Cell signal problems - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I brought my Note 9 from eBay two weeks ago I had problems with the battery it would drain 5% overnight fully charged. I thought it would settle after a few days the problem persisted found out it was the cell standby. I only get one bar or just nothing at all. I traded sims with my brother who was AT&T he has a S9 plus he gets two bars with Mint Mobile without dropping while I get just one bar or nothing at all with AT&T. Is there a way to fix it or do I get a replacement or my money back?

Battery drain can be a number of things. Weak signal can drain battery, but so can an app running in the background. I also couldn't tell you if 5% overnight is really bad. I charge mine overnight, so I don't know what the standby time is like.
I don't see much issue if he's only getting 2 bars and you're only getting one. Plus you're comparimg Mint mobile TO ATT. That's apples and oranges. But bars don't mean anything. You can't tell what kind of signal you have with bars. You have to check the actual signal strength in dBms in the status menu. Also run a speed test to see how fast your data is, which can be an indication of signal strength.
As far as getting it fixed or replaced, you could talk to Samsung and see what they say. But what is your signal strength when you leave your house? You could just live in a dead spot. My last house was a dead spot for all three major carriers. Walk 50 feet up my street though, and you had full signal.

Losing 5% overnight isn't terrible... Low signal sounds more like a carrier or locarion issue too.

What model did you buy as in model number? Losing 5% overnight ain't terrible actually as been mentioned.
To gauge a true signal strength don't use the bars on the status bar . Download an app called LTE discovery and check and compare the dbm figures

I have found it depends on the signal strength. At home and work I consistantly get 4 bars and 3G signal all the time and I can go 2 days on a single charge.
When we went on vacation recently, I was only getting 2 bars but a 3G signal and a single charge didn't even last me 10 hours.
"hows the battery on this phone?" Well - it's black!
It's a very strange question...
"hows the battery on this phone?" compared to what?
To a neuclear power plant it's rubbish. Compared to my wife's Desire it's fantastic.
It all depends on several parmameters and setting. Opdate stuff all the time like mail, Facebook, Twitter, takes a lot of power. Screen brightnes also.
My battery last about 3 days.
But still a very strang question...
It's OK. Comparing to Desire, it's better. And it depends on the strengh of signal.
its much better than the desire in battery but not better in Signals...

XT860: High Battery usage "Cell standby" culprit

Has anyone with the XT860 on Rogers noticed a high Cell Standby? With 2G enabled on my phone the problem persists, same with 3G.
I can barely get 12 hours from my battery and I have the extended battery directly from the Verizon store.
Any thoughts?

Yup, same here...
Do you have any applications running? Trillian was killing my battery before (I think) and stopped using it, although my battery isn't all tha much better. I think we need an update...
I'm also on rogers though, is any XT860 users on Bell also noticing the same thing? Btw I uninstalled JuiceDefender as it was slowing my phone down a lot.

I use Trillian, but I also used Trillian on my old phone (HTC Desire Z) and received a magnitude better battery life (one and a half days.) Even with Trillian not enabled on my device, I am seeing the same drain occurring.

That's absolutely disgustingly terrible :| .. and to think I bought this phone for better battery life.
It has to have something to do with Bell Mobility. Mine has no battery problem; lasts up to 30-37 hours on one full charge. It never connects to Bell's networks (only AT&T), so I'm thinking, what if there is some Bell bloatware or low-level network reporting/feedback software that is constantly communicating to some server on Bell's networks, and since my phone has no access to Bell's networks then the software is prevented from working its evil battery-draining magic..?
I don't know. Just a suggestion; why would the exact same phone model not eat battery on AT&T's networks when it does on Bell's?

"Mototola" and "better battery life" in the same sentence ?
I'm on the Telus network with my 860. Presently I'm at 14hours with 40% battery left, with moderate to heavy usage. Seems pretty normal to me, like my original Milestone.

