sd and folder mount? is there any workaround without using these two apps?
Don't know but you won't get any apps to ext sdcard or data without using these or similar.
They load at boot and are active, just click app, game and it will run smoothly.

I guess no... you can't do without root bro..
Wait till root is available for your c5303:highfive: & Then you can move it.
Or you can flash 284 firmware & root it, if you need it urgent.
tanx,im waiting for v16 to root my devise, but can i root then move the app then unroot my devise?cuz i root my galexy note 2 and my battery was drain too fast

Not really as the apps need root to work and every time you boot up you will lose function of apps if you unroot.

Rooting doesn't cause battery drain.

I use FolderMount. It works for me and it is easy to setup.