Motorola phones are too dependent on the network.
When I got my milestone, with the first firmware, I barely reached the 2pm, with the vodafone sim, with the same FW it lasted almost a whole day with a three.it SIM.
Looks like the situation is almost unchanged
I read in other threads that the Verizon Droid 3 had the same problem when it was released, but after the update, this problem was fixed. I'm on TELUS with my XT860.
I unplug it at 7h30 in the morning and plug it at 23h00 at night with 30% left.
Also, I read the whole CM7 ROM thread and talk about how Motorola seems to have purposefully decided to attenuate cell phone reception (in system files, fixable) to make it seem like the US Droid 3 has a better radio reception.... that last part could be speculation about how Motorola decided to program the device, but this reminds me of how Apple "fixed" the iPhone 4 deathgrip issue by only reprogramming how the device displays and understands the radio signal strenght level.
I'm using an XT860 on AT&T's network. Only had it for a few days but the battery life isn't too terrible - about on par with my Desire Z.
Right now I have been unplugged for 17 hours and am down to 17% battery life remaining. While its nothing to shout about its not too terrible either, considering it is still completely stock. Here's my usage for the day (pretty typical day for me):
Gmail and Work Email 'Pushing' to device constantly
Send/Receive approx 150 texts
Playing Wordfeud throughout the day - +/- 30 moves
30 minutes of calling - all using bluetooth connection to headset
Wifi on when at home - approx 7 hours
Display brightness at 50%
About 30 minutes of web browsing and digging around in market
According to the battery stats, cell standby is still the biggest culprit at 36% followed by phone idle at 33% and wifi at 16%. Everything else is below 10% (although not sure how much I trust the accuracy of these numbers)
We will see how it does over the next week or so. I still may decide to go with the larger 1930 mah battery for days where I use the phone more heavily but as long as I can make it from the time I rise from bed to the time I go to sleep on one charge, I'm happy.
Wow that is good battery life. My battery seems weaker.

This is a known issue. The Droid 3 had the same problem until the 5.6.980 update was released. I read in a thread somewhere an experiment someone had done. Short story is he found the phone acted like it was constantly searching for signal, despite having strong signal. I emailed Motorola asking if and when we could see an update to fix this and some other known issues on the xt860 and they were pretty useless. I think every xt860 owner should email them, maybe we can get some support here.
My battery lasts maybe 10 hours if I'm lucky, less if I actually use it. I have to plug it in every chance I get. There are so many things I love about this phone, but battery life and lack of ROM dev are 2 things I hate. I'm thinking about getting a D3 and unlocking it.

Is it the 50% w/o signal bug? Does airplane mode every boot fix it? I had that problem witness my Droid Eris and that fixed it.

I had to Google that. No I don't believe so. Keeping in mind this is not info I've gotten from moto/bell/Verizon but rather because I spend too much time reading these forums. The speculation was that the radio searches for a signal, like it was in a low/no signal area, even if it had full strength. To elaborate on my previous post, someone who owned an OG droid and a D3 brought them around with him all day, in his office he never had any cell reception and at home he had great reception. At the office both phones lost battery at about the same rate and had similar battery usage stats, as they both spent all their time searching for signal. At home the droid3 continued to lose battery at the same rate, like it was still searching for signal, even though it had full, while the OG battery loss slowed way down.
I'd find the thread except it was awhile ago and I'm way too lazy to look for it. I also know that when Verizon released the 5.6.890 update, this issue seemed to be fixed.
Also I sometimes have to toggle airplane mode as my data seems to stop working and it never fixes this problem. I think these are 2 very separate bugs

I can report same here. Mine is primarily on Rogers, but does same on Telus too.
Another bug I noticed is car dock triggers very high battery drain. Just insert and remove the phone from the car dock and battery starts draining about 3-4 times faster, device gets warm too. Nothing fixes it but reboot. I had 2 XT860 (first one got replaced due to faulty memory) both show same issues. Media dock also has a bug - disables the auto backlight, but at least has no battery drain issue. Not to mention the crappy smurf camera...
Motorola, where is our "890" update???

Has anyone else looked at the logs for the radio on the XT860 with the Bell firmware? It's absolutely being spammed!
If you have the Android SDK installed, you can see the radio messages by executing the following command:
Code:
adb logcat -b radio
I suspect this part of the issue, and would like to see what the results are like on the XT862 (from Verizon.)

Signal strength

I am skeptical of the signal strength of this phone for a few reasons.
1. Battery life is around 12 hours at best with 2+ SOT
2. Signal is almost 90% yellow in the battery graph.
3. Slightly different, but my Wi-Fi signal seems weak. I cannot pickup a strong Wi-Fi signal when I am about 30 feet from the router with 1 wall.
What speeds should I see with xlte on Verizon?
Mine stays in the yellow as well but I get around 16 hours with 4-5 hours screen on time. Here's my phone and my wife's iPhone 5s side by side in my living room. This phone seems to get better signal than any I have used.
Im actually having this same problem on my gs4. Router signal awful and, battery life is horrible... Moto x comes in tomorrow though! Hope i dont, have this issue agaib... On verizon as well
I doubt this phone is even capable of xlte, but I'll do a speed test in better conditions. I've seen signal top out at 91 and dip back to 57. Mind you -57 dbm is perfect signal. I actually left the gs4 because of the signal issues it had, that's how I got this 10 months in my contract. I haven't had any Wi-Fi issues at all. Except that the cellular radios are integrated,I think the internals are top notch.

I need help. My lg g4 battery life is horrible.

I get on average 2hrs of SOT but when I went to YouTube I saw that most people were able to get 4hrs on heavy usage and some even 8 hrs.
I get maybe an hour and a half at most. I use allot but my g3 would get at least 3 or 4 hours before i had to charge it.the g4 Battery life just sucks all together i guess

I call bull $!## im in your boat im lucky 2 get 2 hours. I have all battery saving methods in play. Ive remove bloat. Carrier iq. No auto brite and turned down. All i do is web surf most of the time. I even went as far as underclocking big and little cores i got almost 3 one day. But normally 1.5 2 hours so . No rogue apps. No sync. gps. Even deleted most of te system partition. I got sys partition down to 2.3 gb of used space
Don't worry guys, I usually get around an hour and a half before I need to recharge mine. It's terrible
Can you guys elaborate on what is consuming the battery? Is your phone getting really hot and staying hot the entire time?
I just wonder if there is some rogue app that is using the cell phone radio unnecessarily, which will drain the battery really fast *especially* if you are not nearby a cell tower.
Can you go into the settings, under "Battery & power saving," then "Battery usage," then scroll down to see the "BATTERY USE DETAILS." What does that look like? Is your top-listed thing "Android OS" or "Screen" or something else?
Type this in the YouTube search box" screen on time 8 hours lg g4 vs lg g3" watch this video the guy gets 8hrs of SOT on his G4

In batt stats mines goes screen usaully about 60% or so then android os at about 25 or 30. Then usually chrome comes in third. Where im at i got horrible cell reception here in the mountains. Im sitting on 2 bars -95dbm -8asu. Horible signal. Im using mine gsm though also. Imo this is one of the worst reception phones ive ever seen. Im lucmy to get up 3 bars. I dont know in my case ive.been throught safe mode. Stayed in it for 2 days of coarse i got close to 2.5 to 3 hours. But no apps at all
Ive got thermal paste and pads all over in mine. So naturally from the heat disapation mine always feels warm due to the frame absorbing the heat

Oh, I see the qcamera daemon thing listed there in your battery usage stats, and that is a known bug/error that drains the battery. If you eliminate the qcamera daemon bug, you will get much better battery life. Try quick search for qcamera daemon, I think it goes back to nexus devices, but there are several threads that specifically address fixing this battery killing bug in LG G4.

Thats actually the firat time ive seen that i was using the camera rite before i made the post but only for a couple minutes but still thanks ill check into it
Like today what u see is it and im only at 1 hour sot
Just looked im at 1 hour 42 min sot. Now only thing diffrent over last 2 days is my data has been on for last 2 days trying to burn it up before my time runs out tonight. Ive also noticed ive been on 4g most of it and my signal has been a lot better with my data turned on. I think i have a issue with my radio hanging on 2g or 3g and not handing back over. If im on 2g. It seems like it stayz there. Even if 3g or 4g is detected. Vice versa for other speeds and connections. Like if im on 3g. Some reason i have to toggle data e or 4 times to get it to switch to 4g. But also like i said im running a sprint phone gsm unlocked to so i figgurez it got somethin to do with that. Sometimes i wont get calls even if i got 2 or 3 barz. But text come straight through. Other party calling me says itll ring 20 times neay before voicemail kicks in.
My usual SOT.

Note 9 battery issue

My note 9 is a week old, but I'm no where the statics says about the battery life, I have iPhone 6 and it hold the battery better than my note 9, my usage is really under average I wake up 7 am with 100% I reach home back from office with 13~10% left , and I really don't use the phone at all, you can say that I use it approximately for 30 min through my whole day my iPhone 6 is at 71% with same usage and my iphone was charged two days ago I have no clue what's up with my phone, I disabled sync, navigation bar, nfc but no luck .

Just FYI, signal strength is probably one of the biggest influences on battery life. If you're in a concrete building where the signal is very weak, the phone could be constantly polling for a stronger/closer tower. Using WiFi at work, if available, will help mitigate that.

That is high, i had same issues.. i was losing around 40% over 12 hour period! 4g on Sync On that's it everything else off..
My NOTE 9 was only few weeks old come to week 4 i had a replaced.. Before having it replaced week 4 battery got much better i was losing around 4-5% over a 12 hour period.
i still got it replaced, one thing I’ve noticed it seems like Note 9 is learning your usage pattern.. Your battery will settle down, you just have to give it time.. Samsung usually offer 30 day replacement! so wait till you get into your mid 20s days if the battery isn’t normal get it replaced!

yes, install the app called better battery stats and let it run for a day, and see which app(s) or process is consuming battery.
Just an observation in regards to deep sleep and signal strength. I've noticed if I place my note 9 in an area where I have the best signal before I got to bed , then less wake locks appear to occur. I've tried this theory a few times.

The absolute max should be 7% for 7 hours (1% per hour drain) and most of the time it should be around 3-4% for 7h. Most likely you have a rogue app on your phone that is causing the issue or you used package disabler to disable some packages in the operating system.
